"As good as we were, we didn't win a national championship until 1993, mainly because we kept losing to Miami on missed kicks," Bowden said. "I used to get mad because nobody else would play Miami. Notre Dame would play them, then drop them. Florida dropped them. Penn State dropped them. We would play Miami and lose by one point on a missed field goal, and it would knock us out of the national championship.

And that's why as much as I don't like FSU I respect them. They didn't duck us like Floriduh, Notre Lame, etc. Played us every year even when we were not in a conference. My 2 most despised teams are Floriduh and Notre Lame hands down.

6-7 I would guess.

It's our last game with the Gators for a while. Even with a loss we lead head-to-head but it sure would be nice to ruin the Gators season early.

Agreed Terrance. I respect FSU for keeping us on their schedule and continuing to (attempt) to compete with us. Far better than the Notre Dames and Floridas of college football who ran screaming from any future dates at the Orange Bowl.
Posted by: TonyCane | December 29, 2012 at 04:57 PM
Presumably FSU could have won up to six additional national championships if they had not lost to Miami in the following years:
1987: 11-1 (sole loss to Miami)
1988: 11-1 (sole loss to Miami)
1990: 10-2 (lost to Miami & Auburn, might have achieved national championship game over a 1-loss Notre Dame against Colorado)
1991: 11-2 (beat Miami and most likely they do not suffer the hangover loss to Florida the following week)
1992: 11-1 (sole loss to Miami)
1994: 10-1-1 (sole loss to Miami, would have played Nebraska for title if they had won)

I grew up in Jax, and Gator fans were everywhere. When I was a kid, I rooted for them being the close major team and the Georgia rivalry and all but something held me back from going all in and becoming a Gators fan. I never really knew why until a few years later when I suddenly figured it out. Most Gator fans (there are always exceptions) but for the most part they seem to act like elitist snobs. I can't think of any better way to put it. There was always that whole air of looking down their noses at others and it always rubbed me the wrong way. Made me unable to be a Gators fan, even though I was surrounded by it. I would really really enjoy watching the Canes destroy the Gators' quest for an unbeaten season.

Barry Jackson:
### UM has done everything the NCAA has asked: self-imposing two bowls (actually, three postseason games if you include the ACC title game) and telling players they might be disassociated from the school if they don’t agree to be interviewed by investigators. So when does UM start to stand up for itself and fight back?
“When we get the notice of allegations, [UM outside counsel] Mike Glazier will have to be tough at that point,” a high-ranking UM official said. “You want to show cooperation up until the point you have the allegations. They can’t claim we weren’t cooperative. We’re trying to do everything possible to make sure the NCAA does not use the words ‘lack of institutional control.’”
Another UM official reminded that once the notice of allegations is mailed, control shifts from the NCAA’s enforcement division to the infractions committee, and UM then would challenge enforcement’s findings if there are any claims it disputes. Yes, UM wants to put this behind them, but it's customary to defend yourself before the infractions committee within 90 days or so after receiving your allegations.
“The question,” the UM official said, “is how far does the NCAA want to go if they don’t have documentation to prove specific allegations?”
### What will UM say in its own defense?
Glazier will craft UM’s strategy, in consultation with president Donna Shalala and UM’s on-staff lawyers. That won’t be determined until the allegations are sent.
But a UM official said there has been discussion internally about making this point in front of the infractions committee: “Nevin Shapiro was a rogue booster who wormed his way into the scene. He would just show up. For example, Donna didn’t know he would be at the bowling alley where that picture was taken.”
### When will UM gets the allegations?
School officials had thought they would come by December, but the process has been delayed by the enforcement committee's attempt to reach numerous former UM football players and further investigate Shapiro's allegations involving basketball.
UM hopes to get the allegations in January, but nobody has been told for sure.
Posted by: CaneRock | December 29, 2012 at 06:32 PM
I don't know what all the NCAA has gathered or tried to gather together, but if their main line of offense is a little incarcerated weasel who made a fortune out of lying and deceiving, and who has a chip on his shoulder, then that organization is more pathetic than I thought. If that's possible.

WW, if we were winning A La Alabama, and stared an uproar about leaving, and say, USC, OSU (Ohio State), Michigan, couple SEC schools... Then yes the NCAA would quiver. They don't have all the power, (not to sound cliche) but the power is in the People's hands. If enough schools line up against the NCAA things would change.

UM wins HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT
UM WOMEN 67 Wisconsin 44
Stefanie Yderstrom powers Miami Hurricanes past Badgers
By Christina De Nicola The Miami Herald
Canes senior guard Stefanie Yderstrom scored 18 points as UM won its third in a row by 20-plus.
With Saturday night’s 67-44 victory over Wisconsin UM won their third consecutive Holiday Tournament championship at the BankUnited Center.
We are a ton better than we were at the beginning of the year, UM coach Katie Meier said. I don’t think I’ve ever had a team that got so much better through November and December in all of my years of coaching this team. A lot of it is the seniors staying consistent and people popping up now that make us a heck of a ballclub that just weren’t ready early on.
For the third consecutive game, senior guard Stefanie Yderstrom led the Hurricanes (10-2) in scoring, collecting a game-high 18 points on 6-of-13 shooting (5 of 8 from three-point range).
It was about time, said Yderstrom, who was awarded tournament MVP.

His name is Sunny, he's very large, he's from Nigeria and he's a future Hurricane
The Hurricanes are full of players with cool stories.
As of February, it appears we'll add one more to the stockpile.
Nigerian native Sunny Odogwu, 6-8 and listed by various websites as anywhere from 300 to 315 pounds, told recruiting services on Friday that he has committed to coach Al Golden and the University of Miami.
An offensive tackle, Odogwu played last season at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va. He arrived in the United States when he was 16, and first played basketball at Huntington Prep in West Virginia.
Odogwu told CaneSport, which first reported his commitment, that he expects to arrive on campus in January to be there in time for spring practice.
"His willingness to want to learn is without comparison, St. Frances Academy (Maryland) football coach Messay Hailemariam told the Clarion-Ledger. "I've never seen anything like it. I've never seen the hunger I've seen in him. When you look at him he absolutely passes the eye test, but his desire to work actually exceeds that.''
If he ends up excelling at tackle, what a coup for the Hurricanes. But he's obviously raw. His story sounds amazing.
After transferring from Huntington Prep to Baltimore St. Frances, he played football for the first time there as a senior.
"I came to Maryland and began playing football because people said I was too aggressive for basketball,'' Odogwu told CaneSport. "I love football. You can hit and nobody will call fouls, so it's awesome.''
According to CaneSport, Odogwu grew up in Africa "sharing a 12x12 room with 10 family members. With one bed pushed up against a wall for his parents, there was no room for him to sleep inside. So he'd take a wooden mat, lay it outside the front door and go to sleep.''
Looking forward to the big guy's arrival, and our first interview.

Gino Smith ended his career with little noise last night. He has a lot ofr talent, but he needs to mature and get some self control. Things do not always go our way. Dont I know!!!! He has a lot of ability, and I think he will get picked in the draft. I hope he matures and grows and will develop into a good pro. We will see.

Miami is bending over backwards to show the NCAA that we are going to clean this up and make sure it never happens again. If the NCAA hits us hard regardless after all that the school has done while the investigation drags on, then oh boy. Oregon is under investigation too right? Have they been doing anything similar to Miami? Last time I checked, they are still having their weekly latest football fashion show on Tuesday followed by a football game on Saturday.

Jags need Tebow! Off topic Sun Life needs to put on a DOME!
Posted by: Jack | December 30, 2012 at 04:44 PM
LMFAO at Tebow to Jags.
Tebow is not an NFL QB. When the only offense you can run is a run/read option, NFL teams will be ready to destroy you on a weekly basis. Tebow takes forever to throw, is dumb as dirt (700 SAT), cannot read NFL defenses, and has a glacially slow throwing motion. The NFL now has enough film on Tebiw and knows he can only run a dumbed down read option offense.
Tebow to Jags, means Jags to LA, as they are guaranteed a losing record as long as he is the starting QB. Say bye bye to Jags in Jax. Tebow is not an NFL quarterback.
Posted by: CaneTemps | December 30, 2012 at 05:09 PM

Sun Sentinel

CORAL GABLES Miami's hot and cold basketball season hit another valley Sunday evening.
Starting senior center Reggie Johnson will miss six weeks with a broken thumb, CBSSports.com reported. That would leaving him out of action for the meat of the ACC season with a possible return somewhere around the Feb. 13 trip to Florida State.
Miami (8-3) lost two of the last three games played without Johnson. The injury occurred in practice before the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu.
The Hurricanes won the opener against Hawaii (73-58) before falling to No. 4 Arizona 69-50 and Indiana State 57-55 in overtime.
Johnson, who played in seven and started six of the 11 games, averaged a double-double. His 12.6 points ranked third on the team and the 10.1 rebounds paced the Hurricanes.
The UM medical staff were sleeping on the switch. They found out it was a broken thumb more than a week after the injury occured.

Tebow won a playoff game against the Steerlers and there aren't many QB's to do that. That dude just wins. I would take him over "Tannebust". I still cat believe we took him! Fins should have taken RUSSELL WILSON!

Jack once tannehill gets himself a real go to wr he will be good... Dont judge him against my boys and the best qb to ever do it Tommy boy.
Posted by: UpNorthCane | December 30, 2012 at 07:00 PM
Ok Skip, take off the #15 jersey and your blue and orange glasses and learn a little football. Tebow was a one season fluke luckily winning against a depleted Steelers defense, in Denver, with a ten yard throw and 70 yard receiver run. After sucking big time the latter part of the regular season, losing his last regular season game, and waiting for another team to lose, to back into the playoffs.
The book is out on the this borderline mental retard who can't read an NFL defense to save his life. Simple coverage disguises send him running to mama. Why do you think he couldn't beat out Sanchez, probably the worst QB in the NFL. Is Rex Ryan that anxious to lose his job that he wouldn't put him in if he thought he could win?
Tebow won a few games at Denver for three reasons. Willis McGahee, OC installed dumbed down non-NFL offense so that Tebow could keep up, and the teams that lost to Denver didn't effectively prepare due to lack of sufficient info. and film. But now the book is out.
But don't worry, looks like Jags will install the pre-school offense so Tebow can run it. I'm getting my popcorn, it'll be fun to watch Tebow make a mockery of the NFL QB position, and when the Jags move to LA, your boy will be signing with the the Arena League Dubuque Mud Hens and you can cheer him on there.
Enjoy

CaneTemps...please tell us how U really feel? LOL
Look I agree with most of what you say and I understand that Tebow's play leaves A LOT to be desired but the amount of pure hatred for Tebow out there in general is amazing. I have NO love for the Gatas or for Tebow for that matter but I think the guy has gotten a raw deal in the NFL and in NY in particular.
Had Tebow gone to the Jags to begin with before his pro image was tarnished they would have sold out every game. And IF the Jags had an offense built for him and around him he would have had three good years of over .500 football and maybe something even better.

Posted by: roachcane77 | December 30, 2012 at 07:40 PM
I agree with everything you said except the 3 good years and .500 ball.
Might go .500 for first 6 games but downhill after that. His dumbed down offense is too easy to defend especially after you have a book of his tendencies, and his throwing skills have regressed markedly. He's dropping his arm down worse than before and and on average adds .3 seconds to his throwing motion, making him susceptible to more sacks and ints. If not for Jax, his NFL career would be over and plenty of teams need QBs. Also he's one more concussion away from another ten point IQ drop, which he can't afford.
Can't read NFL defenses, can't throw, will take too many hits with his physical style, can't run a regular offense. People whose jobs depend on the QB won't touch him with the exception of Jax, which wants to sell tickets. If a team thought they could win with him they'd take him. Say what you want about the NFL, it's still about winning at he end of the day. But the people whose job depends on player evaluation, ie, NFL team coaches and evaluators, don't want him.
Don't take my word for it. Wait until next year and give him a full season at Jax. If I'm wrong and he even gets .500 next year I'll gladly eat crow.
Posted by: CaneTemps | December 30, 2012 at 07:43 PM
Tebow in Jacksonville is too short range. I want the new Gm to come in and start building for the future in the right way. Not some stop-n-stare circus that might be good for a couple of seasons if that. Hopefully the current office is smarter than that.

Hey look, I'm not Tebow's agent and I am not arguing for him to go to Jax or saying he will do well there or anywhere else.
I'm jus sayin that the Tebow "mystique" coming directly out of college would have worked in Jax (or Tampa for that matter) for about three years of pure fun and games.
Now his whole image and karma are trashed and he can't get it back barring some miraculous career resurrection (pun intended). It was probably gonna be a one time shot and that train has now already left the station.
I think he is toast but it was NOT all his fault and much of the criticism he gets is beyond the realm of normalcy. There are a LOT of very average to mediocre QBs in the NFL but none get the treatment that Tebow does. NONE, and that doesn't seem fair.
Posted by: 86Cane | December 30, 2012 at 08:29 PM
86Cane,
I agree with you that Tebow had "it factor" for awhile but this season with the Jets has totally derailed it. Jaguars need a savior (pun intended) and who better than Tebow? If Tebow actually gets them to the postseason in Jax, they'll be renaming the St. John's river St. Tebow. A part of me would like to see how Tebow would do in Jax, but I want to see the team think more long term. Tebow to Jax could actually hurt the Jags more in the long run. That's what I'm afraid will happen.
Posted by: KiriJax | December 30, 2012 at 08:55 PM
Old Skool agreement that's when I turned in my Dolphins fan card when they had a Florida Crocs celebration last year. The more they stink the better, the hell with the Fins.

Kiri...I'll make a UM analogy so maybe a few here can understand it better. Let's take a look at UM PR/KR, WR/DB Devin Hester.
I am going to over-simplify this for brevity but Hester had one skill set and the knock on him was that he couldn't learn the playbook which is why he saw little time at WR at UM and even less in his first few years as a pro. I call BS! Look I don't care what U do U HAVE to get the ball in his hands 10 times a game because he is a game changer.
In addition to his touches as a PR/KR U have to have five set plays for him as a WR: (H1) Go route; (H2) Stop-n-go; (H3) 20 yard comeback; (H4) Slant route; (H5) Out route.
Any person capable of breathing and exhaling can learn that especially with a designated coach spending extra time with him before, during and after practice. Who cares IF U have to dumb down anything IF U are going to win the damn game by scoring MORE points?
When he is in the game at WR U "dumb down" the offense and isolate him to one side with 2 WR to the other side. Five times a game U use him as a decoy but FIVE times a game U call H1, H2, H3, H4 or H5.
Those plays are designated for Hester to be the primary target. All the other players know their assignments and routes and protections but Hester only has to know what to do on FIVE plays (H1-H5).
Then in year two or three U add the flanker screen (H6) and the reverse (H7) once a game. Hester sez: "I got this."

randy Shannon to leave tcu for Arkansas.. but as the linebackers coach...
Posted by: laquinton | December 30, 2012 at 09:35 PM
Randy Shannon is leaving as TCU’s linebackers coach to take a similar position at Arkansas, the school announced on its official Twitter account Sunday.
Shannon was part of three national titles (1987, 1991, 2001) at Miami as a player and assistant coach. He compiled a 28-22 record as Miami’s head coach from 2007-10. Shannon was hired at TCU before the start of the 2012 season. He’ll now join the staff of new Razorbacks coach Bret Bielema.

OK, I am a little stunned by all the National media pundits saying that ARK hiring Shannon is GREAT for FL ties?
Really? At a FEW schools MAYBE, but not overall.

I'm jus sayin...
"Yah Sunny could go DT mode but he would need plenty of time to learn the position but if he was able to get it that boi would be straight greasy. They say 6'8 so we know that means a bit over 6'6 but he legit 300. That boi goin to be tellin us how he wrestled f n lions in order to eat lol. Yah, he the next Manimal inkin here."

SOUP, I always thought Hester should've been a TB. You remember that TD He scored against UNC off a toss sweep, it was a Saturday night game I think...

Rock...Hester was a BIG dude and thick even with his speed. Can U imagine him in a F/T Wildcat offense? Oh MY!

Great points 86, Canerock, good info Laquinton. The National pundits are clueless assclowns.
