The early 60s and late 90s teams were good too. If the Canes make the Sweet 16 this year, then they are definitely the best Miami team in history.

OGV is correct about the ACC (All Carolina Conference) refs. As far as tomorrow, NCState is a very good team playing very well right now and tomorrow will be a tough game against a hot team. Remember NCState's pre-season and early season ranking, they were a top 5 team.

Of more concern is going to be the NCAA selection process, where they put us, and how far away. These NCAA employees will try and screw us, you watch. They don't even have to come right out and say it, even when talking to each other behind closed doors. A wink and a nod.

Add to that, the NCAA referees who are bitter, underpaid NCAA traditionalists plus the general Miami image, and we better plan to power through these NCAA employees

Miami Hurricanes Recruiting Notes 3-5-2013

Spring practice is underway and that’s where a lot of focus will be for the UM coaching staff and fans alike. With that being said, recruiting never fully stops and neither does this coaching staff.

-Miami has continued its Northeast recruiting efforts by recently offering Class of 2014 defensive tackle Thomas Holley (Lincoln/Brooklyn, N.Y.). He is a 6-foot-5, 285-pound former basketball star who started playing football just one year ago. At one point he was ranked No. 1 in N.Y. and in the top 50 nationally for hoops. Despite his short time with the sport, he has garnered 15 offers from the likes of Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Clemson and Notre Dame. Since this is all new to him, he’s staying open to all colleges that offer until he looks into each program. After that, he’ll start narrowing things down.

-A couple younger prospects to talk about are 2015 Orangewood Christian linebacker Jimmy Martin and 2016 Dr. Phillips linebacker Jonathan Pollock. The two Orlando, Fla., standouts have a lot of interest in Miami and both have been to camp. Martin, 6-foot and 205-pounds, went to Miami’s Junior Day and is planning to attend the Al Golden Football Camp to earn an offer. At Junior Day, he spoke with Art Kehoe and Michael Barrow about potentially playing at The U. Pollock is the only freshman on varsity at Central Florida powerhouse Dr. Phillips. He went to the Al Golden Football Camp last year and the coaches took him into their office and said they were very impressed. They couldn’t believe that he was HEADING into his 9th grade year at the time. Martin and Pollock were both at the NUC 5-Star Showcase Sunday going against good competition and were able to hold their own.

-Miami quarterback commitment Alin Edouard (Hialeah, Fla.) went to Miami’s spring practice Saturday. He had a good time and is continuing to be an ambassador of the Canes for the Class of 2014. An interesting side note, Edouard told me that Nebraska has been on him hard lately, but it looks as if Louisville might be making a push now. They offered him a day after his 7v7 teammate, Michael Johnson, committed to them. Louisville has done very well in South Florida and couldn’t be happier with Teddy Bridgewater, a quarterback originally committed to Miami in 2011. Edouard is solid to Miami, but expect colleges to continue to try and peel him away from The U.

-For those that may have missed the events of 2013 linebacker Edward Williams (Warren Easton/New Orleans, La.), here’s the latest. Basically, Miami offered him in the twelfth hour and that made him rethink things on National Signing Day enough to postpone his decision. In the end, however, he chose to stay close to home for his mother who has health problems and signed with Tulane on March 2. James Smith from Nola/Times-Picayune feels that Williams is going to be a tremendous player at Tulane.

My day is complete.

86Cane

Visiting Miami handed No. 1 North Carolina its first loss of the season Friday night at Boshamer Stadium, upending the nation's top-ranked team by a final score of 4-1.

Behind a strong outing from sophomore lefthander Chris Diaz (2-1) and some timely two-out hitting from its offense, Miami captured its sixth straight victory over the Tar Heels and its first upset of a No. 1-ranked team since a May 13, 2011 win at Virginia.

After struggling to develop any offense in the game's first few innings, the Hurricanes struck for three runs in the top of the fifth. North Carolina ace Kent Emanuel (3-1), who entered Friday night's series opener having allowed only six walks on the season, issued a four-pitch free pass to freshman Ricky Eusebio to lead off the frame.

Fellow newcomer Brandon Lopez successfully advanced Eusebio with a sacrifice bunt down the first base line, while Eusebio took third on his fourth steal of the season. With two outs, freshman Christopher Barr worked an eight-pitch at bat and was rewarded with Miami's second walk of the inning.

With runners on the corners, junior Alex Hernandez blooped an Emanuel offering in between Carolina first baseman Cody Stubbs and outfielder Skye Bolt just inside the rightfield line. Eusebio raced home from third to open the game's scoring in Miami's favor. And the Hurricanes weren't done yet.

After Hernandez successfully stole second, senior Chantz Mack ripped a two-RBI single up the middle on a full-pitch count, plating both runners to take a 3-0 lead.

That was all Diaz would need. The sophomore southpaw battled his way to seven efficient innings, earning his second win of the season by scattering six hits and just one earned run over 111 pitches.

Can we petition to get the UMD/Duke officiating crew assigned Saturday? Or did they call that game slightly in the Terps favor for some major cash kickback tonight and we shouldn't even bother?

CoCane

Sorry Soup. Our road didn't get easier. Not the way NC State is playing compared to the way we're playing. If they go through the motions tomorrow, they'll get blown out. NC State is looking like an NBA team that got bored with the regular season & is turning on in preperation for the post season. They're spanking teams that are giving us hell. I don't have a good feeling about tomorrow...

Oh and FIRE JIM MORRIS!

Sorry, reflex action since, you know, bad coaching for the football team and all these last two years.

Yeah...BUT I think that's because we're playing the "take what the defense gives" us type of ball. Instead of playing take what the defense gives us, AND!, taking what WE WANT TO TAKE, when we WANT TO TAKE IT!

You know, PIMP-BALL.

orange 'n green in the vein

The Pimp came out and put it on front street CR and you are exactly right when they went to zone,

"We got a little passive," Larranaga said. "We didn't attack the way we wanted to."

They quit making two guys play them and getting the zone a pass behind for the open three point shooter to make them pay for playing zone defense. Instead it was pass around the top of the perimeter and jack up the somewhat contested three instead of working hard to get the zone shrunk toward the paint and shooting the uncontested one.

JCane

Okay, an interesting setup is taking place in the ACC tnmt. Maryland is playing for their post-season lives. NCState is healthy and playing great ball. Duke apparently wasn't all that excited to play extra games at this stage, locking in at least a #2 and still possibly a #1 NCAA seed without having to risk injury. UNC is up on FSU by 8 at the half. Unfortunately I see NCSU as being the likely favorite to pull out the ACC tnmt. championship based on momentum. However, if the U can take down NCState and then likely UNC after, I see the U moving back into the #1 seed slot, depending on what happens with Louisville, IU and KU going forward. Winning the next two games, especially as the equivalent to a road dog (in Greensboro, NC vs two different NC schools, should they get past NCState and should the likely UNC win over Maryland happen), probably would be enough to boost the U over Duke again, although not as much as if Duke had won tonight and actually played and lost to the U in the tnmt. championship.

Too much wasted thought. Just take down NCState tomorrow and it will be a nice day.

Nice win by the guys with spikes today over UNC. Let's make a weekend of NC schools losing to the U in all sports.

86Cane

Coke...I did NOT mnean that tomorrow got easier, I meant that IF we beat NCST then it the ACC title run get's easier. I agree that Duke losing changed NOTHING about tomorrow's tough, TOUGH game.

86Cane

For Kiri's eyes ONLY:

The No. 70 University of Miami men's tennis team dropped their ACC opener at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center with a tough 4-3 loss to the No. 25 Clemson Tigers. The loss drops Miami to 9-5 on the season.
"It was a really hard fought match today by our guys today," head coach Mario Rincon said. "Omar fought back from being down a set to give us a win on court four, and Marco was almost able to do the same for us in his match. We knew Clemson was going to be tough, but we gave them a great effort and fought them until the end. My hat goes off to Clemson for playing well in the most important points."

The Tigers barely edged out the doubles point to start off the match. The 11th ranked doubles team of brothers Yannick and Dominque Maden dominated the Canes No. 1 team of Omar Aly and Wilfredo Gonzalez with a quick 8-2 victory. On court three, Miami's Henrique Tsukamoto and Marco Stancati played very well but ultimately lost 9-8 to Clemson's Gerardo Meza and Hunter Harrington to clinch the doubles point for the Tigers.

Mia Chi 'Cane '98

I do not like tomorrows match up the way the 'Canes are playing right now. Plus Miami never plays well against NCST. I have a feeling UNC is going to win the ACC Tourney. The Duke's & UNC's always find the easiest path to the championships.

No matter what happens Miami is in and the real season starts on Thursday/Friday.

Going to watch the game with some good friends who are also alumni. This maybe the second time (first time was the 2000 Sweet 16 vs Tulsa) ever that we are getting together to watch a 'Canes bball game. In the last 15 years living in Chicago we have only watched football.

KiriJax

It was a really good effort by the men's tennis team today. They fought down to the last tiebreaker against the 25th-ranked Clemson. They lost but if they can fight the rest of the ACC season the rest of the season, they'll finish with a .500 or better record and make it to the ncaa tournament. If you're on Twitter, give Marco Stancati a follow as he lost his second tough match-deciding tiebreaker in the last couple of weeks. Georgia Tech on Sunday. This is one of the must wins! My preview for the rest of the Canes' season. (Post #46)

MCC 98,

You do know we beat NC State at their house this year right? I feel you though. They're playing better ball then us right now. If we don't focus tomorrow, we could get beat down...

Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | March 15, 2013 at 10:33 PM

Yeah, I noticed Georgetown was doing that against Syracuse. My theory with the zone, is to attack it first, and take it from there. Because if somebody goes to the basket, somebody has to stop em'...and that's man to man.

CaneRock

If Gamble holds Leslie down, we should be alright. That's ASSUMING!, they put Gamble on Leslie...

Mia Chi 'Cane '98

CoCane,

Miami needed a put back by the invisible Reggie Johnson to beat NCST. And that was before Miami was down by 5 with over a minute left. I do not like the history of this matchup. I just feel like NCST will beat the 'Canes by 8 points. I hope I am wrong and they buck the trend.

The announcers in today's game made an interesting comment how Miami should be looking forward to playing a team outside the ACC in the big dance. Everyone in the conference has tape of every team and they know tendenances of players.

DeeCane

I'm one of the ones you owe 86cane...lol...this NC State game is gonna be a true test..I think of we get big Reg involved quickly n Gamble on the defensive end, and we should be ok..our Bugs will be the key what I think

If the Canes can get Reggie to play with energy like yesterday, Gamble to stay out of foul trouble early, Larkin to attack with a killer instinct, and not take contested 3's 5-10 seconds into the shot clock, we will clobber NC ST.

If none of that happens, we're gonna lose today

How do we feel about the game today?

orange 'n green in the vein

/\/\/\

I can't speak for the rest of you but personally I feel good, UM needs to quicken the pace as much as they can and hope to wear down NCST in the 2nd half today, make them feel like they're playing the third game in three days. This is about as un-neutral a neutral sight game as you'll ever find so handling the crowd noise and getting full mileage out of every foul called against them is going to be very important but I actually like the individual match-ups for Miami today and think they can get inside for easy buckets as NCST has nobody who can post defend Johnson and keep him from taking as much paint real estate as he wants any given possession.

Regardless of the final score today, this is going to be a great opportunity for UM to get a preview of the kind of atmosphere their NCAA games are going to be like as long as they're still in the bracket this year and you just know The Pimp's going to throw something at the NCST they didn't see from UM last time they played.

Agree with EVERYthing, especially the part about Reggie playing with energy.
Something else that we have going for us, that hasn't been mentioned, is we're HEALTHY! 100% HEALTHY!
I don't think we could've said that last year at this point.

CaneRock

IF! we win, who would ya'll rather play, UNC, or Maryland?

I say UNC, because UMD has some hella LENGTH down low. On the other hand, Roy Williams has UNC in tourney mode.

IraqiCane

Yeah Maryland.

Canesfan_1

Plenty for the canes to play for against NC State today other than tournament seeding in a couple of weeks.

How about revenge for lack of respect from the NC State coaching staff. Remember assistant coach Bobby Lutz giving the choke sign to Miami players with state up 5 and about 1:47 to go. We won that game, but I just hope the players remember that classless disrespect

NCST looks TIRED today.

Get Reggie's ass out!

CoCane

WTF IS WRONG WITH REGGIE JOHNSON???!!!

Willie Will in Nashville

What's up wit these yellow shoes???????

orange 'n green in the vein

Refs letting NCST play through every defensive bump right now but UM isn't flinching today. You can see The Pimp wrestling with whether he should turn this game into a street fight or try to press the pace with his team right now. I actually think the street fight option might be their best right now, walk it up and grind the clock every possession.

WWiN, these guys grew up with NBA Jam as their go to arcade basketball game, it's the 'turbo' shoes look.

Willie Will in Nashville

Why was Reggie Johnson put in the game? What did Gamble do wrong, make somebody foul him?

Canesteeler

Willie I don't know the answer to that other than pimp wishing and hoping for Reggie to respond. I would rather see the 7 ft freshman getting more time than Reggie.

orange 'n green in the vein

NCST looks like they're ready to go home and rest while watching the selection show as a team together right now.

Getting some tertiary scoring going with Kadji to augment Larkin and Scott should be the final piece of the offensive puzzle today.

CoCane

Why won't Kadji get his big azz down low & get Leslie a 3rd foul instead of jacking up 3's??? Attack the beast where it's wounded! DUUUUUUUH!

Willie Will in Nashville

WWiN, these guys grew up with NBA Jam as their go to arcade basketball game, it's the 'turbo' shoes look.

UM is playing only 5-7 today.

It's an improvement.

CoCane

Reggie & Kadji are playing like they're scared to bang in the paint. Leslie has 2 fouls & we're letting him off the hook by not going at him. Smh

orange 'n green in the vein

I think every foul on UM has been a touch foul to this point while NCST gets the whistled swallowed every single possession. Unbelievable until you consider what team will draw more attendance in the final between the two, then it all makes sense.

Canesteeler

The female announcer is bugging me

orange 'n green in the vein

Anytime they want to call this game even UM will be happy to blow this team out. Thus the officiating.

orange 'n green in the vein

Would you prefer her or Vitale?

You're right, mute them both and stream WQAM instead even if they're seven seconds behind.

Willie Will in Nashville

OGV,

We'll blow em out as soon as Big Reggie is on the bench!

Willie Will in Nashville

I can take Vitale, as long as its not a Duke or unc game

orange 'n green in the vein

WWiN, he's getting hacked every time he holds the ball and no call is made, I agree he needs to be stronger with the ball in his hands but with the officiating in the game today, there's not too much I can really get pissy at him for. He's played pretty good on the defensive end except for the getting caught unaware for the first NCST bucket.

The Pimp obviously had his team ready today, just hope he makes them keep their foot on the gas and they can run these guys out of the gym by a wide margin.

orange 'n green in the vein

Dick looked so depressed when they showed him court-side today, I couldn't help by LMAO at his sadness at not getting to verbally service his beloved K.

I think only Swafford hates UMD more today.

The Dude

Lets clarify something for ESPN: Miami HAS a big lead. I know they are trying to sing the praises of NCST by saying Miami HAD a big lead. Weve been beating on them the whole time and will continue to.

The Dude

Sweet my post wasnt ate.

BEERicane

DoughBoy the human turnover out in full force again today. New policy, anyone who passes the ball to DoughBoy is equally responsible for the TO. Oh, and Coach L should be held responsible for putting his fat arse in there to begin with. He is less than worthless.
