UMike...there are TWO reason players go to JUCO:

1. Not enough talent (rare).

2. Not good enough grades or test scores (common).

KState has cleaned up with JUCO players and if I recall correctly cleaned our clock with them. I say: Let's go get 'em!

UMike...there are TWO reason players go to JUCO:

I would add that there's a third, and very important reason for a limited number of players. Those with d1 talent, already accepted or already in a major program, that have run into academic or legal/behavioral problems. An example would be Cam Newton.

j.w.

Good stuff as always, all. This is the most entertaining Canes team we've had in years, hard to find anything worthy of bitching about once you accept the fact that the D is young and just learning, and our TE and backup LB are what they are.

We have a QB folks, He has the Hurricane mentality (he's a little crazy)

Look at this pic...look in his eyes...he's nuts. I love it and we need it.

Kyle Wright was lying... Kirby Freeman was lying...Jacory and Marve were lying. Not dissing them or discounting their efforts, but what they lied about was their true belief that they were good enough, confident--had "swagger", and were going to leave it all on the field in classic Cane fashion.

I'm not saying this kid is the best ever, most competent, most athletic, or has the best skills. What I am saying is that this kid has the old school Cane craziness that we haven't seen in a decade.

He believes and he has NO FEAR!

This game will prove his mettle and guess what? He is conscious of this fact himself. This kid has watched Jacory crumble on the road (at night) in Blacksburg, in Columbus, Tampa? (South Florida), and in the Sun Bowl against these Irish. Nerves folks--pressure folks--Canes rise to these type of challenges.

Those other QBs were scared to fail--Morris is not scared.

I just fear that he is too pumped and turns into Barry Bonds (able to hit singles but only swinging for the fence. Morris clearly fell in love with the home run last and he needs to remember the underneath route and that he can run when no one is open.

Don't try to win a certain way or with a particular stat.

As you can read, I'm feeling this kid...so I'll be in Chicago now. I'm there.

Yes, Dorsett (7, 191, 2 TD) was beat out by BC WR Alex Amidon (8, 193, 2 TD). I agree, 1 more Rec and 2 Yards, there should be a tie...

CaneRock

If we go the JUCO route, we better HIT, more than we MISS. Because if you miss on a JUCO kid, you only have 1 or 2 years to FIX that miss, whereas if you miss on a kid coming out of HS, you have 4 to 5 years to fix that miss.

Correction: Morris didn't fall in love with the home run, he feel in love with passing the ball downfield period (into coverage and when he had room to run).

Stephen Morris*/QB/Miami-FL: Morris turned in a career performance during the Hurricanes' last-second victory over North Carolina State. His record-setting numbers included 566 passing yards and 5 TDs. While many will focus only on the numbers, Morris looked good in all aspects of the game. The junior showed great patience, awareness and made terrific decisions in the pocket. He connected on five passes of 40 yards or more, including the game-winner of 62 yards. Morris is slowly developing into the complete package, melding his incredible physical skills into consistent, smart play at quarterback.Read more: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/writers/tony_pauline/09/29/week-five-risers-sliders-sheldon-richardson/index.html#ixzz2831AXwEC

This can't be true, Morris had a average game

WWIN

I've been waiting on this week for two years to bring this up.

Who remembers what Morris17 said to the notre lame players after they beat us in the bowl game?????????????

UpNorthCane27

Whats going on my people?

Lets set it straight once and for all...

Stephen Morris, had an incredible game and the stats prove it, he delivered when needed BUT!!! there are alot of things he needs to keep working on because he makes some really dumb ass throws and decisions. For example he audibled a qb draw which worked and went for alot of yards but he then did it again and didn't gain sh**, Jedd then questioned him and you can read his lips saying why'd you make that call. So all in all stephen gets a B on his report card so far.

Walford... His ass needs to get up higher he's a basketball player for crying out loud, yea the pass was overthrown but he only jumped literally 3 inches off the ground it was a pathetic effort on his behalf

Telemaque SMDh at him man even though he caused that fumble he is a lost cause.

Dorsett, Scott, Johnson, Waters- showed big play potential over n over.

James and Duke- keep doing what your doing because it's working.

Oline- Beasts!!! Kehoe got them boys playing

OOOOO and Jed please don't be complacent dont run a draw play on 2 and 10 man. If your up on a team keep shoving it down their throats!!!!!!!

In who's eyes?

Sure, there were some throws we (and he) would want back, but AVERAGE?

Willie, he broke the ACC AND Miami passing records...

UMike

I only had 2 issues with Morris from the NC State game. First, it seems to me he got to confident after the big first quarter. He had ope guys underneath on a few occasions but instead forced it deep into coverage, a couple of which stalled a drive or lead to a 3 and out. If he dumps those passes we keep diving. Second, and it may have to do with the first, he left yards out there when he easily could of ran for a chunk. Seemed he wanted those passing yards or deep plays, even when they weren't there. I personally read Fisch's lips after one play and he asked him why he didnt just take it. That being said, Fish will get it fixed and Morris will continue to blossom into the premiere QB in the ACC..imo

UMike

Ohio..the only way I can read comments during the game is if we are winning and its not close lol

Tsully76

Hope our Canes win Saturday against ND, more importantly I hope our Canes win the following Saturday against UNC on October 13, Canespacers this is the one game I have to miss. I know my fellow Canespacers will represent maybe our attendance will be over 40,000 at Sun Life on the 13th. Go Canes beat the stinking Irish.

j.w.

UMike- agree with a lot of what you're saying re: Morris. His first quarter was as good a quarter as you'll ever see in college football. Second and third, as I said on Sat., he looked like Covington out there. Too stiff, too wild. And he got no help from his TE, or the run game. Then, he turned it up again in the 4th Q. The kid has talent and he can make up for a lot of his mistakes with his arm, heart, and confidence. We see improvement with him every game, and his demeanor is exactly what a young team needs.

UMike

Tsully..I love your enthusiasm in regards to our attendance lol...j.w....I agree..I just saw multiple times where a te was open on a crossing route etc, but he went deep into coverage. I think he got a little too cocky for a few minutes. I do like that we finally have LEGIT weapons all over the field, even the TE's if they just catch the ball lol

herbieibis

Been down at the poor mans South Beach, (North Myrtle Beach) interviewing for a job and those zeros didn't have the game available but by the score, I guess it was whoever had the ball last was going to win. Great it was us.
I see the defense is still leaky as ever but we did have 6 takeaways, that probably saved the day and Jake was keeping the bookies in mind, missing three FG's, Al which brings us to the team I hate the most in College football The whining Irish. Here is team ready made for us to gut. Average offense, with a rookie QB but sadly we have a way of making a average QB look like an all_american. Defensively ND hasn't faced an offense like ours, Ok Michigan has some tools but Robinson is a horrible passer. Since our Defense can't seem to stop a cold, this may be ND's chance to get well offensively, I hate to think. They will most assuredly try to run it down our throats, which is what I would do too. We haven't shown any ability to stop the run consistently or the pass for that matter either but we have found a way to win, which is what I see us doing only if the following happen:
1.We have to have at least 125 yds or more on the ground.
2.We have to stop the run inbetween the tackles.
3.Morris has to be as good as he has been, recently.
4.Win the t.o. war.
5.Don't get cold feet. Keep the offense wide open.
6.Can "U" believe 27-24.

Tsully76

Phil Steele updated his rankings. He's now got us finishing 4th in the ACC and playing UCLA in... THE SUN BOWL.

UMike

How in the world would we finish 4th in the ACC lol...FSU is the obvious #1 at the moment, but GT is going down the drain, VT lost to a nobody..that leaves who..Maybe Clemson? Oh well..dont matter, week by week is all that matters

He also has been in the loop with our new NCST Alumni connections. We welcomed them at Sun Life and they were VERY greatful that Miami had some classy fans who had their back if needed.

"Thank you for he hospitality and for sharing your pictures and blog. Outside of the game's out come, we couldn't have asked for a nicer day. We will look forward to hosting Canespace in Raleigh!

Best of luck to you and to the U during the remainder of the season (especially against our newest ACC inductee minus football, Notre Dame). We'll need a lot of the same this Saturday night when we host FSU!

Until next time on the gridiron, we'll look forward to meeting the Canes during basketball season."

The Dude

Kudos to all the Miami WRs. They are playing like Hurricanes. Dorsett obviously has been great. Rashawn Scott has had a little case of the dropsies but had a fantastic game last week. Davon Johnson is having a strong senior season. Allen Hurns has been great even with concussion issues and hats off to Malcolm Lewis too, who was really coming on strong before his injury.

That's a good question, CoCane. What's up with Porter?

herbieibis

What's going on with Porter? The Greene Kid from FSU had an appendectomy 2 weeks before Porter did and has been playing. I guess he'll wait until the last 2 games of the year, like last year to play.
Speaking of Jucco's it's the luck of the draw when you get um!I'd rather get one that at least had 3 years of eligibility left. I also know for a fact, that Golden had better be hitten up every top flight DT, there is available, to plug up that dam pin-cushion defensive front we have. I have never seen a group so inept at rushing the passer and all the while our secondary looks like a bunch of Pop Tarts, fresh from the toaster!
How many ships we have now? 17 or 18?
Jermaine Johnson, is another of Shannon's boys. Played as a freshman but hasn't seen to much P.T. since Al got here. Hate to lose depth, but if you ain't willing to work adi dam os!!

Lou of M

Ok, I dont know who did this math at UM but 22hrs and 55 mins is greater than 1hr44mins. Neutral home field my a$$. Might as well played it in south bend. I cant wait till we beat these chumps. []_[]

You could tell just by his Twitter account he wasnt going to see the field..I believe I mentioned this a long time ago lol..

Willie...if you watch the game you will see what im talking about. Im not saying say a TON of it obviously lol..but with the view you see and as they expand for the throw you can see TE's underneath etc..thats what I mean. I know other people commented on at least one of those plays when a TE was WIDEEE open for the first down and you could see it clear as day on tv..but he instead forced it deep. Like I said..not a ton, but a few times.

CGNC

Herbie - good luck with the job

86Cane

UMike...U are correct, ask OGV. We were at the game and we could see ALL of the WR and TEs on each play from the upper deck (Section 444, last row in the shade).

I called one play "TE down the middle". The guy was WIDE open no safety in sight but Morris never saw him. NCST became focused on the outisde and deep and the crossing patterns were open a lot.

CaneRock

That's because Greene's appendix didn't burst, which might be the case with Porter. The appendix ain't nothin' to fool with, those things can be life threatening...

solarcane

I'm almost certain Stephen Morris can out quarterback anyone on this blog.

The guy breaks a very coveted ACC record and guys that can't hit their kid 20 yds down the middle of the street with no one in their face are taking time to explain what Morris needs to do to be a better qb.
Philip Rivers, Boomer Esiason, Matt Ryan, Russell Wilson, Norm Snead, Roman Gabriel, never threw it in an ACC game like Stephen did Saturday

UMike

86..I couldn't see as much as you guys, but I saw a few times a TE or RB open..and I remember it clearly because Morris went deep instead, and that is what sticks...I just THINK he was so confident after that first quarter, he got a little greedy. I know for sure on one 3rd down play the TE came across the middle WIDE open, would of easily had the first, but Morris went deep and it was a 3 and our.

solarcane

umike,
The kid is getting better every time he steps on the field.
He understands he has to produce points pronto and he is doing it.
If not for Morris D'no must go banners would already be flying over the stadium.
Not to mention the pressure he has to bear being the starting quarterback at Miami

Felipe.

The fact that Morris can get even better should be a good thing, not something to defend against as if you're his body guard. It's not very becoming and derails the blog into a big meta-fight like you did during and after the game. Should have better things to do.

Be back Saturday.

UMike

solar..I agree...whats scary is he is only going to get better, especially under Fisch

CoCane

Morris is DEVELOPING into the best pro QB prospect at the U since Testaverde. Ijs. Sit back & enjoy the ride.

I bet the people that were nit picking & down playing his performance during & after the game, were the same ones calling for Ryan Williams against KSU & Bethune. Smh. Even after witnessing Williams babbageness at the spring game. Even after Morris put his azz on da bench within the 1st scrimmage of fall camp. Even though an NFL scout basically said Williams aint even in the same solar system with Morris' skillz. Lol!

(In my Cris Carter voice) C'MON MAAAAAAN!!!

herbieibis

I for one after the first couple weeks said Morris was just average and at that stage he was but I think with Jedd opening up the play book and throwing caution to the wind, this kid in fact can play. Having a QB coach will pay dividens. Just think, if we didn't already have about 25 drops, what his completion percentage would be? We haven't even scratched the surface, with our brick hands TE"s yet. Once we incorperate them fully into the offense, it'll be just like the old days!

Now, now...I know from your comments alone that U are bigger and better than that. Don't take your ball and go home.

I got this!

86Cane

UMike...here is what's SCARY:

Wait until NEXT year for Morris.

THAT'S SCARY!!!

orange 'n green in the vein

The thing to keep in mind about Morris, he's just now getting to a full 12 career starts or a season of experience to draw on, so now is when he'll start to make that exponential leap in terms of getting rid of those risky reads into triple coverage or the ones where he throws right to the LB's hands playing zone against the slant route or where he checks into the right plays instead of one that worked well last time he ran it so it has to work well again just because, like that draw against NC State. ND has a great defense so they should bring him back to earth this week but if not, UM has a chance to get into the top 25 (lucky #13?) with the two score margin upset.

Now about that defense that can't stop the yards or the points this year from being piled up . . .

mi@mic@ne

Dukes success early in the season has given us more open field in the passing game. Duke can score from any place on the field so the teams must key on him.

Our d is young but i am seeing some good physical play...guys holding the backs up for some vicious hits ... we are really hitting people now.

That last touchdown that Morris threw as a 60 yard rope. Testerverde comes to mind when i see it dropping in before the d back can get there. Our offense finally has dangerous perimeter talent.

UMike

herbie..I ran track and played basketball for NMB parks and recreation when I was a kid

HawaiiCane

Willie Will, what did SMorris17 say to ND after that last one? So excited to rep 'The U' this week here in the Chi! We should have a where in the 'Space is Greg Cox... as he'll be joining us for the ND game!

mi@mic@ne

Oh another thing.. the reason we are so successful on short yardage d is because we are playing 5 down. As i recall we used to play 5 down on our normal run d and then we would trade for an extra d back...I think we should play more 5 man against ND since they dont have a good passing game.

Ohio_Cane

Are people actually complaining about ANYTHING about this team right now? Uhh, we're 4-1, people. FOUR WINS AND ONE LOSS.

Most people here predicted a losing season, or close to it, before the season. Be happy with what U've got - which is a very inexperienced team that is playing with heart and determination we haven't seen in about 8 years, and winning the close games because of it. U know, instead of losing the close ones like last year.

CGNC

Ohio, I know, right? Wrap this win up, I will take it!

Some how and I have seen this before over the years, when some people have a different opinion than someone else's it gets all blown out of proportion. Different isn't necessarily WRONG. It is just DIFFERENT. No one said SM17 was bad that I can remember. Enjoy the win people and let the season play out.

But since you opened the door, I'll walk in and sit on yo couch. You complained about a lot of his throws but you tell me I need to realize that he's human?? That's the dumbest thing I ever heard. So you are saying that he's human and going to make mistakes but you criticize him when he does?? How backwards are you? If you don't think Morris had a good game you are crazy. We don't need you saying what he needs to work on, you should be glad at his production, you think he and his coaches don't already know and know more than you?? Its called a "process" if you didn't know. Let me explain it for ya, see last week he had a career high then he topped that this past week, so that should tell you that he and his coaches are working on improving and I don't think you told them to. We haven't had any kind of production like this from this position in a decade, and this is the position you want to criticize??? Now on the defensive side its a lot of room for improvement so it should get majority of the criticism.

Bottom line, he had 566 yds and 5 td's that = great game, be happy wit it. We are 4-1 = pretty good, be happy wit it. Do we have a lot to work on yes but we should bcuz we are GROWING up we are young. Stop worrying about how we are getting results and be glad we got the results.

Nothing is wrong wit criticism but we have too much at times and at the wrong times.

I'm pretty sure Greg Cox is complaining about Wieclaw forgetting how to make the chip shot field goals. The rest of us are complaining about the coordinator from Temple.

He told the Ultra Lame players players that we'll see em again in two years and the score will be different. I've liked him ever since then lol

Herbie & Umike,

My older brother David Roach has worked for NMB Parks & Rec for about 30 years. (Summertime coordinator.) He taught P.E. fulltime at Natural Bridge Elem. for about 35 years before retiring a couple of years back.

You may have been coached by him...

I'm almost certain Stephen Morris can out quarterback anyone on this blog.
