IT'S GOUDIS!

Hurricanes kicker Matt Goudis, a junior who hit 13 of his 17 field-goal attempts last season, said he is feeling better after injuring his back this summer, forcing him to “miss some time in the weight room and running.’’

Goudis said now that he's back, he needs to build up his legs again.

“I should be good to go and back by Louisville,’’ Goudis said of the Sept. 1 opener. “From missing some running, my legs are just a little tired, not as explosive, but I’m still hitting from 50. In four more weeks I should be good to go.’’

Lots of scuffles today. First day of pads and we got us some COMPETITORS on the team!

Courtel Jenkins vs Corey King and Ryan Mayes vs Braxton Berrios

LQ

What are we the gators ? How does 2 tackles fight

Ohio_Cane

@ChristyChirinos: #Canes OC James Coley said it seems at times like Brad Kaaya is 30...mature, not making freshman mistakes.

Ohio_Cane

@DavidFurones90: Heaps with a 99-yard TD deep over middle to Malcolm Lewis. Two standouts in fall camp for #Canes

VA Cane

Kaaya and Heaps looking real good; I love competition at QB. Williams on shelf, that leg will take longer than expected to heal, it will not be ready for a lick. If I am playing against him, you find a way to test that leg, make him run out of pocket, throw on run, make mistake....and see if it can take a hard wrap tackle.

Olsen is in the rear view mirror; either sits or goes. If all bodes well, the competition gets tougher next couple years; he is out in the cold as there may not be a place for him.

We hit this morning; had some scraps after whistle. We did the Okie drill, and Bull in the Ring...lot of people do not like that, but if done fairly its a great reaction drill. We are very strong and physical.

The thing I like most is that there were no cheap hits, grabbing, clutching or head down hits. My guys are very skilled at the blocking and tackling....can you say FUNDAMENTALS...and are aggressive....combine that with talent quickness and speed...and TEAM we are very good. Should be a good scrimmage on Tuesday.....cannot wait to lower the boom on the other team. I saw them practice on way home....they had pads on, but were dragging....not in shape at all. Coach told me lots of guys out of shape, over weight. I told him it takes time; thought under my breath they are like you fatso, out of shape big time.

Little does he know the Apocalypse Now game that he is going to feel on Tue. No Mercy for him. When I moved down here, he wanted me to help him. I saw how he does kids....grabs shakes F bombs......Not part of my game. He whines to the refs all game. Good players but hold heads down....intimidated by a loudmouth overbearing guy who thinks its still the 70s. He won some titles in his day, but he does not know how kids are; you got to change with the time.

Sorry guys, you feel the wrath on Tue we will be there to punish you. I watched them through binocs for 20 minutes today.....they are a mes.....long day for them Tue!!!!!!

VA Cane

0: Heaps with a 99-yard TD deep over middle to Malcolm Lewis.

that does not bode well for the D secondary....somebody was saying how awesome they are.....hmmmmmmmmm cannot let them behind you. Make that mistake now and learn from it, cannot happen in game. Should NEVER happen; thats why we practice.

Mountain Cane

That's the problem with scrimmaging. If defense shuts it down, you think the offense stinks. If O lights it up, defense is suspect.

VA Cane

Well it is hard to say if you have greatness on both sides of the ball; I do with my guys I have great players after each other. We learn from the errors so that both sides are aware of what needs to be done fundamentally. You do hate to see people get beat like that, but it happens.

When you play another team, you have to know what their sets schemes tendencies are and work to stop them accordingly; thats the importance of the scout team and scouting in the season. You know a team likes to throw the bomb, or blitz corners on 3rd and long and you get beat or sacked; thats when you get pissed cause you knew a tendency and still failed to stop it.

That is poor prep fundamentals and scouting. I like what I am hearing though;especially out of Heaps and Kaaya. If they can keep improving, and we play some D ( we played in the FL game, after that it was all downhill we were horrible about the worst in nation and worst Canes ever....nothing to write home about) we should have a good year against a good schedule.

The Dude

So many things happen during a practice that we don't know that its so hard to draw conclusions from them. For instance a 99 yard TD throw. What was the coverage? Maybe there was no safety help. Was it a great throw or a great catch and run? Did the corner slip? It will probably be in the highlights soon enough though.

Yep. UDay usually gets us at least one.

I'm hoping it's Strowbridge. Ryan Bartow put him on "commit watch"

Mountain Cane

I've been of the view that if Kayaa performs as advertised, he will get the starting job. If you go heaps/Williams(if/when healthy)we'll be in the same boat next year with a started with no or virtually no game experience.

I'd rather see Kayaa get the nod unless he is clearly not the best. Let him get his experience with Duke and dorsett while both still here.

Ohio_Cane

I also expect a commitment from Kaaya's former teammate, OL Bar Milo

CaneRock

The thing with RSing Kaaya this season, is you'll have NO QBs with game experience next season...unless we get a graduate transfer.

And IMO, Olsen looks like He's "checked out", His prospects look shaky next season...hell, they look shaky NOW!

longtimecanefan

The more reps kaaya gets the faster Olsen bails....

if they red shirt kaaya soon (or he knows it will happen) then Olsen might stick around....

besides, we still have Gray Crow!

NY Trooper

If you have been following any Nebraska news the past week, you would know that their defense has taken a hit injury wise. During the past week they have lost a starting DB, LB and nickel back. I would never wish injuries on an opponent but I think the outcomes against Louisville and Nebraska will have a substantial bearing on whether we have a successful season.

VA Cane

I RS Rosier, I think Kaaya will be the guy; Heaps looks good though.Either way someone has to step up now.

Williams has this year and he is done; it does us no good for him to be back next year and like I said any DC worth his salt is gonna pressure hit test punish him. Williams has limited playing time since he came here; Memphis is a long ways back now. I like the kid a lot but I got to do what is best for the program, not how I feel emotionally.

We win this year we can add a lot of good kids "supposedly solid Canes" (reality not hating) next year and really take off. We put a juggling clown act on the field at QB (Williams? Olsen? Kaaya? Heaps? Rozier? hell maybe The Crow? which ball is which which is in the air?) we struggle, we really cloud the water for the future.

I like Kaaya and think he plays; Heaps may see some action, Williams may get the mop and bucket but no push for more eligibility, Olsen gets the warm seat, the showers or the door. He is not ready for UM QB; he should consider transfer, counseling, getting straight and playing somewhere he can adapt to and still succeed.

VA Cane

QB is becoming more and more the key to success for us as it is murky but getting clearer.

The OL must be solid. We have to be mean ass angry run blockers, aggressive bust chops pass blockers, have the foot speed and leg action active....no shuffling of the feet get them up!!!!.....and good wind...no fat ass bellies. We have had good lines but they have to step up especially with QB situation. Love great OLs!!!!!

If that line does as I say, we can run, QB will be confident and have loads of playmakers to light it up!!!

Only other concern....the entire D.....we can fine tune it based on specific stats but lets face it....we are not going to jump form 116 to 1....is a dream. Just improve...pressure QB, tackle with shoulders and drive not grab, cover TE, get up on the WRs more man and be aggressive not passive!!!! The D is my concern as QB looking better!!!!!

CaneRock

Richard McIntosh is 6'5" 268.

I started walking towards the new Schwartz building and taking pics and here comes Brad Kaaya and Standish Dobard walking out the doors, I felt like Go Canes lol! So we took a pic and had a nice lil convo walking back to our cars, they were parked right behind me. After the talk with Kaaya, I definitely wouldn't be surprised if he starts now! Pretty cool first time experience to UM for me!

Ariz:

The Work 8-9: Fall Camp Edition
**Starting with the position that has everybody's attention, it is apparent that this is a two-man race between Jake Heaps and Brad Kaaya, which is not necessarily a surprise. The surprise has been Kaaya jumping out to what some believe to be a lead for him in the competition. As I have said for some time, Miami was going to give Kaaya a legitimate opportunity to win this job and so far he has seized the chance. There is no doubt that Kaaya is the most physically talented quarterback on the roster, but his exceptional pocket presence at this stage of his career is what has caught people by surprise. His command of the offense has also been a major part of his early success. By no means has Kaaya won the job yet, but he could be on his way to doing that if he keeps it up. Heaps has not been "bad" as some reports suggest, but Kaaya has just been flashing more ability than him, while being more consistent as well.

**One of the top things that has stood out early in camp is the team speed on the defensive side of the ball. "The defense is freakishly fast right now," a source said. The versatility and speed and linebacker and safety will give Mark D'Onofrio more creativity than the last 3 years.

**Coaches are absolutely thrilled by the depth and progress of the safety position. This is the deepest they have been since 01-04. Marques Gayot has carried over his summer performances and continues to impress. "He's a killer," said source. Dallas Crawford is also picking up where he left off in the spring and will be a nice piece for D'Onofrio.

**The Booker T. Washington freshman duo of Chad Thomas and Demetrius Jackson has lived up to any and all expectations that were had of them before camp. Chad Thomas is blowing coaches away through week 1. I would not be surprised to see him start come the Louisville game. Demetrius Jackson is ready to contribute as well. He is up near 240 and has retained his explosive ability that got Miami excited in the first place. He will most likely see the field situationally this year and has potential on special teams as well.

**Rashawn Scott and Malcolm Lewis are two receivers that have shined this week, which is a very good sign for this offense. Scott seems locked in and is in the best physical shape of his career at Miami. He is up in weight from last season and carrying it very well. Lewis is 100% back from his ankle injury and has probably been the best WR from the 1st week. Braxton Berrios will not be redshirted. James Coley will get him involved. Great week for him with several highlight plays.

**There was talk back in the Spring about Juwon Young being physically ready, but not having it upstairs yet. It seems like he has already improved upon his spring and looks adjusted to the tempo of the college game. Darrion Owens is building on his strong spring as well.

**There was a rumor before camp began that Anthony Chickillo had a serious foot injury, but if that is the case then it is not showing. He has been excellent. A consistent year from him would do wonders for this defense.

**Standish Dobard appears slimmed down and has been impressive catching the ball. Would not be surprised to see him on the field more than Sandland this season opposite Walford.

**Trayone Gray is every bit of the 220 that he weighed in at. Miami got a huge steal with him. He has worked primarily with the running backs. His hands are not consistent enough right now, but when he has touched the ball he has shown his special ability.

**Quick recruiting note - Carlton Davis will be announcing his decision on Tuesday night on the SFHSSPORTS Gridiron Report on 560 WQAM, the same show that Sam Bruce chose the Canes on. Miami has been on the physical DB hard and is one of the staff's favorite prospects this cycle. Miami has a good shot here. He is choosing between the Canes, Ohio State, and South Carolina.

@TitoBenach: Just spoke with #Canes Commit Mark Walton, says he will know on Monday officially whether he will be apart of the 2015 class or 2016 class.

### I spoke to a bunch of Hurricanes recruits at today's annual high school football media day at Sun Life Stadium. We'll share their comments in the coming weeks, but here are a few news items:

As many of you know, UM has oral commitments from two four-star running backs name Jordan: St. Thomas Aquinas' Jordan Scarlett (rated 13th among all backs by rivals.com) and Westminster Christian's Jordan Cronkrite (ranked 20th).

Scarlett said today that he is definitely going to UM. But Cronkrite said that while he most likely will go to UM, he isn't sure and also is considering West Virginia, South Carolina, UF and Ohio State....

Westminster Christian four-star safety Tim Irvin said he's considering UM, UF, FSU, Clemson and Alabama and he has no favorite...

Plantation American Heritage quarterback Torrance Gibson said Ohio State is his front-runner but he's still considering UM, Tennessee, Auburn, UCF and Arizona. He wants to play quarterback and Miami has offered him as a quarterback, which is why the Canes are still in the mix. Gibson is rated the fourth-best "athlete" by rivals.com....

Gibson's teammate, five-star cornerback Tarvarus McFadden, disputed reports that
FSU is his leader and is considering Georgia, LSU, FSU, Ohio State and UCF....

Five-star Coconut Creek Monarch stars Shawn Burgess Becker and Calvin Ridley reiterated that they are firmly committed to Alabama. But Becker wouldn't rule out Miami. He said both of them are determined to go to the same school...

St. Thomas Aquinas four-star receiver Devante Peete said he's strongly considering UM, FSU, Ohio State and Louisville and they're all equal in his mind....

Aquinas four-star cornerback Rashard Causey Jr. remains an FAU commit but said that's "iffy" and UM has a good chance of landing him....

Booker T. Washington running back Mark Walton, a highly-regarded UM oral commitment, said he will know soon whether he will graduate in June 2015 or June 2016. He said it's 50/50.

"He wants to play quarterback and Miami has offered him as a quarterback, which is why the Canes are still in the mix."

Gibson: Coach, I wanna play QB...

Coley: OF COURSE! you can play QB Torrance, nooooooot a problem!(With His fingers crossed behind His back)

Mountain Cane

I heard from a guy who heard from a guy who heard from a guy that kayaa looked really sharp today. Hope he earns the starting nod.

CaneRock

ESPN's somethin' else, ain't they... On the night before we host recruits, they wanna show the bowl game. Coincidence?...I THINK NOT!

BigWindyCane1

Look for the canes to have a good season. I am concerned about the QB position, but all other positions are deeper and they are Golden recruits. Having seen many of the recruits play in high school, I can safely say that Golden got some really good recruits and did well in bringing a lot of talent to coral gables. I feel good about what I see and feel the canes match up well with all teams on their schedule. Canes will win the coastal.

Ohio_Cane

I'm becoming less and less concerned about the QB as each day passes. Give Kaaya the ball and turn him loose. Kids got the goods. Glad it's translating to college speed.

WWIM

BidWindy, you haven't been hearing all the good QB news????

Ohio, ikr. Kaaya has it. Just has to keep it up. But Heaps and those damn interviews though sounds just like Golden he is 23 though and is a Senior RS. I'm rolling with Trinidad Brad!

No surprise here: Jake Heaps and Brad Kaaya are leading the UM quarterback battle. Heaps remains the front-runner because of experience, but Kaaya is at least giving UM something to think about.

On Saturday, Heaps threw an 80-yard touchdown to Malcolm Lewis, and Kaaya threw a 10-yard TD to Walter Tucker.

"A guy like Jake, he's very game polished," offensive coordinator James Coley said. "He comes in with a lot of experience. He's very fundamentally sound. He's a little older than the other guys. He's been fairly accurate, making great checks on the line of scrimmage. I've been very pleased with him.

"Brad Kaaya, I have no idea if he's a freshman or not --- he acts like he's a senior. Just very sharp. We threw the playbook at these guys and they've responded. ... Brad's been accurate. Throwing the ball really well. As the week's gone on both of those guys have got into a groove and got into a little zone right now. Those guys are competing extremely hard against each other."

Coley said Malik Rosier "has used his athleticism and he just has to get going with the other stuff that the other guys are ahead of him with right now --- just grasping everything with regard to the offense. ... Kevin Olsen has been consistent. He's getting better."

Al Golden said the quarterback competition would be cut to two after Wednesday's scrimmage.
