GO CANES! BEAT GT!

TonyCane

Next up, Georgia Tech and its ponderous, boring 5 running back gimmick offense.

His Royal Dudeness

So far Georgia Tech has...

lost to a bad Tennesse team 42-41.

beat Jacksonville State 37-10.

beat a 3 loss Pitt team 35-17.

beat a 4 loss UNC team 33-7.

There offensive strengths play right into our defensive strengths. They cant bust our front 7 for long enough to be dangerous. We need to be focused and play well to get to 5-0, but we SHOULD win in Miami. I'm hoping there's a great fan turnout for this one.

His Royal Dudeness

We have no real threat until VT so long as we stay focused. Take care of business and beat VT, and the Coastal is ours. Notre Dame game, while always a game we want to win, isnt exactly a must win although, an undefeated regular season sure would accelerate our rise back to the top.

86Cane

Holy Moses!

TruCane81

Paul Johnson will NEVER beat Miami again.

Unless we hungover on the victory champagne next week.

Alex D

What's good Legion/Canespace? Great win today ... However, I would like to see this team play a complete game wire to wire this year. Just my take.

TruCane81

We gotta get our shit together.

Francois and Akers are gonna be hell to deal with moving forward.

TruCane81

Rosier huddled up his teammates and simply told them: "They gave us a minute, 24 seconds. That’s plenty of time for us to go score." Then he turned to the offensive linemen: "Listen, our receivers are killing them on routes. If you guys give me enough time, I promise you we’ll go down the field and score."

He ain’t Johnny Football, but this kid is for real.

Why the herbstreit hate?

Sarasota 'cane

He picked FSU on his show. He didn't think UM had been tested yet. I don't hate Herbstreit. He's not afraid to change his position if the facts warrant another look.

HillViewCane

Herbstreit has consistently picked us over the past decade and has been consistently burned. He may have lost more with us than any other pick. He probably was scarred from the past.

UMike

Dude, I think every team is a threat when we have those long stretches on O when we're sleep walking. FSU may not be the best team we see this year, but they're definitely the most talented. If we call the games right we should win out with VT and ND being tough games. I would like to see more Herndon and Homer on O and more Bandy on D

Aerocane

Mike
Totally agree
And I'm gonna say it: cager and Richards both looked weak, out of sync and like neither cared - they passed me off
I'd rather have a bunch of guys like berrios than prima donnas who just don't give full effort
Cager doesn't come close to making the play langham made.
PS where was Harley as a receiver yesterday?

Great win! So much fun! (I even had Gator fans high fiving me after that)

UMike

11-0 or 10-1 are definitely within reach and a birth in the ACC title game. This is almost uncharted waters us. For years we lost to FSU then went downhill quick, can this win do the opposite?

CGNC

FSU v. Miami is rarely a blow out one way or the other, it's just the nature of a rivalry game. glad we won and came out on top. That last drive was Brady-esque. Shout out to the O Line. Rosier had a good second half but the 1st was fugly. It seems it takes the first half to figure things out and that has been a pattern so far. I saw that h had more patience in the pocket the second half.

MVP = Braxton Berrios. What a game and season he is having.

VT will be a taaough game. We could run the table

CGNC

^tough. Not enough coffee yet LOL

thirstybuzzardcane

👆👆👆👆 Excellent point, Umike!

TonyCane

UMike, I think in previous years it was one of two two things: morale and depth. We went all in and with a thin roster emerged defeated and with a rash of injuries. With such poor depth in recents years in particular we did not have the resources to adequately handle the roster attrition from the FSU games.

That's key for us going into the next stretch of games - what is the status of Donaldson, Richards, and Walton?

thirstybuzzardcane

No way Kaaya beats FSU yesterday! Rosier legs is what puts him over the top!

thirstybuzzardcane

Agree CGNC! The OL stepped up! Big shout out to Gaynor for stepping up in place of Donaldson!

CGNC

Not enough attention being given to Rosier, waving and urging the FSU crowd on, before killing them.

Posted by: 1mg of Epi | October 07, 2017 at 07:58 PM

Haha I saw that. He never seems to let that stuff get to him. How about my legend of the fall Kendrick Norton playing guitar on Blackman's leg?

UMike

All we need is Homer and some Choc to beat GT, let Walton rest.

If Rosier throws that ball a few inches then the way it is an INT and we are having a totally different conversation. He had some bad misses early, but CMR trusted him and we came through.

UMike

Did y'all catch Berrios' "big time players.." quote after the game? Was a nice touch.

30CINCO

Rosier.......LEGENDARY!!

Go Canes!

Man what a game. Don't know what I was thinking when I said we'd win by two touchdowns.

As usual, regardless of record and even talent level, this game was a dogfight until the final drive and play.

Think what will stick with me the most was the gigantic set of balls CMR had calling back to back running plays to Homer on that final drive.

Talk about leaving yourself open to second guessing. If either one of those runs get stuffed and it changes the outcome of the game, every UM fan in America would be ripping him for those calls.

To me, that's the sign of a self confident legend completely unafraid to do what he thinks is right.

After 9 straight wins, a Top 10 ranking and a potential playoff berth on the horizon, it's getting to be impossible to argue he knows what's best.

Finally, I know Va Tech is our toughest remaining game, but don't sleep on the challenge the Irish will give us. That's going to be a tough, prime time game.

Terrance Sullivan

Proud of our Canes. Georgia Tech is up. Don't overlook anybody. I thought we would have learned that lesson by now but I guess not sigh. Feels good to knock down another streak ended the 10 year Bowl drought last year and this year we ended the 7 Year FSU drought. Feels good keep busting droughts.

VfB_Cane

I'm glad I didn't have anything to do with what happened on the field yesterday, because at some point I had lost faith. Luckily, those in charge and on the field never did.

Rosier will never be considered an "elite" QB, but he is a fighter who hates losing and was able to be at his best when we had our backs against the wall.

Biggest question marks coming out of this game are health (Walton, Richards, Donaldson, ...), OL in the running game and the secondary. Other than that, we seem to have fixed whatever needed fixing.

Hats off to the coaching staff and the players for a turnaround that seemed highly unlikely just a year ago.

Great posts!

Love to see homer and gray next week - REST Walton
Langham earned the start and playing time over 'if it's too hard I won't try' cager! Probably need to hold Richards out also -he didn't have IT at all yesterday; I'd love to see more Harley and Thomas
I'm not fearing GT - I think Pinckney will have a great game! Need to keep 58 off the field - slow, bad angles etc

HawaiiCane

Feeling invigorated today!!!

The'Canes did what they had to do. Plain and simple. This was a great win and momentum booster! Two things...

1. Aerocane, I believe that our wide receivers as a whole played poorly and definitely would agree about Cager, but Richards was the only one catching anything in the first half, plus they had McFadden on him nearly the whole time. Not to mention he probably had the HIT OF THE SEASON!!!

2. Count me wrong, but with the Oklahoma's loss to Iowa State we now own the nation's 2nd longest win streak at 9 games (should be 10 if we played Arky State)!!! Only second to Clemson at 11.

BEERicane

I don't see the problem with Cager. He should have made that catch in the first half, the rest of the balls his way were pretty terribly thrown. Also, how bad did we make McFadden look in that 4th Qtr? We were just picking on him and good ol DL - the legend- owned him on that final play. We just took it right at one of, if not the top DBs in the country.

Any one have the status of The Don? He's the biggest concern from an injury prospect, imo. Richards will be ballin shortly.

BigWindyCane1

Richards drew at least two defenders on every route, especially the safety over the top. They were determined to turn Richards into a possession receiver and not allow him to go too deep or make catches in space. That helped give others one-on-one opportunities.

Berrios stepped up. Big time players make big time plays in big time games. Cager didn't show me he was worthy of his targets yesterday. Rosier missed more throws than he should have. Some were bad reads and some were accuracy issues. Langham deserves more reps and targets.

There is a lot of room for improvement with this Canes team on offense and defense, so I think the Canes will run the table as long as they keep improving

CoCane

I credit Richards for waking the team up in the 3rd quarter. The big 3rd down catch on our 1st TD drive and followed that up with a nasty crack back. Those 2 plays lit a fire in the team...

TonyCane

I'm finally getting to see the game this morning - was at a 13 hour AAU tournament for my son yesterday in a town with limited wireless reception - I am impressed as anything with Braxton Berrios.

Go Canes!

Ruchards' hit. Damn!!!

I predicted a big margin of victory too.

I figured Richt would be streaky as usual.

What I was betting was Diaz was saving more agressive coverages for the true freshman qb.

When we press, it works.

Our pass rush is incredible. Why wont Diaz trust it and make teams beat us deep with the crew breathing down their necks?

Fsu offense is inept. They had no business scoring a SINGLE POINT.

Diaz nearly lost the game playing soft and blitzing unnecessarily.

I thought maybe the dline might be overrated. They are not. If we make the qb hold the ball, THEY WILL GET THERE!

Our run defense needs improvement but nobody can keep us off the qb.

We have to play more to the strength of our personell on both sides.

TruCane81

Run game will be fine. Fsu has elite defenders it was gonna be tough sledding regardless. We need to set up the run better like we did late in the game to be effective against good defenses.

30CINCO,
Canes @ 10th in the Coaches poll sounds very good. I love it.

Now, the Canes need to keep winning so they can stay there for a while. The Canes have the second longest winning streak in college football with the second longest streak belonging to the current national champ. The Canes deserve more respect, but respect tastes best when it’s earned, not given

All my nole friends are giving me shyt because we beat a crappy FSU team! Who do they think they've been playing over the last decade? You don't go 7-0 against good teams.

Miami's trajectory is headed up after years of decline. The team has a long way to go to be "elite", but at least they are finally headed in that direction. I think the 2019 season is the year we measure ourselves against the best in the country. Any success before that is gravy.

The Canes have some very positive signs in defense. The Canes lead the ACC in sacks per game (fourth in the entire country), second in ACC in tackles for loss per game (fourth in the country), tied for the ACC lead in turnover margin per game, and second in passes defensed per game. The Canes are also the only ACC team that hasn't given up a play greater than 50 yards. They are fourth in the ACC in scoring defense, but the Canes still give up a lot of yardage.

Bottom line? There are some encouraging signs on defense, but there is still room for improvement. Aside from Shaq and Pinckney, I would like to see a couple more LBs consistently make tackles, I would like to see the safeties that play opposite Jaquan Johnson Understand their assignments. Delaney is playing better, but I think Young and Bandy deserve more reps. I would also like to see what Dean can do. Aside from Joe Jackson's play against the run (which is probably nit picking), I have no complaints about the defensive linemen.

From CIS:
This is long. If you don't like reading a bunch of words, stop here, please.

In expectation of @HurricaneVision's screenshot analysis later in the week, I'll refrain from going too much into his territory and give a broader look. For some of you off the board, you know I've had an unhealthy obsession with breaking FSU's streak. It was physically ****ing me up the last few years. I watched them all summer and over the course of this season. While they did scheme up some nice calls, they didn't do too much unexpected, which makes sense considering they're starting a True Frosh QB.

Earlier this week, I posted in @DMoney's key matchup thread with a quick add on. You can find my key matchup discussion here: https://www.canesinsight.com/thread/recruiting/122921/3

- There, I started with Mark Richt vs Charles Kelly. I mentioned we were underestimating FSU's defense against our offense. For the majority of the game, that held true. On our last two drives, we came alive with incredible player performances. The results worked out, but I think there's a lot Coach Richt can still add into the offense. I'm not a fan of our route combinations, but I'll see that out of this thread.

- Limited on time, I didn't get into Manny Diaz in that thread, but expected better from him yesterday. He still did ok for the majority of the game, but there were some philosophical things I disagreed on. Some of you know I'm a supporter of zone blitzes. I am not a supporter of zone blitzes as the repetitive staple of a defense when it's impractical. Many times yesterday, it was NOT practical. In fact, I think @HurricaneVision's play review will show we sometimes did better when we simply rushed 4 and made the FSU QB make plays. We had enough to be relatively simple against them and dominate.

Again, while I appreciate zone blitz sprinkles, I don't want to eat a zone blitz steak for dessert. If you go back to my review of Coach Diaz (whose philosophy I'm a big supporter of and someone I think gives us a good chance overall), my concern was his desire to live off the blitz too often. I openly discussed with former poster GoldenShowers whether that was an issue of feeling like he needed it because of talent or not. Yesterday, we didn't "need" to blitz in some moments we did. It'd be unfair to say otherwise, as we got caught with someone like Trent Harris chasing downfield. Overall, though, as we'll get to below, he gave us a good enough chance to win against a good FSU offensive coaching staff and his players could have helped more, too.

- Malik Rosier. During the Al Golden years, I constantly said "there is nothing worse than losing conservatively." It was painful. I just wanted us to play with balls and go down swinging. I didn't get to watch Malik in practice this spring or Fall, so I had no idea what to expect and therefore stayed out of predictions about what he'd do. I had noted in previous years he was inaccurate when I had watched him in practice. He's still inaccurate at times and that is completely overwhelmed by the simple fact he takes chances.

Whether he costs us a game or not later in the season, I'll remember this dude as the MAN who broke the FSU streak. I saw some people calling him a "bytch" in the gameday thread. I don't understand this view. He runs for first downs and takes hits. He takes shots downfield. He's a tick slow in anticipation, but let's call out facts: he takes the chances needed to win games (and that's before the big game-winning throw). Probably the lasting memory I have of the game was Richt pointing to his own head telling Malik Rosier to "be smart" before our last offensive play. When FSU crowded the line, a friend and I told each other "just take a ****ing shot." He did. And, here we are.

- Mark Walton. I feel for the guy. I'm sure he wanted to show out here, but I think we can reasonably see he's hobbled. Saw it a couple times when he cutback and they were anything but sharp. Get healthy and be ready for VTech, please. He did give us a handful of great pass blocks, which is why I imagine Richt kept him in there over Homer.

Speaking of Travis Homer, he's up there as one of the top 5 most important guys in getting our W. Despite barely playing snaps. The runs in the 4th quarter were bigger than big. Breaking the tackle and getting the first down in that last drive saved critical seconds.

- Ahmmon Richards wasn't used as I'd hoped. He pretty much was sent out there about the same as we've seen and wasn't provided too many motion or mismatch opportunities. Memory says he was held a ton and also missed a couple plays, but we absolutely need this guy. If we're going to be trotting out relatively simple concepts and relying on fundamentals, then we need superstars like this guy. Hope his hamstring or whatever was hobbling him gets better quickly. He changes everything for the entire offense, as I said in the key matchup thread.

In the linked thread above, I said this: "If FSU is arrogant enough to toss Mcfadden at him in single coverage, I think Richards can have a breakout game against a "big name." I said this for a specific reason. Although talented, I think Mcfadden can be had. Big #81 helped reinforce that.

- I don't think we used Chris Herndon enough. He showed up in our playcalls when we desperately needed it, but this is something I believe we should establish earlier. He doesn't need to run long-developing routes.

- After the game, Lawrence Cager apparently said he'd played the worst game of his life. So, I guess I don't have to go in too deeply that he played small. It was disappointing. The big, flashy image he's projected needs to be matched by a guy who steps up in tough moments.

- In the linked thread above, my lucky guess happened to come to fruition when I said: A key player matchup to watch here will be FSU's Kyle Meyers. He is very talented. I'd like to see him forced to read combination routes or get naturally picked off inside because he can hang athletically with all of our guys and probably has an [athletic] advantage on Berrios. I think Berrios can beat him on the underneath routes, though. Get him in whip routes and moving across the field, please. This is a call to Richt to throw out everything he's got against this DBackfield.

The game basically came down to this matchup and we won because we won the matchup. Braxton Berrios will be a legend regardless of what he does going forward. Even draped in coverage at times, he made plays. The guy was laser focused and, as cheesy as it is to say, just wanted it more. Over and over. Amazing work. In terms of the bolded quote above about whip routes, I think it was arguably the most important play of the game. When we needed it most with time running out, Richt successfully called a whip route to Berrios, Malik put it on the money, and Berrios broke a tackle to get us in a position (the 25) to take a real shot. If that play doesn't happen, I doubt we toss one to the end zone and perhaps we don't even have enough time. It's the type of route I believe Berrios can consistently win, which is why I mentioned it before the game.

- Our Offensive Line needs help in the run game against talented DL like FSU. Luckily, we may not face too many more. I would have liked to see a few more max protection schemes, as I had hoped for in the matchup thread. I would also like to see more motion. To run the ball effectively against equal talent, I think we have to concede will need a little more deception.

- Our Defensive Line deserves a bunch of credit for keeping us in this game long enough for the offense to wake up. Frankly, I think their responsibilities should be simplified more often. When they were asked to rush 4, they mostly did their jobs, pushed the young FSU QB off his spot, etc. Just let these guys play. As I said above, I'm a fan of sprinkled in zone blitzes because I think the deception dictates to offenses. But, we don't need to rely on them and we don't need to consistently see Joe Jackson and Trent Harris chasing downfield. RJ Mcintosh played a great game. There were times other guys got the stat, but he made the play. Kendrick Norton also played well, and now probably has the outright record for most times held by an OL in a row. HOLY **** did that FSU team hold and claw. WOW! I mean, Chad Thomas' pads were almost taken off on one play.

- I've talked about our LBs on other threads. Zack Mccloud is my favorite (not best) prospect and he's struggling some. Shaq isn't making the splash plays we expected. Pinckney has stood out to most above the others, but if you watch closely he also has gotten caught in the wash. Overall, the perception is part factual based on plays not made and a perception thing based on what was expected. Coach Diaz also needs to help them out with simplification. I'd like to see us man up less talented teams more often. In coverage on poorly timed zone blitzes, our guys are just not tight enough with the Safeties to be successful. My general thoughts on the LB situation in this ongoing thread: https://www.canesinsight.com/thread/...cloud/123170/2
As I mentioned there, this is one area I expect to be fixed. Too many things in our favor here.

- The corners expectedly did fine in this game. It was a solid matchup for them considering the FSU QB situation and what FSU does on offense. Obviously, we have issues at Nickel/Safety. In the linked key matchup thread above, I mentioned this as a potentially critical matchup. Well, we almost lost the game because our backup Safety made a poor play on an FSU slot. On that disastrous play, FSU ran their guy in motion to the bottom of the screen. Whether it was a miscommunication or whatever, Knowles robotically played the #2 WR (inside guy) who had been motioned over. He became the third defender on an underneath player. He left the vertical route completely clean. It was just a blown play where the Safety has to stay over the top and understand game situation.

If Redwine had been in the game, I'd like to think this doesn't happen. But, such is football. Guys get hurt. We badly need him back! We have serious issues at Safety and it's actually hurting our LBs. Again, while I'm a Diaz supporter, this comes back to him. In a game like FSU, rely more on the front 4 and simplify the coverages behind it. I trust a lot of these things get cleaned up. I'm weary of our depth and Safety situation. It sends ripple effects throughout the defense.

- My biggest observation is we played to win. Maybe it's the stench of the previous staff and the 7 year curse. But, this philosophy change cannot be understated. And, despite any issues we've seen so far, we should be celebrating. Until tomorrow, when we go back to work and need to get up on GT quickly so we can protect our players from their bull****.

Think we wore them down?

TonyCane

WWIN, I think we wore each other down. But FSU seemed like it sustained far more injuries during the game than Miami.

LOL. It's like dogs that chase cars down the street not really seeing that the car turned the corner and is out of sight but they like to continue barking

Lol Sinister was calling for Perry doing the Game and was pissed Perry didn't get the starting job but want to act like he all Team Malik. Dude Stop Flauggin!

Great post Sin.

He knows what he is talking about.

Mark Walton will have surgery on his ankle, according to UM. Have heard that they fear he is done for the season.

BREAKING: Mark Richt says Mark Walton's season is over.

I'm pretty sure I watched Kaaya lead this team back in this same game last year. It wasn't his fault that XP was blocked. Even if Kaaya isn't "all that", I'm still not getting why he is being bashed on a UM fan page a year after he left the program. A program that still like Kaaya as was evidenced by the team reactions to him in Durham on the sidelines last week.

Says wait for the injury report.

Mark Walton get healthy and ready for the NFL draft young man. Thank you for your contributions to our Miami Hurricanes program. Canes Family.

Walton will be back next year.

Go Canes!

Come on man. This is a ridiculous statement.

What's wrong with that?

Who hasn't called for the backup to come in for the under performing starter?

And I challenge you TS to find any post where I'm upset, sadden, angry over Perry not being named the starter.

Sucks for MW I hope he gets well and goes to the league this year when healed.

It's HomerTime

BEERicane

I guess if your goal is to not get drafted, then Walton should enter the draft.

86Cane

Some of you will never get IT. Nobody here hates Kaaya. We just call it as it is even though he was a Hurricane. We take our orange and green glasses of and talk "truth to power". (Man I always wanted to say that even though I have no idea what it means?)

Do you think that FSU fans never criticized all those kickers who missed wide right, wide right, wide right and wide left? Child please! They will not even name their kids those first names after what those kickers did to the hearts and souls of Seminole fans.

I will bet you that every serious FSU fan can name every one of those kickers in their sleep.

Is Robert Burn READY???

Herbieibis

Didn't see much of the game as The Herb was in Chapel Hill scouting the Heels and Irish. UNC sucks and The Irish aren't bad defensively but they aren't great either.
Canes need to shore up the defense as I believe they are 64TH in total defense. To many chunk plays can inflate the rushing totals. Walton shouldn't have played but now the depth will really be challenged as we have to get the run game fixed. Rosey gets erratic at times and then he seems to catch fire at the right moment, thank God!

Go Canes!

We get IT and arbitrarily saying Kaaya played for FGs because he sent a text saying our kicker will be money if called is bullshIT.

The guy did the same think Malik just did last year, throw a TD for with the game on the line.

Why don't you get IT, you don't have to dog one of our own to build up another one.

Terrance Sullivan

Okay 86. If you say so. Us clueless silly people just don't get it huh. SMDH.
