Canes vs Pimple.....

Go Canes!

Ariz: **The quarterback position is shaping up more and more to be an Evan Shirreffs and N'Kosi Perry race. According to program sources, Shirreffs appears more confident than he was in spring practice and seems to be trusting has arm downfield more than he previously had. N'Kosi Perry, who had been working almost exclusively with the second-and-third offensive units, received some first-team action in Saturday morning's practice.

A major positive with Perry that a few people have noted is how quickly he gets the ball out of his hands. There does not seem to be much hesitation in his decision making -- add that with the fact that Perry is the most gifted passer on the roster. I'd expect most of the first team reps at QB to continue going towards Shirreffs and Perry.

**There's been a ton of good buzz on freshmen receivers Mike Harley and Jeff Thomas -- and for good reason. Every Canes fan knew the type of speed each of them were bringing to the roster when they signed, but here's a bit more info on what each are doing.

Mike Harley has made big plays just about every single day of camp. Bombs, screens, posts, slants, you name it -- Harley just gets open. The criticism of him as a recruit was whether his smallish frame would hinder him against physical play at the next level, but Harley has shown that he gets off the line like a technician and it's tough for corners to recover against that sort of speed.

Jeff Thomas has shown flashes of what he can do but multiple people I've spoken to get the sense that he's only scratched the surface as far as what he can add to the offense this season. One tidbit that I found interesting when looking at these two freshmen receivers -- Thomas has been working almost primarily in the slot, while Harley is being used in more of a flanker role.

People are really excited about Lawrence Cager's return. He has a leg up on Dionte Mullins right now in that battle for the receiver spot opposite of Ahmmon Richards.

**Deejay Dallas is officially starting to get some reps with the running backs. Dallas will still be at receiver, but this potential twist has been rumored for months (first mentioned by DMoney on our spring practice podcast). The intriguing thing about Dallas' skill set is that he is looking really, really good at wide out, and Dugans has moved him around to essentially every role. Although his route running is a work in progress, his body control and ability to snatch the football out of the air have been extremely impressive to those who have watched.

It has become increasingly apparent in just the first week of camp that Dallas will have a role in the offense. He could also have tremendous value as a third-down back.

**When it comes to freshman defensive end DJ Johnson, two words you hear regarding him are "speed and motor". Johnson is sitting somewhere between 255-260 pounds right now. The eye-opening thing about him though his is speed, which some speculated whether or not would translate over from the high school track to the college field -- and it certainly has.

Johnson does not have the pass rush moves he needs moving forward, but he has made a handful of plays in the backfield based almost solely on his speed and relentless motor. Neither him or fellow freshman DE Jonathan Garvin will redshirt.

**Freshman CB Trajan Bandy has been a fit in Manny Diaz's defense almost immediately. The most notable observation I've heard from different sources is how quickly Bandy is able to diagnose plays and react. Bandy had a pick-6 during his first practice. Him and Malek Young will both see time in the nickel spot this season.

As coaches have noted multiple times already, Jhavonte Dean and Dee Delaney are both the truth and have been living up to expectations. Both are probable starters, but things could vary depending on the opposing team's personnel.

**Freshman safety Derrick Smith has the size to be an immediate contributor, which everyone knew. But what has been a bit of a surprise to some is how smooth his hips appear to be in coverage. He is not necessarily in the playing rotation at this moment, but he's

I cannot stad fakes like him....and his ugly brother in the WH!!!

BigWindyCane1

It will be great to see a mobile quarterback in this read-option and RPO attack. I expect Things to really open up for Mark Walton and he should have some very explosive runs each game, with the QB as a viable threat to tuck it and run.

We all feel confident that the defense will be a top ten defense, but I also think the offense can be very good with these weapons and a mobile QB. These weapons just need a little space, and the defense can't key on just one or two players. Every skill position play can make big plays. The Canes just need to keep turnovers and penalties to a minimum, and the Canes should score 40+ points per game

SOUP

Posted by: BigWindyCane1 | August 06, 2017 at 05:26 PM

I believe 35 points is the magic number. I recall reading several articles that teams that score 35 points or more win over 85% of games and at UM it was over 90%. But I am cool with 40 or more also!

SOUP

Last year UM scored 34 or more points in all of their wins except two, UM won with 27 against NCST and also won with 31 against WVU in the bowl game.

In the four games they UM score 19, 13, 16 and 27.

The defense rests.

raizecane

i finally came up to speed with technology as I just signed on to twitter fir first time ever. Soi my question is, what is a good source to follow regarding our Hurricane football team???

Terrance Sullivan

Raize I follow Susan Miller Degnan from Miami Herald, Christy Chirinos from South Florida Sun Sentinel, Matt Porter from Palm Beach Post, and then the rest of the other Canes stuff like Canes Insight, etc. But I follow the local beat writers. Oh and follow Joe Zagacki he is canesvoice and Blake James he is canesallaccess. Oh and of course follow Miami Hurricanes.

Terrance Sullivan

Last season we had 10 turnovers total in 13 games. Do that again this year and we will be great this year period.

CaneRock

CaneRock

No doubt Terrance, didn't know our TOs were that low. And if we can lower the sack total like you said, we in there.

Terrance Sullivan

Yes Sir Rock!

Terrance Sullivan

We were a plus 9 on turnovers last season. Meaning we recovered 19 turnovers and gave up the pigskin 10 times!.

thirstybuzzardcane

Pete Ariz is a must to follow as well

TonyCane

Get to an average margin of 15 pts and you are a national championship contender. Ditto with an average POints Scored of 40 or higher.

Dude

40 points per game? Put down the crack pipe, lol. 10 teams did that last year, which in my memory is the most in a minute.

At least half of those teams are air it out, no defense schools.

Unless there are serious injuries next year, or the offense really screws the defense, our D aint giving up 30 points next year. I just cant see it happening. Word is that our biggest concern (CB) is completely locked down by the new guys. I am fully confident that Miami's defense will carry them to the ACC CG.

The only question mark going into next year is offensive coordinator. The O is loaded with 4* kids and immense talent. Any OC worth his salt would get results out of next year's offense. With our D, it doesnt need to be dynamic, just quality & smart. The OC cant hang the QB out to dry, and cant run Walton into walls.

Dude

TSully,

I think we are going to be over that number but not by a bunch. Our D is gonna get their hands on some more though.

Ive said this a bunch in the past, look in the past at how opponents used to make mistakes against us just because of the pressure of speed. We will see that again next year through out the season as we started to at the tail end of the last. Now we can really sprinkle it in on O. Cant wait to see how many kids slip covering Richards, Harley, & Thomas. Meanwhile Herndon better make sure his hands dont fail him because he is gauranteed LB coverage all year as defenses cant afford a safety for him. Too many weapons... too many. Only the OC can hold us back.

Go Canes!

I dont think we are going to score 40 a game.

We have one proven running back, no proven quarterback, one proven big play WR and an offensive line that grew last year but was at no time great.

Defenses will key in more on Richards this year and Herndon is rock solid but wont be as explosive as Njoku was imo.

Think about it, If you score in the mid 20s just twice, getting to 40 is eally, really tough.

Dude, I should have put in the qualifier regarding 40 points that it has to be a legitimate program. A Miami, FSU, Oh State, or Alabama that has that average per game means far more than a Marshall or Hawaii.

Terrance Sullivan

LOL last year we averaged 34.3 points per game and gave up 18.5 points per game which is a 15.8 ppg differential. Also had a plus 9 turnover margin.

Evan Sherriffs received three offers - Columbia, Georgetown , and Miami. Now he has beat out Perry for starting QB job???????

NaliveCane

What's really confusing is that Sherriffs really wanted to go to Georgia and walk on but Richt said no because he had a weak arm and slow clumsy feet.

The guy wasn't even a two star recruit until Miami offered him because they had to sign a QB desperately.

Go Canes!

CMR is one of the best in the business.

Anything he's saying today has some type of larger motivation behind it.

He just let two non mobile QBs leave without much of a fight. He did that to start another one who's experience and resume pails in comparison to the ones who just walked?

Imo multiple players are getting motivated, kept humble or built up by those words.

The #1 thing with Perry is getting to know the playbook. That's the only reason why he won't start.

UMike

Go, I agree. Can't hand the job to Perry this early so hopefully some motivation. I can't see us winning many games if Sherriffs is the qb

Linder told Richt that he will be training this year while finishing up his degree and will go for grad transfer route after this season

CaneRock

Richt didn't offer Herndon at UGA either, and He's one of our better players.

And like I've said before, I wouldn't put too much stock into lack of offers at the QB position. The Broncos have a QB battle featuring 2 guys from Florida who had very little offers coming outta HS...Paxton Lynch & Trevor Siemian. And IIRC, Carson Wentz had very little offers coming outta HS, and He ended up being a #2 overall pick...sometimes you just never know.

The veteran defensive tackle announced his retirement Monday

BigWindyCane1

I think the defense will be better this season, so instead of allowing 18 points a game, I think the Canes will allow 12-14 per game on defense. I also think the Canes will score more from forcing turnovers and special teams (with more speedy playmakers). If that offense gets rolling with a smart, mobile QB, more speed, a much improved OL and a heisman/Doak Walker candidate in Walton, the Canes should improve on that 34 per game average. Another TD or field goal puts the Canes at 37-40 per game. Achievable

Kid only played half his Senior year due to a broken thumb so he may have missed a lot of camps where recruits get seen and "Starred up".

Here's what his UM bio says: Rated as a three-star prospect by 247Sports.com… Captured Most Valuable Player honors at the Georgia vs. Florida All-Star game… Posted an incredible senior season where he threw for over 2,000 yards, 39 touchdowns and had just four interceptions… Started just four games prior to his senior season… Competed in the ESPN Elite 11 competition… His older brother, Bryant, is a quarterback at UConn… Very successful in the classroom after finishing high school with a 4.0 grade point average, a 32 ACT score and was Valedictorian of his school.

Will the NCAA drop tha hammer on tha CrimiNoles

searing expos of how the multibillion dollar college sports empire fails universities, students, and athletes.

With little public debate or introspection, our institutions of higher learning have become hostages to the rapacious, smash-mouth entertainment conglomerate known, quaintly, as intercollegiate athletics. In Champions Way, New York Times investigative reporter Mike McIntire chronicles the rise of this growing scandal through the experience of the Florida State Seminoles, one of the most successful teams in NCAA history.

A finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for his Times investigation of college sports, McIntire breaks new ground here, uncovering the workings of a system that enables athletes to violate academic standards and avoid criminal prosecution for actions ranging from shoplifting to drunk driving. At the heart of Champions Way is the untold story of a whistle-blower, Christie Suggs, and her wrenching struggle to hold a corrupt system to account. Together with shocking new details about prominent sports figures, including NFL quarterback Jameis Winston and former FSU coach Bobby Bowden, Champions Way shines a light on the ethical, moral, and legal compromises inherent in the making of a championship sports program.

Beyond the story of Florida State, McIntire takes readers on a journey through the history of college football, from its origins as a roughneck pastime coached by nineteenth-century professors to its current incarnation as a gold-plated behemoth that long ago outgrew its scholastic environs. Illuminated in rich and disturbing detail is the hidden financial ecosystem that nourishes hundred-million-dollar teams, from the hustlers who recruit players for schools and the athletic departments controlled by rich boosters to the universities whose academic mission and moral authority have been undermined. More than pointing out flaws, McIntire examines their causes and offers hope to those who would reform college sports.

Here are the reviews. I wonder if the book will be dedicated to Jameis Winston

“Eye-opening and important....any honest reader will come away appalled―and rightfully so.”
- Kirkus (starred review)

“[McIntire] effectively weaves together emails, police reports, court transcripts, and interviews with whistle-blowers and victims....[He] summarizes the history of college sports and the social and economic culture of football in American universities…convincingly arguing that these transgressions are widespread.”
- Publishers Weekly

“Relentlessly reported, Champions Way is a rich, powerful, and at times chilling page-turner. More than giving us an exposé, McIntire serves up a first-rate narrative that will forever change the way readers look at one of the top college football programs in America.”
- Jeff Benedict, best-selling author of The System: The Glory and Scandal of Big Time College Football

“Investigative reporter Mike McIntire has written a smart and fearless exposé of the madness and corruption undermining college football. From widespread academic fraud to the sexual predators to the hypocrisy of college presidents, it's all here in shocking detail and highly readable prose. A timely and important book.”
- Gilbert M. Gaul, two-time Pulitzer Prize winner and author of Billion-Dollar Ball

“In a damning, taut narrative, Champions Way shows how easy it is for college athletes to game the legal system for their own benefit. In merciless prose, Mike McIntire exposes how nuisances like sexual assaults and fake classes are no match for the big dollars associated with a winning football program.”
- William D. Cohan, author of The Price of Silence

“College athletic programs are prisms revealing the priorities of our schools, and our society. In Champions Way, Mike McIntire focuses his first-rate reporting skills on Florida State’s football team―the good, the bad, and the ugly―and tells us what he found in a fast-paced detective story. Whether you’re interested in college athletics, higher education, or just a damn good story, you’ll love Champions Way.”

Defensive tackle Jon Ford, a local product from Dillard High School and Miami's lone signeee at the position, told CanesinSight that he's been given clearance to enroll this Sunday.

Miami remained optimistic over the last month that Ford would qualify. Yesterday, defensive coordinator Manny Diaz equated Ford to "a present under the tree that you forget about."

Ford would be able to practice beginning Monday, but is not allowed to wear pads until his 5th day of practice due to NCAA rules.
