Happy New Year everybody! Japan is 14 hours ahead of Miami time so I'll be in the new year a bit ahead. May 2013 be a GREAT year for Miami Hurricane sports!

Terrance Sullivan

It's all about the U! Happy New Year KiriJax.

Old Skool

expect a losing season
Big loss for the Canes basketball team, which announced Sunday night that center Reggie Johnson will miss six to eight weeks with a broken thumb -- an injury sustained at a practice in Hawaii last week. UM ends the regular season March 10 --- in 10 weeks.

HCs most expected to be fired today include Andy Reid, Pat Shurmur, Norv Turner, Romeo Crennel.

With Kyle Wright suffering a season-ending thumb injury, Kirby Freeman started the final four games of the 2006 season and led the Hurricanes to a 17-14 victory over Boston College in the regular season finale. The win made Miami bowl-eligible. In the 2006 MPC Computers Bowl, Freeman completed 11 of 19 passes for 272 yards and two touchdowns in Miami's 21-20 win over Nevada. Freeman also rushed for a touchdown en route to being named MVP of the game.

On August 28, 2007, Head Coach Randy Shannon named Freeman the starting quarterback over Kyle Wright for the season-opening game against Marshall.[1] Freeman, despite going 9-for-21 for 81 yards with one touchdown, one interception, and 20 yards rushing in his first start, drew praise from Shannon for "controlling" the game, a 31-3 Miami win.[2] The following week, Freeman struggled to complete only 3 of 10 passes for 17 yards and was replaced by Kyle Wright for part of the third quarter in a 51-13 loss to Oklahoma. In Freeman's two starts, Miami ranked 118th out of 119 major college schools in passing offense both in average yards per game and yards per attempt. On September 11, Shannon announced that Wright would reclaim his starting role for the September 15th game against FIU.[3]

On October 20, Freeman threw the go-ahead touchdown pass against Florida State. Against NC State the following week, Freeman went 1-for-14 with one touchdown and three interceptions.[4]

Freeman finished his final season with Miami by passing for 256 yards and throwing for 3 touchdowns. Freeman transferred to Baylor after the season, citing differences with head coach Randy Shannon.[5]

[edit] Baylor

After winning the quarterbacking job at Baylor University in spring practice, Kirby Freeman started against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in the first game and proceeded to go 4-11 for 31 yards and 2 costly interceptions. He was later replaced by true freshman (and future Heisman Trophy winner) Robert Griffin as the starting quarterback.

pbcfrcane12

Great stuff 86! Never knew Freeman was replaced by RG III....

Old Skool

The fact that Randy failed to get a sniff from other colleges as an HC says a lot about his people skills. The coaching fraternity seems to be just that a fraternity with a lot of job referrals and recommendations passed from one coach or AD to the next.

It's hard to imagine Randy kicking back with the guys and schmoozing.

More proof that the star system for recruiting and developing players from Florida is not full proof.

FROM ESPN:

4: Number of Under Armour All-Americans who finished in the top 10 in this year's Heisman Trophy voting, led by Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o, who finished second.

The others were USC wide receiver Marqise Lee (fourth), Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller (fifth) and South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney (sixth).

6: Number of Under Armour All-Americans who earned spots on the ESPN All-American team.

Te'o, Lee and Clowney were joined by Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner, Texas A&M offensive tackle Luke Joeckel and Florida State kicker Dustin Hopkins.

7: College football awards earned by Te'o this season. The former Under Armour All-American won the likes of the Maxwell Award for the nation's most outstanding player.

Other award winners included Lee, who took home the Fred Biletnikoff Award for outstanding wide receiver; Joeckel, who won the Outland Trophy for outstanding interior lineman; and Clowney, who earned the Ted Hendricks Award for defensive end of the year.

2,060: All-purpose yards racked up by Miami Hurricanes freshman star running back Duke Johnson, good for ninth in the nation.

Johnson was one of several star first-year players in college football who played in the 2012 Under Armour All-America Game.

28 major college coaching jobs opened up after the 2012 season just ended which matched an all-time record of vacancies.

How many offers did Shannon get as a HC?

Old Skool

And the first former coach to be named as a possible replacement will be ... surprise, surprise ... Jon Gruden.

CaneTemps

"There are a LOT of very average to mediocre QBs in the NFL but none get the treatment that Tebow does."

But none of these backups get the publicity and attention he does, either, especially for someone that doesn't even play. A lot of his publicity he or his posse (his brother and other family members and advisers) is sought out by him behind the scenes, and ESPN willingly complies; and before you question that please note that he signed with two publicity firms in the offseason - FACT. Most starting QBs just have an agent. He has an agent AND signed with William Morris in Hollywood as well as another PR firm.

But hey, I'm sorry if I insulted anyone's hero here as it looks like TebowSpace has quite a few of his supporters lol lol

Old Skool

What's even stranger about Randy is he's not even getting the DC jobs> He's regressed to be being a position coach.

No, like I said, I have NO love for the Gatahs or The Tebow, just making some general observations. Feel free to hate away on Timmy if it helps U make it through the day or just feel better about yourself.

Let's move on to more important things?

86Cane

NFL coaches dropping like flies now. The domino effect is in full force.

I guess the Bangles were right its just another Manic Monday at least for NFL coaches.

Old Skool

Here's another countdown. How long before Nick Saban's name is mentioned?

86Cane

Nick Saban, Chip Kelly and Jon Gruden are hot names as always but so is Mike McCoy the OC from Denver.

86Cane

Danny Hope & Chuck Amato also among those who have interviewed for the FIU vacancy, Miami Herald reports.

raizecane

I want to wish all of you a safe and happy New Year........

FootballScoop is proud to announce that Matt Lubick (Duke) is the 2012 FootballScoop Wide Receivers Coach of the Year presented by ProGrass.

Duke accomplished the previously unthinkable in reaching the postseason for the first time since 1994. A key cog in making the jump to six wins was David Cutcliffe's passing game and, by extension, Matt Lubick's wide receivers. Lubick produced the top pass catching trio in college football, a group that carried the Blue Devils' offense in each of the team's six wins.

Lubick produced the only wide receiving corps in college football to boast three players with more than 60 catches each. Conner Vernon, perhaps the most productive wideout in school history, led the team 75 grabs for 955 yards and seven touchdowns. Jamison Crowder caught 70 balls for a team-leading 1,025 yards and eight touchdowns. Crowder and Vernon ranked third and fourth, respectively, in the ACC in receiving yardage. Desmond Scott rounded out the trio with 61 catches for 606 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Head Coach openings at Bears, Bills, Browns, Chiefs, Eagles. Who gets those gigs?

laquinton

86, that is a great site ! thanks... sooo now can we get the recievers coach from duke?

86Cane

Add San Diego and Arizona to the open head coaching positions: Turner and Whisenhunt FIRED making it 7 in total so far.

86Cane

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

At the same time his case was winding down, Bryan Fortay actually got a chance to be paid to play QB when he joined the Arena Football League’s Miami Hooters in 1995. Back in the City of Miami, Fortay split time at QB with the Hooterswith Cal’s Mike Pawlawski.

Pawlawski went on to a long AFL and XFL career and set AFL records for one-season and career completion percentages, retiring with the highest all-time quarterback rating in AFL history. Pawlawski is now a TV announcer for ESPN, NBC and the Outdoor Channel. On the other hand, Bryan Fortay caught on next with the Frankfurt Galaxy, but this stint in NFL Europe didn’t pan out for him either.

By 1996, Fortay’s brief professional stints in the AFL and NFLE and his case against the University of Miami were all over. Somehow, the NFL career that Fortay envisioned never materialized.

Lol 86.

ACC and NCST getting embarrassed by SEC and Vandy: 31-14.

86Cane

Note the last three names on the list of asst coaches let go below:

Tempe, AZ – The Arizona Cardinals Football Club today announced that General Manager Rod Graves and Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt have been relieved of their duties.

In addition, the following assistant coaches have also been let go by the team: Russ Grimm (Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Line), Mike Miller (Offensive Coordinator), Chad Grimm (Offensive Quality Control), John McNulty (Quarterbacks), Frank Reich (Wide Receivers), and Tommie Robinson (Running Backs).

Nope, Nick Satan ain't leaving Alabama. His got the best situation there, he is treated like a God there.

Besides, he found out the hard way he was not an NFL hc material!

MDCane

IF Miami is still paying Randy, I don't think he wants to get an HC job unless it's more than what Miami is currently paying.

Sean Spence is a Beast!!!

Not about The []_[], but worth a read...

86Cane

A lot of NFL WR assistant coaches just became available but I don't think there are many NFL level coaches who would drop down to the college level at Miami?

Terrance Sullivan

Exactly 86. NC State is a freaking embarrassment hopefully G. Tech can get it done against the real USC. Hopefully LSU spent all night in Magic City and tired and Clemson can get the win.

laquinton

patrick nix to coach at scottsboro high in Alabama

Jack

Happy New year!

Terrance Sullivan

Laquinton good info bro.

BigWindyCane1

Georgia Tech 14, USC 7 - 3rd Quarter.

MDCane

HAPPY NEW YEAR! May the BCS come knocking at our door next year.

Jack

Go Tech and Go ACC!!

myndraize

Hopefully GT can hold on acc has been putrid in bowl games. What in the name of overation happen to the so called pre-season #1

Terrance Sullivan

If G. Tech holds on it will be 2-2 with Clemson and FSU left to play then worst case scenario is 3-3 far from putrid. Mediocre. Hopefully both Clemson and FSU can get it done and finish 4-2. Next year our Canes will be playing inat least the Orange Bowl as ACC champs. Go Canes.

The Dude

McNulty on the AZ staff has Penn State ties. He also coached WRs.

Also Nick Saban was in no way a failure in the NFL. He could coach again in the NFL easily. Many NFL teams would line up for him. He has also alluded to leaving for the NFL a few times.

The Dude

Infact McNulty and Golden were teammates at Penn State.

86Cane

Infact McNulty and Golden were teammates at Penn State.

Posted by: The Dude | December 31, 2012 at 05:24 PM

Yes, I mentioned him earlier also as a potential candidate. I just don't know if ANY of these NFL coaches are coming to UM for less $$$?

86Cane

GT with an INT to possibly seal the deal!

KiriJax

I love watching USC and the lame kitten go down! Good job GT! When I some free time today, I'm going to set up my snacks, put up the no disturb sign, and watch my own bowl game today on YouTube. Just got to choose which Miami game to watch. 2002 Rose Bowl is always a good choice but I might go with something else today. Happy New Year everybody! It's eight hours in and the water's fine...

BigWindyCane1

Georgia Tech dominated the USC. In those recruiting battles with USC in the weeks ahead, Al Golden can now say that his Canes did something this year that Lane Kiffin's Trojans could not - beat Georgia Tech.

laquinton

I like Tulsas QB..

laquinton

miami needs to get dukes wr coach before someone else snags him up

Jack

Chick-fil-a Bowl I like it! It has a better match up than the Sugar and the Orange bowl.

The Dude

That's a great idea KiriJax. Maybe I will go with Miami over Florida in 03. Brock Berlin comeback.

KiriJax

The Dude! Exactly the game I am watching right now! One of my all-time favorites.

YUP!

mi@mic@ne

This USC loss is why you cant trust the bcs... they started off number 1 at the beginning of the year. There is not enough playing out of conference to judge... i cant wait till we start blowing this up again...

The Dude

I know he hasnt announced yet, but, Matthew Thomas welcome to The U. I think we get him 100%. Kid is a Cane.

The Dude

And I think he will be a 1st round draft pick.

The Dude

And, FSU will roll in their bowl game.

Willie Will in Missouri

Bigwindy,

What recruits is Golden battling kiffin for????

Brevardcane

It sort of sucks we lost McDonald because it sounds like from coley we would have him otherwise.

Brevardcane

Still time though.. Hopefully golden makes a great hire

The Dude

Hey WWiN,
How bad @ss do the black digital camo helmets look for the Army All America game?

Brevardcane

Wow ACC beat an SEC top school? Cool! Can't wait til the Canes play in a big bowl game! Go Canes Go ACC!

The Dude

I hope Taj Boyd goes pro. Clemson has a nice squad.

Terrance Sullivan

ACC, ACC, ACC, ACC, ACC!!!!!

Terrance Sullivan

ACC is 3-2 in the bowls with only the suckas from Tally tomorrow.

Brevardcane

I hope this starts a trend of the ACC over the SEC continuing with Miami over fla next year

Terrance Sullivan

The suckas from Tally need to finish the deal tomorrow night to give the ACC a 4-2 bowl record this year.

KiriJax

Wow, great win for Clemson after that embarrassment last year. And good for the ACC!

Willie Will in Missouri

Dude,

I've been trying to Google those helmets but can't find em, I seen a glimpse on facebook I think. Where can I find em at????

The Dude

I saw them on rivals.
