Nice stats, was wondering about some of them.

Check this out:

Davon Johnson is 17th in rushing according to ESPN.

Who knew?

The canes are a better team this year and they will shock some rope. They just need to improve in some areas on defense like with their assignments and communications. And they will get better. Perry man is all acc and player of the week. Duke is freshman of the week

I think we saw something special yesterday on the road by true freshman. I think al golden likes the potential he sees. Manhattan Kansas will be the canes opportunity to announce to the world that they are now really back for years to come.

CGNC

"I could sit there and say, we should have just stepped on their throat when we were up big number and we let them back a little bit," Golden said. "But that's kinda who we are right now."

“I couldn't be prouder of a group,” Miami coach Al Golden said. “Down 14-0 in the ACC in a terrible environment, rattled a little bit, dropping balls, offsides and things like that, just to hang in there, that was good.”

CBS SPorts

CoCane

They can beat K State. IF they hold them to FG's they can outscore them. The D will give up sh*tload of yards though...

CGNC

Someone mentioned to Golden that it might be a “little disconcerting” that the Eagles passed for 441 yards.

“Just a little disconcerting?” Golden replied. “We’ll get it worked out. I knew it wasn’t going to be perfect. But look at how many of those [young] guys were playing for us and look how many came through for us. We made a commitment to do that. It was wholesale.”

CGNC,

I guess Lol means no prediction from you. Or... You're laughing at the score you would predict. Either way, laughter keeps you young

CGNC

I agree Co, they can beat K State. The team definitely looks in better condition. LOL but I saw Bama last night and those guys are monsters

CGNC

Co I will say this: If the D keeps missing assignments and have players out of position we win maybe by 3. If they can fix some of that we can win by 10. How's that? LOL!

Man it was nice to see Davon Johnson catching balls yesterday! A lot of kids would have given up on Miami but he hung in, worked harder and got what he wanted finally. I am so happy for him!

CGNC LIL ZILLA IS NOW ON CANESPACE !!!! HE WATCHED THE GAME AND HAD ALOT TO SAY ABOUT DUKE JOHNSON!!!! HAHA

Sean Spence is a Beast!!!

I have no doubt our offense will show up against KSU but i am scared for our defense in that game, not saying we'll lose but that Klein kid is gonna run wild on us next week!

Old Skool

Just for yucks, I checked out what the Boston papers were saying. Duke Johnson is finally mentioned in the last paragraph of the entire article and only his 54 yard run merits any notice.

We have lots of tape on them now. As they do us.

We'll find a way because we have some selfless leaders now.

Protect the football and we win

2 ints for Tracy Howard and 1 for Kacy Rodgers-- their QB doesn't respect our defense so he will give them opportunities.

Tsully76

Good win yesterday for our Canes, Next big game on my radar for our Canes is in Atlanta on September 22nd. It would be nice to beat Kansas State but not a must win game. These conference games especially these division games hold most importance to me nonconference games are icing on a cake for our Canes right now. Go Canes

Zakkee

If we get to the head, the body will fall = Colin Klein has to go. Denzel or Shayon must get to him.

mi@mic@ne

K State is really an option offense. So our D needs to be disciplined and focus on the man they are supposed to pick up.

The defense will get better as the season progresses. Its not like the old days where the majority of the college game was running the football. Theres a lot more scheming going on. At some point tho we will get to the point where we can beat a team physically on the inside.. pass rush and stuffing the run.. not sure we are at that point yet. More depth of big guys with a motor will solve the problem.

We had the opportunity in the fourth to blow them out of the game. Just needed a couple of plays in out favor that would have made it look easier. But we sort of lost our composure. Great win.

Pleases me that he's reacting that way.

j.w.

That's two posts that I have had disappear on me! Had two long analysis posts that are missing, what's going on?

j.w.

Let's try this for the third and final time:
1) Morris is much improved- still had his share of mistakes that he got away with, but he looks like a leader on the sidelines and, when he commits to a throw, it's on the money.
2) Get used to saying DUUUUUUKKKKKEEEE for 3 years, that kid just gets it. Nothing else you can say, other than isn't it great to see a natural talent again?
4) Hurns looked good, Scott made rookie mistakes that should be correctable, Dorsett is a heck of a returner and looks like in time will be a weapon, Davon was a pleaant surprise, more so as a mentor than a producer but I'm proud of the kid, and KT looked like KT unfortunately (hope he snaps out of it). TE largely disappeared.
5) OL looked dominant at times, solid throughout. We can win with this group, they look storng and athletic.

We've had a lot of great returners even over the last 6 years. The fact that none can really finish the deal outside of Lamar Miller and Travis Benjamin vs. O-State is a testament to just how heaven sent Devin Hester was and is. Think about it: If these guys are so talented, then how do we describe Hester? Just saying, that boy is special.

He finishes the deal routinely.

j.w.

(I split this in two hoping things work out better)
6) DL, other than Robinson, disappointed. They don't look overmatched, just lost at times to me. Chickillo doesn't look bad, he's just getting double teamed and hasn't figured out how to fight through yet. WIlling to bet they will get better.
7) Perryman is the best LB we've had in a decade. This kid is damned special! Gaines looked like Gaines for most of the game, but made a few nice plays in the 2nd half. Wish he were big enough to play at DE, he is fine when he has to go straight ahead, but misdirection kills him. Kind of like watching Doofenschmirtz fail to recognize Perry the Platypus without his hat on. And 31, please change your number! Spence made that one special, and I can't remember ever seeing one player chasing someone so many times on long plays. Hoping this is a case of being young and not ready.
8) Finnie looked ok, the DB looked real good against deep passes, not so much against anything else. I need to adjust my expectaitons re: Telemaque. He isn't going to be the guy we thought he was.
9) Loved, loved, loved special teams. Botts is a real weapon, he doesn't get flustered and really is a find. Kick coverage units are great, this is a good sign for next year for us re: defense.
10) Conditioning is unbelelievably better than at any time in the last decade. No cramps, no injuries that I saw, the team looks strong and tough. Golden has accomplished something really special with this area of the team.
11) Golden looks more relaxed, kidn of like he knows what to expect and knows how the kids will react, where last year he hoped he could get through to them. Fisch did exactly what he said he would do, and say what you want about yards given up, but D'Onofrio's D kept the Eagles out of the end zone for 3 quarters, despite a lot of proven talent.
Overall, it was fun to watch this game, the team is entertaining again for the first time in a long time and looks much, much better in terms of fundamentals, conditioning, strength, and attitude. We're moving forward, and it's been years since we've said that.

j.w.

I was, CEO- love to hear his comments on 31- or anyone else's for that matter.

orange 'n green in the vein

K-State stole that game last year with a simple offensive scheme (OSU's one effective play down D'No's throat all day) and are stronger this year. They will probably not come up with the breaks as often as they did last year, for example don't expect Fisch to get too cute on the play calling with six feet to go for the winning TD with the game on the line this weekend, hopefully, and won't rack up 10 wins but will be tougher to beat on the road with a bigger stadium and a more supportive home crowd. Golden could use a day of out-coaching one of these legends in the stadium named for him to get some traction going and had the team play well in the second half of back-to-back road games last year but Armstrong's absence back there on defense is glaring right now and I'm not sure there's a five day fix for the defensive issues. When you're undefeated in college football, every game is important and this game will garner UM some poll votes if they can escape with a win.

Maybe D'No watches the footage and realizes his corners in press resulted in positive defensive plays and switches it up finally. Better late than never.

CoCane

CGNC,

Don't forget K State's defense is better than BC's.

Win the turnover battle, hold them to FG's while we score TD's & don't let Klein go Cam Newton, we'll win...

There IT is right there.

When Fisch sent in bogus plays...you could see Morris check out (mentally). You have to keep these young kids interested, they know when you're trying to dial them down and just cruise. Unfortunately, this generation of kids doesn't possess a cruise control, they totally black out, and thus near pick 6's to end the game.

DO U GUYS THINK WE WOULD OF STILL WON IF THEY HAD ALL THEIR PLAYERS AND THEIR WR DIDN'T DROP SOME OF THOSE PASSES???

Best part of conditioning work is that 7 guys aren't on IR already as opposed to every previous year pretty much.

Panamacitycane

My kstate prediction is that we put up points on them and if..and I mean if we make good adjustments to defense then Miami will win. These freshman became men yesterday and that was a great way to start their college career. The nerves I don't think will be as bad as they were that first quarter yesterday.

Fisch kept sending in plays where the WRs didn't have to do much work to get open. Because those guys aren't good at getting open. If they do start being able to get separation downfield, Morris has more than enough arm to score a ton of points.

But for now, Fisch is going to keep sending in screens, short out routes, and the occasional slant pattern, because it's working, even if it's not pretty. If Morris "checks out," that's on him, not on Fisch.

No.

Panamacitycane

One good positive about the defense yesterday that nobody seems to point out is the redzone defense was actually Damn good. Not counting the two first drives I really think that was freshman and sophomore nerves and just made mental errors on both playing and coaching. Im hoping that they see in the film in redzone they are pressing up more which magically made it hard for bc to do anything. So in theory I think if you do that farther down the field maybe it makes it hard to pass? Call me crazy I guess.

I think Rashawn Scott has the speed necessary for a couple of Sluggo routes that go all the way next week. JMO.

Considering they needed a pick six and Duke catching BC with their pants down to win? No. BC dropped a score and if Perryman doesn't catch that slant that was going for a first down, there's your point swing right there. Morris also under-threw a TD into double coverage and got very lucky to get a few pass attempts back. That's part of what makes this ACC win so good, it easily should and could have been a loss, instead, you're guaranteed a game lead over one of the two division favorites by Tuesday morning.

Nice to have the moonbat (minus that strangely entertaing bat silhouette against the moon icon though) back in time for football by the way.

Oh, yeah. The bat signal...

Zakkee

Zilla, I think we still win because we had better talent and conditioning than they did. We wasted a lot of opportunities in the 4th because we were ahead on the scoreboard (dialed it down). If BC had been performing better and the score was different, then some of those wasted series in the 4th would have had added importance and significance to our OC. The game would have been played and called differently, but we still would've won IMO.

dj, I see your point, but does the OC have a responsibility to put the players in positions to be successful physically, but not mentally?

The Dude

Here's what I took from yesterdays game. The OLine is solid. Kehoe has those guys ready. The RBs are talented also. I was really suprised when they werent used down by the goal line to step on their throats. The WRs are solid. My LOF Hurns looks like he will be our leading receiver. In addition to Hurns, Dorsett and Lewis round us out nicely. The Special Teams looks like our best unit. We can kick and punt better than most and Dorsett and DJ8 are very good returners. The defense was completely lost at times, but they did look fast and strong. They did a good job stopping the run for most of the day. Which ties into K State. K State isnt an air it out team. They want to run. Our DLine has to close the gaps. If we can get ahead early they may struggle to catch up. I am a little afraid of them in passing situations though, just because we are so awful at defending against the pass and I dont want to see an otherwise below average passer look like a gifted one. Our DBs are still dropping INTs and we will need to catch our chances at K State. This game will go a long way for us if we win and I think we can. Miami 38 KSU 31.

And I could not agree more with THIS ^^. There's no point fretting that the 'Canes didn't look dominant. They looked young, and raw. Repeatedly. But they WON. A season-opening (conference) road win for a team that young, and that raw, is just freaking huge.

orange 'n green in the vein

dj, there were stretches in the game where UM started to look dominant outside of the soft corner play that hung over this game like the Sword of Damocles, little glimpses, but they were there. Getting consistency next week will be the deciding factor, UM ran off a 40-9 portion of that game after 14 minutes that for the first week represents a real good indication of what's possible when and if they get this thing clicking.

Now we'll see if BC actually turns out to be a good or bad team this year in about a month or so but for now I'm working from the assumptions they're a marginal bowl team and the Wildcats are an upper third bowl team that will end up with 8 to 9 wins depending on what happens Saturday.

Well, there was never any question in my mind about which was the more *talented* team. Looking at that team yesterday, every time I started getting a little frustrated that they weren't making it look easy, I was able to reassure myself with reasonable confidence that with some more game time under its belt, this team will be badass.

a solid win for a young team though I don't think BC will win many. Shocked by the initail negativity on here at 14-0, 1st quarter and suprised by the bravado of going on the road against a ranked team that beat us last year. I enjoyed the win but wasn't as impressed as some:

Morris, great arm but i'm still not sold on him,

o-line and ST were great, team strengths.

wr average
rb below average without Duke
LB average, perryman good, promising from johnson
db sold in deep coverage, weak everywhere else

my biggest concern is obviously the d, how does every qb look great against us? The fact K-State have a run alot helps us.

The Canes basically ran a hurry-up offense the entire game on Saturday. They were 120th in the country, dead-last among all teams that play football, in offensive plays run in 2011. When coaches reviewed the season, they noticed how horrible the team was at simple things like getting in and out of huddles. With all of these weapons on the field, Miami was killing itself by not having enough opportunities to give them the football.

So Golden and offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch decided to eliminate the huddle for the Boston College game and see how things went. And the amazing thing about it was they figured out a way to still run their normal offense and shuttle in position groups and put different formations on the field while doing it.

Even with BC dominating time of possession at 33:39-26:21, Miami ran 79 plays on Saturday after averaging around 61 plays last season. That's 18 more times the Eagles had to defend Duke Johnson, Stephen Morris and Allen Hurns.

Wow that is a fast break tough pace both teams played with yesterday. BC ran 85 plays, most teams will not do that, 85 plays and 79 plays is about 30 more plays on offense then normal.

1. For all those making these silly list, the sky is not falling. We just beat a Conference foe in their house 1st game out the gate with a Dade County HS squad and Stephen Morris.

2. BC is not depleted they brought most of their guys back and teams like BC never have real stars, it is like VT they always have someone ready behind anyone that goes down.

3. You can win based on heart, stats aside and schemes aside we wanted that game more and we pulled out the W.

4. It is plainly obvious to everyone including the coaches our D sucks, relax Golden has a plan remember, I am sure in his binder there was no 441 yards in his plan, he will get it fixed give it time. Last time I checked we did not have Reggie White lining up on our D line.

5. BC qb can play has a nice arm, do not discount what they did they will be improved this season.

6. we did to BC what Maryland did to us last season.

7. Everyone knows the biggest improvement in football comes between your 1st and 2nd game, for us as we did not travel some of our younger guys and more will get in the game on the 3rd game we will see a simliar improvement btween game 3 and game 4. After game 4 we will be "who we are"

Well, it's not looking much like D'Onofrio knows what he's doing. But I'll give him another half a season before I render a personal verdict.

There's not exactly a whole lot of real experience on that defense. The guys don't look lead-footed or weak like they did in the past (although the DL may, in fact, be weak, they might also just not have much in the way of pass-rushing moves, since their run D isn't really that bad).

So either a light bulb will start to go on above their skulls, or it won't -- and if it doesn't, that's on D'Onofrio's head. After all, Fisch is working with a pretty inexperienced unit, too, and they're parsecs ahead of where the D is.

CoCane

If he's truly D'No's friend, he'll tell him to scheme in attack mode so he won't cost the team games. It would be ashame for Golden to have to fire him because he ain't have the heart to tell him his defensive philosophy ain't sh*t...

Ok,

I'm still enjoying the win. However I'm having an uneasy feeling in my gut...

This passing game looks exciting in the first game (defense not so much). The short passing game (a la bubble screen U) is cute, and works well when we have a qb who is precise, a line that gives him time, and receivers that can catch it, make somebody miss, and run. However, I'm wondering how long it's going to take Defensive Coordinators to catch up and adjust? Wasn't there a play in the game where a BC defender sat down on one of those dinker passes and almost took it for a pick six? Do we have a vertical passing game to respond to what is sure to be a chess match between J Fisch and the opposition? I certainly hope so.

Because D'No has them in a soft zone coverage and any accurate and/or experienced QB will pick that apart.

Shoot most good QBs today talk about throwing to the back shoulder of a WR whhich is about a 12 in spot.

Against UM they can throw to a 6-8 FOOT spot in the zone where no UM player is located and their WR is running free and clear.

Zone defenses is for teams that do NOT have the personnel or athletes to match up and play 1:1. Miami has the athletes, just assign them a man and let them stick them.

UM 72, KSU 69

UM wins it with a three-point shot at the buzzer as time expires.

TWO REASONS as to why D'no is to blame for the D.

1. How does Bethune Cookman put up big numbers if they have less talent than we do? You can't tell me that they had better talent on offense than we had on defense. BC had like three of their starters missing and the the defense is suppose to be ahead of offenses right now and they still killed us.And his main argument is that we play 20yds off the wrs because of talent

2. How do you totally shut down georgia tech, if its the players and they don't understand your scheme? They totally understood the scheme that game

SJMPARMAN

Golden said today he has the "utmost confidence" in the defense he is running. Well, it is ranked 106 out 107 teams in pass defense. I have the utmost confidence when I say he is out of his mind if he thinks that is acceptable.

Sunday rewind | K-State 51, Missouri State 9
By KELLIS ROBINETT
The Kansas City Star

1. K-State’s secondary doesn’t look any better than it did last year.
The Wildcats were weak against the pass last season, and allowed opposing quarterbacks to throw for more than 263 yards per game. On Saturday, Missouri State easily topped that number. K-State struggled to cover Missouri State receivers across the middle of the field and gave up 323 passing yards. Ashton Glaser threw for 257 of those yards, with Kierra Harris coming off the bench to throw for 66. They could have had more if not for drops and overthrows. The Wildcats used several new players on Saturday, and coaches often asked defensive backs to line up 15 yards off the line of scrimmage. Maybe that had something to do with the poor performance. Jarard Milo and Thomas Ferguson both played at safety and Ty Zimmerman briefly left with an injury, and plenty of different cornerbacks saw the field. Nigel Malone played well, Milo led K-State with 10 tackles and Randall Evans broke up two passes, but everyone else covered poorly. When asked what K-State’s secondary needs to improve before playing Miami, Bill Snyder didn’t hold back. Take your pick, he said. I think they played with effort, we just didn’t react well to the thrown ball.

2. K-State can run the ball without Collin Klein

The Wildcats rushed for an impressive 324 yards on Saturday, with senior quarterback Collin Klein only accounting for 54 of them. That’s a nice change from a year ago, when Klein was the team’s leading rusher. John Hubert churned out 152 yards and a touchdown, with a 95-yard run in the fourth quarter highlighting his night. Angelo Pease looked solid with 38 yards on eight carries, and Braden Wilson was effective running short yardages. He scored a touchdown. Even backup quarterback Daniel Sams got in on the fun with a 46-yard touchdown run. The key to that success was strong blocking up front. K-State’s young offensive line won the battle of the line of scrimmage, and Wilson provided some devastating blocks when he was in the game.

3. Deja vu?
There were plenty of comparisons to last year’s opener against Eastern Kentucky, but even though it took K-State more than three quarters to pull away from Missouri State these Wildcats look further along than they did at this time a year ago. The offense handled itself much better. Even when it was struggling in the first half, it put together several nice drives. It simply settled for field goals. That’s a relatively easy problem to fix, considering K-State scored 35 points in the fourth quarter. The defense didn’t look nearly as good as it did in last year’s opener, but the Wildcats defended the run well. Shoring up the secondary looks like the main key.

Player Evaluations

A few that were good:

1. John Hubert

On top of 152 rushing yards, the running back reeled off the second longest run in school history Saturday night in the fourth quarter. His 95-yard touchdown run was also the longest ever at Snyder Family Stadium.

2. Anthony Cantele

K-State’s kicker did everything he was asked Saturday night. He made three short field goals in the first half to give the Wildcats a 9-6 lead, and pinned Missouri State close to its own goal line with two perfectly placed kickoffs. You can’t ask for a better game from your kicker.

3. Braden Wilson

The senior fullback scored a touchdown on a four-yard run in the fourth quarter, and celebrated like he had just won the game.
It’s been a while, Wilson said, so I was one excited individual.
His end-zone dance must have motivated his teammates, because it ignited a 35-point fourth quarter. Wilson blocked extremely well on running plays, and allowed Klein and K-State’s running backs to break free for big gains. Along with a solid effort from the offensive line, the Wildcats were strong up front.

4. Arthur Brown

The stats show a relatively quiet game from K-State’s top linebacker: Five tackles and two pass breakups. But I thought he played very well. His presence in the middle of the field helped stuff Missouri State’s running attack all night, and he made several nice plays on short passes. The Bears did not want to challenge him.

5. Nigel Malone

Everyone wanted to know what Malone could do for an encore to his brilliant junior season. Well, he already has an interception one game into his senior year. He didn’t play perfectly on Saturday, but he broke up two passes and picked off another.

6. Tramaine Thompson

His 89-yard punt return for a touchdown made his night special all by itself, but he also caught five passes for 52 yards and a touchdown. He should give K-State a nice three-man rotation at receiver along with Tyler Lockett and Chris Harper.

A few that were bad:

1. Defensive line
One of the biggest complaints Snyder had after the game was that K-State didn’t sack Glaser a single time. Though he was hurried a time or two by Meshak Williams, the Wildcats defensive line didn’t mount much of a pass rush. K-State coaches experimented with different players at defensive end, and John Sua and Vai Lutui combined for two tackles in the middle.

2. Allen Chapman
The cornerback didn’t break up any passes, and could have done a much better job in coverage.

3. Thomas Ferguson
The safety came into the game listed as a starter, but ended up splitting time with Milo. But while Milo led the team with 10 tackles, Ferguson made zero. It will be interesting to see who starts against Miami. Ferguson does deserve props for jumping on a fumble in the end zone in the first half. That prevented Missouri State from taking a lead.

4. Tre Walker
Without Emmanuel Lamur around, I expected Walker to take on a bigger role in K-State’s defense. Maybe he will as the season goes on, but he didn’t do much on Saturday. The junior linebacker made one tackle, and had no impact on the game.

Collin Klein called his own plays at times during the game. He hopes he can continue doing so throughout the season.

K-State allowed 323 passing yards, a step back from last year’s average of 263.

orange 'n green in the vein

Yeah, but here's the mitigating factor on some of that Monty, from the AP recap;

"The Wildcats certainly didn't give the Hurricanes, who beat Boston College earlier in the day, any helpful video to prepare for next week's matchup in Manhattan.

They hardly blitzed on defense and ran a vanilla offense, and that was part of the reason the game was close into the second half. The run-first Klein didn't take off on a designed running play until midway through the second quarter, and he finished with just 54 yards rushing."
