Even with Sun Life Stadium upgrades appearing more likely than a year ago, the University of Miami remains very interested in sharing a stadium with David Beckham’s MLS team if Beckham’s group determines it’s feasible.

An MLS source said a joint UM/MLS facility remains a “real possibility” that interests Beckham, and Beckham’s people are still studying financial and traffic issues before coming back to UM with details and a definitive answer.

Problem is, a high-ranking Sun Life Stadium official who’s directly involved said Dolphins and stadium owner Stephen Ross is opposed to allowing UM to escape the final 18 years of its lease to move to an MLS facility. UM hasn’t asked yet, because it’s premature.

Since everything is negotiable, I believe a UM/Sun Life settlement is possible if MLS deems the project do-able, even though Ross has told people he’s adamantly opposed to letting UM bolt its lease.

If the stadium is built at PortMiami (Beckham’s preferred site), traffic would be a concern for UM games because some cruises leave on Saturday afternoons. UM also wants to make sure there’s adequate parking. Beckham’s group is trying to formulate solutions on both issues.

UM isn’t unhappy at Sun Life. But several high-ranking UM officials love the MLS stadium idea because of the appeal of a smaller venue (with 40,000 seats) with better atmosphere and sight lines and closer to campus, according to one of those officials. UM also would consider an MLS stadium near Marlins Park, an option Beckham’s group has considered.

UM has publicly confirmed its interest in potentially sharing a stadium with Beckham's team and is awaiting word from MLS on the feasibility.

Ross declined to comment when asked if he would allow UM to escape its lease. But a source close to him said he would have no incentive to do so.

What if UM offered a lot of money? “They don’t have a lot of money to offer,” the Sun Life source said.

That’s not necessarily so, UM people tell us. A person involved in the negotiation of UM’s Sun Life lease said a negotiated settlement is do-able and UM could come up with a sizable amount, especially if Beckham charges UM much less than Sun Life does. UM pays Sun Life between $4 million and $5 million per year from a split of ticket and suite revenue, parking and concessions and a maintenance fee.

If UM wanted to leave with 15 years left on its lease, that would project to about $67 million. But a buyout would be somewhat less factoring in net present value, a UM source said.

UM president Donna Shalala, who is intrigued by the MLS idea, ultimately would decide if the benefit of the move would offset the buyout cost --- something that cannot be known until Beckham’s group gives the go-ahead and tells UM what it would be expected to provide financially.

Ross has expressed skepticism about MLS’ chances of getting a stadium, especially at PortMiami. “I don’t believe the University of Miami would try to leave because it’s not in their best interests,” Ross said.

If MLS deems the UM idea feasible but Ross balks, this would get fascinating. Would Shalala appeal to Ross publicly or privately, saying he could be viewed as a hero by UM fans if he allows the Canes to leave but would be disdained if he doesn’t? It would be interesting to see if such an approach, and a hefty payout, could persuade Ross to change his mind.

Terrance Sullivan

Just like Miami will make 5 million plus off the FSU game this year and all the other games will be profit. I know its the dead time of the year and sports writers and media people need something to pass the time so we have to read that bullcrap.

CaneRock

Terrance, a UM/MLS stadium near Marlin's Park isn't a bad idea. But I agree, that 40,000 seat crap ain't gonna cut it.

CR, but you gotta give Silver some credit bro. Look at all these MFers making $$$ while NOT doing their jobs *cough, cough, Mark D'Onofrio, cough, cough* and tell me not to give props for getting the job done. It also sends a message to owners in the future, watch out for Orlando Magic owners next. That being said, getting rid of Sterling isn't going to cleanse America of racism. UMike

I think Silver deserves some props here. I agree he was kinda backed into a corner, but still he could of went softer and didnt. He showed he had a pair and laid down the law. And while he cant "forcr" someone to sell, they sure can pressure the hell out of them. I think the other owners can vote on it, but not sure how it works. At least he is out of the NBA.

IDk if we play at The Traz... if it aint the OB it really doesnt matter. I would like to stick to one place and try to build some history there.

UMike

And although Sterling probably deserves worse, this is about the max the NBA could do. The NBA has known about this guys for YEARS and turned a blind eye, most likely because the Clippers sucked 99% of the time. This just happened to become very public. Silver did what Stern should of done a long time ago. Hopefully now we can stop talking about it and move on the what is a great first round of the playoffs.

Totally agree 100%. Where is a direct quote from a UM source? There is none because it is BS. The PortMiami site is a nightmare traffic wise and no closer to UM than Sun Life. The site near Marlins Stadium does not really exist, there is no land there so that is a farce.

Yes Sir My Good Friend 86. I totally agree my friend.

UMike

I dont see the big deal about Sun Life, its not a bad stadium. Maybe because it the the place right after the beloved Orange Bowl so some fans just hate on it. I love how easy it is to get in and out. The jumbo screens are nice, tailgating is great etc. I would welcome upgrades, but am perfectly find going to Sun Life to watch my Canes, half empty or not.

86Cane

UMike...some people just never learn to appreciate what they have and ALWAYS want more or something better. Sun Life is FINE with me!

UMike

The only thing I will add is that it will help if we start winning. Get more people there, better feel etc. I would understand if this was a small college town, or if we were the only show in town etc, but we will never be. We are the U because we are different. Sure it would be cool to have 110K like Michigan or Penn State, or packed stadiums every week like the SEC or Big 10.. but this is Miami. I will gladly give up packed stadiums to be a part of the U Family.

OK, some numbers: lowest paid (what counts) attendance @ home last season - 42k for Sav St. FAMU drew 50k. Wake! drew 66k. Even VA, after 4 straight losses, drew 44k! Who in their right mind would consider a stadium that could only sell 40,000 tickets??

I dont think think there was 42K for the SSU game or 50K for the FAMU game... no way lol.. not sure how they get those numbers, maybe they include give aways or promotion tickets never used etc, but no way there was that many people in seats or those games

Sunlife isn't a bad stadium at all. The problem is when a 17 year old kid gets a tour of the gorgeous on campus facilities at schools like Clemson, Bama or FSU it makes a difference, especially if they go on a game day.

The experience is completely different and does have an impact on recruits.

UMike

Go Canes that is how it has been for the last 50 years and we have done ok before, even with way worse facilities.

Lurker,

someone on here said you are a black cloud. Now I say it. You are the one guy we do not need to be here. Everything you say is an argument or a put down. You really contribute nothing to the conversations you just try to start arguments. To make matters worse you co wrote the book with Cosell "I Never Played The Game". It shows as you know nothing about the game.

I coach 13 year olds that all live in my direct community. I have developed a mentor system with the parents and children. Our practice field is centrally located as we all live within a couple miles. I had my kids and their parents come as several parents and kids had called me about the racial situation regarding the NBA. Rather than talk to a few, I reached out to all as they look to me. It was not mandatory, but I told them it was important. It was a great thing and it sets an example for a community. The racial problems of this country are huge, but to solve it we must start at the grass roots with those of us who have lived and seen it, and with our future who may solve it: our youth. I care about my players and their families as people first; this is the bond I have worked hard to develop and consider it important. You can write another book about life and show that you do not know it either.

Lurker why don't you go back to the FSU or UF blogs and lurk? or better yet to the campuses so you can continue lurking around the coeds windows at night?

We do not need you here any longer so you need to leave.

Joe Robbie/Pro Player/Dolphin/Sun Life Stadium
Miami Gardens, Florida 5

UMike

Go Canes... didnt Sun Life host a super bowl just a few years ago? And the NCAA national title game a year or two ago? Miamis last great run from 99-03 came when the OB was a dumb and Sun Life was hosting super bowls and bowl games etc.

UpNorth.. Miami will NEVER have the game day atmospheres of many programs, but we never have. There are less people at UM games, but I bet a stronger bond. If our recruiting depends on our stadium or facilities we might as well stop playing now haha... at least we made a good step with the new uniforms. That is something we can control and it helps with the young kids.

Miami hosted Super bowls in 1999, 2007 & 2011... so they havent even sniffed it huh?

I mean, I can 100% understand how a kid goes to the Auburn-Alabama game and is blown away, I get it... but they has ALWAYS been that way. Miami got top kids cause they wanted to stay home and be a part of something special which is the U Family, or out of state kids that wanted to join also. Not because the stadium was full every game. Im sure we miss out on a couple recruits a cycle because of this, but I think that is how it has always been.

Some Florida lawmakers are calling for a controlled bear hunt after two recent high-profile bear attacks.

WTVC reports that 12 Florida state lawmakers have sent a letter to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission’s executive director Nick Wiley asking him to consider a controlled bear hunt in regions of the state where bears are concentrated in residential areas.

Brodeur was alluding two recent bear attacks that made national headlines. The first occurred back in December when Susan Chalflant, 54, was mauled by a young black bear while walking her dogs. Chalfant sustained several severe injuries to her face in what state officials have called the worst attack in the state’s history.

The second incident occurred earlier this month when Terri Frana, 45, encountered a few hungry bears her home’s garage. One of the bears dragged Frana by her head out of the garage. Frana managed to escape, but sustained moderate to severe injuries to her head and body.

Florida black bears were listed as a threatened species in 1974, but their numbers have since surged. In 1974, there were less than 300 black bears in the state. Today, state biologists estimate there are 3,000 bruins roaming Florida.

There is no Super Bowl in the near or relatively distant future for South Florida.

So no, they aren't sniffing one right now.

UMike

My point, Miami made great runs when the OB was a total dump and had horrible facilities while Sun Life was hosting big time games. We MAY lose out on a guy here and there, but that will never, ever change and has always been. New stadium or not Miami fans will simply NEVER fill it unless its a big time opponent or we are winning big and a top 5 program... and even then its not a given. People just need to get over it already.

Go Canes

Winston arrested for stealing crab legs?

Really?

Go Canes

I'm not changing my argument. They've already awarded superbowls through 2018. They're on the outside looking in for 2019.

So at this point we are looking at almost a decade without one, with no prospects of getting awarded one in the foreseeable future.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (CBS Tampa/AP) — Florida State’s Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Jameis Winston reportedly was issued a citation for shoplifting crab legs, but the Tallahassee Police Department has refuted that they issued the citation.
Tomahawk Nation reports Winston was caught shoplifting at a Tallahassee Publix and issued a citation by the Leon County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff’s office will be holding a 2 p.m. press conference.
“He got an adult civil citation,” a Tallahassee police source told Tomahawk Nation. “If he completes the sanctions it will never show up on his record. They commonly give them to juveniles on first criminal offenses. They are now doing it for minor misdemeanors for adults to lower crime rate.”
The Tallahassee Police Department says on Twitter, though, that Winston was not cited by them.
“In response to recent requests: TPD has NOT had any contact with Jameis Winston regarding an alleged recent citation,” the department tweeted.
