Swiss cheese is a generic name in North America for several related varieties of cheese, mainly of North American manufacture, which resemble Emmental cheese, a yellow, medium-hard cheese that originated in the area around Emmental, in Switzerland. Some types of Swiss cheese have a distinctive appearance, as the blocks of the cheese are riddled with holes known as "eyes". Swiss cheese without eyes is known as "blind".[1] (The term is applied to cheeses of this style made outside Switzerland, such as Jarlsberg cheese, which originates in Norway)..

Posted by: HillViewCane | August 23, 2016 at 11:07 AM

Don't pay the athletes.

How can you asked to get paid when you are already getting a full scholarship, housing, food, caoching, strength conditioning , nutrition counseling that is valued at $300,000 over 4 years and that gives you the ONLY shot at the NFL and the millions of dollars that go with it?

And IF you don't make the NFL then you can come back and get a JOB as a coach or be the strength coach and EARN $600k/year or more!

It is the opportunity of a lifetime!!!

SOUP

There are a million HS football players who would DIE for the opportunity to get "PAID" a full ride at a major school. It is their only shot at their dream of being in the NFL and making millions. Heck they are being PAID $75k a year just to go to class and play football with everything taking care of for them: housing, food, training, coaching and medical. How many college kids have it that good? I know I didn't!

#WorkingForALiving

#SocialismIsForSuckas

UMike

SOUP..while I can agree with what you are saying, there is certainly an argument to be made the players should make something. If the schools or NCAA were non-profit perhaps it would be different. I agree they are given an awesome opportunity of a lifetime, but they are also oppressed to a large degree to the point they cant even accept a free dinner without it potentially ruining their career/future.

Also, the football and basketball programs bring revenue and prestige that allows the universities to charge such lucrative tuitions. They need to break bread dawg...

Go Canes!

That point has its valid side until you factor in Alabama generated $100 million in football revenue last year.

There's something SERIOUSLY wrong with the system when an Olympic swimmer can keep all they get and still be considered amateurs but a Heisman winner can't take a free meal without it becoming the lead story on sportscenter.

CaneRock

Non-revenue sports spend twice as much as they bring in at UM, football & men's basketball subsidizes that. If it was the other way around, they'd be calling it welfare...but when the sports with the black guys subsidize it, they call it..."amateurism"...LOL.

Terrance Sullivan

Baseball doesn't spend twice as much as it brings in so U need to adjust that LOL. Besides Baseball is a revenue sport.Same as Women's Basketball because all 4 teams charge admission, both go to the tournament's and bring in cash, and all sports help bring in television revenue and help lead to ACC Network LOL.

CaneRock

Maybe baseball at UM makes money, but I seriously doubt it. Women's Basketball definitely doesn't make money. Again, non-revenue sports spend twice as much as they bring in, football & men's basketball pick up most of the tab.

HillViewCane

Soup here is the thing. It would be different if football or basketball players could get a little job on the side. Anything would help . You mention the value of their scholarship but that varies when you factor actual tuition cost at universities, national reputation, starting salaries etc. In-state tuition at UF is only 7,000 a year how valuable is that degree in whatever BS major they are pushed into by the academic advisors under the guidance of coaches so they can have as much time as possible to improve their athletic skills? It's not designed to be in the best interest of the student athletes. If I have an academic scholarship I can start a company on the side and do whatever to get paid. But as an athlete I can't do a simple voiceover ad for a car dealership. It's a system that pays lip service but could easily do more to support the best interest of the student athlete. To build them up and not just control them. I understand your point but respectfully disagree. I think they should get paid. How many millions did Al Golden and D'no "earn" from the U? Plus their kids could get these super valuable scholarships as well. Pay the athletes or allow them to make outside income.

HillViewCane

These kids are working for a living. Manual labor, blood sweat and tears. You say socialism is forsuckas but are saying a system where they work and earn money for the university and get payment as room and board is what you support?

Lets compromise: Give ALL college athletes a monthly "stipend" when on campus of say $500 for food, clothing and necessities. Give them a WalMart or Publix Gift card NOT cash.

Yes, half the kids will sell them for $250 to go party but hey its a compromise.

SOUP

You say socialism is forsuckas but are saying a system where they work and earn money for the university and get payment as room and board is what you support?

Posted by: HillViewCane | August 23, 2016 at 09:11 PM

They get a chance they would never have otherwise and get room, board, education, training, nutrition, coaching, etc. If they are so unhappy with the system then nobody is forcing them to go to college or play football. Trust me when there are a MILLION others who would gladly take their place in a minute then it can't be so bad now can it?

Dude, it is called LIFE. When they leave college, don't get drafted into the NFL and give up football they have to find this thing called a JOB.

When you get you JOB, lets say at Ford selling cars, Ford doesn't give you a % of what they make from your work, they give you a thing called a SALARY. If you surpass your quota of sales you get a BONUS.

Ford doesn't say: "Well since we make a lot of money well we are going to give it all back to the employees."

If you don't like Ford's way of doing business then you have choices: Leave Ford for another car company or another JOB altogether or start your own car company, a better one at that and take all of Fords customers and make a billion dollars. Then YOU can give ALL of YOUR money to the employees if you want. After all it is YOUR company and you will not want ANY money from it for making it great, or profitable or successful!!!

Lur-ker

Socialism is definitely for suckas

TonyCane

Pay the athletes or allow them to make outside income.

Posted by: SOUP | August 23, 2016 at 10:09 PM

Compromise...here's an example. Create a fund based off of jersey sales with the names and numbers of players from various teams. Now the sale of a Brad Kayaa jersey might sell considerably more than Jonathan Quest out of Middle Earth State South. But it all goes into a pool, and is then distributed evenly among every D1 scholarship player.

Lur-ker

Can of worms.

SOUP

Oh and BTW, here's another thing:

Like MLB has the "minor leagues" the NFL could start the same nonsense, draft kids out of HS and eliminate college football altogether. How does that strike you?

Then the "kids" could spend their time for 3 to 7 years in the minors while not making any money, get injured and cut from the team and have no life whatsoever, all while traveling on team buses staying in small town seedy hotels and NEVER get a college education or a dollar.

Then you completely lose college football and basketball and baseball as you know it, AND all the revenue generated by those sports to pay for college athletes in all sports opportunities to get a degree and experience the college life.

Then all you have is true academics and students and no sports whatsoever. So now you just cut out about 250,000 mostly minority students from your Universities each and every year over 10 years that's 2.5 million.

How's THAT for a model for you? You happy now???

Be careful what you ask for.

Always think about the END GAME.

thirstybuzzardcane

If there was a minor league football league, and it paid a salary of lets say $10K to each player, how many kids coming out of high school would play? Kids are still going to play college ball.

College is a prevlidge/honor for an athlete. They should be grateful for the opportunity that most Americans can't even get!

thirstybuzzardcane

We mine as well start paying high school kids as well. Better yet, lets start paying kids in pee wee! Where does it end?

SOUP

Pay the athletes or allow them to make outside income.

Posted by: HillViewCane | August 23, 2016 at 09:08 PM

Here's a better idea:

Since you believe that a LARGE majority of college athletes are SO unhappy and being abused by the current system, fix it.

Go out and sell your idea about how "unfair" the current system is, call Unkle Luke and others to get support funding and start your own "minor leagues" of football as a feeder system to the NFL in place of the current college system.

Pay all the players a $100,000 a year or more if you want to out of YOUR own money and your funders' start up money. See if it gets any traction? See how long that lasts?

Oh and what about stadiums? Where U gonna play your games? On college campuses? U got any Cheerleaders? What about Bands?

thirstybuzzardcane

Where are they now?
