Not sure if this was posted....Ariz...

**Florida State has made a major move with JaQuan Johnson after his visit there last week. FSU had never really been a true contender for him before the visit, but that has changed. I'm told that Johnson was feeling the environment in Tallahassee. Tim Irvin remains a key to Johnson's recruitment. Irvin will be visiting Miami again once the coaches get back in town.

**Nobody would be surprised if Mark Walton were to decommit from Miami at this point. As I've posted for about a month now, Miami has recruited him as a 2016 kid and have been content with their current hail at running back for the 2015 class. Miami obviously wants Walton, but the uncertainty of his reclassification status has made makes the situation tricky. Also, I'm told that reports that Golden was not answering Walton's calls were false. "Golden doesn't reject people's calls."

**I reported last week that the Cronkrites would be meeting the staff this week to work through any lingering issues, but that meeting has not happened yet because Golden wants to be in town for it. This is still expected to take place soon and things continue to trend upward as far as the chances Cronkrite stick. Ohio State has been persistent in trying to get Cronkrite up to visit during the summer, but still nothing has been planned.

**Over the past few months, I have not been shy in saying that Trayone Gray qualifying would be a long shot. Over the past month though, Miami had changed their tune to "cautiously optimistic". Now, they are full out expecting not only Trayone Gray, but Darrell Langham to both be here by the start of camp. I'm not sure I can put into words how big of a pull Gray would be. The guy is supremely talented but some schools stayed away because of grades issues. This would be one of the great gets of the Golden Era.

**Carlton Davis is set to announce on August 12th. Davis is near the top of Miami's board at corner and they are absolutely enamored with the physicality he brings to the position. The thought of him lined up opposite Artie Burns is scary. As far as Miami's chances, I'm told that he has not made his decision yet but the Canes are hopeful.

**Look for Miami's newest 2016 commit Ahmmon Richards to play defensive back here.

**Reminder that Tallahassee Godby OT Brendan Loftus will be announcing his decision next Tuesday at a school ceremony. Miami remains the favorite. Other top targets at OL are Jalen Merrick and Bar Milo. Miami has a good chance with both at the moment.

UMike

4.21 seconds and 40.5 inches: Senior wide receiver Phillip Dorsett’s team-low average 40-yard dash time, which broke Sam Shields’ team record (4.26). Dorsett, who was the fastest Cane last year at 4.29, ran 4.16 on one of his heats according to UM. Dorsett also had the top vertical leap on the squad (40.5 inches), blowing by running back Duke Johnson (36.5) and receivers David Njoku and Herb Waters (35.5).

362 and 318 pounds: The power-clean marks hit by running back Gus Edwards and left guard Jonathan Feliciano (362) and safety Jamal Carter (318). Each set a new high at their position. Edwards broke Willis McGahee’s record (unknown), Feliciano set a new record at his position, and Carter topped Sean Taylor (308). Edwards and Feliciano’s 362s were the best power cleans on the team – Edwards also ran a very quick 4.58 average in the 40, with a top heat of 4.49. In the power clean, next in line were defensive end Anthony Chickillo and right guard Danny Isidora (352), defensive end Ufomba Kamalu and linebackers Raphael Kirby and Denzel Perryman (342). Freshman linebackers Darrion Owens and Juwon Young (332) were after that. Carter tied right tackle Taylor Gadbois and rush end Tyriq McCord at 318.

605 pounds and 4.49 seconds: Perryman’s team-best squat max was the best of any linebacker in program history. Perryman (6-0, 245) also had the third-fastest 40 among linebackers, with a 4.71 average. He finished behind junior Raphael Kirby (4.64) and sophomore Jermaine Grace (6-1, 210), who blazed his way to a 4.49 (with a top run of 4.43). His average was eighth-fastest on the team, behind Dorsett (4.21), receiver Herb Waters (4.39), Johnson (4.42), receiver Malcolm Lewis (4.43), cornerbacks Corn Elder (4.46) and Antonio Crawford (4.47) and receiver Stacy Coley (4.48).

From ESPN Bills Blog

Undrafted rookie linebacker Jimmy Gaines received some first-team reps in team drills in place of Nigel Bradham, who stepped in with the second team for some parts of the drill. Gaines made his presence known on one play, diving to break up a Manuel pass to Brown in the flat. The Bills are trying to piece things together after losing Alonso for the season, and Gaines is the latest player in the mix. The favorite, and the most experienced of the bunch, remains Bradham.

Quick Monday morning UM update:

The Jake Heaps/Kevin Olsen quarterback battle will be the most fascinating story of UM camp, with Heaps' starting experience at BYU and Kansas giving him one clear advantage.

Freshmen Brad Kaaya and Malik Rosier will be given a chance when practice starts Aug. 5, but it would be very surprising if either starts Labor Day night in Louisville. Al Golden will cut the quarterback competition from four to two fairly early in camp, and Heaps and Olsen are front-runners to be those two.

UM expects Ryan Williams to be back at some point this season but genuinely doesn't know when that will happen. Williams keeps saying he's targeting September, but that would be far sooner than players typically return from ACL injuries.

Couple comments from Heaps from today's conference call:

### Heaps said "it's absolutely vital" he wins the quarterback job. "I didn't come here to be the backup. You have to come and earn that. Nobody is going to give that to you. I have the ability to perform to the level this team needs."

### "I'm a pro style quarterback, a drop back quarterback. I can read defenses extremely well, manage the game. My strengths fit really well with what we're trying to do here. [Offensive coordinator James] Coley's offense is a true pro-style offense. I feel good about who I am, feel very confident in my abilities as a passer."

### What does he need to improve on? "When the pressure is coming on, making sure I'm making the right decision. I'm definitely not a runner, but I'm confident in my abilities in being mobile and moving around in the pocket."

### UM "was a situation it was too good to turn down [with] the personnel here and how talented they are. This receiver corps is extremely strong."

### "I've been here since the end of June and engrossed myself in football. I've stayed in the dorms, studying football 24/7. I feel very comfortable with where I'm at. I've been here [in the football building] as much as I possibly can. The only time I go back to my dorm room is to sleep."

### Heaps, who transferred from Kansas this off-season after the Jayhawks changed quarterbacks and offensive style, said: "It's been vital to show [UM teammates] what a hard worker I am. The only way I can gain their respect is" through work ethic and "show these guys how much I love the game and be out here every single day."

### Heaps, on Al Golden: "I wouldn't say it's a disciplinary style. But doing things the right way is how I would describe it."

### Heaps, on UM's freshmen quarterbacks: "Brad is more of your true drop-back passer. Malik is more throwing and running. Those guys are going to be good here."

The hunch here is if Heaps and Olsen are comparable in August, Heaps would have the edge because of experience, especially with such a difficult opening game. But Olsen could win it by clearly outplaying Heaps in August. We'll see.

CaneRock

Grantham seems like an aggressive DC...I can see a screen or 2 going for big gains. And if our line can give whomever's under Center AT LEAST 3 seconds, were in business. Either way, we gotta make em' pay for stackin' the box with the pass game, and/or, we gotta make em' pay for playing 6 or 7 in the box with the run game. I prefer the latter...throw to run.

Ohio_Cane

Get the ball to Duke & Coley in space. That should be this year's game plan. I'm all for it.

86Cane

Rhuh-Rhoo...the water, it IS rising:

Eight of the top 10 U.S. cities that have seen an increase in so-called “nuisance flooding”--which causes such public inconveniences as frequent road closures, overwhelmed storm drains and compromised infrastructure--are on the East Coast, according to a new NOAA technical report.

This nuisance flooding, caused by rising sea levels, has increased on all three U.S. coasts, between 300 and 925 percent since the 1960s.

The report, Sea Level Rise and Nuisance Flood Frequency Changes around the United States, also finds Annapolis and Baltimore, Maryland, lead the list with an increase in number of flood days of more than 920 percent since 1960. Port Isabel, Texas, along the Gulf coast, showed an increase of 547 percent, and nuisance flood days in San Francisco, California increased 364 percent.

“As relative sea level increases, it no longer takes a strong storm or a hurricane to cause flooding,” said William Sweet, Ph.D., oceanographer at NOAA’s Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS) and the report’s lead author. “Flooding now occurs with high tides in many locations due to climate-related sea level rise, land subsidence and the loss of natural barriers. The effects of rising sea levels along most of the continental U.S. coastline are only going to become more noticeable and much more severe in the coming decades, probably more so than any other climate-change related factor.”

86Cane

FROM ESPN ABOUT GUESS WHO (SEC):

Nick Saban likened the debate over uptempo offense and defense in the SEC to “Democrats and Republicans ... who controls the House and Senate.”

After hearing from 12 of the league’s 14 coaches on ESPN’s campus on Monday and Tuesday, it’s clear the argument might be gridlocked.

Ole Miss Rebels coach Hugh Freeze, a proponent of uptempo plays, says it's a means by which his team can offset a deficiency in talent and five-star recruits.

“I don’t want it to be a game to be won on signing day,” Freeze told me Monday, “that your three-deep is better than my three-deep.”

Of course, Saban understands what those teams are trying to do in negating disparity in talent and depth.

But he said those no-huddle offenses “take the defensive coaches out of the game" by making it impossible for them to substitute. Saban also argued that uptempo play doesn’t allow for actual coaching or instruction, something he finds important in the sport.

“I never want to run a system on offense that doesn’t help a player develop,” Saban said, referring to a criticism of “continuous play.”

And Saban again cited safety concerns, saying the added number of plays per game amounts to three additional games per season. The more plays, he reasons, the more chance there is for injury.

So, when does this become something more than an ongoing debate?

Bret Bielema (D-Ark.) said he anticipates some sort of rule change in “the next 2-3 years.”

Go Canes

Ohio I think Yearby and Waters can do almost as much damage, with Dorsett keeping them honest downfield.

UMike

I got a kick out of Saban saying on ESPN that there doesnt need to be any more policing of college football smdh lol

CaneRock

And between PD4,Waters, & Coley...ain't no way IN HELL! that Coley can't deplete the box to 6 or 7...Duke & whomever else shares the load, should have a FIELD DAY!...you hear me...FIELD DAY!

Terrance Sullivan

Honestly if the competition close let Heaps start until Williams comes back and in games like FAMU and Arkansas State U can play Olsen, Kaaya, Rosier and make sure our guy Gray Crow throw a few halfback passes. Go Canes Charlotte or Bust,

86Cane

I agree with you mostly TSully. Here's how I see it:

1. Start Heaps or Olsen and see what happens when Williams comes back from injury.

2. By game 4 U will know IF Heaps or Olsen can do the job. If so stick with them, if not them Williams comes in to the rescue.

3. I would like to see Kaaya and Rosier redshirt this season. UM is not going to win the National Championship this year but could in 2015 or 2016. Let Olsen, Kaaya and Rosier and battle it out NEXT year.

Soup I can dig that and agree my friend. My goal for the OB situation would be for Heaps/Olsen to navigate us through the Louisville* must win conference game, home games against FAMU and ArkSt. both must winnable games, and then at Nebraska where we have a 50/50 shot at winning would be nice to win that game but want cry if we don't nonconference and as U said we aint winning the national title so whateves on that game. Hopefully Williams will be back and ready to go September 27th at home in a huge division/conference game against Duke and the following week in a division conference game in Atlanta against Georgia Tech. We need to win the ACC Coastal, We need to win 10 or more total games outta 14 games, We need to win our Bowl Game. I say 11-3 and set the table for 2015 and beyond.

I think where Heaps has the edge, is He has experience spreading the ball around in ACTUAL games. Watching the Spring Game, seemed to me that Olsen was locked in on Malcolm. Only thing with Heaps though, is I haven't seen many (any really) deep balls on His HLs. But Coley needs to do what He has to do to win, Rosiers athleticism at the QB position is too good to pass up. If we have to play one Pro-Style QB, and one athletic QB...SO BE IT!

LOL... hard to go wrong with THAT offense!

HOWEVER, we have SO MANY WEAPONS on offense now, we can spread the love around!

CaneRock

TOP is a factor...

"How can it be?

"The clock stops when a pass falls incomplete. It keeps moving when a run is stopped for no gain. Both results are zero yardage, yet, the pass kept the ball for five seconds while the run kept it for 40."

"If a team that passed only but never completed a pass, played a team that ran only but never made a first down, the result would be a tie, and both defenses would have been on the field for the same number of real minutes. Yet, if both teams ran the same number of plays, one would have a TOP 8 times that of the other."

"TOP is meaningless. It has nothing to do with keeping your defense, or their offense, off the field. It has nothing to do with anything meaningful. It is for writers and readers who feel precise, when a 36:07 is compared to a 23:53."

"TOP is NOT important, SCORING & turnover ratio is."

I understand his point BUT the correct way of saying this is that TOP is LESS important than scoring and T/O ratios.

EVERYTHING matters, some things matter MORE some matter LESS. Nothing is irrelvant. In terms of winning football games it is TRUE that scoring offense, scoring defense and T/O margin are MOST important than any other stats. TOP and penalties are less important when determining winning teams and winning games, but clearly they still matter.

NICE!

Go Canes

Even with a decent QB we will be fine offensively.

The only way to know for sure is to take ALL the data and do an actual correlation analysis. The rest is mostly supposition, guesswork, and anecdotally based, although some of the stated presumptions may very well be true. The analytics will always give a more reliable result.
