NEVER MIND I'LL DO IT FOR U:

I've read the previous comments about D'Onofrio. I stand behind my statements in saying that he needs to go. Here's a little update on his career:

1. At Temple, he had only one decent performance against a major FBS team (Penn State, 22-13) which they lost.

2. In 2011, his UM defense had one solid performance against a good team (Ga. Tech).

3. His 2012 resume is horrendous.

a. The defense gave up 30.42 points per game.
b. The defense held only one opponent to single digits this year (USF).
c. The notable defensive performance came against a 6 loss Virginia Tech team.
d. His defense gave up 30 points 8 times (2/3 of the schedule).
e. His defense gave up 40 points 4 times (1/3 of the schedule).
f. The defense cost this team at least two losses against conference opponents in competitive matchups (North Carolina, Virginia) and cost UM a 9 win season.
g. 49th in turnovers gained.
h. 79th in 3rd down conversion defense.
i. 118th in first downs.
j. 114th in sacks.
k. 105th in tackles for loss.
l. The oft-touted stat of red zone defense? 90th.
m. 100th in passing defense.
n. 113th in rushing defense.
o. 116th in total defense.
p. 82nd in scoring defense.

With the exception of WVU, there is no defense that consistently underperforms like UM.

It's a given that Deon Bush, Tracy Howard, Denzel Perryman, Thomas Finnie, Eddie Johnson (if he's still around), Gionni Paul, Raphael Kirby, Anthony Chickillo, and Tyriq McCord are uniquely talented and extremely good players. But good players can suffer under a bad defensive coordinator.

This is not an overreaction. If D'Onofrio had something to base his resume on, then I'd give him another year.

But he does not deserve it. I could see it if there was a decent performance against a top 25 team in his career, but there isn't one. Not one.

D'Onofrio holds this team back. He should be fired, but won't...

...and it's a shame.

Sinistercane

Lose to UF next year and that seat will be volcanic hot

Sinistercane

Regardless of sanctions, in year 3 better be some improvement cross the board

LB

I have no doubt of improvement. There's too much talent there not to improve, and a returning offensive line and quarterback won't hurt.

Oh yeah, and 2,000 all-purpose yards of Duke Johnson come back.

D'Onofrio should be fired. See above.

CoCane

This is why I don't trust Golden as a coach. If he ain't got the nutz to get rid of the weakest links (No'D & Jethro). He's not the man to bring the "U" back to champ status. Even though No'D is his best friend, Golden is on a cut throat level of football. So he has to bring that mentallity to the table. If he's really No'D best friend then he would show him tough love & ax his azz. That's the only way No'D will wake up, make the neccessary changes in his scheme & philosophy. If No'D is really Golden's friend he won't take it personal & realize it's for his own good & personal growth. He'll thank for the opportunity & proceed to take the steps of going to another level by learning from his mistakes. Both of these dudes are holding each other back by being too nice.

It's ugly times ugly. When the goings get tough, the tough get going. Don't whine when it hurts. No one likes a cry baby. Something like that. Lol! I'm trying to quote Gordon Gecco from Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. Whoever knows this line get it right for me please...

Yall get the idea though

WHATS WORSE KEEPING D'NO OR STARTING ALL OVER AGAIN WITH A NEW DCOR.?

dg

I've just stopped paying attention. As long as that guy is still the D coordinator,no reason too. I really hope Golden does decide to leave. He has allowed the d to get embarrassed week after week. He doesn't deserve to be a HC--no excuse for any Miami D to ever be ranked 100+ in any category. Plus his BS about not knowing what was going on with NCAA before he arrived. The damn bloggers knew and everyone else in CFB but "Mr. I'm a program builder" didn't know. Come on, you can't trust a guy like that. More importantly, if your kid is a defensive stud, would you want him to play for Miami's coordinator? I damn sure wouldn't..go sale your BS in Rocky Top!

86Cane

dg...just go to the UM football banquet and tell him how U really feel! LOL

That's like asking what's worse, having a root canal or an ingrown toenail? Both are bad.

Ohio_Cane

Golden expects 6-7 more commits on top of the 8-9 we have now. 15-16 total, which is factoring in possible future sanctions.

Ohio_Cane

Listen, and listen closely.

Golden on Joe Rose: http://wqam.com/dj/joe-rose

Willie Will in Nashville

I will say this.

The D improved every game that EJ played in since the NC State game till the South Florida game. The offense cost us the notre dame, unc, fsu, and Virginia games. The defense cost us the ksu game and almost the Duke game. Last year the defense lost a lot of games.

I say again I'm NOT a D'no fan, I'm in the middle, I'm not on either side. If we get rid of D'no fine, if we keep him its fine with me if its fine with AG. If he's willing to put his job on the line for it he must know something that we don't. I trust Golden and he knows way more than we do what he needs to do to get us back to the top.

REPETITION

HERE IS WHAT HAPPENS TO AN IDEA WITHOUT REPETITION. GIVE IT TO 100 PEOPLE. AFTER 24 HOURS, 25 HAVE FORGOTTEN IT. AFTER 48 HOURS, 50 HAVE FORGOTTEN IT. AFTER FOUR DAYS, 85 HAVE FORGOTTEN IT. AFTER 16 DAYS, 98 HAVE FORGOTTEN IT. IN SHORT, SIXTY TWO PERCENT OF ALL IDEAS ARE ACCEPTED ONLY AFTER THEY ARE PRESENTED, PRESENTED, PRESENTED, PRESENTED, PRESENTED, AND PRESENTED THE SIXTH TIME! TELEVISION ADVERTISERS TELL US THAT THE AVERAGE PERSON GOES OUT AND BUYS A PRODUCT AFTER HE HAS SEEN A COMMERCIAL NINETEEN TIMES.

HOW DOES THIS APPLY TO FOOTBALL IN GENERAL AND AN ATHLETE IN PARTICULAR? FOOTBALL IS A GAME OF TIMING AND INSTINCT. WHEN A BOY HAS TO THINK WHAT TO DO IN A SITUATION HE IS NOT READY. BUT WHEN HE HAS REPEATED AN ASSIGNMENT UNTIL HIS RESPONSE IS INSTINCTIVE AND SPONTANEOUS, THAT BOY IS READY. THE SAME THING THAT IS TRUE FOR ON THE FIELD ASSIGNMENTS IS ALSO TRUE FOR ATTITUDE. A POSITIVE MENTAL ATTITUDE MUST BE CULTIVATED AND DEVELOPED UNTIL IT BECOMES THE FOUNDATION, NOT THE SUPERSTRUCTURE, FOR SUCCESS.

LB

There have to be replacements out there. We're not going to get Ray Lewis or a high-powered name, but it would be nice to get someone with some UM ties as a coordinator.

I can't get Golden's interview with "The Tool" to come up, Ohio. What did you read between the lines?

LB

Nevermind, I got it to load. I'll give a listen.

Sinistercane

Ohio What did Al say this morning? Can't play wqam inthe office :(

Canerock,

UMike

Even RS had enough sense to cut his buddy Walton after one year lol

Ohio_Cane

Not so much reading between the lines as stating the obvious.

He's not firing D'No. Stated he's the reason there were shootouts. His defensive plan led to that because of youth on D.

The scholarships he'll give out this year are reduced with the NCAA sanctions in mind.

Was merely stating listen closely so everyone actually would, and would realize he won't be making any coaching changes unless he's forced to.

Posted by: Willie Will in Nashville | November 26, 2012 at 01:21 PM

There IT is right there.

Golden knows that he is putting his own job on the line with every coaching, recruiting and current player decision he makes.

It is nothing less than that.

LB

I listened.

Golden challenged the listeners to look at D'Onofrio's resume. I have. The more you look at it, the worse it gets.

He mentioned lack of a pass rush...

Golden also mentioned that high-tempo offense had a lot to do with it, to outscore the opponent. Wins matter. D'Onofrio's defense also cost UM at least 2 wins vs. conference opponents.

What really stands out to me about D'Onofrio is his ceiling, and it looks pretty freaking low. If we have the right guys in the wrong system...

Unfortunately, D'Onofrio is going nowhere. We're stuck with him, maybe for a couple of years.

Even if the defense suddenly turns around next year and the CEO's prediction (please pass what you're smoking around) comes true, what's the ceiling? 40th?

The only way it seems we're going to get anywhere on defense is to have Bush/Howard at every position. That's hard to do.

I'm going to tone down the negative talk very soon, but this needs to be addressed.

Maybe we can have a D'Onofrio article, the true believers vs. the realists. Take the craziest person from each side out of the equation and let's have a real discussion.

CoCane

The Golden interview with Joe Rose sounds like there will be changes or tweaks within the scheme of the defense. It wasn't said strait up but Golden hinted at it. The only thing we can do as fans is wait & see. It's obvious No'D is staying but Jethro needs to go. You can't have the lowest ranked defense out of all the BCS conferences & no one on the staff doesn't get fired. That would be IN FUKKIN SANE...

I really do believe that some changes will be made as far as the defensive philosophy, scheme & aggression. I'll stay tuned...

86Cane

Ohio...I agree with U here. I think most fans know that it is HIGHLY unlikely if not completely out of the question that Golden would fire D'Onofrio. Mainly because as many here have stated it is Golden's defense they are running so the two are one in the same.

The way I see it next year we MUST see significant improvement and no less than 9-3 and the year after that a BCS bowl game and National title opportunities. I think it can happen, and most likely will happen but only time will tell.

dg

86, They would convict me of treason if I went the football banquet :-) It is a crying shame what has happened to the program. How in the hell can any d'Coordinator come in and not do better than that guy? Already at the bottom---"Hello Kitty can do better." Get Luke on the phone--he'd be a 1000% improvement on a part-time basis.

you guys are like a broken record that repeats itself continuously, except the music is bad. the worst thing about cane football is its fans. and no, not because we don't go to home games, because you all still think we are in the 90s when the mantra is 'we reload not rebuild; an era when 10-2 was an unacceptable season.
well sorry to disappoint you relics, 'things don change.' you ask what changed: for starters, we thought the rest of the nation how to play football; they got smart and started raiding our top rated florida recruits; coaching improved; strength & conditioning improved; facilities improved. because of all these factors, 'any given Sunday' has become 'any given Saturday.' the room for error in a college football game has become too small for a mouse to fit in because of these reasons. a college team really needs all facets to be clicking for the team to go all the way and that includes familiarity with and execution of the scheme put in place by the coaching staff. and you certainly will not achieve that with a carousel of coaching. and what makes you all think any descent coach would want to come here the way we call for their heads after every mistake. Shannon should have had more time.
at the start of the season, you all (I didn't) predicted doom and gloom for this season because we are really young. funny how 7-5 is now cause for 'execution.' if you think the record is fine because of where we are, then you have to know that us not having a better record was bound to be the result of a break down in one of the three facets. in this case, it happens to be Defense....deal with it. get a life. support your team and coaches. look to the future...

86Cane

I am thinking that the D-line or DB coach we could do without and get an upgrade there?

NigerianCane

well said canerock.

dg

86, Is "Kitty" able to tell the corners not to play 10yds off the ball on 3&5 or move the LBs up to play closer to the line? Hire her right now :-)

LB

"at the start of the season, you all (I didn't) predicted doom and gloom for this season because we are really young."

Nope. I predicted 8 wins, and many 7 to 9.

No sane person thinks it's 2001. We haven't won a bowl game since 2006. However, I read every word and placed such into perspective until this sentence.

"Shannon should have had more time."

I'll let Sid respond: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMGkno6qJzY

"I am thinking that the D-line or DB coach we could do without and get an upgrade there?"

Tough call.

By the way, which school is the fourth out of conference opponent for 2013 (Florida, UAF, and USF being the 3)? Another ACC school?

CoCane

Anybody think that the CB's will be 10-20 off of their man next year? If we see that shyt again in the 1st game, we're fukked & next year will be a waste.

Changes that will let us know if Goldie & No'D learned from their whippins this year:

CB's playing man coverage at least 2/3 - 3/4 of the game.

CB's never lining up 10 yards off the line unless we're up by at least 20+ points in the 2nd half & the d-line is getting pressure with 3 & 4 man fronts.

DE's actually attempting pass rush moves.

DT's shooting the gap.

Jethro Franklin gets fired.

Kevin Patrick is coaching the d-line.

A better variety of blitzes if the d-line isn't getting consistant pressure.

The LB's are playing closer to line of scrimmage.

NO 10-20 YARD CUSHIONS ON 3 & LESS FIVE PLEEEEEEEASE!!!

herbieibis

Okay, now that we got our daily dose of bashing DENO out of the way, let's talk about needs and gets to help the man out on defense. I know we need to get Matt Thomas & Grace at LB, is there any others?
We have to keep Bryant BUT it looks doubtful, so with that being said plan B is who? I know we are hitting the JUCCO ranks and one of our top targets tore 2 ligs. in his knee, can't remember his name. Anybody we do bring in on the front wall has to be physically ready to play.

Ohio_Cane

Cardinal Newman 2014 WR Travis Rudolph's #Canes commitment said to be less than solid. Wants to see what happens to program.

At linebacker? Those two names sound good. There's a beast from Virginia (whose name has been previously mentioned) who could fill that shoe, too.

I think Bryant's situation is a touch overblown. I think he comes. Where else is he going to play? FSU? Much like Collins, he'll be bogged down in his position unless major injury strikes if he goes anywhere else.

At UM, he can play Day 1... especially on the defensive line.

In fact, all the positions on the defense are up for grabs save a couple. Howard, Bush, Perryman, E. Johnson (assuming things iron out) are the only ones I can think of who should lock down their positions due to competition.

Come to Miami. Join the 2012 class, join in dominating a conference just begging for a BCS-bowl winner, get a top 40 education, play now, go to the NFL.

Pretty simple.

LB

"Cardinal Newman 2014 WR Travis Rudolph's #Canes commitment said to be less than solid. Wants to see what happens to program."

Recruits who commit early (junior season) usually waiver. Duke Johnson is the exception.

Howard and Bush waited, signed, worked, and produced.

I love when people say I trust in coach "__________" because they know more than we do, Only to be fired down the road

longtimecanefan

Seems AG will stick with No'D for another season at this point (or at least it appears that way).

If he does, for sure AG knows that another year like this with the worst D in Div 1 and they'll both be looking for new jobs.....

I sure hope he's right...otherwise we're starting over again come 2014

mi@mic@ne

I heard the Golden interview. I got the impression that he decided to play for points early on. I find it hard to believe. It makes me think that hes protecting his buddy but not blaming it on the offense. But he did mention that the offense needs to score late to win the game.

Its his rite to protect his buddy. But to ignore talking about the d problems because they have a rite of passage being so young and then to pin point some of the problems on the offense makes it obvious that he is intentionally trying to take the negative attention away from no d. THats fine rite now but if these problems continue next year that means hes taking chances that could affect his own reputation about the decisions he makes as the head coach. Given the history of this d philosophy and were we stand statistically now its a very small chance this thing gets turned around next year in order for us to win against top ten teams and some close acc games. I wouldnt get my hopes up. Just my humble opinion... hope he proves me wrong.

MDCane

My take from the Golden interview kind of blame the offense for scoring too quickly, thus not giving the defense time to rest which cause the breakdown...puzzling. Does he slow down Stephen and Duke next year IF/when the defense gets better? I kind of sympathize with him about guys new to the system with the exception of McGee. There was a lot of freshman playing and learning in the fly, but with spring and fall camp we should have no excuse about the defense.

Ohio_Cane

Baseball: Gino DiMare named program's recruiting coordinator: http://bit.ly/10ZRyAd

Ohio_Cane

Age will not be an appropriate excuse next season. There were 14 freshman and around 8-12 soph's that were baptized by fire. Should be old hat to them next year.

Add an offseason of UTough and I'm friggin pumped for next year.

3 losses MAX.

Al

You can put D'No on the the No.1 defense in the nation and he will make it No.100. Golden knows it. Everybody knows it. He has absolutely NO RECORD to show he is a good DC. None. Nada. Stop with the youth excuses. This will not get better. He should have been fired long time ago.

Al

If Golden does not fire D'No, he should be fired for being an imbecil. It is not fair for the team. Where is his "ACCOUNTABILITY" when it comes to coaching.

UMike

Aj..I agree..you cant preach accountability and not old your friend to it. The offense moving to fast bs an excuse..I don't see Oregon's d-coordinator complaining lol..normally Golden is straight forward with everything, EXCEPT this. I don't care if all 11 starters were freshman, their still talented enough to finish better than near last place. I am a HUGE Golden supporter, but by him finding every excuse in the book to not blame D-No, I am started to waiver on that support.

UMike

not hold your friend**

It's amazing to me that Duke was 39 yards from breaking Miami's all-time all purpose yards record by Willis. Wow.

Yup! Couldn't agree more.
And not saying that fooball is easy by any stretch, but since offense is mostly rote, it's easier for a talented freshman to make an impact on offense, as opposed to defense.
It's no accident that Duke,Lewis,Scott,Waters, etc., had an impact this season, because again, that's the nature of offense, that's the nature of the game.
