The NCAA recently conducted a study to determine what percentage of college athletes go on to become professional athletes in their sport of choice. The study also compared an athlete's relative success rate and transition from high school to college and then from college to professional sports.
The numbers, statistics and facts are simply stunning. They clearly show that every aspiring high school athlete who is basing their entire life plan and future on getting a scholarship to attend a major Division I university and then play professional sports better have a Plan B.
And maybe a plan C and even possibly a plan D also. Here is a quick glimpse of how many amature football players make it to the big time:
- There are around 1 million high school football players in the U.S.
- There are approximately 70,000 college football players.
- There are about 1,700 professional football players.
- Only about .0017% of high school football players will go pro.
And the same goes for any of the many 150,000 college athletes who hope to see their name in lights and with dreams of going pro and the big paychecks just rolling in year after year also better think again and have a backup plan. Even they are not assured of anything.
Here are some of the findings from the September 2012 research study:
Men's Basketball
- Approximately one in 30, or approximately 3.3 percent, of high school senior boys playing interscholastic basketball will go on to play men's basketball at a NCAA member institution.
- About one in 75, or approximately 1.3 percent, of NCAA male senior basketball players will get drafted by a National Basketball Association (NBA) team.
- Three in 10,000, or approximately 0.03 percent of high school senior boys playing interscholastic basketball will eventually be drafted by an NBA team.
Football
- About 6.4 percent, or approximately one in 16, of all high school senior boys playing interscholastic football will go on to play football at a NCAA member institution.
- Less than two in 100, or 1.6 percent, of NCAA senior football players will get drafted by a National Football League (NFL) team.
- Less than eight in 10,000 of high school senior boys playing interscholastic football will eventually be drafted by an NFL team.
Baseball
- About five in 75, or about 6.7 percent, of high school senior boys interscholastic baseball players will go on to play men's baseball at a NCAA member institution.
- About ten in 100, or about 9.7 percent, of NCAA senior male baseball players will get drafted by a Major League Baseball (MLB) team.
- Approximately one in 200, or about 0.51 percent of high school senior boys playing interscholastic baseball will eventually be drafted by an MLB team.
Ice Hockey
- Approximately 11 in 100, or about 10.9 percent, of high school senior boys interscholastic ice hockey players will go on to play men's ice hockey at a NCAA member institution.
- One in 75, or about 1.2 percent, of NCAA senior male ice hockey players will get drafted by a National Hockey League (NHL) team.
- About one in 1,000, or approximately 0.10 percent of high school senior boys playing interscholastic ice hockey will eventually be drafted by an NHL team.
Men's Soccer
- Less than three in 50, or about 5.6 percent, of high school senior boys interscholastic soccer players will go on to play men's soccer at a NCAA member institution.
- Approximately seven in 1,000, or about 0.7 percent, of NCAA senior male soccer players will be drafted by a Major League Soccer (MLS) team.
- More than two in 7,500 or approximately 0.03 percent of high school senior boys playing interscholastic soccer will eventually be drafted by an MLS team.

The University of Miami baseball team is set to host the Wounded Warriors Amputee Softball Team for a 7 p.m. exhibition contest Saturday, December 8 at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field.
The mission of the WWAST, comprised of young veterans and active duty soldiers who have lost limbs while serving their country in the military, is to raise awareness, through exhibition and celebrity softball games, of the sacrifices and resilience of military personnel, and highlight their ability to rise above any challenge.
The WWAST is comprised of young, competitive, athletic veterans and active duty soldiers who have lost limbs post-9/11, while serving their country in the military. The team includes individuals with a variety of amputations. Some are still in the service, others are attending college, and some have moved on to new careers.
Pregame festivities to the game will begin at 6:30 p.m. All proceeds from the game, including $10 general admission tickets available at the gate, will go to the Wounded Warriors.

All of U DENO haters just remember this:
When this defense starts to play better and win games on their own next year U will not have ANY voice here on da blog. U will be shamed and humiliated and have to eat RAW crow BIG time.
And WillieWill, OhioCane and I will LOL at your faithless, worthless and sorry azzes. YEAH I SAID IT!
Posted by: SOUP | November 28, 2012 at 06:52 PM
I love seeing these stats... As a high school coach, I think most parents believe about 50% of all high school athletes are getting full ride athletic scholarships! LOL
Ahh reality... such a b!tch sometimes...
The average kid, (and parent), just don't get how "special" most of these top flight athletes really are... (Warren Sapp was said to be able to dunk a basketball.)
Posted by: roachcane77 | November 28, 2012 at 06:53 PM
If our D starts "pulling it all together," it will be IN SPITE of D'No... NOT BECAUSE of him.
We COULD be so much further ahead of the game NOW if we had a halfway decent D Coordinator.
Yeah... we'll get better on D... could we REALLY get any worse?
If you D'No lovers want to jump on his sorry arse band wagon... who amongst you is willing to bet we'll be in the top 10 in ANY defensive category next year?
We'll get better... but we'll still be MEDIOCRE... vault it. Maybe top 50... maybe top 40? WooHoo!
D'No is in WAY ABOVE his pay grade... there are probably 40 or 50 D coordinators with better results and resumes who would JUMP at the chance to work at The U with our "young" athletes that D'No blames for keeping us at the bottom of the NCAA Defensive stats...
Posted by: roachcane77 | November 28, 2012 at 07:17 PM
I think we will win at least one more game and maybe two next year only because we will have all players a year older into the system and a senior qb.
The defensive players will play faster and stronger and be able to make up for a little of dnos cluster*$5# on their speed alone. We will suck on D compared to real Cane teams but will look 50% better than the circus out there lately.
Go Canes beat Mich State! ESPN 7:30

roach,
Its sad but I really think that's what we are in for til we get an AD and president that take the football team seriously.
Deserve Victory is looking a lot like Custer explaining to his men how they can't lose.

Posted by: laquinton | November 28, 2012 at 07:57 PM
I feel what you're saying Solar...
Too many people are willing to shoot for a really low target, and when they hit it, feel like they accomplished greatness...
Where are the high standards we USED to have? I guess I'm just too old and "Living in the Past" as many here want to constantly accuse "true" Cane fans of doing. (Yeah, I'm old enough to get the Jethro Tull reference too.) LOL
I like Golden, and I like "U Tough." What I DON'T like are excuses, and "settling for" and even celebrating bottom tier stats that show minor improvements.

It would literally require D'No calling plays blind to turn in a worse result next year, or this just completed one for that matter, so yeah, SOUP is not impressing me with his 'limb climbing' prediction next year. Plus Frank Broyles will personally take that award away from D'No if by some stolen election he does end up getting his hands on it next year when they climb to the middle of the pack statistically so as not to taint his legacy with the strain of failure that is the mutant from Philly's coaching. Double digit win regular season next year with a win over UF or else it's going to get ugly(er) around here!

Ok....TWO THINGS.....
First, the NFL didn't suspend Suh because they couldn't tell or know if the kick was intentional...so if you dont know, how the heck can you fine him??? All about the money!!
Second...about our D...I am HOPING that our youth will grow and it will help, BUT, those mature players still have to be in the right system and/or place of the field. Howard made grow into a great DB, but we will never know if D'No keeps lining him up 7 yards of the ball AND having him back pedal another 5 yards before the ball is snapped. I got to be honest, I think D'No is in over his head. The talent we got barely kept us from being dead last in D. Im not a defensive guru by any means, but common sense would tell you if it is 3rd and 5, dont line your db's 7 or 8 yards back, idk how many times I saw that and just wanted to throw my remote through the dam tv! lol And rather than mix it up to add pressure he just brought EJ44 up to the line a lot, and occasionally blized Bush...thats it...no other blitzing or mixing it up. I honestly don't see it getting better, even with the kids maturing, unless Golden puts his hands on the D and makes changes.

Holy crap! The BUC actually sounds like a real home-field advantage when the crowd actually shows up and decides to cheer! Like the basketball team this year, they have a lot of useful pieces that you can do some damage with even if big Reg is still playing in molasses sometimes.
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | November 28, 2012 at 08:38 PM
Expectations should be to at least match what the canes did in 2009. Roster composition for the 2013 team is similar to that squad...a team of mostly sophomores and some juniors. On the plus side we'll have a senior qb vs an oft-injured Harris.

& When or if Garrius Adams comes back from injury, the hoops team will be even deeper. Now the loss to Florida Gulf Coast looks like a fluke. I just hope they don't let it go to their head & slip up before conference play. They have a chance to win the ACC...
Posted by: CoCane | November 28, 2012 at 10:35 PM
Finallya big win for the basketball team. It does help with the stench of hte loss to FGCU and St. Leos (I know the St. Leos game didn't count, but still). Now hopefully they can follow it up with a nice run. One thing that concerns me is that they live by the three and die by the three, we were hitting our shots tonight but as we've already seen that isn't something you can count on every night. Hope to see them take advantage of our bigs down the road.
Posted by: j.w. | November 28, 2012 at 10:38 PM
Wasn't Durand Scott out for the Gulf Coast loss? That's the key to this team this year. I like the three man rotation they can use in the front-court, each of those guys has complementary skills to each other, Kenny can kind of face up to the rim, Reggie is just a long night in the making for whoever draws that assignment on the block, Grimble kind of has the poor man skill set of both Kenny or Reggie depending on who he's going to spell. Larkin can get his own shot and fill the basket in bunches or run the offense efficiently, Durand can stretch the floor and hurt you off the dribble, Trey's got good size and deep range which means he's a great compliment to the other four guys. It's a legit five man offensive team with the starters and Jim is getting them to play intelligent defense with a little zone thrown in here and there. Well constructed basketball team all around IMO, real pick your poison type of dilemma for the opposition every night.
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | November 28, 2012 at 10:47 PM
OGV,
With youngsters like Jekiri & Daniels, as they gain experience they can be solid contributers later in the season. I don't know whats been going on with Rion Brown but he looks like he has regressed. If they can get him going, they'll really be deadly. Coming off of the Bench with Gamble, Jekiri, Brown, Daniels, a healthy Garrius Adams & this team could make a deep run in March. Lets see how they respond to this big win...
Posted by: CoCane | November 28, 2012 at 10:56 PM
Pile of garbage excuses. I said we were going to go 8-4, and 9-4 with a bowl win. I never ever expected our defense to be worst than any year Golden was at Temple. Golden beating his chest about exceeding wins....he listening to the wrong people, not many cane fans thought we were gonna be that bad, we were out defending the team against reporters who were saying that. He needs to address the defense by its self. It was no ones choice to run an up tempo offense, It was no one's choice for him to leave Temple. Im sure they will take him back if D'No is mad about the roster. Stop with the excuses.
Posted by: jiggafras | November 28, 2012 at 06:16 PM

I see that smiley j.w., but Scott's a senior while Duke is a freshman, a fabulous one, but still a freshman nonetheless. Besides, you don't hear Jim not shutting up about the NCAA investigation hanging over his guys heads' and they're the ones in more serious sh!t when you examine little closeted Nevin's allegations, so if Al's going to keep talking about it as a problem preventing him from winning as much as he should you can expect the same thing, if not more, for the actual accomplished revenue sport coach on campus.

The offense won the GT, NC State, BC & Duke games. The defense didn't win any game by itself.
The only way the defense becomes championship caliber is if Golden & No'D make drastic changes to their philosophy & scheme. Golden is being loyal to a fault. Jethro Franklin is a terrible d-line coach & needs to be replaced yesterday. He's keeping him for what??? So Kevin Patrick can go to another team & produce beasts while our d-line still has no pass rush moves after 3 years under his schooling. ReDICKulous. I pray that Franklin switches out & leaves in the off season...

Well if Goldie goes to TN so be it. For all this "he is an upgrade over Shannon"--Nope. Shannon didn't field the worse Cane defense anyone has ever seen. He is no better than an average coach at best. His ceiling was Temple simple as that. The media is great at making guys better than they are. If he does go to UT, my man Franklin(if he stays) at Vandy will kick his a$$. Not saying that because I'm an Alum--Franklin has those kids ready to run thru a wall for him and the university building facilities. The guy was ready to run a program. Goldie is just a poser nothing more and him leaving would give me cause for a nice Cuban and a glass of Macallan 15..Bama

^^ "**Interestingly enough, Alex Collins was at the 'Canes basketball game, as the team got a big win over Michigan State. Collins was in a section with Deon Bush, Tracy Howard, Rayshawn Jenkins, Earl Moore, and most importantly Al Golden and Duke Johnson. Duke was sitting next to Collins almost the entire game, so it's good to see the two of them interacting. I also saw Golden talk to Collins for a while. This is a very important turn of events for Miami."

If you've heard Golden at any time in the past two years, it's obvious that he stays.
"Canes seem to be backing off Derrick Green already. Possibly getting good vibes from Alex Collins."
Take them both! Clements is a senior next year.

We've already got the Triple-D for 3 years.
Duke, Dallas, and Danny Dillard

Willie,
To answer your question from the previous blog, I'd say 3 out of 5, 3 stars play average.Look at our defensive players who are 3 stars and have been here for a while and you tell me:
Cornelius, Rogers, Highsmith, Cain, Gaines, Porter, Robinson. All average at best or 3*.
Goldie isn't going anywhere. Now they will probably throw 2.5 to 3 mill. at him but they too are on probation, not bowl banned but some ship losses and recruiting visits. Tenn. is not a fertile recruiting ground and he would have to rebuild them. The only pluses: bigger stadium with a great and loyal following, better facilities, more loot to pass out and they play in the SEC. I just can't see him leaving what he has built in 2 years and leave for more rebuilding. We are on the verge. The "U" needs to get him up to at least 2 mill.
Soup, I'm with you on DENO. I'm not bashing the dude, except to say, I think we should play more bump and run. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, and unless we get a couple JUCCOs to come in and help expect a little more of the same but not as bad. We need some linemen. The offense is set and if can learn to run block better, we should average 40 pts or more a game.

I'm greedy like that.

For those wondering, Artie Burns and Jermaine Grace were at the UM game last night also.

Duke will not be a senior at Miami.
Start stockpiling now because he's gone after '14.

Here in Vol. central -- local tv show about "vol coaching search" So far mostly about Gruden and Strong. Seems like local callers are not
sold on strong. (Race seems to be a possible issue) It also seems that the
Vols. believe they can get whoever they want. Local headline "If the vols
take jimbo is it a step backwards" The show is now in its second hour no
mention of Golden yet. His picture has been on the screen with a dozen other coaches. Second part of the show dealing with petrino and Franklin
also some talk about tubberville. That's it for now

OGV...You predicted 4 wins and CEO wanted to bet you and you wouldn't do it, true or false???
Posted by: Willie Will in Nashville | November 28, 2012 at 02:37 PM
THAT IS TRUE.
I woulda punked his azz too!

Not true, what I said was that the way the coaching staff performed their first year, two wins on the season was in play unless Jedd and his crew hit the ground running their second year. Watching that abomination that just wrapped up, I'm inclined to believe I had it figured right.
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | November 28, 2012 at 05:21 PM
(buzzer sound) Wrong. The correct answer is VERY TRUE. I told you several times to bet him and you wouldn't

Wow.
Every time Al Golden goes on with Sid, it blows my mind how informative and insightful things get. It puts the defense in a really interesting perspective, and I'll shut up now.
Al answers all the tough questions, and addresses the nonsense of the 2011 early NFL entrants.
I'd love for Sid to do Hurricane Hotline. Radio platinum.

You do realize that the three years prior to Golden taking the Temple gig that they only won 3 games TOTAL in 3 years before he got there right????? That's 1 win a year average

Willie, your memory is going, must be the late nights with the new 'Canes you're razing. So I went back and found this quote you can look up for verification on this blog:
"86, first of all, I expect them to win the national title every year or else it's a disappointing season. Now I foresee a disappointing season in store for 2012 and when it's all said and done, 6-6. 2-10 is in play though and that worries me because that would imply to me . . . a failure in leadership. Yes I typed it!
Toggle Commented Aug 26, 2012 on Five Questions With Canespace: Susan Miller-Degnan at Canespace"
Now I'm telling you that if UM doesn't make a legit challenge for a national title and at least play in BCS bowl as an automatic berth, time for some major staff shakeups. So all you D'No lovers out there, get ready for a new coach because that mutant isn't going to be around much longer with his Al Golden approved atrocity of a scheme.

Herb, i pretty much agree with your post but i think it depends on different coaches 3* players. Golden's 3* players are different than Shannon's. Just like i'm pretty sure you would take Sabin's 3* players right?
Posted by: Willie Will in Nashville | November 29, 2012 at 01:42 PM
Or raising even, but the bone dry glass he's drinking from was funny. Well played good sir. The LOOK WHAT THEY DID AT TEMPLE post before it was the height of poor form though.
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | November 29, 2012 at 01:42 PM
OGV,
Lol, about razing canes at night. But you did say that in another post.
I still don't get your whole knock on AG just cuz he came from temple. Its like you're saying he had a hell of a team at temple and they played against weaker teams???
Posted by: Willie Will in Nashville | November 29, 2012 at 01:50 PM
The offense won the GT, NC State, BC & Duke games. The defense didn't win any game by itself.
Posted by: CoCane | November 29, 2012 at 08:40 AM
Thats true but the offense lost two games too, unc and virginia.
UNC: Offense ONLY SCORED 14pts for the game, is that enuf??? Only needed to score two td's or one td and two fg's the second half and we win. They had 3 chances to win beginning wit 1:51 left in the 3rd qtr to win the game. But its on the defense????
Virgina: True the offense scored 40pts and thats good, but if D wade, Bosh, and Chalmers is out Lebron needs to score about 50pts to win. This game was a must win for the offense, the defense was out before the game started. All the offense needed to do was at least get another fg, and had two opportunities, lets take a look at what happened on their last two possessions. First possession, 3 plays for 2 yards, punt. Last possession, 3 plays for 6 yards, punt. Didn't the offense get the ball back with MOMENTUM and a 5pt lead with 4:19 left to play and had the ball twice with 5:33 left in the game? What about the Morris fumble that would have lead to a score??
