Some Hurricanes notes on a Wednesday:

• When UM snagged a commitment Tuesday from Class of 2018 four-star Plantation American Heritage defensive tackle Nesta Silvera, two Hurricanes assistants had particular reason to be happy: defensive line coach Craig Kuligowski (who will need to replenish his defensive front in the next couple of years) and cornerbacks coach Mike Rumph.

Why Rumph?

He says he feels pressure to help lure players from American Heritage, where he coached from 2013 to 2015 before Mark Richt hired him after Richt arrived 17 months ago.

“I put pressure on myself to do that,” Rumph told me on Signing Day earlier this month. “I want American Heritage kids all day. The school puts out really good athleticism, academically, conditioned kids all the time. It’s a place we should continue to stockpile because they’re so college ready.”

The Hurricanes have had mixed success with American Heritage prospects over the years, and Rumph’s involvement in recruiting at the school varies, depending in part on particular player’s position.

UM landed four-star offensive lineman Kai-Leon Herbert in this incoming recruiting class but lost out to UF in the battle for four-star offensive lineman Tedarrell Slaton.

Former Dolphins cornerback Pat Surtain, who succeeded Rumph as American Heritage coach, is a big fan of Richt.

“Good guy,” Surtain told me last August. “He knows what it takes to win. He will bring that mentality back. I wish him all the best and hopefully some of our guys can stay at home and make Miami what it used to be.

“He’s bringing that local flavor back. He’s getting the recruits that in past years were going to Florida State and Florida; he’s getting those kids to stay home. He’s bringing an SEC mentality, a little different type of football. He knows what it takes to win. The guy won at Georgia. Guys respect that. It’s a more physical brand, the way he recruits, the SEC recruits different, big up front on the o-line and d-line.”

Surtain said UM, before Richt, “missed out some kids we had in the past like Torrance Gibson, Tavarus McFadden, Sony Michel.” (Richt landed Michel and American Heritage four-star receiver Isaiah McKenzie when Richt was at Georgia.) “I’m sure he doesn’t want to let this crop get away.”

UM also is pursuing several other 2018 Heritage players, including Surtain’s son, Patrick Jr., and cornerback Tyson Campbell.

Rivals rates the five-star Surtain as the No. 1 cornerback in the nation and the ninth best overall prospect. The four-star Campbell is rated the 13th best cornerback in the nation and 101st best prospect.

• Rivals rates the 297-pound Silvera as the 22nd best defensive tackle in the 2018 class.

UM is in good shape at d-tackle next season but needs to start replenishing because Anthony Moten will be a senior and Richard McIntosh Jr. and Kendrick Norton will be draft eligible after next season.

Local reaction: “Miami has gotten out ahead of the game in 2018 by laying the groundwork with the top kids in the next class while they were recruiting in 2017. You would never have known they were not all from one class. They have done a great job blending the 2018 kids with the 2017 kids and using those relationships to build momentum for the program. It is getting back to the point where the kids are recruiting each other and that was a hallmark of the Miami program through the decades where Miami was dominant.”

Baseball is still a thing? Huh! Who knew?

Dude

Big Windy,

I'm gonna need your report on Tyson Campbell ASAP, because from what I've seen, that kid could be 1 and done with the right coaching. I think he could be the best CB on our roster this year. We must land him I think.

Dude

How do the athletes in SoFL keep getting better. Seems like every DB is 6'0" now and can run, and there's a dozen of them. We're gonna get 4 or 5 of them this year I think and 2 more stud WRs to boot. I also suspect another 4 star RB will sign on. Top 5 class is in the making.

Dude

There is no way we can keep all of the DB talent in Miami this year, there's like 20 kids at db that can start at every school.

Dude

At WR give me Mark Pope & Elijah Moore. Pope can be a true number 1 like AR, although not as fast, Moore is another STA Dorsett type burner.

Dude

My list of needs.

2-3 RB
2 WR
1 TE
3-4 OL
2-3 DT
2 DE
2 LB
5-6 DBs, S & CB

Of these kids we always need to be looking for 1 or 2 KR/PR guys. 20-23 elite prospects. Its looking like the 3 star kids will be very minimal for 2018. Time to own the Coastal and end FSU's streak.

Dude

Would you rather go 10-2, beating FSU but losing out on the Coastal, or go 10-2 losing to FSU but winning the Coastal? I think I'd rather beat FSU.

Dude

And finally, if we can nab James Cook, f*ck yeah! Kid is a great RB. He deserves his 5 star rating.

CoCane

Dude,

I forget where I saw it but the staff wants 6-7 DB(we're going to have transfers), 2 TE (after next season we'll only have 3) and 3-4 WR...

CoCane

I think they will bring in 1 QB also.

TonyCane

Dude, if I had to go 10-2 I'd take winning the Coastal scenario. Then hopefully beating FSU in the ACC title game and moving on to a premier bowl game

James is Dalvin Cook's brother. Don't see him coming here.

Not exactly a ringing endorsement for who's on campus now:

Mark Richt on finding a new Hurricanes QB: ‘It may take a minute’

Matt Porter
February 17, 2017

If you think Malik Rosier has a leg up on the Hurricanes’ quarterback race by virtue of his game experience, think again.

Entering spring drills — which begin after UM spring break ends next month — Mark Richt doesn’t think Rosier, who has played in seven games and started one in his three years on campus, or any of Brad Kaaya’s returning backups are any better than the other.

And even if Rosier beats out the other five quarterbacks competing for the starting job this fall, there’s no guarantee he’ll remain the starter. Jack Allison could take it, or Evan Shirreffs, the two talented recruits on the way or even walk-on Vincent Testaverde, in a stunner.
If I
This sort of thing is on Richt’s mind often. His mind would be clearer, though, had someone put on a QB-in-waiting performance in practice.

“I think about it a lot,” he said on WQAM on Thursday. “I told all the guys that were behind Kaaya – we all knew Kaaya was going to start. It was pretty evident. I would have liked to see somebody try to beat him out, but nobody thought much of that.

“But it was like, this second-team position is huge. I mean, somebody could have been in the catbird seat, waiting to be the guy, No. 1 going into spring. That never happened. I never saw one guy separate himself from the group.

“Now does that mean it’s a bad thing? Not necessarily. You might have three, four guys that are pretty darn good and I can’t tell which one’s which. But the bottom line is, I think it could have been more settled if somebody would have truly established themselves as the No. 2 last year.”

With freshman Cade Weldon on campus and ready to play this spring, and highly touted freshman N’Kosi Perry arriving “probably May 22,” Richt said, the coach expects he won’t know a starter until the second scrimmage of fall practices, or around Aug. 19 or so. But the starter Sept. 2 against Bethune-Cookman may not be in there when Miami visits Florida State on Sept. 16.

“Whoever starts, hopefully they take off,” Richt said. “Sometimes they don’t, and another guy might get his chance. It may take a minute. They’re all at least anxious to do right.”

More from Richt on WQAM:

What excites him most about who’s coming back?

“It’s hard not to get excited about the front seven on defense,” he said, “and I don’t want to brag too much about them because that just sets everybody up for expectations that are too high, but – we have a solid group of guys that can play.”

On recruiting:

“I can promise you over half” of Miami’s 24 signees will play, Richt said, and “maybe a few of them will end up starting.”
