The Shortlist to South Beach contains 25 teams and now is ranked in order of merit instead of conference affiliation as such:
Notre Dame, Florida, Alabama, Kansas State, Oregon State, Oregon, Cincinnati, Ohio State, Louisville, Rutgers, Mississippi State, Ohio, West Virginia, LSU, Texas A&M, South Carolina, Florida State, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Clemson, Georgia, Southern Cal, TCU, Arizona State, Northwestern.
Two teams won games Saturday to remain on the Shortlist for another week, one a nail-biter, one a runaway victory:
1) LSU hangs on to survive a spirited South Carolina challenge at home 23-21. The Tigers haven't won in College Station, Texas since 1987 but will have their best chance this week to do so since they were blown out in their last trip 17 years ago.
2) TCU routes Baylor as they renew their old South West Conference rivalry in Waco in the Big 12, 49-21. Revenge for their 25 straight regular season winning streak being broken last year or just great coaching by the new linebackers coach in Fort Worth? You decide.
A single team lost last week in a Shortlist elimination situation;
1) Baylor uses the off week to get worse against upper echelon Big 12 competition as they go back to back losses off the Shortlist this year. Art Briles still gets the title of best High School coach to ever step up in weight class though and might end up in Austin to complete his Texas food-chain coaching ascendancy college career arc leaving only the blue star on the silver helmet in Big D to check off in the future at some point.
I predict five teams this week will fall from their spot at the end of the Shortlist:
Texas A&M, South Carolina, Northwestern, Texas Tech and Arizona State.
Enjoy the games this week and join me back here next week as Hurricane fans all over hope that Clemson still finds themselves listed somewhere on the Shortlist to South Beach.

Yea 86, that was one of the most divisive and disputed wagers ever between bloggers at the time. its crazy how irrelevant it eventually ended. Those two were super talented, but I had He-Man without question back then. He always had sparks of eliteness but never achieve any consistency performance wise. Sad for both. They were unanimously considered sure-shot NFLers back then.

Kenny needs help turning on the computer, so he doesn't blog, but he does tailgate in a style that would make the good Dr. Thompson proud.
Terrance is Terrance, so I guess yes for him, I call 86 by his name always but he doesn't always do the same for me, not that it matters either way. I call Canezilla just 'Zilla because he looks like he could put a hurting on metropolitan Tokyo to me which is why when I swing by his tailgate I keep my eyes on my phone and only communicate by blogging to spare his reptilian wrath. When I met and talked to NFL star Andre Johnson in Tampa before the Super Bowl a few years ago I stood nest to him to get a photo. To be honest he was a big, fit athletic guy but physcially he was not the MOST impressive player I have ever seen and I felt I could stick him 1:1. Now of course I couldn't but I felt I could. It just goes to show U how how much hard work, technique and dedication go into making a great player.
Also at the same event was WR Steve Smith. Now that guy was a SMURF. I could NOT believe he was an NFL player. NO WAY! But what a player he turned out to be also.
I learned then that it is as much what is in a players head, and heart, that matters as much as their 40 time, vertical jump or bench press.

Canespace, circa January 2008:
And then there were four...Jacory Harris, Taylor Cook, Cannon Smith and Robert Marve.
Last year, there were none. Now, Canes offensive coordinator Patrick Nix finds himself with four talented quarterbacks to choose from. Poor Patrick, what a terrible, terrible problem to have.
The highlight of the 2007 season? One could argue for beating TAMU at the OB early in the season. But nothing beats beating FSU at the Doak! If you recall, Kyle Wright went down in a heap late in the second quarter. In steps season starter, but current bench warmer, Kirby Freeman to save the day. Then, Kirby, who just so happens to be named after a famous vacuum cleaner company because well, you know why, proceeds to go all of 1 for 8 with two interceptions before "The Drive".
That's right, the Kirbomatic had completed MORE passes to the team wearing Garnett and Gold than his own team. Then some how, some way he summoned the strength from the "U" tattoo on his back and put the entire team on his back to lead the winning drive with around two minutes to play in the game.

MORE CANESPACE FROM 2008:
One of the strengths for the University of Miami football team going into the 2008 season is the talented and diverse stable of running backs returning to the Canes next year. With dependable Javaris James, multi-talented Shawnbrey McNeal, elusive Craig Cooper and speedy Lee Chambers all competing for playing time, the battle in the backfield will be both exciting and entertaining to watch in practice.

MORE FROM 2008 FROM THE BLOG:
Speaking of which, Coach Hill will also get his hands on a boat load of new talent coming to the Canes courtesy of the excellent recruiting class of 2008. The talented gang from the 305 is lead by Aldarius Johnson and Kendall Thompkins from MNWHS and Thearon Collier and Davon Johnson from BTWHS.
And don't forget about Travis Benjamin either. Word on the street is the kid has mad skills, blazing speed and is elusive as can be. He has already been penciled in by some as the Canes starting punt returner for 2008.

MORE FROM JANUARY 2008:
Now suddenly, after weeks of no news at all, and fresh off his trek deep into Kansas to snatch up coveted LB Aurthur Brown, Randy Shannon has hired Kansas defensive coordinator Bill "Forever" Young. Young, who will leave behind the Jayhawks players, Coach Mangino and the cold, grey town of Lawrence, Kansas agreed on Thursday to coach the Canes defense in 2008.
In interviews following his decision, Bill and his wife Lawana Young stated they wanted a challenge and a change of scenery. Both of these will be offered in bunches by the small, private university located in warm, sunny Coral Gables known affectionately as The U. Now, Forever Young (or Mr. Bill, we haven't decided which one will stick yet) will have to get busy fixing a defense that simply was offensive to watch in many games last year. Giving up 51 points to the Sooners in Norman? Ugly. Down 27-0 against UNC at the half? Disheartening. Losing 48-0 to Virginia in the final game at the Orange Bowl? Mind numbing.
Coach Young replaces coach "Timmy" Walton who was dismissed from his duties by The Boss after a disastrous 2007 campaign. Walton, as many of you know, has landed in Memphis and will coach the Tigers defense in 2008. Young will take over Walton's former players and the star studded recruiting class of 2008.

CANESPACE FROM SPRING GAME 2009:
Wide Receiver: If there was ever any doubt let it be known: Thearon Collier can ball. Be ready to see him early and often in games this season making tough catches over the middle and moving the chains. This fearless slot receiver might be the missing link that finally allows the outside recievers to get open and get deep this season.
And wouldn't we LOVE to see some of that with LaRon Byrd, Travis Benjamin, Davon Johnson, Tommy Streeter and my personal favorite Aldarius "Glue Hands" Johnson scoring a quick six. Here, for the first time ever on any blog, a perfect view of the soon to be famous six million dollar (projected NFLU signing bonus) glue hands!
And by the way, don't forget WR Kendal Thompkins who caught a pass (as predicted) and WR Leonard Hankerson who made a nice leaping catch for a big gain during the "game". The Canes are loaded at wide-out and will take advantage of other teams secondaries in 2009.

So does UM really have any chance on Sat? A night game at the OB... errr Dolphins Stadium and UM having a veteran starter... a new QB.... a solid run defense.... errr... a work in progress... sigh, 56-17 FSU... not pretty.
Posted by: nick | October 19, 2012 at 01:04 AM
Nick...IF UM plays the perfect game in all three phases YES they can win against FSU.
The question is: Will they? I doubt it but I think they beat the spread.
Posted by: 86Cane | October 19, 2012 at 01:07 AM
I cant see a scenario where Miami wins. I'm thinking FSU 38 Miami 14. If we compete and make a game out of it I will be pretty happy. If we win OGV will be happy to know that AG will be getting that lifetime contract. If Miami wins they will need to keep Morris clean. Morris will have to be sharp and the WR saavy with great hands. Mike James will need 2-4 TDs and 100 yards. Defense (what there is) will need turn overs at least 3. Special Teams will need field position all night.

Goldy: All right, it's f[]_[]ck!ng zero years. Are you happy, you crazy f[]_[]ck?
OGV Sobchak: ...It's a league game, Goldy.
In all seriousness though Dude, before the season started I figured UM would be in a tooth and nail scrap for .500 and if the mutants from Philly somehow won just 2/3 from F$U, Cho-kie Tech, and the scum of the earth pot of gold at the end of the rainbow hoarders then nothing else, I'd shut up for the rest of the season and say it was a good year all things considered. So if they don't win this game, it's time for a Fukushima incident.

HOLY COW, TIMMY IS ALIVE AND DOING WELL:
Biography: Tim Walton joined the Detroit Lions as secondary coach in 2009. Before coming to Detroit, he was the defensive coordinator at the University of Memphis (2008) and had additional responsibilities coaching the safeties. Throughout his 14-year collegiate coaching career, Walton coached 13 players who were eventually drafted into the NFL, including five first round picks (Patriots S Brandon Merriweather, Seahawks CB Kelly Jennings, Giants CB Kenny Phillips, Redskins S LaRon Landry and Cardinals S Antrel Rolle) and four second round picks (S Idrees Bashir, WR/KR Devin Hester, S Michael Stone and CB Corey Webster).

Lions promote Tim Walton, hire Marcus Robertson
Posted Feb 13, 2012
By Tim Twentyman
The Lions have promoted Tim Walton to Secondary/Third Down Package coach. The team announced the hiring of Marcus Robertson as Defensive Assistant/Secondary coach earlier on Monday.
Walton enters his fourth season with the Lions after joining head coach Jim Schwartz's coaching staff in 2009.
"Tim is a valuable member of our staff and we're increasing the scope of his duties," Schwartz said. "Third down defense is a very important part of football."
Walton will now oversee the team's third down package on defense, an area the Lions ranked third in the NFL last year. They allowed teams to convert on third down only 32.7 (67-of-205) percent of the time. In 2010, the Lions were 20th on third down with a conversion rate of 38.9 (77-198). The improvement of 6.21 percent from 2010 to 2011 was the largest improvement by a defense on third down in the NFL this season.
Schwartz is confident the Lions can continue that trend under Walton.
The team also generated 21 interceptions, which were the fifth-most in the NFL. Walton's secondary collected 16 of those. The Lions were one of just four teams to have four defensive backs register at least three interceptions.

So let me get this straight...former UM Head Coach Randy Shannon is a LB coach for a college team while Walton, who got fired by Shannon because he stunk as a DC, is coaching the secondary and just got promoted by the NFL's Detroit Lions?
The world is a VERY strange place indeed.
Posted by: 86Cane | October 19, 2012 at 08:36 AM
The Lions have added the third down defensive package to the responsibilities of secondary coach Tim Walton.
For Walton, it's a promotion and a step closer to his goal of becoming an NFL head coach.
"My next step would hopefully to become a full-time coordinator," Walton told Detroitlions.com. "That's my next step and my goal in the next couple years. Eventually, if I could do well in that for awhile, head coach would be the next step.
"But I'm just going to take it one day at a time and I just want to do well next year and do a good job for Coach and do a good job with the defensive backs and third down and that's my main focus. Hopefully, that will open doors down the road."
Walton was a candidate to be the Rams' assistant defensive coordinator for the passing game earlier this offseason, before opting to re-sign with the Lions. He's obviously earning a reputation around the league and the Lions clearly see his potential to increase his workload.

Patrick Nix begins his third season on the CSU football staff in the fall of 2012, returning to serve as the Offensive Coordinator, Recruiting Coordinator and the Offensive Line coach. Nix was added to the staff just before the 2010 season.
“I am excited to be here at Charleston Southern,” said Nix. “This is a unique opportunity for me because I am able to coach at a high level of football and bring my faith to the job, while still being involved with my family. I believe that this program is an important part of the school’s vision to become a university nationally recognized for integrating faith in learning, leading and serving, and I am happy to be a part of it.”
Nix most recently spent two years (2007-08) at the University of Miami, where he was the offensive coordinator and primary play caller for the Hurricanes. He served in the same position from 2004-06 for Georgia Tech, part of a five-year stint with the Yellow Jackets.
“We are privileged to have Coach Nix join the CSU family,” said Mills. “We are excited about the expertise he brings professionally to our staff and team, and equally enthused for the character that he displays to colleagues he works along side and the young men who are entrusted under his care.”

Tommie Robinson:
Veteran collegiate assistant Tommie Robinson enters his third season with the Cardinals and sixth in the NFL after being hired as running backs coach on 2/5/10. A 16-year collegiate assistant who coached in eight bowl games, Robinson joined the Cardinals in 2010 after working the previous three seasons as running backs coach for the University of Miami (FL).
In 2011, Robinson helped running back Beanie Wells set career highs with 245 carries for 1,047 yards (4.3 yard avg.) and 10 TDs. Wells became the first player in franchise history to record 1,000 rushing yards and 10 rushing TDs in a single season. He also established a franchise record with 228 rushing yards against the St. Louis Rams on 11/27/11, becoming just the third player in franchise history to rush for over 200 yards in a game.
Robinson joined the Hurricanes after working in 2006 as the running backs coach for the University of Memphis. Prior to joining Memphis, Robinson coached four seasons at Georgia Tech where he worked as an assistant under current Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey, who he played for at Troy State. At Georgia Tech, Robinson coached wide receivers for one season (2002) before tutoring tight ends for the next three seasons (2003-05). During the 2002 season, he worked with standout wide receivers Kerry Watkins and Will Glover, who both finished their careers among the top five receivers in Georgia Tech history. He spent the 2001 season as running backs coach at Oklahoma State where he worked with future NFL running back Tatum Bell.
Prior to coaching at Oklahoma State, Robinson spent three seasons in the NFL as an offensive assistant with the Dallas Cowboys coaching under Gailey. With the Cowboys, Robinson worked with the team’s wide receivers as well as helping out with special teams. While in Dallas, he worked with future Hall of Famers Michael Irvin, Emmitt Smith, and Troy Aikman. Before joining the Cowboys, Robinson spent time working with the running backs at UNLV (1998), four seasons coaching wide receivers at TCU (1994-97) and two years at Utah State (1992-93) coaching running backs.
Following his collegiate playing days, Robinson coached at Woodham High School (Pensacola, FL) in 1986-87 and at his alma mater Central High School (Phenix City, AL) from 1987-90 before taking his first college job as a graduate assistant at Arkansas in 1991.
Throughout his various college stops, Robinson received plenty of experience in the NFL as he served four different minority coaching internships with the New Orleans Saints, St. Louis Rams, Dallas Cowboys, and Miami Dolphins.
A native of Phenix City, AL, Robinson played for Gailey at Troy State where he was part of the 1984 Division II National Championship team. He was a three-year starter at strong safety for the Trojans and served as team captain.
Robinson earned his bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Troy State in 1985. He and his wife, Lartonyar, have three children, sons Dantrell and Trey, and daughter, Tawanda.

4 – Consecutive Homecoming games won by Miami. The Hurricanes’ last Homecoming loss was 19-16 in overtime against NC State in 2007.
8 – Touchdowns scored by Seminole tailback James Wilder this season, tied for second most in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
23.0% – Third down conversion rate of FSU opponents, which is the lowest mark in the NCAA.
30:18 – Miami’s total time of possession last week, in minutes, against North Carolina. This snapped a seven-game streak in which Miami trailed in time of possession.
31 – Times Miami has played a ranked FSU team in series history; the Canes have won 17 of those matchups.
46 – Average points per game scored by the Seminoles, ranking them sixth nationally.
56– Times the Hurricanes and Seminoles have met in the past. Though Miami holds a 31-25 series lead, but Florida State has won the last two meetings.
296.86 – Passing yards per game recorded by Miami, which ranks them 24th in the nation.
600 – Total offensive yards by Florida State in four games this season. This is only the second time in Seminole history that the team has eclipsed 600 yards four times in a season.
830 – Rushing yards totaled by Miami’s “Thunder and Lightning” duo of Mike James and Duke Johnson. The Hurricanes as a team have accumulated 985 rushing yards.

I'm with y'all, this is not a no-brainer blowout for Us.
We have the U on our helmet and that has always been a damaging sight to the psyche of FSU coaches and players. Bowden admitted this.
They are natural inclined to second guess themselves, over-think and over-compensate for their insecurity when they face Us.
Your big brother always knows U (strengths/weakness) and FSU knows we do. He has ownership over your development, so he's always in your head. Most of whats in your head, was put their by him lol.
We have to get back to believing in ourselves again, FSU should never believe and has never believed they will beat Us, until we hit the field and they've sensed our own disbelief.
A loss to FSU is ALWAYS due to coaching. They have an inferiority complex with Us, so they stay emotional. Emotion clouds reason and subsequently action as well.
All we have to do is stay calm and out-think them.
We've been approaching these games with them with too much emotion--which is a sign of disbelief or uncertainty in ourselves--that what they do...not Us.
If we approach the game with belief and certainty > over compensation for the lack thereof via emotions = UM 23 FSU 20

The CBs are going to show up--we need to play bump & run and rush the passer up the middle with DEs looping wide.
CB LaDarius Gunter said it best, "Its time to grow up."
Gunter, Bush, Howard, and McGee show up big time if D'No puts them on an island--in position to show up big-time.

2 second delayed blitz up the middle
Posted by: Zakkee | October 19, 2012 at 10:40 AM
And lets try and keep a spy on Manuel because we all know he is going to be running outside the pocket....
Posted by: UpNorthCane | October 19, 2012 at 10:58 AM
That 1 player (safety or LB--I don't care who it is) 2 second delayed blitzer is the spy. I don't believe that shadowing/spying will be enough to cause/control anything.
Spying/shadowing is passive-aggression.
Posted by: Zakkee | October 19, 2012 at 11:05 AM
SPy or notIi just don't want to see a QB running for first down constantly it drives me crazy...
Posted by: UpNorthCane | October 19, 2012 at 11:20 AM
About blitzing... If it were me I would blitz more up the middle and in the QB's face then far from the outside. That way the QB sees it coming and has to react which in turn could cause a bad decision. Most times I see the LB blitzing around the corner and the ball is already gone by the time they get there or the RB has a clear lane up the middle. Just an observation I've seen.
Posted by: THE MAN | October 19, 2012 at 11:41 AM
I agree. 2 second delayed blitz up the middle.
1 one thousand...2 one thousand...go!

Bowden might have admitted it, but Jimbo will be UMs worst nightmare! Can't wait for Saturday. As Mr. TomahawkNation says, it would be embarrassing if its not a FSU blowout.
Posted by: Memphisnole | October 19, 2012 at 12:22 PM
Memphis...Be careful, this game could be a lot closer than FSU expects. If Miami puts on a good show, finds a way to control the ball and score and keeps it close for the first half, and maybe leads at half or even wins the game, there will be much pain in Tally.
Just remember: FSU has everything to lose and Miami has everything to gain. That makes for interesting dynamics!

4 sounds about right, zilla. Memphisnole, welcome, assuming you're hear to talk football and not troll. It is refreshing to see a Nole fan who hasn't written off Jimbo yet, everyone on twitter seems to think he needs to go after that NC State debacle.

Mephisnole really Jimbo Fisher The U's worst nightmare??? that made me laugh.....

Defensively against FSU, you gotta pick your poison:
Do you play 8 or 9 in the box, and dare them to beat you with the pass?
Or do you try your luck, and try to stop their run game with 7 in the box?
But I know one thing, E.J. doesn't throw a very good deep ball, unless He improved on it since last season.
But it's gonna be a test that's for sure, looking forward to watching the game tomorrow night.

Rock...I say stack the line and bring the house. What do you have to lose. This slow death defense is killing me and taking possesions away from our offense.
