Miami Hurricanes senior WR Allen Hurns and senior QB Stephen Morris have accepted invitations to play in the 89th East-West Shrine Game. The game will be played Jan. 18, 2014, at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg.

Hurns and Morris will be the 45th and 46th Miami Hurricanes, respectively, to play in the East-West Shrine Game. Hurns is the first Canes WR to play in the game since LaRon Byrd in 2012, while Morris is the first Canes QB to play since Ken Dorsey in 2003.

Hurns, who was a second-team All-ACC selection by both ACSMA and the league’s head coaches, is currently enjoying one of the greatest receiving seasons in program history. The senior leads Miami in both receptions (60) and receiving yards (1,138). He is only the fourth player with a 1,000-yard receiving season in school history and 19 yards shy of breaking the school single-season receiving yards mark. Currently, Hurns ranks seventh in Miami history in both career receptions (119) and career receiving yards (1,867) and eighth in career receiving TDs (14).

A third-team All-ACC choice, Morris has thrown for 2,868 yards and 21 TDs through 12 games. For the second straight season, Morris has posted four 300-yard passing games. The Miami native ranks third all-time in Miami history with 7,736 passing yards and 49 passing TDs. Morris is the only QB this season to throw a 50+ yard pass in nine different games.

No. 25 Miami (9-3) will play No. 18/16 Louisville (11-1) in the 2013 Russell Athletic Bowl on Dec. 28 in Orlando. Tickets, which are priced at $77 and $82, can be purchased through the UM Ticket Office online at CanesTix.com, in-person at BankUnited Center (M-F 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.) or by phone at 1-800-GO-CANES.

Former World Series MVP and four-time Major League Baseball All-Star Mike Lowell will be the keynote speaker at the 2014 First Pitch Baseball Banquet, head coach Jim Morris announced.

Lowell, who graduated from nearby Coral Gables Senior High with a perfect 4.0 GPA, was selected by the New York Yankees in the 20th round of the 1995 Major League Baseball Draft after a stellar four-year college career. He went on to win three World Series championships – one with the New York Yankees in 1998, another with the Florida Marlins in 2003, and his final one with the Boston Red Sox in 2007 – and was named to the All-Star Game four times over the course of his career.

“I’m very honored that Mike considered speaking. He is a great representative of our city and of Major League Baseball,” Morris said. “He has reached every imaginable goal you can have as a baseball player and as a student, and he’s also a great guy. I’m very excited.”

The 2014 First Pitch Baseball Banquet will be held at the Marriott Miami Dadeland (9090 S Dadeland Boulevard, Miami, FL 33156) on Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. Tickets to the event are available through the Hurricane Club. For more information, call (305) 284-5240.

How does Henderson even get mentioned for any kind of award regarding All ACC? That is a joke, a bad joke at that. He may be a nice kid from MN, but he has not come close to the hype he came here with. I am not bashing I am being real. He has very minimal technique and fundamental skills. Something really wrong, just watch the inconsistent play and effort.

86Cane

VA...even with our current "negativity ban" it is hard to disagree with U about the OT U mentioned. Is he is living on REP alone?

Go Canes!

That one is a head scratcher.

He was a chronic underachiever. Total shame because when you watch him in games he really is incredibly gifted.

The young man has all the physical tools....technique, effort and fundamentals need to improve....but it seems like there is not a consistent effort not only to use said ability.....but to use it at a level that would stand out and be a first team AA.....a high level of total dominance regarding your opponent. Very sad....I am sure he is a nice kid....with some attitude change, effort, coaching and perhaps some fanny kicking the guy could be AA....top draft choice....the size and ability to be All Pro......you can only hope the light comes on for the young man.

VA Cane

Baseball is run by a fools. These guy are the most over paid under achieving cheats I have ever seen. I see very few HOFers around...Jeter, Mariano....I cannot name many more. The cheaters the steroid boys....you know who they are so do they...never ever should be in HOF. Baseball is awful; loved it as a kid.....boring game played by too many lousy players. God the rule about in the area at 2b is ridiculous....don't touch it you have not made an out. FACT. Collisions are part of it....get out of the way or get hit...too bad....and I do not care what Ahole gave to UM....give it back every penny a cheater a liar a roidhead....I don't want his dirty needle money. I despise the guy....take his name off UM give him his black money back....CHEATER...him Braun, Bonds Clemens they all are cheaters liars fakes despise them. Sorry for the - stuff Soup.....but it is well put and deserved.

Going down the ACC honors list, I noticed that the 33 D players included 1 from the U. Non-bowl teams put 7 or 8 on the 3-deep.

Coaches were supposed to visit LB Melvin Keihn today but plans fell through. Apparently The "U" wants him to visit in January, instead of this weekend, problem is he will be committed some where by then and does want to visit if committed somewhere else. It seems the coaches fumbled this one. Supposed big time LB and we need one. Has Miami in top 3.

Is this D. Jackson thing another Kirkland deal with Arkansas? Paper bags of SEC money?

Ohio_Cane

D Jackson shut his recruitment down and is a Cane.

jcane

Jackson covered himself, but the games for many are just starting to heat up. Some are for show, with the coaches being in the loop. Some aren't. A precious few the coaches will tolerate if in enough of a position of need. If enough games are played, but a decision is made ultimately, I'd hope the given coach plays the appropriate games in return when practice starts (going from 18 y/o star to freshman ballplayer)!

4-Real

If we can't criticize the coaches then we definitely shouldn't criticize the kids. Al Golden makes 2.4 million a year. How much does Henderson make?

jcane

Yeah, but Henderson's earning potential after the U could have been more than AG could ever have made. The question is why so much potential without follow through? I hope he gets it sorted out in the NFLU, as a few others have done over the years after underachieving in Coral Gables.

O'Donnell not far behind. A solid year!

Same for Duke....shame he got hurt, not sure it effected the last few games though.

Nice that Linder got some kudo's.

Henderson will be remembered like many others, appeared to have great potential, never achieved the level people expected. Maybe in the NFL it will show, maybe not.....

SM draft stock has dropped for sure.

Not sure how Perryman made first team, esp with the cast around him. Obviously better play than I saw on the field.

Question RE: D. Jackson 'open' status, then re-confirming the commitment after the conversation with Barrow.

As I understand this, he was playing the recruiting game, wanted to see other places, and wanted to travel. I get that and have no problem with it. As long as everyone understood this. If I was a recruit, I would want to travel and get free meals and all that other warm fuzzy treatment.

Why would the staff not be ok with him doing it, but is ok with other recruits doing it?

I've heard the argument from a buddy of mine that because of the talent level, some are allowed a little more leeway for these things. But do we really want this? Some will say some kids are worth the trouble, but that thinking, that would also mean that D. Jackson is not worth it if he is not allowed to.

How do you guys feel about this?

Ohio_Cane

30CINCO, I don't believe Barrow told Jackson he wasn't allowed to visit, etc. I think he said Al Golden's mantra: "If U are looking, we're looking, and there may not be a spot for U if/when U come back"

Sounded like that was enough to get him to realize where he wants to be and shut it down.

First off, Lombardi Award that is voted on, not awarded by the rotary club of Houston to apparently whoever they just decide they want to create it for and hand it to, goes to the best linemen of the year. Second, I can't find a winner of the 'coaching excellence' award for 2012, which means it didn't exist? Third of all; http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/12/11/miamis-al-golden-recognized-with-lombardi-award-for-excellence-in-coaching/

Comments = hilarious about 50% of the time there, my favorite is, "waynefontes says: Dec 12, 2013 7:22 AM

Not as prestigious as the “Montgomery Burns Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Excellence," but the most accurate to me is; "mogogo1 says: Dec 11, 2013 11:56 PM

A not very subtle barb at the NCAA with this selection."

Now, Seantrel, freshman AA, played hurt as a sophomore, anchored two pretty good to great lines his years as an upperclassmen, so he panned out as a five star recruit in my estimation and I'm not sure who people expect to take his place on this coaches' vote instead?

WWiM, you have to understand, for Alverage Slogan to be anything other than Alverage while he gets blown out by FSU, on homecoming, and against Duke, the players on Miami he has to coach that were left can't be good or even decent, they have to be scrubs or busts or the narrative completely falls apart and he's back to a guy who's won one more game than he lost in the per capita richest recruiting base in the nation and the game for his career going into year four at Miami with a bowl game to coach still. So, once you get to that understanding of the POV lens being applied, you understand why Alverage's own words regarding the aptitude of his players will be disregarded in certain situations like this.

Finally for now; http://emojipedia.org/?s=%F0%9F%99%8C

It's a festivus miracle emoji from Japan. Even lamer than the 2002 hand trend it's being used in place of that signaled the fall of the football program, but can't use Twitter properly without it these days!

- Before the UM/Louisville bowl game he will visit UM one more time. “I’ve been to almost all their home games this year and I’m going back Friday night for practice,” Gayot said. “I’ve visited a lot and to be honest, it feels like I’m very much already on the team. When I step on campus, all the players and the coaches know me. We have that connection and they greet me like they do each other.”

- He has close friendships with 2 of UMs commits currently. That’s another thing, I’m friends with Kc McDermott from Palm Beach Central and Darrell Langham from Santaluces,” Gayot said. “If all of us go to the same school at the same time, we would be great together. I would already feel comfortable with those bonds on and off the field.”

- Louisville has a favorable depth chart with 1 safety leaving as a senior and another projected to leave early which leaves 1 scholarship safety. UM though has his eye

- Louisville is hyping this game up as a statement fame for the program. “The game coming up, they told me they’re coming after the ‘U’,” Gayot said. “They brought up how Louisville takes all these great Florida players but I don’t really look at it like that. Miami is close by and my family could go to every home game. I would have a great opportunity at playing time with two senior safeties leaving.”

- He wants to make a decision a week or 2 after the game because he's 50/50 and with the way he's been at UM its an advantage because he cant do that with Louisville.

- He sees himself as a hard hitter at the next level. “I play the game physically and fast paced,” Gayot said. “I converted to strong safety and you need to have a presence at that position. I would pick somebody like Taylor Mays as a player I look at. I followed him at USC when he was one of the top guys.
