EAST LANSING -- Michigan State and Miami may have never played in the NCAA Tournament, but these two coaches have.

Tom Izzo and Jim Larranaga faced off in the first round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament, when Larranaga was the head coach of George Mason.

The No. 11 seed Patriots won that game by 10 over No. 6 Michigan State, in what was then the biggest tournament upset loss in Izzo's tenure.

What Larranaga's team did after that, though, made the Spartans' upset loss look mild. George Mason went on to upset North Carolina, Wichita State and No. 1 seed Connecticut to reach the school's first Final Four. They were the first mid-major team to reach the Final Four since 1991.

Eleven years later, Izzo and Larranaga will face off to start a NCAA Tournament run once again, when No. 8 seed Miami and No. 9 seed Michigan State play on Friday in Tulsa in a first-round game.

Here's a look at Larranaga's new team, Miami:

Location: Coral Gables, Fla.
Enrollment: 16,848
Nickname: Hurricanes
Notable people: Dwayne "The Rock Johnson" Johnson (actor, professional wrestler), Ray Liotta (actor), Sylvester Stallone (actor), Gloria Estefan (musician), Enrique Iglesias (musician), Ryan Braun (baseball player), Michael Irvin (football player, television analyst).
Last tourney appearance: 2016
Record: 21-11
Tournament history: 7 appearances, three Sweet 16s (2000, 2013, 2016)
Coach: Jim Larranaga (139-68 in six seasons, 609-402 in 33 seasons overall)
Rankings: NR in coaches poll, NR in AP poll, No. 32 on KenPom, No. 42 RPI
Best win: vs. North Carolina (77-62 on Jan. 28)
Worst loss: at Syracuse (70-55 on Jan. 4)
Common opponents: Rutgers (W 73-61 on Nov. 30), Duke (L 70-58 on Jan. 21, W 55-50 on Feb. 25)
Bid: At large
Of note: The Hurricanes bring a resume of three wins against Associated Press top 15 teams (Duke, North Carolina and Virginia) and no truly bad losses (none outside of the RPI top 100.) The Hurricanes have a trio of double-digit scorers in Davon Reed (15 ppg), Ja'Quan Newton (13.4) and Bruce Brown (11.9). Bruce Brown recorded a triple-double as a freshman and scored 30 against North Carolina. Reed earned third-team All-ACC honors and a spot on the conference's all-defensive team.
Starting lineup: G Ja'Quan Newton (6-1, 187; Jr.), G Davon Reed (6-6, 220; Sr.), G Bruce Brown (6-5, 190; Fr.), G/F Anthony Lawrence (6-7, 210; So.), F Kamari Murphy (6-8, 220; Sr.).

Considering there's no players on the roster listed taller than 6'9", it should be a blow out.

As for round two, I'd normally shake my head in agreement here but we're one season removed from a middle seeded former Big East/now ACC team going on a surprise final four run so if they don't play as soft as they did against Iowa State, they'll have a chance to trade buckets with less than a minute to go with the top seed chasing that upset.

Or they could let the recruiting blunder from down under shoot them right out of another game from anywhere other than the free throw line in foul extension situations as he is wont to do every time he gets minutes . . .

I bet if Miami had a mens soccer team, you all would be singing a different tune. Especially if it were as successful as football. 😊

Miami NEEDS a men's soccer team...

Old Skool

In the ERA of Title IX, another men's team is very hard to pull off.

Um. No. Soccer is beyond boring. The U has an ice hockey team though :) It is more like a club, kind of like their rugby team.

TonyCane

Soccer is the perfect sport to replace football in 50 years after it is rendered a niche sport that colleges cannot afford to maintain due to concussion lawsuits.

Old Skool

I don't know about that CTE has been found in soccer players too. Too many headers, I suppose.

Besides in 50 years, we'll all be playing virtual fantasy football anyway, selecting top players over the decades from your favorite team and then playing against other people's selections from other teams while you play quarterback, call the plays or have the computer do it for you.

HawaiiCane

Old Skool, I could be wrong but didn't you just describe what EA Sport's Madden video game series is?!?!

Go Canes!

Izzo is on the Mt. Rushmore of modern day coaches and Sparty has been as guaranteed a Sweet 16 pick as you'll find.

This first game will not be easy imo.

Old Skool

I've never played EA Sports Madden, but I was referring to something immersive.

Do they have Madden for the virtual realm that interfaces with something like Oculus or Vuzix?

Something where you become part of the team. You're on the field and can look around at your fellow players or the people in the stands or the sky above or the grass below and the audio perspective changes with the video perspective. Where otherwise you can choose to stand on the sidelines and look at the action from a distance, hear your OC speak in your ears from up in the press box, call a play or turn to a player and send him in.

Not immersive VR.

If they took porn off the internet there would be 2 sites still getting traffic:
1) www.canespace.com

2) www.brinbacktheporn.com

Thanks Coach L for vaulting the Canes out of the NIT Zone.....

In all honesty... soccer will have a hard time being popular in America because American universities cant build relevent programs. All of the best players train overseas at incredibly young ages.
