Is there any team outside the sec doing well signing DTs?

Posted by: My Balls are Sweaty | May 06, 2013 at 06:36 AM

In the class of 2013 recruiting cycle outside of the SEC schools ND, USC, FSU, UNC, Michigan, Ohio State, Washington and Baylor signed a top 25 DT.

In the State of FL there were 4 DTs rated in the top 30 by Scout. FSU signed 2 of them the #7 and #18 ranked DTs and UF signed 2 also the #17 and #19 ranked DTs from 2013. Which means UM signed 0.

According to sources there are allegations are that at least one of the UF recruits had the kitchen sink of recruiting enticements thrown at him which according to "rumors" is why the UF DT coached recently "resigned" to "spend more time with his "family".

In 2012 according to Scout there was only ONE DT from FL ranked in the top 30: Omari Phiilps from Venice, FL. He was ranked #19 and went to Tennessee.

In 2012 UF signed a JC transfer who was ranked #20 and that's all.

In 2012 FSU sigend 2 DT's ranked in the top 25 on Scout. FSU signed the #4 and #10 ranked DTs that year but neither was from FL, one was from Wash D.C. and the other from Alabama.

In 2011 there were only 2 DTs from FL ranked in the top 25 by Scout. FSU signed the #4 ranked propect and UF signed NONE. The other recruit from FL was ranked #23 and went to Bama.

In 2011 Miami signed Jalen Grimble from Las Vegas, NV the #7 ranked DT nationally by Scout.

So in the last two years FSU has signed the #4, #4, #7, #10 and #18 ranked DTs to Miami's ONE (#7 Grimble). UF has signed the #17, #19 and #20 for three total over the last three years (one a JC transfer).

My intial analysis of these facts is consistent with Canespace recruiting expert UMike and is as follows: "NOT GOOD".

Canesfan_1

First, right off the bat, I'm no Onofrio or Jethro fan. I hate onofrio's passive, ten yards off the ball scheme. My problem with Jethro is he hasn't produced bottom line. Whether I aching or recruiting, based on MEASUABLE results.

But this "I have read/heard from multiple places that Franklin is an azz clown on the recruiting trail and many families just dont like him" is just gossip rag nonsense. How about some specifics, and sources, otherwise it's meaningless mouth diahhrhea. We have enough problems recruiting defensive players without this unsourced silly gossip being put out there TO HURT US.

Just my 2 cents

UMike

Awww...did Canesfane_1 not like my comment again?? lol...I said I "read/heard"...just passing it along Dude...but dam..hurt my credibility again lol

UMike

Yea..i was purposely trying to hurt Miami..that makes sense lol

UMike

I think as long as we win some games this year (8 to 10), and our D shows any improvement, we should pick up Clark & Valentine and perhaps a JUCO DT or two. We are also in the thick of it for Lamont Gaillard and Thomas Holley.

UMike

Miami coaches also recently visited Lorenzo Carter the #1 rated DE and #9 overall. I don't think he is realistic, but at least the staff is putting in the work.

UMike

Any of you guys have any experience with handicapped seats at Sun Life? If so do you about the pricing and/or how to buy them

Not U personally UMike, but believe me when I tell U that OTHERS are intentionally trying to hurt UM and spreading untrue rumors is the oldest trick in the book to get that done. They almost always get repeated as was the case here.

FROM HEATHER AT THE ESPN ACC BLOG

Miami officials aren't the only ones still waiting for closure from the NCAA on its investigation into the program.

ACC commissioner John Swofford told ESPN.com on Thursday that the mere length of this case is "a sanction in itself." A hearing is scheduled to begin in June, but Miami officials filed a motion about a month ago to dismiss the case before it even gets that far. Miami is not commenting publicly on whether or not the NCAA has granted or denied its motion, but a school representative said the university has heard from the Committee on Infractions and that, "as of now, we are progressing towards the hearing."

The NCAA did not immediately return a phone call and email seeking comment on Friday afternoon.

“I think Miami has handled its part of this in a quality way and a very appropriate way and has addressed it head-up with self-imposed sanctions," Swofford said. "Hopefully this will be coming to an end in the next few months because it’s dragged on long enough. That’s a sanction in itself, when something of this nature drags on literally for years without being brought to a conclusion. So hopefully we’re near the end of it.”

We don't know if this rumor isn't true lol

UMike

It definitely isn't a rumor that his D-Line has consistently under performed lol

BEERicane

I don't know that I can say they've underperformed. Crap in, Crap out, right?

UMike

Something is definitely scaring these DT recruits away. We have managed to get highly rated QB's, DB's, WR's, TE's, LB's (not many), and DE's..but no DT's. The last highly rated DT we had that committed AND signed was Luther Robinson who was a 4-Star in the 2009 class.

UMike

BEER..you could definitely be right, but Chick didn't seem to improve and he was our best, or among our best, DL. I think we had enough talent to be better than we were. I know he isn't dealing with the deepest pool of talent, but geez lol

Houston

The stats don't lie. The D-line has not produced, BUT you can see improvements (O. Pierre, Robinson and Porter). I really think the early depature from 2 years ago hurt and AG and staff had to bring in bodies for the D-Line (King, Plug, etc.) Now we just have to continue teaching and making the most of the D-line on campus and recruiting others. It is time for Grimble to produce. IF he can bring his game up to O.P., L. Robinson, and C. Porter that will go a long ways allow us to rotate 4 quality guys in. We can then rotate them out on 3rd and long (when's the last time we had one of those) and bring in a Chick to get more speed in the interior.

UMike

Here is the "talent" Miami has brought in since the 2010 class. Not all players made the field and some didn't quality etc..but here are the D-Line commits according to Rivals starting with the 2010 class.

2010
Jeffery Brown DT 2-Star
Tavadis Glenn DT 4-Star
David Perry DE 3-Star
Andrew Tallman DE 3-Star
Delmar Taylor DT 3-Star

2011
Anthony Chickillo DE 4-Star
Jalen Grimble DE 4-Star
Olsen Pierre DE 3-Star
Corey King DT 2-Star
Darius Smith DT Unrated

2012
Jacoby Briscoe DT 3-Star
Jelani Hamilton DE 4-Star
Dwayne Hoilett DE 3-Star
Dequan Ivery DT 3-Star
Tyriq McCord DE 4-Star
Earl Moore DT 3-Star
Jake O'Donnell DE 3-Star

2013
Ufomba Kamalu DE 2-Star
Al-Quadin Muhammad DE 4-Star

UMike

Houston...I didn't take into account the early departures, good point. I don't think Porter improved as much as e just got healthy. But Pierre has improved, i agree.

herbieibis

And that's sad, that Lutha was even a 4 star. He's played like a no-star.Let's put blame where blame is deserved, first our present DT's scare no-one! Now we can blame the coaches, it's true, are DEE-line coach (Jethro) hasn't motivated anybody, except to get out of the way of the ball carrier and don't touch the QB until, he's drank his coffee. In their defense, the talent level is not very good, I hate to say it, but it's true. What did we do to remedy the problem, nothing, we couldn't land one DT but of course we only went after about 4 guys initially and only after we didn't get those guys did we go after about 4 more and that went South too! We did get some raw bone, that played DE and he will move to tackle, so I guess we did get one. Our LB position is a little brighter but it seems we are in the business now of getting them ready for the JR. Colleges. The Herb sees the Defensive front playing better than they did last year, they can't be much worse, so that has to be a plus. We'll dip inside of the 90's at best. I hate it for our guys in the secondary because we actually have some talent back their.

Houston

Another Houston? Sup brah are you in Houston TX? Not many fans out here.

This Haith thing is interesting because I've talked to tellers at the evil corporation who have stated if you look into certain accounts (think trash 'reality' TV 'stars' who are on the cover of the local supermarket rag with their ugly sisters and a baby bump with no wedding ring) without authorization an investigation is immediately launched into the employee's actions and you're basically fired unless they or their representatives are standing there telling you to bring up the account.
Now, obviously, Frank Haith isn't pregnant by a rapper, so he doesn't have that kind of protection, but still, he deserves privacy of his records despite the lawyer scum who think otherwise on the payroll of the NCAA being whipped up into a frenzy by Kyle Wrong's #1 fan who wants to elope to a state that will recognize his marriage to the bust.

------------------------------------------

"As we reported in our last post, the NCAA this past week essentially ruled out UM’s hopes of the case against it being dismissed before a full hearing in front of the infractions committee in mid-June.

Meanwhile, for the first time, Al Golden is quantifying – with numbers -- the impact this case has had on recruiting.
“If you just take the number of kids that flipped on us in the last two years, that’s a big number,” Golden told us.

“But I’m talking about kids [that say]: ‘I really like Miami, but I don’t know what’s going to happen’ [with the NCAA]. That number is well over 40. Easily over 40.

“The further they get along in the decision-making process, the attacks on us grow exponentially once we’re identified as one of the players in their picks.”

Golden said he doesn’t believe the investigation has hurt the perception of the program but “the toxicity is the problem, whether it’s through the media or things the kids are exposed to. There hasn’t been a time where we haven’t had negative recruiting. It’s been difficult.”

For a three way tie in a six team division?

Please. I know the schedule bar is being lowered but there's still standards at the football program that need to be kept up. And I'm not (just) talking about the joke of naming an empty trophy case football team as the 'standard' of the league when they've fallen off the cliff as soon as those words passed the football coach's lips and tickets are $5 to the game against them this year.

I'm sure Al can avoid negative recruiting if that gosh darn unfair NCAA would just fast track this whole deal already, that will stop the mean other coaches from saying bad things about Miami immediately, I just know it! SMDH.

Booker T. Washington linebacker Matthew Thomas – one of the prized gems in Florida State’s highly-touted recruiting class in February – said Monday he is seeking a release from his scholarship so he can sign with Georgia or USC.

Thomas, the No. 1 recruit in Miami-Dade in 2013 and the nation’s No. 2 outside linebacker according to Rivals.com, said he informed FSU coach Jimbo Fisher and defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt late last month that he is not planning on reporting to school in the fall and that he hopes the school will allow him to play elsewhere. But Thomas (6-3, 205) said FSU’s coaches do not want to release him and told him last week they’re planning on visiting him in South Florida to try and talk things over.

From same article:

### The NCAA confirmed to UM last week that it’s throwing out all of Kyle Wright’s incriminating claims against the Hurricanes because they may have resulted from Sean Allen’s improperly-obtained testimony. But if Nevin Shapiro had his way, Wright never would become embroiled in this.

Shapiro never implicated Wright to the NCAA – though he allegedly accepting trips from Shapiro’s sports agency (to the Bahamas, a concert in Detroit). Why?

“Kyle got [expletive] by UM and Randy Shannon specifically,” Shapiro said, explaining why Wright was the only player he excluded. “UM really did that kid bad. He came from California and gave up a lot to do so and they [expletive] all over him. They left him to defend for himself against a clown like Randy Shannon.

“Kirby Freeman ahead of him in the quarterback competition? Get the [bleep] out of here. Kirby couldn’t beat me out and I’m 44,” claiming he out-threw Freeman in a competition on UM’s practice field. OK then.

Wright declined to comment, through his father. The NCAA claimed Wright called the NCAA to report UM; Wright told UM it was the other way around.

Jim Morris says UM is not on a level playing field with other schools in Florida because of the high cost of tuition. Hasn't it always been this way. One of the reason's UM is not a major player in baseball lately and is tied for the fewest homeruns by a school in a major conference. Maybe your eye for talent isn't what it used to be.

FSU Signee May Need Rare NLI Appeal

Matthew Thomas, a linebacker from Miami's Booker T. Washington High School, has asked Florida State for a release from his National Letter of Intent. Thomas claims he signed the NLI "under duress", which in this case was family pressure:

“What happened was on Signing Day was I wasn’t sure who I wanted to sign with. I had issues with different schools. But when I told my mom I didn’t want to sign with anybody and wait and give it a few days she said I couldn’t do that. She said, ‘FSU is a good school – pick them. It’s close to home.’ I wasn’t agreeing with it. But I felt like I was being disrespectful to her if I didn’t sign. So I made her happy.”

Thomas says Florida State's coaches have not granted the release. Issues like this are relatively rare at this level of sport. Most NLI issues for top prospects involve midyear transfers. It is uncommon for highly recruited football players to have a fight over the NLI before arriving on campus, especially when there has been no coaching change.

The article says the decision rests with the Florida State staff but in the case of an NLI, that is not entirely true. Unlike an enrolled student-athlete's request for permission to contact other schools about a transfer, an NLI release can be appealed outside of the school.

NLI releases are administered by the NCAA Eligibility Center on behalf of the Conference Commissioners Association, which oversees the NLI program. When a school denies an athlete's request for a release, the athlete has 30 days to appeal the denial to the NLI Committee. Athletes even have a second appeal, to the NLI Appeals Committee, should they still not be granted a release.

So Thomas has a number of options available to push for a release. The big question is whether his reasoning will be good enough to convince one of the NLI committees to grant him his release. The easiest solution for Thomas would be for Florida State to change its mind about releasing him, which might happen after a face-to-face chat.

If Thomas does not get his release from Florida State, his appeals are not successful, and he still decides to go somewhere else, he will be subject to the NLI's basic penalty. He will lose one season of competition in all sports and be required to sit out his first year at the other institution. That would leave him with four years to play three seasons.

In theory, Thomas would still be able to receive a scholarship and practice during that year in residence. The problem is the NLI's recruiting ban, which would prevent him from seeking out and signing with a new school, at least until he enrolled there and potentially even longer.

Someone check Thomas' navel and make sure the umbilical cord isn't still attached!

Old news for Canespace regulars ....

Vinny Testaverde will be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Terrance Sullivan

The Dude Matt Thomas wanted to go to Georgia as first priority USC as second priority. FSwho was a 3rd choice and if all else had fallen he would have settled on Miami. The guy just was saying that stuff just to keep the locals off his back.

Remains me of the olineman who faxed two sets of commitments back in 2000. Miami and UF. Miami let him out of it
