Beat Duke and get a long awaited bowl victory. Give recruits we still have left to get, gives them something to get excited about and with what we have coming back, we could be and should be a top 10 team next year. Sad thing is we should be 10-1 right now but The Herb knows we are not a top 10 team, even if we had achieved that record. Got to learn how to win the big games and the w's will start flowing.

CanesRnotbackyet

orange 'n green in the vein

The basketball team is.

Go Canes!

Aside from Coley and Corn, the majority of our plays are being made by freshmen to a few juniors.

Richards, Njoku, the three LBs. Walton, Malek, Macintosh, Jaquan, Joe Jackson and the rest are here for 1-3 seasons more.

If we can have a 2017 freshman class have the kind of impact this one has, we will be a long way towards getting to where we want to be.

FIXED for ya

BigWindyCane1

Mark Walton at 1,005 yards for the season and 5.6 yards a carry and 14 TDs. Walton will definitely be first or second team all ACC.

Now, another double-digit win at home against Duke and the Canes could sneak into the top 25 and a good bowl game. The recruits are watching this resurgence led by the young players. The Canes' future is bright

Coolmac758

We might Lose a Couple Recruits No Matter What, but Today I Saw Alot of Potential, and They're real Young. We Have at Least 6 True Freshman on Defense that can Start now. Offensive Lineman, Wide Receiver's and CornerBacks. I heard DJ Johnson might Decommit but We Stacked There Anyway. Only True Canes are Wanted. I Finally See a Championship Mentality.

Nemo...bad coaching and a mediocre QB?

1miamifan

Watching them in person, we are young at lb and secondary. We had a few plays in the backfield. No qb pressures. Kaaya, definitely not that mobile, could have ran for a few yards. Tends to stair down receivers. We came out better in the second fall.

BigWindyCane1

The Canes are a much better team now than they were in the middle of the season. The Canes still have not played their best game yet. The Canes can play a lot better. They really struggled to find a rhythm on offense and the injuries they suffered mid season was too much to overcome. But the Canes under CMR have never quit, and they played hard in spite of their issues. They really did a great job of developing their players this year, and as Richards and Walton and the offensive line grew, so did the offense. Once Kaaya turns the corner, this Canes offense can be very very explosive

BEERicane

Once Kaaya leaves, the O will Go.

Go Canes!

We scored more points against NC State than FSU and Clemson, including OT.

Go Canes!

If I remember correctly FSU scored with a minute left to get to 24 against them and Clemson only scored 17 in regulation against the Wolfpack.

And Clemson was at home.

That is where we were just one year and about 30 days ago. Golden was canned, we had no defense and no defensive identity. We were lower than the bottom. Now, we have a defensive mentality and an offense that doesn't shoot itself in the foot. No turnovers today. None. Zilch. I'll take boring wins over distressing losses any day. Hell, the 17-0 Fins team was boring. Now this team isn't anywhere that for sure but a ton of progress has been made in a year. You wouldn't know it by reading the posts here but a hell of a turn around has been made by this staff.

Miami would be the only 4 loss team inside the top 25. Would have to jump 2 loss Navy, 3 loss Tennessee, Stanford and North Carolina. Sorry, top 25 probably isnt going to happen unless several ranked teams lose. Even then Miami still wouldnt deserve it. That said, if Miami can beat Duke and win a bowl game against a decent team, then they'd have an argument.

The playcalling, QB, Drops, OL and penalties have been worse than last year for most of the year. We padded the points for stats at the beginning of the year too.

Richt has definitely gotten better this month. The O has gotten better. Kaaya isn't a game changer, but he isn't horrible either.. until he has pressure.

Nice nice win...Walton is quite a player...gives it his all. Gus needs get back on the bus home no passion. The D played well. The line is hot cold....very average a lot of room for improvement. I agree this was a very very good win. I sat in that stadium in 2008 and watched Russell Wilson beat us 38-28. I remember the 2012 game that Morris threw for like 566 yards and we only won 44-37. The Wolf Pack always play us well. I have seen alot of their games this year since I live in Virginia. I knew we would not walk all over this team. They stared a win against FSU and Clemson right in the eye and let it get away. Against us? Not not so much today. We put the foot to the metal after halftime and just kept scoring points all half long. A dominant performance.

Yes, that schedule of GT, FSU, NC, ND, and VT was too much for such a young team. 1-4 in that stretch hurts. But we beat GT, were competitive against FSU (I am not sure we would have won even if we make the extra point), were close against ND and UNC. Fell apart against VT up there (we never dominate up here except for one time lately). But I saw something today I haven't seen in a long time.

I saw a defense that was tremendous. NC State is a damn good team. That RB is potentially NFL quality, as is Samuels on the outside. We basically shut doth down in the running game. And we did it on their senior day. And we did it by kids who were mostly playing high school ball in the last year or two. That tells me we are well on our way to being back if we are not already very close to being there. So be very excited because I think the Richt system has proven successful (ask it's inventor Bobby Bowden) and there is nothing but NFL coaching and many future NFL players on the defensive side of the ball.

VA Cane

CMR seems to be settling in to better play calling. He loves the run....you have to run. Walton; not the biggest or fastest...but he is Old School Cane; no stars can measure this kids heart and desire. He is no quit. Those Frosh LBs, Jackson and others on D.....pretty damn impressive. richards is going to be a big time kid....Nojku is a beast.....use him.

CMR is throwing it more...mixing it up better. BK did not play bad...yes he misses open people...but he did not turn it over and made some nice throws. I even think at times...the line did block....but we are chubby....shuffle the feet instead of picking them up...hold...and just are not consistent. Yes injuries have been an issue. We just have to overcome them.

This damn d is something. That brutal MAN....I LOVE it!!!! We need to keep working on tackling....and we missed a few coverages....but damn those kids keep coming. Its been years really years since we played D!!!!
We are learning...yes the gauntlet was brutal....but there is a lot of bright at the end of the tunnel....these kids despite some warts.....are winners who do not quit. Last year Clemson UNC.....they quit...and that mentality set in the day AlPa and Co arrived.....this year....NO quit. We are improving and will get better! Proud of the kids!

sjmparman

Exactly VA. You saw what we all saw. Some want to focus on individual flaws. You can pick any kid out and find flaws on any team, any business and any organization, even the most successful ones and the not so successful ones. But if that team, business or organization has a winning plan and management, it will succeed. We saw success today. We will see more success than failure from this point going forward. And just a year ago, we were the proverbial dumpster fire.

raizecane

Im still pissed that fox decided to switch games with 5 min left and NCS driving.

VA Cane

My biggest takeaway was 2 fold; we are learning how to win together, by playing as a team....and these guys do not get down and quit. The UNC and Clemson games were the worst I have ever seen....along with the UVA OB finale.....people just QUIT!!

Th way we play says a lot about the kids.....and CMR and Co.....instead of excuses they are finding solutions.....thats very important and says alot about CMR, the staff, Blake James and the kids....no quit. You CAN build on that big time.

sjmparman

I did espn3, game was not blacked out locally as GT v VA was the featured ACC game on week. I just hooked it up to the TV from computer. Locally though, if game is on a local channel provider they do that crap. I remember one year waiting almost a half because Delaware and some other team went to OT. Was pissed. I also lived through the Heidi game when I was a Raider fan, lol.

sjmparman

I really think you are spot on VA. Right now, this is a moment in time for these guys to take it up a notch. Duke is going to be emotional after last game. They going home with an L. They know it and we know it. We will be 8-4. We will get a good bowl game. Next year we won't sweat the location on the bowl game.

BigWindyCane1

BeerCane,

Mark Walton might be first team all ACC. He has 14 TDs and 1,005 yards on 5.6 per carry, and he is not the Canes featured RB. Only Dalvin Cook is having a better year in the ACC at the RB spot, but I think the ACC picks two RBs for first team. The Canes have other players who I think might make second and third team All ACC.

Richards, Shaq and Pinckney will definitely be first team All ACC freshmen, if not Freshmen All American.

orange 'n green in the vein

Beer, they got lazy in the 2nd and they had to play a smaller lineup against a bigger team that like to back cut to the basket and wasn't going to lack for trying. Everything is fine (for now).

Football team needs a month of practice and a QB who doesn't choke against non losing teams who won't turnover themselves into a sure loss when moving the football. Everything needs improvement over there.

Go Canes!

Think Dalvin has rb locked up.

Imo Richards and Corn deserve it though neither will be there.

Good solid win. The offense are not world beaters but are efficient enough against some of these middle of the road ACC teams. Ricards is the man and that's more than I can say about Coley, who seems to disappear for long stretches of the game. Makes the tough catches though, when he does show back up. All I can say is thank U that we have Diaz. The dude has been this teams savior. losing 3 starters before the season starts playing 5 or 6 freshmen at some points of the season. the one bad game, Va. Tech, we probably had 5 starters out and stilled played tough. Should be Coordinator of the year. I'd like us to get One monster on the front wall, the guys we have are solid but that 'IT" guy is all we need. Shore up the secondary and the Dee will be scary next year. I know Cager will be back, but I hope we get a good burner at WR, that can contribute right away.

BigWindyCane1

I was concerned about NC State, but a win by 2 TDs on the road against a top run defense on senior day is very very impressive. This Canes team has improved a lot since mid season and there is a lot of room for growth. Walton has shown the coaches and fans that he is one of the best RBs in the ACC.

Richards has really improved. After watching him play the first two games against FAMU and FAU, I was convinced he was the WR who had the potential to be the true #1 receiver on the team because he consistently gets open and gives the QB a target to throw too. Richards was talented coming out of high school, but Credit goes to the coaching for recognizing Richards potential and developing him. Kaaya now looks for him in the clutch.

I like the way the coaches develop Njoku as a pass threat and receiver. I would like to see more effort when the pass is not coming to him, but that said, he has improved somewhat in finishing his routes and run blocking.

The offensive line is gelling and improving. Kaaya has all the tools. I have seen Kaaya grow somewhat, and if he finds himself in this offense, the Canes should put up 40+ points a game in a pass/run balanced offense. Even the run game has areas to improve.

CGNC

Terrance what time is the walk?

I think the numbers speak for themselves here:

Coker last year vs Shannon first year:
2006: (5-6) PF: 217 PA: 167
2007: (5-6) PF: 233 PA: 284

Shannon last year vs Golden first year:
2010: (7-4) PF: 306 PA: 212
2011: (6-5) PF: 301 PA: 218

Golden last year vs Richt first year:
2015: (7-4) PF: 329 PA: 311
2016: (7-4) PF: 382 PA: 199

Shannon saw an (ironic) collapse in defensive performance in his first year as coach, while still hampered by sheer lack of numbers at wide receiver and quarterback that he inherited from Coker.

Shannon's 2010 squad was his most talented team and should have been a ten win squad. However a complete lack of depth at QB (Spencer Whipple, true freshman Stephen Morris) led to an over-reliance on Jacory Harris, who was regressing under Whipple. And a splintering between Shannon and Whipple. Golden inherited a talented squad but was unable to improve on Shannon's record, although point totals were almost identical. Hampering the team was a string of suspensions in the first half of the year. The bottom would not fall out on the defense until year two.

In Richt's first year we have seen tremendous improvement in the defense, and of the previous transitions this is by far the biggest positive year over year change displayed. Offense remains a question mark, but my impression is that we will see growth in year two.

Hindsight is golden (LOL) with a few breaks here and there we would have a great shot at being 11-1. All things considered from the past 13 years, 8-4 with a bright future is still acceptable. we build on it, get some more kids, work with the young guys we have and really have a breakout year. I can live with that!

The Dude (AR-15 Builder)

Nothing matters but winning out. Beat Duke, win a bowl. 9-4 will be let down but its an okay start to the Richt regime. Sure wish we could have beaten Notre Dame, worst loss of the year. A win over UNC would have been great too. We have to beat Duke and I'm thinking we will. Then we have to win a bowl even if it means over achieving. We still need a RB, a WR, an OL, a CB, and a DL in this class. Every bit of winning helps.

Time for the Canes to put on their best show of the season so that the seniors, like Elder, Lewis, Colbert, Jenkins, Coley, Carter, Dobard, Gall, Gabriel, Carroll, Batten, Vogel, and Isadora (I hope I didn't miss anyone), can go out in style.

BigWindyCane1

This 2016 freshmen class at UM was small, but the quality was very good. I haven't seen this many freshmen play since the famous 2008 #1 recruiting class under Shannon, but this group seems better across the board. What I love is that CMR is developing these players and they are improving as the season progresses. This class has several players who have potential to play in the NFL. If CMR keeps developing the current players and bringing in this same level of talent, this could be the foundation of a great program.

If Fedora jumps to LSU then UNC should go after Strong. A much better fit for him than at UT IMO.

Does Strong still collect the $10M buyout if he immediately takes another coaching job? Or does he have to wait the two years left on the deal, like Mack Brown?

I'm hoping Fedora goes to Texas. It will be good for them, and one less competent coach in the ACC. I don't want UNC getting to strong for too long and building real momentum.
