Good article Hassan. Kaaya gives the Canes the best chance to win the ACC title next season. As much as I like Perry and the other QBs on the roster, Kaaya gives the Canes a really good shot at winning every game next season. Walton, Richards and the rest of the Canes will improve a lot next year under CMR's offense. Donaldson will probably and provide more needed quality depth on a more experienced offensive line.

The Canes could be top 10 on both sides of the ball. The front seven on defense is returning and should be really nasty and stout. The defense could be the best since 2001-2002. The Canes are loaded with potential NFL prospects on defense

These Canes should win this bowl, pull in a very good recruiting class and win the ACC next season with Kaaya staying. I think he sees the opportunity and will stay.

Hassan,
U forgot to mention those brix for feet. I do agree he gives us our best chance to win, more so than anyone we have on the roster or coming in. With him back next year we have a good chance to do sum damage. The play calling hurt him also, as well as the O-line. He cannot extend plays with his legs and this drives The Herb nuts. Lastly, have u ever seen him bring us back, when down? Uh, I didn't think so and he had no big time wins under his belt.

Brought us back from down 17-3 to take the lead against FSU 24-23 before the D coughed up the lead.

Last year's bowl game went 5 for 5 for 70 yards before Walton fumbled at the goal line.

This year threw what should have been the game tying TD but extra point blocked.

This year brought us back from down 20-0 to take 27-20 lead before the D gave up 10 points on ND's last two drives.

You're 100% correct, close doesn't count. But it certainly proves the point that TEAMS lose games, not an individual player.

Butch went 0-10 against FSU and VT his first five seasons.

#Statslie?

Go Canes!

Oh and remember 2014 Vs FSU?

We are CRUSHING them 23-10 and Kaaya throws a perfect strike to Dobard to ice the game.

Thirty three yards later Dobard fumbles in FSU territory and FSU scores again.

Next drive Kaaya drives them to another field goal and it's 26-20 late.

FSU scores yet again.

Next drive, loss on running play, false start and we don't convert 3rd and 16.

FSU scores again and we lose.

Who lost that game?

Kaaya?

LMAO!!!

BigWindyCane1

Kaaya might come back, and if he does, he could become my favorite Canes QB to ever go 1-3 v FSU.

The Canes will have the coaches, talent and experience to win the ACC next season. This season they beat some good teams by two TDs or more but couldn't win any of the close games. Another year of experience and an upgrade of young talent at all the key positions, and the Canes can continue to win all the blowouts, but also win a few of those close, competitive games as well.

The Dude

Good stuff blog.

Hassan,

you and my favorite Cane Rohan!....My new desktop background.

Well written article. I think BKs biggest issue is is footwork. I teach my guys a lot of different drops, but they have to be quick, and picking them up...not the shuffle BK has. I also think he has not had anywhere a O line like Dorsey had, so he has taken some pops....like Jacory did. CMR did not really get it together until the end so he had another issue there. I think with a lot of work, new confidence, more teaching, serious footwork training...he could be a really good QB. I like the kid.

I need to call the UM football office....tell them about my Freddy.....so many of our guys have very poor footwork....it has made a huge difference for my guys for about 30 years...it teaches you so much. JMO!

We Can All Agree I'm sure that it's in All their best interest to return, Njoku is ready but he'd have more by returning. Yes, the VLS really upgraded the capabilities of the Ticonderogas and Spruance ships. It made them very capable ships. I remember how underpowered the latter seemed when they first came out. Huge, blocky ships with two 5" guns, an ASROC launcher, and a Sea Sparrow launcher.

There was also this..."interesting" Phase 2 modernization of the Iowas that was bandied about in 1982. Amongst other things, it called for replacing the aft 16" gun with a slew of VLS cells.

VA Cane

Good Brad...Bad Brad.....but if he gets the individual coaching....hint hint CMR...and a real dynamic OC...not that Gawga Dawg run addiction....he can really have a nice Sr year and be a higher pick.

I looked up Richts QBs....2001-2015.
David Greene, D. J. Shockley, Joe Tereshinski, Matthew Stafford,Joe Cox, Aaron Murray, Hutson Mason,Greyson Lambert,Faton Bauta.

Some of them....well who in the F**K? but ...Shockley was good.....Murray & Greene 1 and 2 in SEC career passing yards with 13,100 11,500 respectively very good passers....Stafford is 27th, but is the best QB Richt ever produced....so it can be done coach your guys show it....so stop with that futile Gawja run you stick with....and chuck it...this is UM we pass we develop QBs and WRs, TEs....and backs that can catch....so CMR this is VAC.....you develop that QB...and work with a dynamic OC and work together on the attack...DEVELOP BK.

I love to run and do it.....but this is a new era I am not saying use a spread...though some might be good...and I like the hurry up....but throw it and run it.....I love to get a great run start...but I leanred a long time ago.....especially in cold wet snowy games....chuck one right off....it has worked so much for us because we work at it....this SB....first play78 yrder.....set the tone for the win!!

Funny thing for you guys...when I played for Beamer and we won 38 in a row 2 state titles....I was free safety D captain.. back up QB junior year..... we ran a pro set on O.....and I QB'd my senior year....Doug Flutie before him...lol I am 5'7".......we passed the hell out of people in the mid 70s.....whipped ass cause nobody could cover us....BUT....look at Beamer at VT.....the big deal most of the time with his tenure was that boring grinding O.....many fans hated it....he won.....but never ever big.....I could never figure it out as I played in a wide open O...we did shotgun and all kinds of stuff....same with CMR...he passed more....but he gets back into that grind.....and has never won big....Big to me is not division or conference...dime a dozen...I mean NCs Baby....thats the U we know and love!!!! Besides Stafford, what other Richt College coached QB is/was ballin' in the League?

UMike

He said he doesn't like what he's seen from Allison.... when has he seen him?

Posted by: WWIN | December 19, 2016 at 08:14 PM

Allison was 0-1 for 0 yards in the spring game. Both Shirrefs and Little Vinny had more attempts, completions and yards. Throughout practice he couldn't distance himself from the likes of Shirreffs or Testaverde. He couldnt beat out Rosier. So it doesnt have to be me watching him every day to know he hasnt dont shyt to make me believe he should be the starter next year if Kaaya does leave. Besides having a 4-star raking besides his name, what has he done to show he will start?

UMike

^^^ Now Allison could take a big step, Perry could be lights out, its possible. And I do think in today's college football world we have come to expect to much from freshman QB's, especially 4-5 Star ones. Its just my opinion that its in Miami's best interest if Kaaya comes back, even if he isnt elite or a 1st rounder.

Go Canes!

No one knows high school football better and is more careful with his words than Larry Bluestien. His comments about Perry made me very hopeful for our future st QB.

Not knocking Allison but man that was some very, very high praise from a local legend.

If we lose Kaaya we may see a Rozier to Perry transition or maybe s true freshman starting next year.

Go Canes!

Rated the No. 82 overall 2017 prospect by Rivals, Perry threw 22 touchdowns and two interceptions this past season and ran for four touchdowns. His yardage numbers weren’t extraordinary (1682 passing, 132 rushing on 41 carries), but UM believes he has star potential.

ESPN says the 6-4 Perry is “a great combination of height, size, potential and athleticism. Capable of buying time with his feet, completing passes on the move, or picking up chunks of yardage on designed runs. Very raw mechanically and in terms of footwork. Lot of upside. His deficiencies are coachable.”

Recruiting analyst Larry Blustein said: “I love Perry. I’ve seen him a lot. He’s got Lamar Jackson type of ability, and he may have a better arm than Lamar [the Louisville quarterback who won the Heisman Trophy]. He’s very good. Fast, tall, can whip the ball around.”

Weldon, at Tampa Jefferson, had bigger yardage numbers than Perry (3135 yrds passing; 368 rushing on 96 carries; and 11 rushing touchdowns), but threw fewer TDs (19) than Perry and had more interceptions (11).

Rivals rates Weldon the No. 19 pro-style prospect. He isn’t in ESPN’s top 300, and most consider Perry the better prospect.

“Perry is so athletic, in one day, he could have a massive practice and Richt could say, ‘I’m starting him’” next season if Kaaya turns pro.

UMike

Rozier might fit well in a read option attack, but still prefer Kaaya

Go Canes!

Absolutely. Not a lot to be gained by plugging in a one year starter.

I see you configured that Turd polisher from Golden to Kaaya.

2014 VS FSU Kaaya chokes and throws pick on the last drive that could have won the game

2015 VS FSU See 2014

2016 VS FSU Kaaya throws pick in the end zone right before the half that have given the canes a nice lead before going into 1st half then Kaaya channels his inner Kirby Freeman for the 95% of the second half before throwing a TD that could have tied the game if we would have made the PAT

Go Canes you keep talking about all these comebacks vs. FSU and ND but who put in those situations?

Just believe what you want to believe Sinister.

Nevermind the fact Kaaya didn't actually throw any INTs in the 2015 game. He had over 400 yards passing and 3 TDs though.

And don't worry about the fact he had more yards passing and more TDs in the 2014 game than Jameis Winston did, all with fewer throws.

And that pinpoint potential game tying throw to Coley on 4th down with the game on the line after three straight runs put him in an incredibly difficult spot? Meant nothing cause he threw a pick in the first half.

Three starts against FSU stat line:

935 yards passing, 8 TDs, 2 INTs.

Yeah, it's 100% his fault.

SinisterCane

Posted by: Go Canes! | December 20, 2016 at 08:32 AM

If Kaaya goes 3-0 vs. FSU you would hold him in the same light as Dan Marino and there be no mention of team victory

QB/HC's get ALL the blame and glory, that's just the way it is

UMike

Even if Kaaya has maxed out on his potential, IMO he still gives us a better chance to win then a freshman twig who isnt on campus yet, a guy who hasnt been able to beat our Kaaya in 3 years or the guy that couldnt beat out that same back up. Of course this is dependent on CMR scheming and play calling.

Posted by: SinisterCane | December 20, 2016 at 08:42 AM

No I wouldn't.

You're the only person I hear saying that.

I don't give Butch and Dorsey all the credit for the run they had against FSU.

Our team beat them offensively, defensively and on special teams.

Even though QB is vitally important, no one player beats a whole team.

IMO Kaaya has done his share and more in the FSU series for us to have won at least two of them, but it didn't happen.

Thats the way it goes.

But none of the games were won and lost just because of him.

Ohio_Cane

I don't understand the negativity towards Jack Allison. Is the only knock on him that he couldn't beat out Kaaya (who had 25 starts under his belt), or Rosier?

The kid is a Freshman. Give him time to grow, learn, etc.

I'm not saying he's gonna be Ken Dorsey, but U certainly can't write him off just yet.

UMike

Ohio... My intent was not to knock on Allison, although it probably came across that way. I'm trying to prove my point that IMO no one we have right now or coming in will give us a better chance to win next year then Kaaya.

Ohio_Cane

Wasn't really just U, though, Mike. I've seen it over the last few weeks. Just don't get it.

I do agree with U that Kaaya gives us the best chance, though. A lot here won't agree with U because they dislike him, but I do.

SinisterCane

Anybody but Kaaya

UMike

I know Kaaya has his short comings and I do not believe he is elite or a 1st rounder (well maybe in a weak draft class), but the others guys haven't shown anything to this point that makes me feel they would give us a better chance to win next season.

Ohio_Cane

If Kaaya leaves and Rosier is our starter for some reason (would be shocked), we won't win 9 games. I don't care what he did one game against a shitty Duke team with an even worse OC.

Go Canes!

Agree with UMike.

Don't think anyone here is giving up on anyone.

Just making the point that it's tough to see him outdoing as a redshirt freshman what Kaaya has done to date and what he most certainly will do next year.

Even if we get this year's version of him, we will be far better off.

If we get second half of the season Kaaya, it's even more of a no-brainer.

UMike

Ohio and Go, I agree.

Go Canes!

Posted by: Ohio_Cane | December 20, 2016 at 09:42 AM

Agree.

Especially since we are losing Coley, Barrios and Njoku.

Even if Kaaya stays, for the second year in a row he's losing two of his top receivers.

I wonder who the heck he's going to throw to next year.

UMike

For the sake of the program, we need Allison to progress, if not that means its Perry or bust. IDK anything about Weldon

UMike

I wonder who the heck he's going to throw to next year.

Posted by: Go Canes! | December 20, 2016 at 09:47 AM

IDK, but Im hoping to see Homer house a few long TD's. We havent had that speed at the RB position since Miller.

Ohio_Cane

Richards is an obvious answer, but can he handle getting all the attention? He benefited this year from teams focusing, at least partially, on Coley and Njoku. He'll now be the opposing teams focus. Will he slump or shine? I don't know the answer, but I'm intrigued to find out.

UMike

Berrios, Cager, Richards, Mullins, Herdon etc. We have some talent there. Not exactly any speed demons, but talent.

Ohio_Cane

Gruden to LA.

Players notified.

Ohio_Cane

We are REALLY scrambling for TE's right now in recruiting. It would go a LONG WAY for Njoku to stay another year.

I don't believe he is, though.

Posted by: SinisterCane | December 20, 2016 at 10:23 AM

I will ask you this question and you can say whatever you want about Kaaya afterwards and I won't bother answering.

On a scale of 1 to 10 how badly do you think CMR wants Kaaya to return next year?

He has seen every quarterback on this roster practice extensively and I am sure seen a ton of film on the two incoming freshmen.

After doing that, do you think he just shrugs his shoulders at the thought of him leaving and says were fine. Or does he think our current QB is vitally important to our success next year.

UMike

With Ahmmon Richards receiving a ton of attention on the offensive side of the ball for his accomplishments in his first season as a Hurricane, freshman defensive end Joseph Jackson has been equally as impressive as a pass rusher. He leads the team with 7.5 sacks and Miami expects his role to blossom during the spring and heading into next season.

I see a lot of similarities between Jackson and 2017 commit Jonathan Garvin as prospects coming out of high school -- their physical traits seem to be nearly identical. Words such as "length" and "twitch" were used to describe Jackson, with pundits saying he might be "too raw" to make an impact right away.

247sports listed Jackson at 6-4, 229 pounds coming out of Gulliver, and he is now listed at 6-5, 245 pounds on Miami's official roster. 247sports currently lists Garvin at 6-3.5, 222 pounds. Not only do both have the size that most coaches look for in the modern elite pass rusher, but their ability to move like a much smaller defender is what makes them special.

One major advantage that Garvin will have -- he enrolls at Miami in January. Jackson's flashy freshman season is all that more amazing when you consider that he did not get to UM until mid-May, meaning he was not involved in the team's offseason weight room program. If Jackson was able to gain 15 pounds that easily, then imagine what Garvin might be able to do with more time under coaches' supervision and seemingly an identical frame. An even more intriguing factor with the two is their age. Jackson enrolled at Miami at 19 years 4 months old, while Garvin will be almost two full years younger than Jackson at the time of enrollment -- 17 years 6 months.

Looking at the high school production for each, Garvin's senior season was utter domination -- recording a school record 18 sacks along with 97 total tackles. His 12-minute highlight tape is a spectacle to watch as he chases down and engulfs opponents play-after-play. Jackson had solid output his senior year at Gulliver with 6 sacks and 46 tackles. Although his highlights are not as lengthy as Garvin's, you can definitely see the flashes of physical prowess that he possessed.

It is also important to note that Jackson played at the 3A classification, while Garvin is at the 8A level. In his short time at Miami, defensive line coach Craig Kuligowski has proven that he is the most valuable position coach on staff and I'm excited to see what he can do with Garvin. This goes without saying that D.J. Johnson is an absolutely elite prospect in this class as well.

LOL @ we won't 9 games under Rosier. $h!t, pending the outcome of the bowl game, we haven't won 9 games under Kaaya!

And although the Duke game was a very small sample size, Rosier has a better win %age vs ranked opponents than Kaaya!

This roster is still riddled with Faildon's Pillar Value soldiers, Let CMR get his QB's to turn team around.

All we need is one good Qb, you take away Lamar from Louisville or FSU's QB from the squad and they're a 7 win team
