JCane

You're killing me, 86! I make a couple of posts, and you start a new blog within minutes every time! How do you time it so well?! ;)

I'm going to pull them up and put 'em in anyway:

------------------------------------------

Okay, so we head into Monday trying to figure where the U will be ranked in hoops. First, it's too early to even get a real bead on things, as Arizona is down by 6 vs. unranked Cal with @ 8 and 1/2 min left in the game. If Arizona loses then the pollsters have a bit easier time moving the U up potentially over teams with better records imo. It is impossible to do this with a two loss team that has already beaten this three loss U team, but given how the U has been playing lately I doubt that victory over the U would keep Arizona ahead of the Canes with equal loss totals (especially if they lose to unranked Cal). Duke, barely beating BC, along with getting its butts kicked by the U and being behind in the same conference by 2 games could potentially be overtaken. It doesn't matter though, as the U destroyed them at home. Beat them again, and at their home, and the U will look unstoppable (and playing at Cameron is tough). Gonzaga is tougher to figure, but the same could be said for Indiana in the other direction. IU won pretty handily over the Suckeyes in a nice rebound game, giving them a chance to potentially not drop behind the U from the 1 position after losing earlier this week, along with the team that beat them, Illinois, looking like better competition after taking down top 30 Minn. today.

Again, none of this matters. I'd rather they not be #1 at this stage. Let them keep being hungry and feeling slighted a bit straight through until the game at Duke. After, if playing for an ACC tnmt. title and a 1 seed in the NCAA tnmt. isn't enough to drive a team, I don't know what is.

Okay, now Cal is up over Ariz. by 4 with a bit over 4 min. left. The key to me is that now watching basketball is fun not just because I love hoops, but because it matters as a fan of the U. Whether the U is #1 tomorrow (small chance if Ariz. loses), or more likely between 2-4 with an Arizona loss, all is great in Caneland right now. Worst case, with an Ariz. win, is #5(IU could still stay ahead of them), but more likely a #4, and I'm a happy guy. Put the U ahead of FU in hoops would also feel just right!

As for the U football haters out there, how can it not be obvious that the ship is turning?? It may not be to undefeated championship levels, but it is clearly improving as a program bigtime.

Cal is now up over Ariz. by 4 with just under a min. left. Hang onto your seats...this could be big for the U!

Posted by: JCane | February 10, 2013 at 08:57 PM

Cal with a 6 point lead again over 'Zona with 38 sec. left. All bets where to rank the U could be off with a Cal win....

Posted by: JCane | February 10, 2013 at 09:00 PM

Forgive me, but holy crap! Cal is now up by 8 with 21 sec. left, and a foul on 'Zona. Looking like Cal is gonna hang on, likely bringing up the U to anywhere from 1-4 tomorrow. Hang on to your seats!.....It's OVER! Cal wins over Arizona, 77-69! To the tune of the Jeffersons, Movin' on Up!

Posted by: JCane | February 10, 2013 at 09:03 PM

and, btw, can we please talk a little more hoops over here? It's a little disheartening to see a team this good be put #2 by our football team before spring practices even get going. We don't want to let the cat out of the bag to hoops recruits that we only care about football here!

Posted by: JCane | February 10, 2013 at 09:05 PM

Real classy by Brooks Orpik cross checking a 30 goal scorer after he's celebrating and nice to see not even the petulant child's teammates have to worry about getting whistled for gooning it up.

Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | February 10, 2013 at 09:11 PM

Comments by Lunardi (brackets predictor for ncaa tnmt. prior to starting the day):

" The best seat in the house for Sunday's action belongs to the Miami Hurricanes. Everyone's favorite "under the radar" team is no longer that, sitting at No. 5 on the S-Curve and just waiting for someone ahead of them to fall. With No. 1 Duke (at Boston College) and No. 7 Arizona (versus Cal) still to play Sunday, it seems likely the Hurricanes get their wish and move up to the top line between now and Tuesday's full bracket.

Clearly the U will now be guessed as a 1 seed, as they will be in the top 4. I wouldn't be surprised to see them anywhere between 1-4, and most likely 1-3 at this point, with a whole bunch of first place votes now (for the first time ever!).

Also, anyone think Roy Williams (for non hoops fans, this would be UNC's head coach) is taking media lessons from Bobby Bowden lately?:

Terrance Sullivan

86 u are on a roll brother.

Forgot that I can't paste the quote, but it was along the line of everyone in N.C. thinking basketball is all about N.C. schools, but Miami is pretty dadgum good....never heard dadgum by anyone but Bobby B. over the years...

BigWindyCane1

Congratulations to Hurlie Brown. Brown went back to school and got his degree. He played DB for the Canes and won titles under Jimmy and Ericson. He is from Merritt Island, and he did not get his degree when he played, but he later went back and got his degree.

Brown will be able to connect with the recruits all over the state, including South Florida. He has a compelling story and is a good speaker, but I don't know what he knows about teaching and developing RBs, which Richardson was good at.

I guess we are about to find out.

Ohio_Cane

Typepad on the fritz. Eating all my comments!

Rdurk84

Totally unrelated, and my apologies for that, but anyone eles hyped about watching Duke Johnson this coming year? Just watched some of his highlight videos from last year. Can't wait!

roachcane77

As much as I liked the article, (great job as usual 86... you're on FIRE!), I wish it was indeed about...

"This article is not about UM President Donna Shalala and her getting tough with the current NCAA investigation into UM athletics."

Have a great day CaneSpacers!

Jack

Well, do we finally get closure this week and begin to move forward? NCAA Bull Sh#%t I am OVER it! The NCAA had a total "lack of institutional control" funny how Karma works. ;)

Go Canes!!

LB

UM punished North Carolina. Maybe we get a top 3 ranking?

I'm not sure about Brown as the running backs coach, just as I'm not sure about Coley. I care about throughput > output, so I'll reserve judgment until the season comes. However, the two can profit from inexperience due to the talent.

The NCAA got caught with its hand in the cookie jar. Enough. UM has been punished severely in the loss of two bowl games, a conference championship, and countless aftershocks in recruiting. End the investigation with time served. Allow this team to increase its ceiling.

If we can keep him healthy, Duke Johnson will be the most dangerous player in the country next year. Add in a top 10 quarterback and a solid offensive line...

...I don't see why he can't improve his output.

LB

Recent articles from Canesinsight:

Kevin Beard interview. It's quite good. Highlights:

"The thing that kids are lacking when they go to college is the fundamentals and technique, but everybody is fast and strong at the next level, so the thing that will separate you is the technique and that’s what I try to focus on."

Link here: http://canesinsight.com/content.php/1435-Former-Cane-Beard-talks-with-CanesInSight
------------------
They interviewed Luther Campbell. He has significantly toned down his comments...

... :)

86Cane

Jack...Yes, nobody knows for sure but it would seem apparent that something NCAA news related breaks this week, maybe even today.

If the NCAA wants attention from the news as being the "tough guy" on UM then it will break early in the week to take advantage of the full weekly news cycle (around 3 days).

If the NCAA wants the news to be ignored because they want to tuck tail and sweep this whole investigation under the rug and acccept existing self-imposed sanctions then it will break mid to late afternoon on Friday.

86Cane

LB...it looks like from the early voting exit polls that UM will be #3 in the polls with at least several votes for #1 for first time in school history.

The new ESPN power ratings have hit, although not the other formal rankings, with our U now at #2 behind IU:

JCane

Okay, AP is in, and the U is #3 behind IU and Duke, and only barely behind Duke, with 17 first place votes...

So indiana loses last week...miami already blasted duke and yet they rank above miami?? Makes sense?????? They love to hate us..I hope this fuels the team to take it to the next level

LB

"LB,

You do know that Briscoe was moved to the O-line last year?"

Didn't hear that one.

JCane

IU has the same # of losses, and although they lost they also beat a ranked team later in the week. IU has more respect for now. Duke has only lost two games and we lost three, so that's the way it is. The fact that we're barely behind them speaks volumes, and we'll have our chance on 3/2.

Ohio_Cane

That loss to Fla Gulf Coast is hurting so bad right now. Same with loss to Indiana State.

No matter, Canes are #3 in the country and behind a team they STOMPED!

Next game at Duke will be enormous, IF we keep winning, which we should.

Basketball rankings don't matter, they have giant tournament at the end of the year that has some level of popularity with office gamblers I hear to decide who the champion is at the end of the season.

Completely agree, but the recognition of this team's accomplishments would be nice, don't U think?

JCane

The U is #4 in the coaches poll, after Duke, IU and Gonzaga. I like the U having to play catchup and keeping this team hungry and feeling underrecognized. Even the game at Duke doesn't matter that much if they blow it in the ACC tnmt...

5shipsago

They fooled with the idea of Briscoe moving to offense, but he is playing DT.
Only way we lose to the Gators next year is if the defense reverts back to 2012 and I do see us going 10-2. Although FSU lost some key peeps on defense, they are stacked with talent on that side of the ball, so there won't be much drop off of productivity and we have to go to UNC. We should be in every game we play, with the defense only being the ? mark.

orange 'n green in the vein

They haven't accomplished anything yet, still plenty of time for the wheels to come flying off for a variety of reasons O_C.

All that I care about in the present is that the team has shown when healthy they can play at a championship caliber level as evidenced by the current run they're on. Get six games like that at the end of the year from whatever seed they end up as and then you can talk about recognizing accomplishments.

But since UM is so basketball tradition poor even an ACC tourny title would make me consider it a successful year at this point in time.

WWIN/M

OGV,

#1 seed in the tournament helps a LOT, anything can happen in the tournament but your chances are better with that #1 seed

Willie,

He was obviously developing slower than Moore & Ivory. So they experimented with him on the o-line. Thinking if he can't compete this year, how will he compete with the more talented recruits we'll bring in for 2013. The staff just didn't know they would whiff on so many DT recruits in this class. Now, they have no choice but to keep him at DT for depth. Got to coach him up...
