This one stuck out to me..

Hurricanes 4 star recruits, 2002 forward:

2002: 14
2003: 10
2004: 9
2005: 11
2006: 10
2007: 7
2008: 14
2009: 9
2010: 6
2011: 2
2012: 8
2013: 8
2014: 9
2015: 7
2016: 7
2017: 10
2018: 15 (as of today)

CM Richt pulled in the Canes first class with ten or more 4 star players in a decade this year, and he's following it up with our best class in this century.

Posted by: TonyCane | July 26, 2017 at 11:08 PM

The problem is not just the STARS, but the positions. Five 5 star recruits at WR do not equal a great team. QB, OL, DL, LB and CB is where it is at.

Absolutely. But it is improvement.

Go Canes!

UM announced that cornerback Ryan Mayes is no longer a member of the football program.

The school did give a reason in a two-sentence press release distributed to media Thursday evening.

Mayes, a redshirt junior from Miami Northwestern High, played in 11 games last season, primarily on special teams.

He was expected to challenge for a depth role in UM’s secondary, but was unlikely to start in a cornerback rotation that includes standout grad transfer Dee Delaney, junior college transfer Jhavonte Dean, four-star signee Trajan Bandy and returning contributors Malek Young and Michael Jackson.

While I think CTE is real, I think it's overblown as far is football concerned. Can't convince me that football is more dangerous than other combat sports like MMA & boxing. How many "punch drunk" football players have you seen?...I rest my case.

Posted by: CaneRock | July 26, 2017 at 10:39 AM

It's not more dangerous, just a matter of how many blows to the head u take. A lineman takes hundreds a week, every snap is a sub concussive blow. Aa boxer fights twice a year, and isn't full Ctn sparring everyday. Soccer is also supposed to be dangerous.

Question:

In pro sports, what increases the value of a franchise the most? Championships, players, the city? If its championships, why arent the Spurs a bigger deal. If its city size, how is Dallas worth more than both New York teams? Oddly enough, I think players do the most to increase a brand's value and prestige. Look at the Heat with and without LeBron, look at the Bulls before, during and after Jordan, but again, if thats the case, how are the Cowboys worth so much?

The Dude

I know McGregor and his team dont do a bunch of full contact sparring.

That is terrible, I LOVE soccer.

Look at the size of the fan base it generates outside the town or region. I don't have the numbers but the Cowboys probably draw eyeballs (To my knowledge, game attendance doesn't matter any more.) all across the nation. That's why Notre Dame can have make singular football deals. A global fan base matters as well. Houston probably increased the value of the team when it drafted Yao Ming. All of sudden, they had Chinese fans. Manchester United is valuable because people care about them in Australia and many more places. The key is how that fan base gets captured. It could be championships, marketing, personalities, network backing, etc. More than likely a combination of all.

One other correlation to the fan base comment.

Like music, team preferences tend to be made as a kid. Whoever's popular when your a kid, whomever you see growing up will likely determine who you follow later on. Witness all the local NY fans that pack the stadiums when the Jets, Giants, Mets, Yankees play in town, but refuse to go to their home teams other games.

CaneRock

Wesley McGriff new DC at Ole Piss, well since the 24th.

Go Canes!

100% correct.

Need further proof?

I still think David Lee Roth and Axl Rose are cool as hell.

CaneRock

Good damn post TD, always wondered about that myself. I think you can throw the Lakers in there also...they can go 0-82, and they'd still be one of the more premiere franchises in sports...ditto with the Yankees.

Go Canes!

Think arena and TV deals affect the value pretty dramatically.

Old Skool

I would agree. Media Market Size is a big determinant as well.

Alex D

What's good Legion/Canespace? Long time no post; will be back down in SoFlo sometime in early October and will try to catch a U football game.

Nice stuff guys. I think all of those things matter, but to me it seems that having and keeping a superstar or superstars does the most to grow the team's value. The contribute the most to growing the fan base, winning and making the team a happening. Being in a great market matters a great deal towards being able to recruit superstars also. You could say, overall a great market w/ superstars is the best, even more than winning multiple titles.

He maybe downgraded to a lower model as well at Crimson Pachaderym Car Leasing.

LOL, still counting expired eligibility rankings off a pay site desperate to retain subscribers as an inadequate substitute measure of who went where when and proceeded to do what as pros . . .

So useless, yet so predictable every, single, off season.

No wonder the usual gang of idiots who were fatso deep divers during the pyrite rain of error went all the way down to the worst loss ever gagging the chump all the way and his shitty little loser at QB too. They couldn't ever get away from gazing at their navel reflecting the pay site rankings long enough to actually watch college football games or pay attention to how the NFL evaluated players at the level they won't stop spouting ancient irrelevant nonsense about.

Sad.

Enjoyed the comments and info as always. You people are the best!

My Dad was a college AA and played a year for the LA Rams in 1951. He was the most alpha male I ever knew. When he passed I requested his brain be donated for study; in the end he did not want to go out anywhere...anxiety, nervous...he was never like that. He played HS college and Pro when the helmets were bad, no face masks....and he was a violent hitter. His brain study showed what I feared bad CTE. He was a violent player....and it took its toll. I was a smaller player....but violent as well.....and honestly I have never felt sharper or better. I coached it violently...it is a violent game! I would never change how I played or coached....my Dad taught and coached me. I would never change him or his ways or blame football. It is what it is...a violent game of hitting and hurting...your opponent and yourself.

Love CR bringing up Tatum....I was fortunate to know him as my godfather coached
D at Oakland he was and always will be...along with Rohan My Guy!!!...still got the picture on the wall signed The Assassin....he was a very compact strong 5 10 and he was around 205 to 215.....huge legs and forearms....great speed.....and a killer instinct....a will to kill.....force equals mass times acceleration with the will to kill in the brain.....The Assassin was the perfect creature
of impact....like the Great White Shark....or my fav Rohan!!!! I saw Rohan hit a VT player just as Ray Ray was closing in...Rohan knocked the VT guy cold.....and Ray took a huge hit too....got up wobbling....it was unreal how hard Rohan Marley hit!!!!!

VA Cane

I signed in so you all could see my little grand daughter in my pic.....thats who I coach now....her name is Lillian Gray Jones.......shes the apple of my eye now.....Old VAC has a soft heart when it comes to babies!!!!!

I am ready for the season.....when do the predictions come?

Soup and Co....aint it time to get the 12-0 bus out and start tuning it up?!

I am ready for a great year!!!!

SOUP

VA Cane...YUP, the 12% bus is in the shop getting a new interior and paint job for 2017. She'll be ready to roll come game time. ALL ABOARD!

OGV, cryptic as usual. That said, if you are going to show some metrics of improvement or decline, why not use Rivals or 247. Most of us - if not all of us - do not have the time to scout high school games across the country. So while there is regional bias and bias towards certain schools, a site like 247 can still give at least a partial indicator of a program's trend. At least most of the time - Kansas State will be competitive under Snyder no matter what.

As for Golden - I wanted him to succeed. I wanted him to have the highest possible success. I wanted D'No to be a defensive mastermind. I wanted Kayaa to win three consecutive Heismans. Just like I wanted Jacory Harris to win a Heisman every year - and wear that pink tuxedo and walking stick that he talked about bringing to the ceremony. Just like I wanted Larry Coker to be above reproach. Just like I wanted Shannon to succeed at every endeavor.

Why?

Not because I know them, or that I am personal fans. It's because if they succeed, the program succeeds. So I hoped against hope that things would get turned around under Coker, under Shannon, and under Golden. I'm hoping the CM Richt achieves the success that I wanted for the previous regimes. Because if he does, if Ahman Richards does, if Perry or Rozier do - we win national championships again. That's what I care about. That's the standard for this program. We've just been lulled into accepting mediocrity, into accepting a 9 win season as a good thing.

So I won't apologize for rooting for Golden, Shannon, or Coker, and looking for signs of hope that they could turn things around. At the same time I will give credit to those of you wiser here who immediately saw the faults in what previous regimes were doing and were proven right in each criticism.
