The scout said former UM safety Ray Ray Armstrong “doesn’t have enough speed to play safety. He has to be a linebacker.”

The Miami Hurricanes opened a five-game homestand in impressive fashion Wednesday night, capturing their midweek affair with visiting Bethune-Cookman by a final score of 6-1.

Junior righthander Javi Salas (4-4), coming off a complete game win over Stetson last time out, delivered another strong outing against the Wildcats. The Coral Gables, Fla., native allowed just one unearned run over seven innings of work, striking out four batters while scattering just four hits.

Though the game remained close in the middle innings, Miami blew it open with three runs in the eighth. RBI singles from Alex San Juan and Garrett Kennedy, along with the second double of the night from junior Alex Hernandez, saw the hosts take a late five-run lead heading into the ninth.

Miami (25-15) had at least two runners on base in each of the game's first four innings, but came up empty in its first two chances. A gaffe from Hernandez on the basepaths resulted in an inning-ending double play in the first, while Wildcats' starter Ali Simpson (3-6) worked his way out of a big jam in the second with two strikeouts and a groundout.

The Hurricanes will return to Mark Light Field for an Atlantic Coast Conference series with No. 20 Clemson beginning Friday, April 19. First pitch for the series opener, is set for 7 p.m.

K-State's Snyder: College athletics 'in a bad place right now'

Dennis Dodd
CBS Sports

http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/blog/dennis-dodd/22091018/k-states-snyder-college-athletics-in-a-bad-place-right-now-

I told U so last night.

Montreal-Cane

College athletics, particularly football, has changed dramatically throughout my career, Snyder said on 610 Sports Radio KCSP.

I think it's in a bad place right now. It's in a bad place for a variety of reasons. We've allowed it to become money driven. We've allowed it to become TV driven. We've allowed athletic programs or football programs to mean more to a university than what the university is really supposed to be all about.

LB

"We've allowed athletic programs or football programs to mean more to a university than what the university is really supposed to be all about."

Funny. I'd take a big guess to think some of the deluded of the NCAA think that's what UM is.

LB

More evidence that Coley wants to move UM from pure pro QB's to dual threats.

I saw that too: I hope we still pursue Ricky town

I hate dual threat QB,s--Its gotten FSU very far!

How far have "Pro-Style" QBs gotten us...
Look what Kaepernick,Griffin, and Wilson did for their respective teams.

UpNorthCane

CaneRock.. I wouldn't blame that on "Pro-Style" qbs I would say that's the fault of bad OC's and not being able to land a good Pro Style QB.

We all Saw what Bama did to Notre Lames Qb, and what The U did to poor Erick Crouch....

With an O-line like ours I want a Pro-style Qb sligning that pigskin to playmakers for sure...

UMike

It does appear that Coley is going after some Dual Threat guys..but as long as they can throw who cares lol..Besides having that option in the O isnt a bad thing, many teams have had a lot of success with it. it is no secret he wants to run a "pro spread" offense

UMike

Also..I know its early..and I know some rumors are he might commit soon..but I think Vincent Jackson will go to Bama.jmo

TJL

So what dual threat guys have won the SB? 49ers lost to a PRO style QB

TriangleCane

Every NC that Nebraska or Ok won was due to a dual Qb, sans 1. Vince, Cam, Tebow (I want my dual threat to be able to throw), Ward, Tommie F, FSU would have shut VT out if it wasn't for Vick. Would UM went undefeated in 2000 with Kelly?

Montana-Would Run
Steve Young-Runner
John Elway-Runner

Colin will win a super bowl. The NFL is a pocket QB League.

Old Skool

UMike.

Don't be too certain about Vincent and Alabama unless you've got inside info.

Jesuit is a school with strong academics. He's likely to understand the value of a degree from a first rate university as opposed to Bama.

In that regard the quality of the program in whatever he wants to major in will likely be a factor as much as coaching or won-loss record of the football team.

I don't know if it's a plus for the U, but Vinny T helps coach Jesuit.

LB

We'll still pursue Town, I'm confident.

The NFL and college football are two different animals.

I dont need inside info lol...I never had inside info..but I access TONS of information via Twitter, Facebook, Blogs, Videos etc etc etc. Like I said it was my opinion..but I think he will end up at Bama.

CaneRock

want my dual threat to be able to throw

Posted by: TriangleCane | April 18, 2013 at 11:28 AM

NO DOUBT!

And it's not like these kids can't be converted to PSQBs when they get on campus, look at Teddy Bridgewater for example.

Hell, look at Stephen Morris, a lot of people forget that He was heavily recruited by Rich Rod coming out of HS.

The Dude

How would you guys rate our unit speed at WR compared to past units. I think we close with a lot of great speed but no elite speed.

LB

I don't think the unit compares to any.

Hurns, Scott, Waters, Dorsett, and Lewis would be our starting five. I do think that either Griffin or Coley (Golden stated Griffin was a WR via Sid) will crack this list.

Hurns and Lewis have the best hands of the group, and are probably the best all-around receivers. Lewis is still coming back from a serious injury, though.

Dorsett is streaky, good or bad. He has excellent quickness inside the front 7 when he has the ball. I consider Waters your "home run ready to happen" as he shows excellent burst in the second level. Scott is a question mark. We'll see if he's as serious as advertised come game week vs. the Gators.

We've had an exorbant amount of drops over the last few years, and I think the coaching change couldn't come at a better time. Morris's accuracy has improved even from the red-hot end of last season.

As a group (including Coley/Griffin), I think they're better than what we've had since the mid-2000's. However, I don't know if we have that dominating receiver that we need to be a 12 win team. However, we certainly have the schedule to win double digit games and claim the Coastal.

j.w.

Just gvie me a good QB, I'm not to ocrazy about hte run first pass second dual threat QB's, but there are some I would love to have.

Old Skool

UMike

No it didn't feel like you were bashing me.

I gotta say I would love for some recruit to do what it was rumored Hargraves was going to do last year.

That is tell the recruiting services one thing and do something else. Be a silent commit to the one school, but tell the services you're going somewhere else. You don't have to tell the other school you're going there (they can't comment anyway) just the services that you're a solid commitment. It get's them off your back (no more weekly calls) and gives you maximum publicity on signing day when all their prognostications and rankings turn out to be false.

CoCane

LB,

To me Scott is the best all around WR. He has size, speed, quickness. He can go deep or catch a short pass & take it to the house. He might have led the team in recieving if he didn't get suspended for the last 3 games...

I'll have to listen again but it sounded like Golden was talking about the recruits that were coming in the fall. While doing that, he mentioned Stacey Coley at WR. Then, mentioned Griffin. He didn't really say that Griffin would play WR. I'm not saying he won't but the way he worded it, I would have to listen again to be sure.

UMike

Skool..I agree. But some of these kids LOVE the spotlight. The new thing is trying to get their offers up, even if they have ZERO interests in the schools. More and more interviews kids are saying how they are hoping for a Miami offer..AND Bama and Florida lol...If your hoping for an offer from a school is should be because that is the school you want to go to, why else would you want an offer lol

CaneRock

Coke, Corey King looked pretty good in the Spring Game. He whiffed on a couple of tackles in the backfield, but I can't blame em', it was one Randy "Duke" Johnson LOL. He played with a lot of energy too, I liked His hustle.

CoCane

UMike,

They want more offers because it helps their ranking as a recruit. The higher you're ranked, the more "perks" you'll recieve when you get to school...

UMike

CoCane..I get that part..I understand why they do it..but its my point..to get in the spot light and the perks etc

Montreal-Cane

We won 5 NC with Pro style...Just saying...

Terrance Sullivan

Exactly Montreal-Cane.

herbieibis

Montreal,
That was then this is now. Maybe 20% of the programs across the nation are running a Pro-Style offense. It's getting harder & harder to find a pure pro-style QB. We just need someone who is smart and can get the ball where it needs to be, a game manager, A la Steve Walsh type.
I don't know where V. J. is going but we need some LB's As bad as we need some DT's.

raizecane

UM is known as QB U and it's not because of a dual threat QB. Anybody knows if you want to have the best chance to make it in the NFL as a QB, you need to play in a pro style at the college level. This whole dual threat in the NFL is a gimmick that wont last long....RGIII lasted how long?

orange 'n green in the vein

UMike, just another great reason to tune out recruiting before a season than ever IMO.

Coley and Dumbo and the rest of the offensive coaches are the main reason F$U hasn't made it back to a title that matters contention yet from what I've seen there. If you see Morris running designed draws in the middle of the field more than 15 yards from the end-zone with any regularity this year, you'll know he's shaping up to be just another Pat Nix with a Miami hometown.

At least we know Coley's ego isn't going to the be the reason he might continually go to an empty well in philosophy and play calling though, no ego drunk coach would come in and adopt the former coordinator's verbiage simply for the sake of an easy transition, so if he does hit on an empty chamber in the playbook or employs a shaky philosophy for moving the ball, I have confidence he'll be able to do like Fisch did after his stint at Minny and say, "Well, this wasn't working very well for various reasons, what can I change coaching-wise to make this team play better," as opposed to what the defensive coordinator does, which is just blame the roster of players while pointing to his MAC history to distract from his tenure at the real Miami being one of the, if not the, worst on record at his job.

The herb, fads may come and go but three of the last four champions, committed pro style teams. The fourth, the QB could throw from the pocket better than he could run, and he could run as well as anybody you want to compare him too, no doubt, but what made him special was his ability in the pocket first, then his ability to hurt you with his feet if the play broke down.

There is no question that Scott is the most talented WR during the spring. Can he be mature and consistent will be the question.

orange 'n green in the vein

I think Scott has the measurable edge over the rest of the corps, but for my money, on game-day, Dorsett or even Allen Hurns please.

roachcane77

Here's my professional opinion...

I'm for whomever gets open, catches the ball, and runs it into the end zone!

Let's Go Canes!

Pre83

I'm getting amped up for the NHL Playoffs, but I don't need it to be winter to enjoy them - It's been snowing & blowing since 11AM & is to continue all night until 8AM. 6+ inches after it's done & maybe a few more after Sat.

I'm flat out sick of this winter - it's April 18th!!!

Anyway, some interesting news on Forston:
"Forston is on the roster, Pete. I like his work ethic, from what I've seen. I remember talking with Vince Wilfork last year and he said, "He's going to help us at some point." One of the things Forston did behind the scenes last year that made an impression on some of his teammates was playing scout-team OL when they had a run of OL injuries. That's what you have to do to make yourself valuable to a team. Obviously, Forston wants to break through as a DL and I wouldn't count him out."

### UM badly wants Plantation American Heritage running back Sony Michel (Rivals.com’s No. 5 player in the 2014 class) and Michel said he will orally commit next week, from among UM, Georgia, UF, FSU and Notre Dame. UM believes he can be a slightly bigger version of Duke Johnson.

UM is cautiously optimistic because Michel has been around the UM program so much and his coach said he wants his Broward-based parents to be able to see him play. But Georgia is a formidable challenger.

“Sonny and [Georgia coach] Mark Richt have a good aura,” Heritage coach Mike Rumph said. “Sony reminds me of Bo Jackson, with his power and speed combination.”
UM already has a commitment from Miami Central top-flight running back Joseph Yearby, the No. 40 player in the 2014 class.

BigWindyCane1

I like Sony Michel and I have seen him play and I saw Duke play in high school. I don't understand the comparison in the same article to Duke and Bo Jackson. They are two different kind of running backs.

I think Michel is slightly more talented than Yearby, but Yearby has very good RB instincts. But the Duke Johnson comparison? Duke was a special back and although he may have been small, you could just see that he had the "it" factor in terms of understanding how and when to make cuts and take it to the house.

I don't see Michel as a bigger version of Duke, but Michel will be very special RB in his own way.

If Yearby and Michel both come, I see the Canes having at least three NFL-caliber RBs in the same backfield, just as they did when there was Gore, McGahee and Portis in the early 2000s. Each RB was different, but each went on to have great NFL careers. That would be awesome! Golden is building something special.

CaneRock

I agree BigWindyCane1, don't get those comparisons, ESPECIALLY! to Bo Jackson.
A fair comparison would be Sony and Lamar Miller.
