Now go out and Keep It Simple.....Just Win Baby!!!!

Thanks Al Davis!!!!!

I just hope that RoachCane77 notices the title?

raizecane

lets hope he sticks with Miami.....

WWIN

Listening to Golden's interview the other night, he sounded happier than he's ever been!! Everything I heard about camp was positive, didn't have to motivate players to compete and give 100%! Sounds like the team is ready this year!

CaneRock

SMDH...obviously, marijuana use hasn't hurt the NBA as a global brand, why does Goodell think it'll hurt the NFL's...

#Protect The Shield...yeah right.

Ohio_Cane

WWIN, don't let Milo's comments hurt U too much. He's also said in the past that he wouldn't commit without talking it over with his parents. He wouldn't have committed if they weren't on board.

Now, if/when UCLA or USC offers, we'll have to hold them off.

The Dude

I'm so jacked about Monday night when we smack Louisville. Al Golden has shown he has the critical trait to win at Miami... he develops players. Now we just need to hope sticking with No'D pays off, I'm counting on it.

UMike

### Even though Al Golden and defensive coordinator Mark D’Onofrio are friends, associates say Golden bristles when anybody uses that word in discussing D’Onofrio’s work. That happened today on Orlando Alzugaray’s show on WQAM.

Asked about constantly having to defend his friend, Golden said: “I don’t classify it as my friend. At Virginia, we went from 108 to 17 in defense.”

By the way, Golden told Alzugaray that Brad Kaaya has “moved from a manager to an attacker.”

### One huge key is whether the defensive tackle group of Olsen Pierre, Calvin Heurtelou, Courtel Jenkins, Earl Moore, Anthony Moten, injured Corey King and Michael Wyche (when he gets in better shape) is better than last year’s group of Pierre, Curtis Porter, Justin Renfrow, Moore and King. One UM official said he believes it is, but we’ll know a lot more Monday.

It’s telling that Porter wasn’t invited to an NFL camp, and Renfrow was cut by Arizona this week. Other Canes cut this week: offensive lineman Tyler Horn (Tennessee) and defensive end Adewale Ojomo (Dallas).

### Couple other UM items: Good to see Jacksonville Jaguars and undrafted UM receiver Allen Hurns leading the NFL in receiving yardage in preseason (230, on 13 catches). Nobody is even close to that…. CBS announced it will air the North Carolina-at-UM basketball game on Feb. 28… A UM official doesn’t expect former basketball player Rafael Akpejiori to be able to help much this season, even with Beau Sandland leaving. He’s behind at least four tight ends on the depth chart....

Enjoyed seeing the Najeh Davenport documentary on the UM football program that debuted at the O Cinema in Wynwood tonight. The film --- a fun trip down memory lane --- chronicles the 1999, 2000 and 2001 teams and is cholk full of interviews with the key figures from those teams and game footage and videos filmed by players during that impressive run. The film, available on theureloaded.com, is worth the $20 DVD cost if you're a hard-core Canes fan.

Among the notable sound bites from the film: Ed Reed and Bryant McKinnie recalling how they went to then-athletic director Paul Dee to strongly encourage him to promote Larry Coker after Butch Davis left for Cleveland.... Brett Romberg and other players recounting the pre-Sugar Bowl street brawl between UM and UF players. Vince Wilfork emerged from a New Orleans voodoo store to join in.... Coker trying to persuade players to return in 2002, only to learn some of them had just bought expensive cars.

A bunch of former Canes showed up at the premiere tonight, including Phillip Buchanon, Mike Rumph, Jerome McDougle, Gerard Daphnis and former running backs coach Don Soldinger.

I love that the article trash talks Miami to the very end and then uses a quote from a High School coach in the last paragraph to explain Miami's side.

Yup, that publication has always had it in for us.

Nice to see others starting to hate on us tho. Those "other" coaches hating means we must be doing something right.

Golden told them to get their licks in while they could during the NCAA investigation. Now that the gloves are off, it's payback time!

Ohio_Cane

Canes were off yesterday. Hoping we hear some good things from practice today! Like OL starters. KC at RT is my guess on that competition.

Hoping Jamaal Carter cements himself at S, too.

UMike

I think the safeties will be Bush and Crawford with Carter seeing a lot of time as well.

UMike

I dont think you can go wrong with any combination of starting safeties at this point

It's just the same as if your teenager is dating somebody you consider trash. If you tell them you disapprove, you worry that you're just driving your kid deeper into that trashy embrace. So instead, you just say, "you're young. Just keep your options open." You hope that the kid grows out of it.

Two-way player: Jaquan Johnson, a U.S. Army All-American who has orally committed to play for his hometown Hurricanes, will play safety and also be part of the offense this season for Killian.
ANDREW ULOZA / FOR THE MIAMI HERALD
By Manny Navarro
mnavarro@MiamiHerald.com

As a high school football coach, Cory Johnson has gotten used to receiving plenty of text messages at all hours.

But when his phone goes off after midnight, he doesn’t even need to check the caller ID. He knows it’s the kid who takes the game home with him, eats and sleeps it and sends him a text to let him know when he’s hitting the gym in the middle of the night.

“If I get a text at 1 a.m., it’s usually Quan telling me he’s going to work out or he’s seen something on film he’s picked up on and wants to talk about,” said Johnson, entering his sixth season as coach at Killian.

“He’s a passionate kid. But more than his talent and more than his passion for the game, he studies and knows the game and takes the game home with him, which is something a lot of kids don’t do. That’s what separates them at this level and every level.”

Quan is 5-11, 192-pound senior safety Jaquan Johnson, a four-star recruit who orally committed to signing with the University of Miami last week.

Florida State, Alabama, Florida, Louisville and LSU were among the dozens of college football powers who hoped to sway the U.S. Army All-American. Florida might still try to before he signs on the dotted line and enrolls in Coral Gables in January.

But for now, Johnson has pledged his allegiance to the hometown team for one big reason. The Hurricanes make him feel like family. And that’s big for Jaquan, because family has meant a lot of different things to him through the years.

The fourth of seven children raised in what he calls “a little house” in Homestead, there were a lot of days Jaquan would open the refrigerator and would have nothing to eat. His only meals, he said, were the free breakfasts and lunches he would get at school.

“My mom tried her best,” Jaquan said. “Even if we didn’t have food, she would give up eating. People think, ‘Oh that was tough.’ But we really didn’t think of it like that. I just thought it was normal. I thought it was life.

“Now looking back, it wasn’t normal, but it was the way we lived.”

Jaquan, though, no longer lives with his biological parents. He and his siblings have been spread out in different homes since his parents had their home foreclosed a few years ago.

Johnson lives at “Coach’s” house. That would be former flag football coach John Phillips, who has known Johnson since he and Phillips’ son, Trey, became best friends in the third grade.

Back then, Phillips saw the financial struggles Johnson and his family were going through. So he always made it a point to provide help for Jaquan, whether it was giving him money when he needed it, feeding him, giving him his own bed to sleep on or even taking him on family vacations.

Legally, Phillips is not Jaquan’s guardian. But since Jaquan was in the fifth grade, Phillips said, he has been on his emergency contact card and the person who has signed any important paperwork he has needed.

“A lot of people say [it’s another Blind Side story],” said Phillips, 54, who has his own law practice in Miami. “But it’s not that. I didn’t go out and see some poor kid struggling on the side of the road I didn’t know and take in. This kid was just always part of my family, and we’ve loved him.”

Said Jaquan: “I couldn’t have a better figure in my life than Coach. His wife, Hope [Phillips], Trey and Savannah, they treat me like family. I have my own room. And I eat every night.”

As happy and as fortunate as Jaquan feels to have the Phillips family in his life, the burning desire to take care of his biological family has not faded. He still talks to them every day and loves them very much.

“When I play, I notice that’s the only time I get to see my family come together and be happy,” Johnson said. “ I don’t want to disappoint them.”

Coach Cory Johnson sees a lot of similarities between Jaquan and former Florida State safety Lamarcus Joyner, a second-round pick of the St. Louis Rams in May. Johnson coached Joyner as an assistant at Southwest High.

Like Joyner, Johnson said Jaquan is very bright. He has a 3.4 grade-point average, scored a 24 on his ACT exam and can see things on the field only most coaches can see.

Last year, Johnson said Jaquan picked up on something eventual state champion South Dade did by putting their receivers in motion, and he pointed it out to coaches in film study before the game. The Cougars ended up picking off four passes that night.

“He makes the players around him better, and when I talk about Lamarcus, that’s the quality they both carry that is unprecedented,” Johnson said. “He and Lamarcus can both make kids believe they are better than what they are at that time.”

A three-time All-Dade first-team selection, the Cougars started 1-3 last season without Jaquan as he tried to recover from a back injury. When he came back, they went 6-1 before losing to South Dade 13-7 on a muddy field in the second round of the playoffs.

The back injury, Johnson said, was the result of too heavy a workload his first two years at Killian, when he combined for 139 tackles, seven interceptions 1,063 yards rushing and 27 touchdowns. Last year, Jaquan played less on offense but still racked up 75 tackles, one interception, five fumble recoveries and had eight catches for 122 yards and three scores.

Jaquan said his back still tightens up on him every now and then, but it’s much better than it was.

“He’ll play a little more offense this year,” Johnson said. “But, really, we just want him to be our Troy Polamalu, our Ed Reed back there.”

The injury, Jaquan said, opened his eyes up to the fact football won’t be a part of his life forever, and it’s motivating him to be the best he can be in all phases.

His coach has no doubt he will.

“One thing I know about Quan is if you put the ladder up six feet higher than he can reach, he’s going to find a way to climb it,” Johnson said. “He’ll go as high as he can to get to the top of that ladder. Special kid.”

Sure wish marriage was like recruiting. I would love to be committed and get away with leaving my options open.

Yeah, I remember seeing Patrick Johnson (before he changed his name to Patrick Peterson) throwing up the U, too. And there was NO WAY we were gonna miss out on Bryce Brown, until we did.

I've got plenty of other things -- like actual college football -- to think about between now and National Signing Day. Assuming his name is on the list on NSD, I'll be super-excited then.

I hope Quan gets his back healed up. I always remember T-Mac and how his back gave problems. He was never the same player afterwards for the magic or rockets

I'm sure he is a great kid, but the caveat is the limited information anyone on this site can have.

Adults with experience know that putting this kind of faith in a 16 year old teenager is a fool's errand. I follow recruiting with that state of mind. Some work out, some don't. Basically as long as we sign a lot of top rated recruits, doing our due diligence background checks, then I'm good.

So far, Golden has done well in this respect.

Nothing personal, but I won't "trust you" until the kid is signed, contributing, and staying out of trouble. This is true of any potential recruit.

CaneRock

Between Lamar Miller,Michael Irvin, & the positive energy around the program...JJ & TI will be Canes!

This cant be good for recruiting...

LOS ANGELES -- USC senior running back Anthony Brown called head coach Steve Sarkisian a racist and quit the team Thursday.

Brown posted on Instagram Thursday morning, "Sark treated me like a slave in his Office...Can't play for a racist MAN!!!!! #Fighton" and posted a similar message on Facebook.

The posts were later deleted.

Sarkisian said he was blindsided by Brown's comments and said Brown never expressed any of those feelings to him when he met him earlier this week.

"As far as what [Brown] said on Twitter, I think it's ridiculous," Sarkisian said. "Any of you guys that know me and if you ask anybody in our building, any of our players -- feel free to -- that's about the furthest thing from the truth. Quite honestly, I'm shocked."

Brown did not mention specifics about why he felt this way or what might have occurred between him and Sarkisian.

He has been sidelined most of training camp with an hyperextended elbow and was listed as the sixth running back on the depth chart after switching over from cornerback earlier this month.

"Anthony decided not to play football anymore," Sarkisian said. "We obviously tried to encourage him not to quit. We thought he could be an asset to our team, especially when healthy. We really tried to make it a point to accommodate the position change he wanted. He wanted to move to running back and we did so.

Alabama, Miami Jump in the Race for 2017 Georgia QB

The ‘Noles and the Buckeyes weren’t the only schools handing out offers to underclassmen recruits.

According to BamaOnline’s Charles Power, Alabama offered Powder Springs (Ga.) McEachern quarterback Bailey Hockman.

Hockman—the son of McEachern head coach Kyle Hockman—also picked up an offer from Miami.

The Crimson Tide and the Hurricanes join the likes of Florida State, Tennessee and Oklahoma State as early offers for the 6’2”, 210-pounder. Hockman attended summer camps at FSU and Georgia.

According to Chip Saye of The Atlanta Journal Constitution, Hockman threw for 302 yards and four touchdowns in McEachern’s 52-49 loss to North Gwinnett in the Indians’ season opener. As the leader of a loaded Indians squad, Hockman’s offer list should continue to swell over the next two seasons.
