Go Canes!

Perhaps William “Cade” Weldon’s biggest break came the day record-breaking University of Miami quarterback Brad Kaaya announced he was forgoing his senior season to enter the 2017 NFL Draft.

Perhaps it will be his biggest hurdle.

Weldon, the son of Florida State’s 1991 Heisman Trophy runner-up William “Casey” Weldon, is already on the UM campus working out and taking classes as he learns the offense, prepares for spring practice and begins his quest to win the starting job of the most important position in football.

“I’m excited about getting here,” Weldon, 18, told the Miami Herald by phone when he arrived in Coral Gables earlier this month. “If Brad had ended up choosing to stay, then I could sit there and learn from him for a whole year and get prepared.

“But this way it’s more fun. I get to finally go at it for a starting job.”

National Signing Day is Wednesday, and Weldon, a consensus three-star prospect who graduated in December from Tampa Jefferson High, is one of 10 early enrollees to get a jump on school and football before the remaining signees arrive during the summer.

Weldon’s other incoming competitor, four-star Ocala Vanguard quarterback N’Kosi Perry – a highly rated dual threat – won’t arrive until the summer.

“I think we can be really good,” said the 6-3, 204-pound Weldon, primarily a pocket passer who can also run. “Coach [Mark] Richt is heading the turnaround and I know the guys in my class coming in are really fired up.”

Weldon threw for 3,135 yards, 19 touchdowns and 11 interceptions his senior season, with another 368 yards and 11 touchdowns rushing. But his arrival in Coral Gables is something no one in his family would have imagined when he was growing up a diehard Seminoles fan.

Born in Tampa, he moved the summer before second grade to Tallahassee, where his mom and dad graduated high school and later graduated from FSU. He moved back to Tampa halfway through sixth grade.

“I went to every single FSU game for the five years we lived there,” he said. “It’s a little weird, and not exactly what I pictured, but Coach Richt absolutely changed the whole dynamic of everything. He’s not only a great coach, he cares about shaping you as a man off the field. I love the campus and I love being a Hurricane.”

Richt was Casey Weldon’s offensive coordinator at FSU and the families have know each other for years.

“So far, so good,” said Casey Weldon, 47, who played eight seasons in the NFL and owns a water mitigation company. “He absolutely loves it there. I have to remind him of my phone number.”

Casey Weldon said his son looks forward to “blazing his own trail,” though the dad is disappointed Kaaya left. “I would have loved Cade to be around him and have a standard set that was very high.

“But had Cade gone to Florida State, there would be constant comparison. I told him hopefully his class will be the one to turn it around again at Miami. When I came to FSU in 1987 the next 14 years we finished in the top five. When it starts again, man, it’s a lot of fun.”

Among the schools that offered Weldon scholarships were Kentucky, South Carolina, Wake Forest– and UM, he said, when James Coley was the offensive coordinator during Weldon’s sophomore spring.

But FSU never offered Weldon a scholarship, possibly because he tore the ACL and MCL of his right knee in the opening game of his junior season in 2015. As a sophomore he threw for 2,103 yards and 20 touchdowns, with nine interceptions, and ran for another 366 yards and four touchdowns.

His completion percentage that year: 66.5.

“One of the things that jumps out is his footwork,” former UM quarterback Steve Walsh said of Weldon in a UM video evaluating the early enrollees. “He was taught well at a young age. With a young quarterback, I’m always looking for their rhythm. He’s balanced, has a good base as he lines up to throw. So many young quarterbacks want to hop around.

“He’s athletic enough to make plays with his feet, deadly enough to make pays with his arm.”

Weldon knows that his injury “played a huge part” in stalling his career and the recruiting process. “A lot of schools wanted to make sure my sophomore season wasn’t a fluke,” he said. “But there were positive aspects I grew from. It taught me how much I love football and how it can be taken away from you in a second. It taught me to work a lot harder.”

Weldon’s mother, Lori, is a Realtor who described Cade as “very social, but not arrogant or obnoxious. Growing up with three older sisters has kept him grounded. He’ll make a good husband one day.”

And, hey, now this Hurricane is doing his own laundry.

“He took a selfie walking down the hall carrying his laundry basket,” Lori Weldon said. “The caption under the text: ‘I guess this means I have to do my own laundry, now, huh?”’

Mom’s reply: “Yup, you’re a big boy now, Cade. #’U’DoYourOwnLaundryAtThe’U.”’

One milestone at a time.

Mountain Cane

When you look at who excels in college the correlation between rating service stars and performance isn't very strong.

On average 5s do better than 4s, 4s better than 3s and so forth. But the key is on average. An individual team won't have average results. They'll do better or worse depending on their insights into recruiting, injuries, their coaching and development and a dose of luck.

The NFL drafts players at least 3 years older than these college recruits with lots of game tape, scouting, combines and workouts. The draft ends up being a crap shoot. Seems to me recruiting high school kids will produce even wider unpredictable results.

IF I'm right, this is one helluva class, tbh. Top 10 likely, top 12-13 for sure. Must win big next season to get into top 5 convo, but the DB talent and what our DB needs will be, we could be in for a top class for sure.

I believe we'll be taking 5-7 DB's next year and there is NO NEED to leave the state for them. Al Blades Jr will headline the class because of his name, but there's others who are elite that we need and will get.

1mg Of epi

Actually there is a huge correlation between stars and performance. While 5 star players make up less than 1% of recruits, they make up between 25 and 50 % of first round draft picks.

Recruit class rankings are also strongly correlated to wins.

30CINCO

Bigly correlation:

The 7-step case to proving National Signing Day rankings matter a whole lot

http://www.sbnation.com/college-football-recruiting/2016/2/2/10889856/national-signing-day-rankings-ncaa-football

Ohio_Cane

Part of the ratings by these sites are based on offers as well. If Bama, Miami, FSU, UF, OSU, etc offer a kid, his ratings will increase. It's a big formula that only partially includes that sites evaluation of a kid.

Ohio_Cane

It's a smart formula too, because you're using the experts (college coaches) evaluation as part of your formula

TonyCane

1mp, I looked at a four year slice on recruiting a couple of years ago. In the first CFB NC tournament, three of the four teams participating ranked were in the Top 5 in number of four and five star players recruited over the previous four years (Alabama, Ohio State, and FSU)

UMike

In 2008 we had 17 4/5-Star players... we would need to add 9-10 more tomorrow to reach that in this class. So even with this good of a class, it still isnt close to top 3

Ohio_Cane

Oh, I left Jordan Pouncey off my list, because it's pretty clear we're not on him any more. We cooled, and now it's down to Texas and Tenn. My pick is Texas.

Ohio_Cane

NSD update from CIS:

Update on Columbus Signing day
Sources confirm to CanesInSight.com that CJ Henderson will be signing his national letter of intent at 8 AM tomorrow morning. The Columbus administration and coaching staff have a policy where the players must fax their NLI at 8 AM on February 1st. There will be no picking up a hat or no announcement. The administration does not want to make signing day about one person, when they're multiple kids signing college scholarships tomorrow.

One person in the coaching staff did mention that since the colleges usually announce when they receive a NLI, Henderson might tell the school he's picking to hold of on the announcement so it doesn't ruin his moment. Meaning Henderson could announce tomorrow where he's going to go.

I'm expecting an announcement from Henderson tonight or tomorrow morning.

30CINCO

riz:

2 PM update

Henderson: Latest is trending in UF's favor here. Gators are trying to sell him that Rumph only has one year of experience coaching at this level, which seems to be bothering Henderson. A Columbus coach who just spoke with CJ just told me that he has not made his final decision and a Miami source just confirmed that he has not indicated his decision to them either.

Edwards: Brian Edwards is headed to UF as of right now but Miami continues to chip away. They are working hard to get him back on board and I expect for them to continue recruiting him through tonight and possibly into tomorrow morning.

Side note: I don't expect Tariq Carpenter to receive an offer from Miami, even if the Canes lose out on both Edwards and Henderson.

AfriCane

Honestly, I'm sick of losing out last minute to gators on some recruits when they've sucked the whole recruiting cycle. And then the recruits don't do shit there or they transfer.

I know some on here are skeptical on Edwards and have every right to be as the kid is an incredible flake but today at ITU he's gotten like 5 or 6 CBs from some people who are def tied in deeper then were are into this game so something's gotta be up here. Idk what but 5 CBs the day before signing day says someone has to know something.

IMO the biggest thing with this class is we are finally in the same vacinty of FSU and Clemson in the recruiting game. Not only that, but seems like we are putting some real distance between us and the rest of the Coastal. Hopefully this pays off in about 2 years, if not before.

BigWindyCane1

Edwards and Henderson's best chance to get developed and make it to the NFL is with Rumph. No doubt about that

Go Canes!

90% of our class looks to be signed or delivered tomorrow.

Overall it seems our two weakest and/or thinnest positions, OL and WR are getting addressed big time.

Only real whiff that sucks would be Henderson, who's speed and athleticism are very much needed.

McFarland and the other DB? Whatever. S. Fla pumps out kids like them every year and we will be fine.

Thank God after tomorrow we can start talking about spring ball and getting a feel for whether anyone on this roster will blow up at QB or if all our eggs will be in Mr. Perry's basket.

Will the Canes ever be relevant again?
Will the Canes ever win the damn ACC Coastal any time soon?
Will WWIN ever concede that STARS really do MATTER?
Today's the day we get some clue whether the future is bright or not.
TODAY is NSD.

FROM FORMER UM OL LEON SEARCY ON FACEBOOK:

Nearly 30 years ago to this day was my Signing Day. I was terrified, nervous and excited to be going to the University of Miami but I wanted the challenge to see if I could be great. So I'm sending this message to my son as my recruiter Don Solindger told me nearly 30 years ago in reference to Miami football: "Leon before you sign that letter of intent, I've got 2 things to say. If you're not good, you won't play and if you're not great please don't come."
