EAST LANSING – Jim Larranaga knows Tom Izzo well.

So well that he has beaten the Hall of Fame coach twice.

The first came during the 2006 first round of the NCAA Tournament, the start of a dramatic run to the Final Four by Larranaga’s George Mason team.

The second came five years ago in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, in Larranaga’s second year at Miami (Fla.).

This time, Larranaga arrives as the favorite with the eighth-seeded Hurricanes as they face No. 9 seed Michigan State on Friday in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Tipoff is about 9:15 p.m. ET, and the game will be broadcast on TNT.

“So maybe this is good luck, because we were the higher seed then. Now, we’re the lower seed,” Izzo said Sunday night with a grin. “Jim’s a good coach, he’s a guy I’ve known for a long time, a good guy. He’s done a good job there.

Izzo said he’d might use that George Mason game as a slight motivation for his players to show what can happen in the NCAA Tournament, but not much else. Larranaga, on the other hand, got some early bulletin board talk from an unexpected source – which, in turn, might give Izzo something a little more recent for his own locker room.

When the NCAA Basketball Selection show on CBS revealed the pairing, analyst Seth Davis tipped his hand that he liked the Spartans to beat the Hurricanes and advance to most likely face No. 1 Kansas in the second round Sunday.

According to the Palm Beach Post, that comment irked Jim Larranaga, who was at a watch party on campus at Miami’s Rathskeller bar. The newspaper said Larranaga stood up during the commercial break and addressed the crowd, asking if those gathered heard what was said.

He then reportedly said to the crowd, “I guess he's never seen us play,” and followed it up by asking the party to join the Hurricanes in Tulsa because “it'll be us vs. Kansas in the second round.”

The Hurricanes played a tough schedule in the Atlantic Coast Conference, with all but two loss coming in their seventh-place conference finish. However, Miami also defeated North Carolina, Duke and Virginia. Seven of the Hurricanes’ losses came against teams ranked at the time and nine of them came against teams in the 68-team NCAA field.

Senior guard Davon Reed, a third-team All-ACC selection who is 6-foot-6, leads a guard-heavy Miami squad at 15 points a game, along with 4.8 rebounds. Two others, 6-2 Ja’Quan Newton (13.4 ppg) and 6-5 Brian Brown (11.9), also score in double figures. The Hurricanes have five players 6-8 or taller, with 6-8 Kamari Murphy getting 7.3 points and 7.5 rebounds a game.

“I think we had a little better season than Michigan State, but they have the name Michigan State,” Murphy told the Miami Herald. “Miami’s always the underdog whether we’re winning a lot or losing. It keeps the chips on our shoulders, keeps you motivated.”

Miami has a really good chance with 5* TE Brevin Jordan. 6'3" from Las Vegas.

Go Canes!

Again for the insomniacs:

Izzo is on the Mt. Rushmore of modern day coaches and Sparty has been as guaranteed a Sweet 16 pick as you'll find.

This first game will not be easy imo.

Old Skool

Thanks for the insomniac info

Go Canes!

No question Richards was the best freshman receiver in the country last year:

What's good Legion/Canespace? Long time no post; I leave the blob for a while and everyone has all the sudden stop posting because of this, lol. So, what is going to take to bring some activity back on the blob these days? Un-banning Lurker, lol. Well, I'm back! So, recognize and acknowledge, lol. Later!

Boy, did a lot of prognosticators and recruiters underestimate Richards! How was he ranked #48 before the season? I watched him play in that first game against FAMU, and it was obvious that he had the talent to be the Canes #1 receiver.

I bet There are a lot WRs on that list #1-48 thinking, "Man, I should have gone to Miami!" Glad we have CMR and Duggans recruiting and developing receivers in Coral Gables.

Go Canes!

There's no such thing as bad publicity.

Alex D

Richards outplayed two other Canes receivers on that list (Sam Bruce and Dionte Mullins) rated higher than him. Based on this result, If I was a recruit on Phil Steele's list for 2017; I would welcome being placed near the bottom of his list.

Yeah, good thing we have some coaches that can close. Folden would've absolutely, positively lost Richards to Bama last year.

CaneRock

And Thomas should be top 5 on that list...and Harley should at least be in the top 20.

Terrance Sullivan

Lol like Trump got credibility himself. Both Trump and the media doesn't have any credibility. But some will act like Trump is the greatest thing since sliced bread lol. Anyways. Go Canes! Beat Maine!

CaneRock

LOL...look at Terrance talkin' POLITRICKS! But I feel ya' Terrance, I feel sorry for those folks in WV that think He's brining coal back. Those people don't give a damn about no Rachel Maddor or no phuckin' wiretapping.

TonyCane

Have any of you watched Friday Night Tykes? I find it particularly interesting in that it partially takes place in my area (Austin). Monday's episode "Aduts Ruin It" was singlehandedly the most epic, self inflicted loss by a team (specifically the coaching staff) that I have ever seen. They go into the came saying that the refs robbed them last year and were in favor of their opponents (Florence).

With 28 seconds to go Florence takes over at their 20 yard line, down 4. Then this happens:

-Florence scramble for 14 yards, out of bounds
-San Antonio assistant coach called for sideline infraction, 15 yards
-Florence scrambles for first down, clock mistakenly expires (it should have stopped to allow for movement of chains, ala college). San Antonio assistant coach argues with refs, is called for penalty, another 15 yards lost.
-San Antonio blitzes on next play and sacks the Florence QB (who we will be hearing about in a few years). Game seems to end, but San Antoniondoes notnrealize they were offsides on the blitz. A 5 yard penalty is compounded with a 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct foul
-With no time left, Florence QB scrambles for a touchdown

Game lost by a San Antonio staff who complained about the refs before the game, kept complaining, and were rewarded when they self fulfilled their fears by angering the refs.

Go Canes!

I don't think he's the greatest thing since sliced bread.

I think he has some very good ideas and some really bad ones. I also think personally he's a buffoon.

CaneRock

TonyCane...last episode I saw, was the one where the coach assaulted that kid. Some adults do ruin it for the pip squeaks...sad. But on another note, that Outlaw team would get smashed in South Florida.

VA Cane

TC I was thinking the same thing, meant to blog about it. Those coaches are fat dumb stupid and lazy. Cannot get to practice on time, then yell at the kids. They abuse those kids....thats not how you coach. I yell now or then...to get attention of my guys....sharp short crisp HEY! Those guys never played, have no clue about fundamentals, developing kids, getting them to push themselves. They abuse those kids. Then to argue with the refs like that....stupid. I feel sorry for the kids.

Trump, Dems, Repubs....heck all of Washington have no Cred.....this country's leadership....is a joke...this system is a joke.....its about the rich and wealthy.....nothing gets done....lots of talking hearings, committees.....but no progress or change. It never will. I love USA...but I hate the government...it could work if people put differences and politics aside....get things done for us....you work for us dickheads!!!! Sad leadership....bunch of stupid old white guys!

CaneRock

Almost forgot, I think VA Cane's team would smash the OLs also.

Methinks you mean funereal. Lugubrious and sepulchral would also work if sesquipedalianism is your wont.

TonyCane

RCCF, yes there was definitely some gray there with Chris. My impression was that they did not like the SA team and the refs were in favor of Florence. The question is, was it the coach's attitudes that led to this? Chicken or egg argument. Obviously they should be impartial, but people are people. I read once that after Allen Iverson criticized NBA referees, they spent the next few weeks calling everything possible against him. I think that was in play in that game.

Not to talk politics, but the country was based on building American aristocracy. Our founding fathers were all wealthy and powerful. Each and every person who signed the declaration of independence was powerful and influential in their own right. So sometimes we have to realize this country is what it is and demand changes by disrupting the circle of wealth into a more distributed system, but then again, I don't claim to know much :).

Dude (Operating Insomniac Level 8)

Nothing political about Maddow being a moron. What she did crosses over politics into general stupid news of the day. Everyone is talking about it.

Ive heard that when you get to OIL9, you never have to sleep again.

Old Skool

Here are other possibilities:

The Biphasic Schedule: Two three-to-four-hour sleeps with an hour of awake time in the middle.

The Dymaxion Sleep Schedule: 30-minute “naps” every 6 hours.

The Uberman Schedule: Six 30-minute naps per day.

The Everyman Schedule: A daily three-hour sleep plus three 20-minute nap

Don't forget the purpose of sleep is to remove waste from the brain cells. Which is I guess is why when you're high and up all night, it's referred to as 'wasted'

Per PBP, Kaaya loves the U: ESPN posted two videos with Gruden, the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach, and the former Hurricanes quarterback. First, Gruden asks Kaaya about his first college start, when Louisville smacked him around in a Sept. 1, 2014 loss.

“This is a tough way to start,” he said. “But I learned a lot. I knew there would be times were I’d have to take shots and I wasn’t going to feel great. But at the end of the day, this ‘U’ means a lot more than my body, than someone else’s body, than anyone else around me.
