Barry:

Among the four players in UM’s best freshman class ever, shooting guard Bruce Brown internally is considered the most ready to contribute; he can shoot, penetrate and he’s already physically strong. Some believe he could be a college version of Russell Westbrook….

But forward Dewan Huell, guard Dejan Vasiljevic and perhaps center Rodney Miller also should play as freshmen… A natural two-guard, Vasilijevic has reinforced in offseason workouts that he’s a great shooter, with some toughness and polish and ability to play some point guard…

Sophomore center Ebuka Izundu has gained more than 15 pounds (essential for him to be able to move people in the post), has a nice jump shot and is ahead of where departed Tonye Jekiri was at a similar point in their careers. Izundu and Kamari Murphy will compete to start at center; Huell can play center or power forward and will obviously grow into a starter eventually…

Ja’Quan Newton, who replaces Angel Rodriguez at point guard, has spent a lot of time refining his jump shot…

UM has one more scholarship and would love to add another ballhandler. Miami is among the schools on the radar for Buffalo sophomore transfer Lamonte Bearden but is not a favorite for him.... Davon Reed, UM’s most accomplished returnee, could play small forward if San Jose State transfer Rashad Muhammad seizes the starting shooting guard job.

“He's a very different athlete from [now Washington Wizards guard] Sheldon McClellan,” Jim Larranaga said. “Rashad is a shooter/scorer. Can really shoot the three. Has very clever moves going to the basket. His area of emphasis is to get better defensively, become a rebounder and get stronger.”...

UM is one of five finalists (with Oregon, Pittsburgh, Butler and Creighton) for four-star Vermont Academy shooting guard Christian David (a top 100 player) and one of four finalists for four-star Norcross, Ga.-based 6-9 power forward Lance Thomas (with UF, USC and Louisville). Rivals.com ranks Thomas as the 111th best player in the 2017 class.

BigWindyCane1

Spoke to a parent whose son is being recruited by UM, FSU and UF. After comparing CMR and his staff to the other coaches, he says it's not even close. CMR, his camps and the whole vibe given by this staff is unparalleled. The staff appear committed, concerned, caring and competent (4 Cs).

CMR has created all this buzz and interest without winning one game or having an indoor facility. I think they will win 10 games, make it to the ACC championship game and break ground on an indoor facility this season. Once those wins start coming in and that indoor facility is built, recruits will be fighting to get a visit. A fence will be erected around South Florida. J

Posted by: BigWindyCane1 | July 19, 2016 at 11:02 PM

That's the key right there.

We will have to fight to keep them out.

And I have a back flip to prove it!

BigWindyCane1

Excited about the UM basketball team this season too. They can win the ACC. Kamari Murphy is the team captain this season, and he is the emotional leader. The Canes will miss Angel, but the others will step up and fill the void. The Canes have a lot of weapons and Coach L and his staff know how to develop players. The Canes will be at least 9 deep to start the season

TonyCane

Just a question....why does the in door facility matter so much? Playing in the heat and humidity used to be a plus for us (and the Dolphins)...yet training in AC would seemingly negate that advantage. So why are we so set on that? Or is the IbisDome only to be used when there is a thunderstorm?

Terrance Sullivan

TonyCane I guess U didn't read where they are losing out on several practices Yearly by not having one also Miami is the Only Power 5 School to not either Have One or Building One. Tighten Up My Man. Don't Be That Guy Stuck In The Past. In the Past Their Were No Rules about if There was A Thunderstorm/ Lightning within 15-20 miles that U had to stop practice or Games. They Do that Now. TonyCane

LOL Terrance...that clarifies it. Honestly I had missed the details as to why it was so important (i.e. Thunderstorms). Makes sense.

Ok...secondary question. With the canopy up at the stadium, would they still delay for lightning?

Yes. The canopy only protects the fans from sun/rain. If lightning has a way in (open area), gotta protect the fans and players from it.

Posted by: CaneRock | July 20, 2016 at 11:04 AM

Yeah, but on WHAT other site? There is really no extra space near the athletic fields.
P.S. If the money is in, why delay the announcement? Is the school still marketing the naming rights?
P.P.S. I would like to see UM name the IPF after Ray Bellamy. He was UM's first black football player, first back student government president, and after graduation he also earned a master's degree from the U. I'm sure this tribute to UM's first African American scholarship athlete would project a very positive image for the university and it would be especially appreciated by our football players, the wider student body, and many of our UM alumni. Moreover, naming the IPF after UM's first black football player would certainly impress a lot of prospective recruits and their parents too.

30CINCO

Naming the IPF might just be after whoever donated the most money towards it.

It will be going right over the new artificial turf they just put in. It will probably be connected to the Schwartz Center or the weight room which will be new.

The Dude

What do they use Yaron Field for?

Mr. Moneymaker

We have two practice fields I believe, so they'll have the option to practice indoor and outside.

Forgot about that, good point.

The Dude

Posted by: Ohio_Cane | July 20, 2016 at 09:39 PM

Bentavious was the RB we had with speed.

BigWindyCane1

I agree with Moneymaker. There is that smaller field with the artificial turf and goal post on it, and the bigger grass field next to it. There is room to build an IDF, and still have enough room for an outdoor practice field next to it. That is a great location for it because it would be near the BUC and the other athletic facilities will be within walking distance.

I don't think there is any better place on campus for it to go. There really isn't much undeveloped land left around campus.

Lur-ker

My guess would be Yaron field. We have two other field, one with 2 practice fields and the other one with three.

If it's Yaron, we would keep our best practice fields, but just add an indoor field.

Lur-ker

^^^^^^^^^^
Disregard above

My guess would be Yaron field. We have two other fields, one with 2 practice fields and the other one with one, for a total of three

If it's Yaron, we would keep our best 3 outdoor practice fields, but just add an indoor field.

The Dude,

Don't worry about losing Bentavious Thompson and his speed. Darrion Felix and McFarland are just as fast and better. I like Felix better though...

Recap from other poster:

Coach Rumph on WQAM560 recap
Great segment with lots of info. Rumph talked very well, clearly an intelligent dude. Here's the executive summary of what Rumph said on the show:

-Lots of excitement around the program. Scrambling around the 2016 class was hard, but they felt they closed well.

-Richt is bringing that "SEC vibe" into recruiting, whole staff is working very hard and grinding, a lot of positive energy around the staff.

-Butch Davis hazed their freshmen to jump off the high dive in 1998 lol, says it's the last time he's ever going to jump off the high dives.

-Every move is discussed amongst staff, very thought out, everything is a strategy, called Richt a "genius". Every little thing is thought out. Richt thinks of everything including small things like having the best athletes working out in the gym when recruits tour the campus.

-Adrian Colbert and Corn Elder, MJ, Henley, Mayes, Redwine, Malek Young, J. Johnson, T. Murphy is the CB squad. Number one thing we're working on is how to tackle in an attacking 4-3 formation. "We're competing a lot between us. Very high level of competition during practice."

-The theme of Paradise Camp was competition. Need to learn how to compete again. Once we get the kids competing amongst themselves again, there'll be progress on Saturdays.

-Amazing atmosphere at Paradise, was great to work with his brothers Antrel Rolle and Buchanon. Every kid was comfortable, they concentrated on 1v1 drills.

-It's been a "dream come true" to come from HC to CB coach. Praised Coach Diaz and Coach Kool as teaching him so much and making him comfortable as a college coach. Praised Coach Banda and Baez as "recruiting Beasts" that "go all day long" in recruitment.

-"Of course" the defense is going to be more aggressive. Focusing on proper tackling, want the kids to be instinctive when attacking. This "defense fits Miami perfectly"

-Coaches counting the day, really anxious to start practice. Kids are super excited for Fall Camp. A great feeling in the program overall, lots of positive energy.

-The one thing he really wants to do on Game day? "I'm coming out of the smoke with the kids" no matter what. Says he's missed that feeling.

-Had this swag cockiness when discussing how the canes are going to kick the ass of the gators and "that team up north we won't name"

Richt looked and sounded good and relaxed on the ESPN ACC Media Days show today.

Kaaya looked very nervous, but eventually settled down and made some sense. (Kaaya also "looked" VERY large on the set.)

In the conclusion, Tom Luginbill talked about how much he likes Miami's chances this year too.

I'm psyched that we're going to make a HUGE statement on the National scene THIS year.

(We've GOT to stay healthy though... our depth could be our undoing.)

UNDEFEATED BABY! Let's Go Canes!

roachcane77

I particularly liked Richt's answer about being last in rushing in the ACC last season.

"You have to develop a fullback or two. Tight end has to block, wide receiver has to block. You have practice in such a way to develop a physical attitude."

" ...you have practice in such a way to develop a physical attitude."

YEAH... I LIKE THAT, I like that a lot! We're going to put a hurtin' on some people this year!

roachcane77

"A lot of teams will call the cadence and the quarterback will look to the sideline, the coach will kind of tell him what he wants him to do. I like to teach the quarterbacks to know what to do. Brad will be orchestrating what's going on up front the entire ballgame.”

YAY! No more stopping the flow of the offense for everyone to look over at the sidelines!

Despise the dude, but good speech by Trump last night.

Some of the statics he stated about African Americans if accurate, and we know numbers can be made to say anything, are horrifying.

TonyCane

I agree Roach! That was ridiculous at times under Coley as the new offense as installed...

1. QB gets ready to hike the ball, offense lined up
2. QB backs away, turns towards sideline. Precious seconds ebb away
3. QB raises his arms in seeming confusion. More seconds depleted
4. QB then races back into position and then
a) hikes the ball
b) calls a timeout because the clock was about to expire
c) gets a delay of game penalty because too much time had gone
