6:24. That ain't insomnia. That's early bird. Insomniacs need to be up at least 2 hours before sunrise. And there can't be any logical reason to be up at that hour. For instance today, it was 4:00 AM with no alarm. I can't blame it on Taco Bell or Little Caesar's just God's will. Tomorrow, I have a 6:20 AM flight. Alarms will go off at 4:30, I'll be up, but it won't be insomnia.

CR, I like the Sherriffs/Ryan Williams comparison, with the differences being RW was not as mobile but RW was a little more consistent and accurate on this throws.

But the QB position will be won by the QB who shows the most promise in CMR's offense. If Perry is the guy, CMR will know it by the middle of Fall camp. CMR probably will not start Perry to begin the season, but if the starter struggles, Perry will be ready.

But Perry is a tall, very skinny QB. Perry has a great arm and all the raw tools to thrive in CMR's offense. Lamar Jackson demonstrated that a mobile QB can be very effective, even if his passing skills are average. Instincts are as a QB in an option offense are critical. Perry has a better arm than Lamar Jackson. Perry may not be as fast as Lamar Jackson , but he is close. More important, Perry appears to have the instincts and vision to make the CMR offense very explosive. We will see.

If Perry performs well in practice, the players will also lobby CMR to put him in, and coaches do sometimes listen to players when their requests make sense. A good QB also lifts the confidence and spirit of a team both on offense and defense.

You're right Soup, how can I forget. If Allison, Weldon, Perry or Sherriffs want to start, he MUST hire Epi, CR, VAC, TSully, Old Skool, Hassan or another Canespace street agent. Otherwise, he won't have a chance to see the field

Why Miami Hurricanes aren’t changing DeeJay Dallas’ position yet; Richt on RB depth situation
Matt Porter
April 11, 2017

CORAL GABLES — Miami coaches playfully argued last winter who would get to coach him first. Ron Dugans was the lucky winner of DeeJay Dallas’ services.

The true freshman from Brunswick, Ga., a high school quarterback with a multitude of offensive and defensive skills and a knack for scoring touchdowns, started his UM career learning how to play wide receiver under Dugans. The Hurricanes have been quite pleased with the call. Dallas was shown in a school-produced highlight video from last Saturday’s scrimmage making two tough catches. He has drawn steady praise from coaches for his ability to find the ball and secure it.

But the reality is, Miami’s running back room isn’t as full as the receiver room. This spring, the Hurricanes are down to two healthy running backs on scholarship: junior starter Mark Walton and sophomore Travis Homer, primed for a larger role in his second year.

Mark Richt, however, isn’t ready to shift Dallas, a speedy, shifty 5-foot-10, 200-pound ballcarrier, into a new role.

“If we didn’t think [Trayone Gray] was coming back, if we didn’t think [Robert] Burns was coming back, if we didn’t think there was any hope of anyone else joining us, then he would probably be the first guy on the roster to do that,” Richt said Tuesday. “But at this point, we didn’t want to jack him around, learn all this, then go to receiver. We’re trying to let him learn something.”

Richt said running back typically has “a little bit less of a learning curve” than receiver, and UM could train a willing learner like Dallas relatively quickly. “But our goal is not to do that,” he said.

Defensive coaches who spoke on signing day said it was possible Dallas, who also has trained at punt and kick returner this spring, could play defensive back down the road. But that seems unlikely this year, with grad transfer Dee Delaney, junior college transfer Jhavonte Dean and four-star prep standout Trajan Bandy joining the cornerback group this summer, and Jaquan Johnson, Sheldrick Redwine and others competing for time at safety. Dallas seems primed to contribute to UM’s offense (and special teams) now.

Gray, a redshirt junior, is performing individual drills but is not cleared for contact coming off last August’s ACL tear. Burns, a true freshman whose whose career at Miami-Gulliver Prep was plagued by injuries, hurt his shoulder soon after the start of spring drills and remains out. Richt said he believed Burns will return “in plenty of time for the season.”

UM is still interested in adding Clemson graduate transfer Tyshon Dye, who graduates next month.

Homer, from Oxbridge Academy in West Palm Beach, didn’t carry the ball extensively in the scrimmage because UM wanted to work on his pass-protection, commonly an area of deficit for young backs.

“That’s the thing we have to make sure he can do well,” Richt said. “I think he knows what to do now, and he knows how to do it, but you still have to be physical, even in pass protection. I think people are still kind of bull-rushing him a little bit. He’s got to learn to undercut block in a scrimmage, and when to man up and strike a guy and slow his charge and run him past the quarterback.”

Posted by: Go Canes! | April 11, 2017 at 12:37 PM

If Dallas is moved to RB, the Canes are definitely in trouble. I don't think that will happen though.

Burns is talented. I don't know if he will ever be healthy, but if he is, Burns can be a very talented addition.

Redshirt junior running back Trayone Gray has rushed for 145 yards and two touchdowns in six games in 2015 and has averaged 5.8 yards on 29 carries with three touchdowns in 10 games over his Miami career.

IMO Gray has been a bit of a disappointment to me, because I thought he had so much talent coming out of Carol City HS. I saw him break so many long TD runs against the best competition. I heard that Gray was a bit lazy though, and needed a lot of help to qualify.

I thought the new staff would be good for Gray. Gray's testing numbers last spring under Gus Felder had him as the fastest RB at 4.4, faster than Walton, Yearby and Gus the Bus. Gray is also the biggest RB (6-2, 235). But Gray's work ethic is not like Walton's. Perhaps, Gray will get a chance to show what he can do this fall. Gray has to gain the trust of the staff. We will see.

Gray is now participating in non-contact drills this spring as he makes a recovery from a torn ACL suffered in August causing him to miss the 2016 season.

Agreed. Davis is more of a traditional RB. Davis compares favorably to Cook. The Canes have two RBs in the 2018 class that look better than FSU RB committed to their class. CMR and Thomas Brown definitely picked the best two RBs out of South Florida, and along with Searls' OL classes, Lingard and Davis can be the foundation of the offense. The Canes 2018 class is a great RB class for the Canes, perhaps the best RB class in the last 15 years since James-Portis-McGahee-Gore years

The more I read about the draft, and the more have spoken with some NFL contacts, the more realize BK really should have stayed in school.

Per a Seattle, and friend in DC contact;
BK has great character and attitude, smart, honest, reliable, decent arm, learns... Consistent: in YPC..Comp %, yardage, rating up each year. TD/Int good....Excellent individual character solid stats!

Slow, immobile, deer in eyes of the rush, panics under pressure from D, takes a lot of sacks, does not fully grasp the progression chart, does not see down filed when pressured, does not play well against good or superior competition.

My guy says he really should have stayed in school, learn more get better enhance status. Does not think will ever be a franchise QB, but can start here and there, be good QB or solid backup.

I dont know about all that....Brady was a much lower pick than BK is projected. Then again.....

I wish he would have stayed in school, it would have given us much needed stability at QB and a chance for someone to gain experience for 2018. While Rosier is a nice kid, I do not see him as burning it up this year; it will be interesting, especially with the OL being questionable. At least Malik can move around!!! I think we can have a good year...If a QB steps up, if we can run with thin RB corp, and if OL might come together....this is odd...we will be very dependent on a fast tough hard aggressive mean ass D that stays healthy....when was the last time we could say that after the Fiesta Fiasco....and OSU made us look average in THAT game....
We just have to work with what we have and give it our all...sure the D will be ready....O got to step up...as a unit....people must want it!

Go Canes!

Allison not even mentioned. Don't think injury has much to do with it. Hope he finds his stride and works into the competition.

A bunch of UM football tidbits from Thursday, with only four practices (including two scrimmages) remaining this spring:

• Evan Shirreffs continues to make a strong push for the starting quarterback job, though nothing will be determined until late August.

“He has done lot well,” receiver Braxton Berrios said. “He has done a lot to impress. He has been taking a leadership role. Every day quarterback things. His timing, his rhythm seems to be better. His drops, his accuracy. He is really molding himself into a really good quarterback.”

What about Malik Rosier?

“Same thing,” Berrios said. “He is taking more of a leadership role, especially when he’s thrown in with the ones. Malik and Evan are really becoming better QBs. They both realize they are not backing up anybody this year, as of now. It’s their job to win. It’s nobody’s job to lose at this time.”

Linebacker Charles Perry said: “I like Evan and Malik, one of them to lead this team.”

Berrios has seen tape of quarterback N’Kosi Perry, who arrives this summer.

“Great athlete, but he will have to be a great QB to win the QB battle,” Berrios said. “He’s a tremendous athlete. He can do a lot of things, a lot of different things than some of the guys we have here. At the end of the day,we are going to need a leader. It’s a lot of shoes to fill with Brad [Kaaya]. But we’re not asking for another Brad. We’re asking for another leader,... another QB who can lead this team.”

Though the quarterbacks have different strengths, Berrios said: “It’s going to be more a QB trying to work himself into the system than the whole system changing. We put in a whole new thing last year when the new coaches got here. We changed little intracies this spring. We are not going to have a whole new offense this fall.”

Our Susan Miller Degnan will have a post shortly on what offensive coordinator Thomas Brown (pictured above) had to say today about the QB battle.

• Has Berrios discussed with coaches more of a role offensively? “No extensive talks. At the end of the day, I am going to earn it.”

BigWindyCane1

Samuel is a real player, make no mistake about it. Samuel can cover and make plays on the ball. But Campbell is the kind of CB that Rumph and DIAZ are trying to recruit for this defense. Campbell appears to have more athleticism and raw ability. You see him play, and he really stands out from an athletic standpoint. Campbell also is a real football player and doesn't shy away from contact, similar to the kind of Hurricanes Butch and JJ used to recruit.
