UM has declined an offer from Showtime to appear on a reality show modeled after HBO’s Hard Knocks, a UM official told me earlier today.

As TheBigLead.com reported Wednesday, Showtime was prepared to air about 13 episodes, chronicling the UM football program, every step of the way, from August through the end of the season.

“We talked to the production company off and on for the last two years,” a UM official said. “It was not the right time for us.”

UM rejected the offer earlier in April.

The school said The Big Lead inaccurately reported that UM has issues with the project’s production crew. UM said that was not the case.

This was simply a case of UM not being comfortable, at least for this season, with granting Showtime incredible access to detail whatever it wished about the Hurricanes football program.

As The Big Lead accurately reported, Ray Lewis would have been a producer on the project. His son plays on the team.

This administration is against anything or anybody that will give our team the exposure it needs yet everyone still wants 2 defend these bastards! Sickening!

Lurker

Wrong 4-real. Unless UM has complete trust in the filmmakers, it's a big no-go. There's just too much downside with non UM people having that much access. Every little thing would become a secondary violation. That kind of scrutiny after what we've been through is asking for trouble.

UMike

I think I agree with Lurker.. it is a little to soon to let outsiders in to film every little thing. I agree with the statement "not the right time".

VA Cane

Access after the NCAA incident should worry anybody. Access to so many proved to be a bad thing, and I think UM knows that.

Most of all, even with a storied past, I do not see why you would want to feature a program that has fallen so far from prominence and relevance. The U 30 for 30 documented all the past glory, and while the U has been a historical institution, it is past tense. 10 years have passed since those days, and while it may seem cruel, the past is old hat. The MC5 said Future Is Now, and that really does make sense.

I want to know what is going on now, why you are so good why you matter in the college football world and how you have gone about doing it. I know your past what is Now? We are trying to get to Now, to matter.

MLS and UM Stadium Update []_[] Miami Herald

Everyone is clamoring for UM to get a new stadium. Whether it be closer to campus or just a smaller venue so that the games could be more intimidating for visiting teams; many are in agreement that Sun Life is just not a great fit for the Canes. Now step in David Beckham and his possible stadium deal at PortMiami.

OFF TOPIC WARNING:

Brunei on Thursday embraced a form of Islamic Shariah criminal law that includes harsh penalties, a move slammed by international rights group as a step backward for human rights.

The tiny Southeast Asian nation began phasing in a version of Shariah that allows for penalties such as amputation for theft and stoning for adultery. Most of the punishments can be applied to non-Muslims, who account for about one-third of the 440,000 people in the oil-rich country.

Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah has introduced the law as a "great achievement" for Brunei.

"The decision to implement the (Shariah penal code) is not for fun but is to obey Allah's command as written in the Quran," he said in a speech Wednesday to announce the launch first phase of the law.

From Thursday, Brunei citizens can be fined or jailed by Islamic courts for offences like not performing Friday prayers, pregnancy out of wedlock, propagating other religions and indecent behavior.

More severe punishments such as flogging, amputation of limbs and stoning for offences such as theft, adultery and sodomy will be introduced in phases over the next two years.

University of Miami women’s tennis singles player Stephanie Wagner and the doubles team of Monique Albuquerque and Clementina Riobueno were selected to compete in the NCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Championship.

Ranked 30th in the ITA singles rankings, Wagner was one of 49 at-large selections into the 64-player singles tournament. The sophomore from Amberg, Germany, was named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference first team after posting a record of 20-4 (12-2 ACC). With an 18-4 record in dual matches, Wagner topped five ranked opponents this spring — including third-ranked Julia Elbaba in Miami’s regular-season finale.

Ranked 11th in the ITA doubles poll, Albuquerque and Riobueno were one of 22 doubles teams to receive an at-large selection to the 32-team tournament. As Miami’s top doubles duo, the pair finished the regular season with a 19-2 overall record and 10-1 mark in ACC play. This season, the pair has beaten five nationally-ranked opponents and has currently won nine of its past 10.

Sophomore Kelsey Laurente was selected as an alternate for the individual singles tournament, and Laurente and senior Melissa Bolivar were named an alternate team for doubles.

On the men’s side, senior Omar Aly was been named the eighth of nine alternates for the championship.

Aly, who has been ranked as high as No. 66 by the ITA this season, posted a 14-7 singles mark this season, with a 5-4 record in ACC play.

The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 21-26 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia, following the conclusion of the team championship, which runs May 15-20.

UMike

Its hard to renegotiate with you have no real leverage, but it looks like that might be what the University is going. As of right now, there is a fight going on about the location and other things. If there is even a stadium built, then UM can maybe leverage something if there is a REAL threat to leave, right now there is no threat. UM has it good at Sun Life anyway.

Depending on who’s talking, David Beckham’s proposed Major League Soccer stadium at PortMiami is either a “land grab” by the retired English footballer and his investors — or a thorn in the side of Royal Caribbean Cruises and its “secret agenda” to develop the waterfront, publicly owned property.

Beckham’s group and its chief detractor, the Miami Seaport Alliance, traded those and other barbs Wednesday during a debate at the Downtown Bay Forum. It was the first time the two sides went up against each other in public, instead of on television.

If Beckham and his investors really intend to privately fund construction of a $250 million stadium to be used about 25 times a year, then they must plan to make their money by developing the remaining port property, argued John Fox, a Royal Caribbean lobbyist who heads the alliance.

“Either they’re bad business people, or there’s something else going on,” he said. “We think this might be a land grab.”

Miami Beckham United has said it could oversee the development of the entire, 36-acre port property after building a 25,000-seat stadium on about 12 acres, though the county would be able to bid the actual construction work to outside firms as well.

The group’s lobbyist, Neisen Kasdin, tried to turn the tables on Fox by suggesting Royal Caribbean, with its port headquarters, must have a “secret agenda” to develop the site itself. Port administrators had envisioned a major commercial development on the property.

“Sometimes where there’s smoke, there’s a smoke machine,” he said.

The Seaport Alliance, which includes cargo interests and auto magnate Norman Braman, unveiled a collection of television and radio ads last week comparing Beckham’s stadium to the unpopular ballpark deal for the Miami Marlins. The Latin American Business Association has signed onto the coalition, as have 11 mayors from cities across Miami-Dade County, including Homestead, Coral Gables and North Miami Beach.

With Beckham’s group pledging to pay for stadium construction and to pay a market-rate lease for public property, the soccer debate has centered instead on where a stadium could go. (The group is seeking a state subsidy that acts like a sales-tax rebate.)

As alternatives to the port, the group has mentioned sites next to Marlins Park, by the airport’s Intermodal Center and at Florida International University. But County Mayor Carlos Gimenez is still in talks with Beckham’s representatives over a potential port deal.

“The port does not have to be the site, but it has to be downtown or near downtown,” Kasdin said, citing the success of other MLS teams such as Seattle and Portland.

Fox scoffed at the suggestion, noting that most MLS teams play outside of urban centers and adding that the league doesn’t have a high enough profile to merit more prominent locations.

“This is not World Cup soccer. It’s not FIFA soccer,” he said, referring to soccer’s world governing body. “It’s usually on ESPN4.”

MLS fans were quick to note on Twitter that there is no ESPN4, and FIFA doesn’t actually run a league (only tournaments like the World Cup). Kasdin said Beckham is joining the league as a franchise owner in part to elevate its profile.

But Fox’s broader point was that the port is expected to grow its cargo and cruise business in the future and could find better uses for its southwest corner, which is too shallow to accommodate large ships. Cargo containers could be stored there, he said — and was promptly rebuffed by Kasdin, who said such a sight across from downtown would be an eyesore.

Royal Caribbean is the only major cruise company against the stadium because it’s interested in maintaining its favorable rent terms at the port, Kasdin said. He questioned the firm’s commitment to Miami, given that it recently moved some ships to Port Everglades.

Carnival Corp. and Norwegian Cruise Line have stayed out of the stadium controversy because of their own downtown interests, Fox countered.

Carnival’s owner, Micky Arison, also owns the Miami Heat, which is trying to extend its county lease for AmericanAirlines Arena. Norwegian’s top shareholder is Genting Hong Kong, part of the Malaysian-based conglomerate that includes Resorts World Miami, which runs a gambling ship out of PortMiami and hopes to build a casino resort at the site of the old Miami Herald building.

Im just tired of hearing and reading excuses. Going back to the end of the Coker years we have pretty much sucked and its getting real old. We are hoping for 9-10 win seasons instead of expecting them. This staff has absolutely ZERO excuses left to burn. Plenty of teams lose their QB's.. its not like we had an All-ACC QB returning lol....Im not a Golden hater nor lover, Im somewhere in the middle I guess. I think he should of let D'No go and I think he has been more of a salesman than a coach. But he has also done really good things here. But none of it matters if he cant win.

UMike

I think what UMike meant was it offers plenty of viable "excuses" to let Golden off the hook for this year AND previous years lack of performance by the team?

This.

UMike

I just want my Canes back... is that to much to ask? The Canes that actually blow out the teams they were suppose to beat, not the Canes that lose 1-2 games a year to the likes of UVA, WF, Duke, Maryland etc. I want the Canes that shuts down All American players, not the Canes that turn average players into All Americans. I want the Canes that ALWAYS played their best on the biggest stage, not the Canes the get embarrassed every time they are on national tv in big games.

UMike

Also.. Williams going down might be a good thing for UM. Obviously, I dont hope any kid gets hurt, but if Olsen or Kaaya is REALLY the future of this program it could be a blessing.

VA Cane

I don't think we need a program similar to Hard Knocks to get exposure. I did not care for that kind of stuff, and I do not care for insiders or outsiders knowing all of my business and ways. The only people who know my info is my team, coaches and parents. I am hush hush with the directors of the league, other coaches, even the HS coaches around here. I like all of them, and I am very polite. I just keep my distance, and am considered a lone wolf; a nice guy who is focused. I keep my plans and specs close to the vest. I share more on here than anywhere, and I have decided this year I will simply tell you the outcome of games. My philosophies have been expressed and probably repeated far too many times, so we will keep it to W-L. I would not want Lurker to be upset, questioning and concerned, so practice, drills, ideas, concepts, new schemes will not come up at all.

AG and staff have QB and defensive concerns that need to be worked on. They will need to focus on these issues. The last thing they need is attention diverted from important issues and people who are looking to cause trouble for them. One final thought regarding exposure and attention: Winning solves everything. JMO

SOUP, I dont like the Golden lovers because they ALWAYS have some sort of excuse lined up to protect him. When something is bad, its bad, call it like it is, dont dig and search for some excuse to make it right. It like those parents whose kids are NEVER wrong and they will fight you to the end about it lol

I like Golden more than I hate him... but I lost A LOT of respect and faith in him when he didnt fire D'No and then had the nerve to say the D was tending up.

I havent really knocked Golden and this staff in a long time around here, and Im no trying to.. but they got to show something this year. QB or not, they got to show something.

BEERicane

Here are some words to live by:

It is much more powerful to be for something than it is to be against something.

SOUP

BEER...I like it! Can I have another?

VA Cane

Thanks Soup, thought you would like that. It sounds cliche, and for some maybe it is. I found out long ago as a player and coach that winning makes everything else pale in comparison. Critics cannot say but so much if you win.

Not only do my kids do the winning, they are winning in life. We did a quick tally of grades, and my incoming team looks to have about 3.27 GPA. I think I will have 2 kids picked in the draft; Morgan Moses OT UVA maybe a first rounder with Carolina looking at him as a need position. I am very proud of my gentle giant. He is a kind, soft spoken, character individual who has done well. Thats why we have meetings with players Lurker Cosell, to know what is going on in our small world and the big world beyond!!!!!

Win everyday; Life Family School Football thats my goal and definition of winning. If you win in those 4 aspects in a hard, fast, and clean way, who can question you? Well, other than Lurker....I'm just saying....

30CINCO

What is the criteria for a Cane to be considered a Cane?

Player : Is it the moment they sign? Do they have to be here atleast 1/2 years? Do they have to be in the rotation? Are walk-on considered Canes? Do they have to be good?

Coaches : Moment they sign? Do they have to win? Minimum time here? Are coaches that are fired considered Canes?

As a "realist" U should already know that this year is NOT the make or break year for Golden and crew. If U don't U are just setting yourself up for disappointment. That is NOT to say that the Canes should not win in 2014, I think they will win at least 9 games, win their division of the ACC and be ranked in the top 25 even with the tougher schedule. But to expect an ACC title over FSU, a top 5 ranking and one of the eight playoff spots MAY not be doable this season.

But DON'T U worry IF after the 2015 season he ain't "shown something" then all bets are off. The five year plan, or "process", must be reaching completion (ACC title, a playoff spot and/or championship) or at least be VERY near completion during year 5.

Unfortunately, neither U or I have gotten our wish. But trust me, if I could make it so I would have done so long, long ago.

So now we sit around in our rocking chairs and we choose to "trust the process" until it works or we simply can no longer trust it.

Be back around soon, got to go sniff more underage jocks on Twitter so I can be the fifth person on here to repost from one site to this one because that's what I'm here to do, in between pretending to be a new poster here when I'm anything but . . .

Posted by: SOUP | May 01, 2014 at 11:10 AM

I think I am at that point now.

VA Cane

I think there have been a lot of reasons for the demise of the program. To use excuse for all of them is not correct. My first team at age 19 I had a good group of kids who were talented. They needed some discipline and coaching of fundamentals but were good. We went 7-0, won the playoffs and SB. First Year Champs. It took me several years to get back to the SB, struggle to get in playoffs. So I understand.

This disease has eaten away at the UM carcass for a long time. We peaked against Nebraska. The next year the players went through the motions, overlooked OSU and got beat, not cheated...that is an excuse. Coker was not the guy to reign them in. He was a terrible recruiter, and the guys got fatter and lazier until he was clinging to the job. RS came in, and it was doomed to fail. He was not a HC at all, he did not like a lot of people, and a lot of people did not like him. He was a PC hire and though he tried hard, it just did not work. He was a terrible HC and he recruited people he liked because they liked him. He played people off each other, he had a revolving door of coaches, the administration was not so fond of him, and as a HC he was bad. Players were bad players over rated under skilled and not developed. The fault of all, not just RS. Then you get the NCAA stuff, average players, good ones going to the good schools, a whole new staff, the stadium situation.....and losing. bottom line is this:losing makes bad things worse. It can also motivate you to great heights.

2002-04 fought against the odds through the lean years and with such talent they overcame. So far, the talent level is not there, the U is not back, and has been off the radar for 10 years. We do not matter, we are not a premier program, and we are not in the mix for any kind of title...yet. I think that is the perception.

I do not know the alternative. Fire everyone now, start over? No. Demand a title this year? Not Happening. See improvement, start winning the bigger games, keep recruiting and get the fans to see it and come out? Yes. I will try to be optimistic and hope for these things. I want these guys to succeed.

VA Cane

Bottom line is this: we have to get better and we need to win games. All games matter. There are some games you have to win, and others you cannot lose. We find a way to drop that ball. It is going to take a huge effort from all involved to get there. We must work hard. Win and things just seem to work better!

Terrance Sullivan

Great blogging peeps. I agree with the sentiments stated above especially Soup.

Go Canes

Well said VA Cane.

SOUP

Preach on, VA Cane, PREACH ON!!!

That was a seriously good sermon right there.

U just got an AMEN from the congregation.

UMike

I waiting for the excuse/explanation that goes like this.. "well, me and my buddy D'No aren't really skilled in the art of building and/or running a successful defensive scheme"...that excuse I will buy! haha

VA Cane

Thanks GC...I have to look at it this way. Do you just clean house, fire them all, alienate the kids and destroy the progress that has been made? I am the first to say we need to get better; we do. We need to be fundamentally sound. Thats the foundation, the support, the building block.

I have to say we did win 9 games. We did not play well in the last 3, or the bowl game. We did not. The passion, hunger, tenacity, aggression level or whatever you want to call it has to go up in a positive way. It has to be players, coaches, and all involved. Not an angry, bitter, or hateful path, but rather a positive, uplifting, growth path that spreads in a strong way to all involved.

"Crack the sky, shake the earth" take it all in as one mentality. It can be done and I am going to look at it in the most positive light I can. This game is not easy, but rather a challenge thrown down at the feet of the mightiest of men. You must step forward and not be given a reward, but rather earn it. When you do, it is the greatest reward in sports.

I respect Lebron J very much, but he said our game is the greatest game in the world. I think football is the greatest game and the rewards of being the best in football cannot be matched. JMO

VA how good is Josh Sweat? Clowney good? what are our chances with him?

Terrance Sullivan

Well said VA

VA Cane

I think he is very good, and with good development of his skills and body combined with continued stress on fundamentals, he can be a very good player in the U mold. I saw him when he was younger and not developed; he is quite the opposite now. I have a good buddy coaching down there and SK sees most of the good ones play. He says the young man is very talented and can be a very good college player that will get better. He is undeclared; I hear his name a lot around the state via people I know. would be a very good Cane.

hassan

Thanks for the scouting on Sweat, for those not into recruiting he is about the top recruit in V.A. and is a big boy 6'5 and long and a hell of a motor, kind of reminds me of our commit Patchan.

VA Cane

I think we have more of a mental block than a physical one. Yes we need to get more aggressive, stronger, meaner. We have to get hungry for competition. I do think at times these kids feel that pressure of being the U. That is not easy. 5 NCs, great All Americans, legendary coaches, trend setters in so many ways, so many All Pros.....there is no stairway to heaven, though Led Zep differs....there is a stairway to the NFL....if you want to get there via hard work and sacrifice. Its UM football. We have a block in the mind blocking our stairway to success right now. I think it takes a great mind to let these kids know you do not have to be that U....nobody can.

Be the New U.....MC5 song Future Now be the future of U football now by being you, working harder than ever, total sacrifice. All as a unit it can and will happen...Coaches, staff, players, administration, fans. Clear that block in the mind. Live now, not 83 to 2003....be the new U. I am pulling for the boys with all I can muster!!!

Ohio_Cane

Sweat is not interested in us from what I understand. We have offered, though.

Ohio he has a Whos Who list of offers. A lot of them are names for names sake, not so much for content as in the past.

The big boys are Bama, LSU, FSU, Ok, Clemson, GA, Ohio St, Oregon, Mich St, UCLA.

He has been offered by ND, UNC, South Carolina, USC, PSU, Pitt, MD, Nebraska, Temple, Old Miss, Old Dominion, Temple, VT, TN, Wisconsin, UF, Mich, U Mass, NC State, TX AM, UM. The top 10 schools have the best shot from my sources, but he has not committed. some of these also rans are reaches, but you never know, he may end up anywhere right now.

VA Cane

He is a big kid, strong, athletic and pretty fast. He has a great first step of the ball, quick, and closes on the ball well. Use hands pretty good. I like that aspect of his game. He plays against good competition, and should be a hot item.

He is a lot like Clowney except one thing: he has a 426 Hemi Sprint engine and never takes plays off. I really liked Clowney when he started playing. I do not care for his attitude and work ethic at this time. His head is big. Great possibilities, but he will find out you dont just strut into the NFL, pop the hatch and say here I am.

We may get to see Sweat. I do not know, but have heard from some in the VA Beach area his leaders are VT and FSU. Not confirmed but a couple guys have told me that. We will see.

Ohio_Cane

Oh ya, Sweat has an offer from pretty much every school in the country.

If they haven't offered they either will or haven't because he said "I won't come there even if U do offer".

I don't see a "Clowney clone" so to speak, but he probably should be top 3 in the country, regardless of position.

VA Cane

I think Clowney is one of a kind physically, but is there a brain in that head? I wonder whats in the water at USC.....probably water, fish s**t and toddler piss pumped in from Myrtle Beach so it numbs the brain. Clowney has a great potential, but he has been looking in the mirror too long; he likes himself a whole lot. Hope he gets himself ready for a different level of competition. He wont have those easy Sports Center opps like the one tackle that made him a big name. We will see.

SOUP

Cool, thanks guys.

The Hurricanes have made the most of in-state talent this spring. Several Sunshine State prospects picked Miami over other top-tier options in April.

Running back Dexter Williams (Orlando) committed to head coach Al Golden one week after visiting the Gators in Gainesville. Jordan Cronkrite (Miami), a 4-star athlete who has the makings of a standout safety, decided to stay home despite offers from Alabama, West Virginia and Clemson.

Defensive end Scott Patchan (Tampa) spurned offers from Florida State, UCLA and Stanford to join the Hurricanes' class. Miami added impressive tight end Bowman Archibold (Dade City), weeks after he added offers from Auburn, Oregon, Penn State and USC.

Golden reached beyond state borders for talented offensive tackle Hayden Mahoney (Malvern, Pennsylvania) in late March.

Hmmmm, that doesn't say bomb "threat", it says bomb "scare". Does that mean there's something suspicious and not just a call telling them there is a bomb?

Anyone think the coaches turned down the Showtime gig?

If I had to guess I'd bet it was the administration. They have to be so gun shy of any exposure they can't control right now.

The Herb has been quiet for awhile reading but not posting. I do want to make a few comments about our 10 year D-mise. Goldie is not a bad recruiter, just not at the level I would expect. There are still to many recruits heading North, that we shouldn't be losing. getting one out of every five keeps stunting our growth or trending back up. We still lose games to teams that shouldn't be on the field with us. We don't blow teams out like we used too. Over the years , yeah we've had a coaching carousel and that doesn't help with stability but then again, it's been that way since the Herb has been a fan. We don't develop talent like we used to or should I say maybe we don't motivate the talent we do have. We do need a stadium, that's smaller in size and closer to campus but of course we used to go into our opponents stadium and make it our own and that doesn't happen to much any more.
It's sad to turn on the T.V. and see a half empty stadium when we play at home and then you turn on a SEC game and it's packed to the rafters. These ain't the old days, kids want to win, they want to play and they love eye candy. We can't get away with we are the "U" and when we show up your azz is ours anymore, we aren't feared. We still are a team that people love to hate but it doesn't help our cause when we get blown out and that too has happened way to often lately.
Golden, should of fired DENO but that's old news, so we have to hope a miracle happens, lord knows we are due for one.
We also haven't developed our QBs. Okay they've had their moments but none have been consistently good. now we have to start a R-Shirt, so what, how many times did it happen in the 80's, Walsh, Kosar, stepped right in but that was when we played to win, not to lose. All The Herb knows is I'm tired of waiting for this dam black cloud to lift. I'm ready for the worm to turn!

Ppfffft! Here it is!

Yes and I cannot blame them for steering clear of such unnecessary hype. Too much has happened; we got by with some luck regarding the NCAA. It will not be lucky next time. No need to push the limits or test the waters. You know they want to nail us for something. I just think that kind of program is bad business. I really do not care for it anyway.

I think Winston has been one big fraud. He's been caught stealing twice now. After hearing all the evidence, others talking, the cover up and other stuff, is there any doubt he raped that girl? He is not so down home squeaky clean as portrayed by that school. He may be a good athlete, but I would love to see his grades. I mean his real grades not what FSU records at the Registrars Office.
The whole thing has a bad cloud over it; the truth has been concealed. JMO

Both David Thompson and Jim Morris expressed a greater deal of optimism in a return for Thompson than originally thought.

SEC game? How about SEC Spring Game? Thats the hurt right there. Alabama, LSU and well all the big teams that are contenders they pack the spring game. Its a big thing now and lets face it the kids love it.

Like I said, the winning may not pack the spring game, but it will solve a lot of problems. JMO
