I remember the testing of air raid sirens every Saturday afternoon.

This article makes me far more jealous than any football tailgate party ever could. If I ever make it back doown to SoFL again, it will be for this kind of thing. If you live in FL and aren't doing these kinds of things, you should rethink your situation. Unless you have allergies, you might be doing it wrong.

I'm so Miami...

I was born at Doctor's Hospital right next to the UM campus.
I remember being three years old and afraid like hell when Hurricane Betsy blew by in 1965.
I remember the parade for the Dolphins undefeated Super Bowl team down Flagler Street when I was 10.
I grew up in the Calle Ocho area before they called it Calle Ocho.
I remember when Kendall was all tomato, corn and strawberry fields.
I remember when South Beach was old and decayed and nobody wanted to go there.
I remember going to the Orange Bowl with my Dad in the early 70's and watching Otis Anderson and Chuck Foreman play.
Heck I even remember when English was still the official language en la ciudad of Miami!

I'm so Miami...

I remember Hurricane Donna literally "ripping and wrapping" a chain link fence like a paper towel roll at Hibiscus Elementary school in front of my house.
I remember going to the Orange Bowl with my Dad and brothers and watching George Mira, Sr. throw bullets around the field.
I remember going to Jahn's Ice Cream joint on Collins Ave. in North Miami Beach and trying to finish a "kitchen sink" with my friends.
I remember my Norland Viking football team falling one game short of the State Finals in 1972 losing on a snap exchange fumble in the final seconds on a go ahead TD from the 1 yd line in the Orange Bowl.
I remember being in class at the U with Otis Anderson.
I remember working out on a Universal weight machine in the P.E. gym at the U with Tony Cristiani, cause there was no "Varsity" weight room. (Talk about "no facilities.")
I remember sailing Hobie Cats off of Haulover Beach.
I remember the 1979 Dadeland Mall murders that finally cemented my wife's and my decision to NOT start a family in Miami and move to SW FL.

Kansas State finished 2013 winning six of its final seven games, including a win over Michigan in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl. Asked about his optimism heading into his 23rd season at the helm, the 74-year-old Snyder said it changes all the time.

“My degree of optimism is negotiated daily, and the mantra of our program has always been centered around that daily improvement,” he said. “When we make daily improvement, then I become a little more optimistic. When we don't, obviously, I don't. I think my major concern is always young people taking things for granted.

"I say young people — I probably can reference everybody in our program — is not taking our performance level, our talent level for granted, not taking the preparation for opponents for granted, not taking our workouts during the course of the summer for granted. … I would share a fairly high degree of optimism for today, but tomorrow's a new day and we'll see how that goes.

Snyder joined the Big 12 back when it was the Big Eight. The rest of the conference has had nearly 50 coaching changing in that span, but Snyder turned one of the worst major college football programs into a consistent winner over decades. Why did Snyder choose to stay in Manhattan? It’s something he figured out as a young coach.

CaneRock

Snyder is the Popovich of CFB.

Georgia Tech dismissed three players on Tuesday who were already suspended for the first two games of the 2014. Sophomore receiver Anthony Autry and redshirt freshmen defensive linemen Darius Commissiong and Travin Henry were dismissed from the Yellow Jacket football program. A fourth player, starting corner Lynn Griffin was suspended for two games for the same rules violation.
Autry is the biggest loss of the group for the 2014 team. Autry was in the two-deep at wide receiver behind starters DeAndre Smelter and Michael Summers. Commissiong was a third-string defensive tackle with some upside while Henry had yet to find a role switching between wide receiver, linebacker and defensive end and not cracking the three-deep at any of those positions.

Griffin's absence for the first two games is a bigger blow. The Jackets are extremely inexperienced at corner with D.J. White and Griffin as the only players with game experience at that position. Converted safety Chris Milton, early enrollee Step Durham and Lamar County twin freshmen Lance Austin and Lawrence Austin will battle for the starting job in fall camp while Griffin is suspended.

Another issue for the Jackets with Autry's dismissal is his highly coveted brother Myles Autry who is a 2014 signee who has not been able to report yet due to a NCAA Clearinghouse issue. The younger Autry was projected to be in the mix at A-back and as a kick returner. He is technically limited in his options unless head coach Paul Johnson releases him from his Letter of Intent. Myles had a cryptic tweet after his brother's dismissal was announced.

I'm so Miami, I'm still mad @ George Teague stripping the ball from Lamar Thomas during that sugar bowl against Alabama.

The Dude

Something that bugs me about sports. Why all of the lies about height and weight? Hurns was listed at 6'3" when he was here, but in reality, he's 6'1". Perryman is listed at 6'0" but is more like 5'10" and some change. Especially in football where you will be going to the combine. They will take an accurate measurement and they will report that number. Wouldn't it be better to show up taller than listed rather than shorter? Why does Miami condone this also by putting it on the website rosters and media guides? It makes no sense to me.

-The Dude 6'1" 7/8 (Not 6'4" in a helmet and cleats)

Nash...

Just when you thought the Miami Hurricanes 2016 recruiting class couldn't get any better, it did.

On Tuesday, Wellington High School athlete Ahmmon Richards committed to Miami adding to the already stellar class the Hurricanes have put together.

"Miami really caught my eye with all the love they showed and how they do things. They have had a lot of recruiting momentum lately and that's just really cool to see them getting all of these guys. I had to be a part of that," said Richards.

"I'm just real excited about all those guys. Miami has done a great job."

Now, Richards says it is his turn to find some guys that he wants to bring to Miami with him.

"I plan on getting on YouTube when I can and watch some of these guys' highlights to know who I need to recruit."

While Richards is very versatile and can play safety, he says he has committed to Miami as a wide receiver and would compare his playing style to AJ Green of the Cincinatti Bengals.

"I would say I compare to him because of my ability to go vertical and go make a great play. I've got some speed and I know I have great hands. I'm explosive and the other defense knows that I can make a big play anytime."

Even though it's early on in the recruiting process and Richards fields offers from the likes of Tennessee, Ohio State, Louisville, and Georgia to name a few, he made it known that he is 100% committed to the Miami program and is ecstatic about the future.

"I knew it was time for me to commit. I got that urge and that feeling and I knew I had to commit to become a Hurricane."

One of Wellington's assistant coaches, Chris Forte, described Richards a little more from a coach's viewpoint.

"As a player, he is a sponge. He soaks up everything you say and that makes him very coachable. He is very explosive and is a playmaker who can score anytime the ball is in his hands," said Forte.

"As a person, He is quiet but leads by example. Family is very important to him and will do anything you ask of him. I had him playing outside linebacker his freshman year because I needed him on my defense. That's the kind of kid he is," Forte added.

He got skills, great spot up shooter, good off the dribble and can play D. They usually put him on the other teams top guard so he does a lot for them.

If it was a straight up trade, Golden State should absolutely do it. The issue I think is the "package" Min is looking for.

WWIM

Question for all Florida natives.

What makes athletes in Florida so different than every where else? Is it the weather, the water, the sun????

UMike

WWIM.. its the mentality..its just like basketball up north. Its swag and bravado, they play to be somebody, its more than just a game. So hard to explain, but its truly just different. Anyone who ever played street football in Miami can tell you how different it is.

The Dude

After coaching in Florida for a few years, I will say the kids play with a chip on their shoulders liike nowhere else. I'm talking about 10 year olds with something to prove. And its 95% of them. They have a fire in their bellies. You don't have to coach effort into them at practice. They just bring it every down, every rep. Its not just the inner city kids either. The country boys are that way too in Florida. I would take my 13 year olds and play a JV HS team from Cali where I grew up playing, and I'd wager we would have beaten a good chunk of them. We were certainly faster and meaner.

j.w.

WWIM- opportunity to play year round is huge, as is the huge population and relatively easy travel. You can't play outside in the northeast or midwest for months at a time, and not everyone can afford indoor training there. Not a problem in Florida. Plus, the weather helps traveling, you'll never have to worry abotu transporting through a snow storm, sleet, etc. And with tons of kids playing, competition forces the best of the best to keep striving.
Here's a comparison: In Southern CA, baeball and softball teams just thrive at the youth level. They don't have many cold days, and it is one of the most populated regions in the U.S. Northern CA weather isn't quite as nice, there aren't as many people, and you see a lot fewer college-level prospects.

KYcane

cant go to the GT game all locked down.. right??? lol

On the ACC All Preseason team there were 26 selections for Offense, Defense, and Special Teams. FSU led all teams with 9 players, followed by Duke with 4 players, followed by a tie with Clemson and Virginia Tech with 3 players followed by Miami with 2 players, rounding off the list of North Carolina, Louisville, Virginia, Boston College, and Syracuse with a 1 player each. Interesting.

TSully...every time I try to watch any college football show on ESPN for any amount of time at all I get ill from their complete slobberfest over the SEC. They debated for WEEKS if the SEC was going to have one or TWO teams in the 4 team college playoff this season. They practically fell all over themselves trying to find possible reasons or ways it could happen.

It is horrible and sickening. All of the reporters at ESPN from media types to former players and coaches all act the same way and toe the company line (ESPN = SEC) like well paid little robots.

That was a good article on the decline of playground basketball...I remember we used to live at the park in the Summers. Another thing I'm noticing, is the kids that don't have scholarship prospects at bball, are turning to football. For example, Ereck Flowers...if I read it right, He didn't really pick up football, till His 9th or 10th grade year...Swoope never played organized football in HIS LIFE!, and now He has a good chance at making the NFL!...and before Jimmy Graham put on pads at UM, the last time He played football was in the 9th grade!
