I believe we will do just fine with Homer and any combination of Choc, Burns or Dallas. That's a backfield with 3 4-star players and one of the best athletes in Dade county. It will come together. Homer will run for over 100 against the wreck

If he keeps this up does he get drafted?

Honestly have no idea.

Think Burns will RS this season. Homer, Gray, Dallas will get the opportunities. Could even use Thomas in certain situations.

VfB_Cane

Also: the running back order at practice: Travis Homer, Trayone Gray, walk-on Crispian Atkins and freshman DeeJay Dallas, who has been a receiver for UM until now.

http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/college/acc/university-of-miami/article178020681.html

No idea what the problem is, but no mention of Burns indicates there's something not right with him.

Yearby and Edwards should be sore from kicking themselves for the last two days.
Nothing good ever comes from trying to avoid competition!

TheeMackJones

Now is the time of their college football life's. Because these young Canes have to MAN UP, and give the Canes some quality minutes. hUh. In other words, I don't expect to see these four Cane starters on the field this Saturday- Richards, Donaldson, Walton and Dee Dee. dUh. Well, MAY BE Delaney will play.

TheeMackJones

Posted by: Go Canes! | October 10, 2017 at 10:22 AM

DuH! Both Miami and mighty FSU ALWAYS have ' banged up ' players after they face each other! Even that FSU wide receiver Richards ' layed out ' may not play this Saturday. dUh.

WWIN

A) I'm not being hard on anyone. If we bring in a Top 100 RB nationally and he is totally healthy I don't find it strange to be disappointed if he doesn't contribute.

B) As is the case every week, The Miami Hurricanes win or lose, not Malik Rosier or Brad Kaaya. Plus, you have NO IDEA what would have happened had Kaaya stayed. Your obsession about making our team about one player is not only wrong, its bizarre.

Posted by: Go Canes! | October 10, 2017 at 04:26 AM

A) You conveniently left out the part where HE HAS NOT PLAYED IN THREE YEARS and just had surgery this year! Does it not cross your mind that his situation is A LOT DIFFERENT than a normal top 100 RB coming out of high school???

B) Three years body of work for Brad I'm pretty sure I know what he has to offer lol! So you don't know whether Brad would make this team better or not?

No matter what the future holds for Braxton Berrios he will always be the Ultimate Nole Killer!

TonyCane

GoCanes, that happens every time we play FSU. We emerge battered from it. The difference this year is that depth at most positions is better.

Unless Burns is not physically able to go, they should burn the RS. Better for him to establish himself as a known commodity this year than to enter next year as an unknown competing with Lindegard.

As gutty and clutch a performance as we've had here since our heydays!

Go Canes!

Brown says Burns not ready to play due to injury:

Some UM notes on a Tuesday:

• With Mark Walton out for the year, UM is comfortable giving lead back duties to Travis Homer, who is averaging 8.2 yards per attempt on 25 carries.

I asked offensive coordinator Thomas Brown if Homer is strong enough to shoulder a 15 to 20 carry load.

"No doubt," Brown said. "He’s as tough as they come. He’s in phenomenal shape."

But Brown said conditioning, and how the running game is going, will determine Homer’s workload and how carries are distributed.

Though Homer isn’t physically imposing in street clothes, linebacker Shaq Quarterman said, correctly, that Homer "is physical. He will lower his shoulder on you. We love that about him. The first thing you see is speed. He’s not small but he runs big."

Homer said he is 5 to 10 pounds heavier than when he arrived. "I’m a lot stronger."

• UM shifted receiver DeeJay Dallas to running back Monday. Brown said he will have four backs available against Georgia Tech: Homer, Trayone Gray, Dallas and walk-on Crispian Atkins.

Freshman Robert Burns "has a ways to go" to get healthy after a spring shoulder injury, Brown said.

As for Gray, "he’s looking better than he’s ever looked," Brown said. "We finally took the knee brace off. A 235-pound man that can run really fast when he wants to."

If this was still on Thursday instead of conflicting now with a prior scheduled family function that will be the deciding 'not this week' factor for me, I might have ponied up the $10 for the ticket to watch a high school offense run clock if they had been ranked. Instead it looks like I'll wait to see if the VT ticket is worth the extra money to start November before I'm spending any cash to watch a home game. The ND game is going to be the best game to watch in stadium but the prices to get even cheap seats wold be better used on a potential freezing December night in Charlotte's costs of attendance Noel so . . .

tSully I don't think the score is that close. This isn't a high powered passing team that gives us fits, it's the same running attack we see every year. I think Rosier comes in with a new confidence (see end of the game when he was taunting the FSU crowd) and has a great game. Homer gos for over 100 and we win by 17 or more.

Barry:

• Of all the positive changes from the Al Golden era to the Mark Richt era, this is among the most encouraging:

This is a far better second half team.

During the final year and a half of the Golden era (all of 2014 and the first seven games of 2015 before his firing), UM outscored teams by just two points, 236 to 234 in the second half.

During the first 17 games of the Richt era, UM has outscored teams by a whopping 333-128 in the second half. Miami has been outscored after halftime only twice in those 17 games.

During this ongoing nine-game winning streak, UM has outscored teams 196-59 after halftime.

UM coaches made smart adjustments at halftime of the FSU game, using more four-receiver sets and spread elements and running more read options with Malik Rosier and more short, safe passing plays to their playmakers.

I asked Quarterman how often a defensive adjustment by coordinator Manny Diaz has made a real difference in the second half.

“About every game,” he said. “Even if we’re up at halftime, he sees things in the first half we don’t see. He makes awesome adjustments along with the rest of the staff that puts us in better positions to make plays in the second half. We come out even stronger.”

Offensive tackle Kc McDermott said something else has changed, too.

“The only thing you can say has changed is the way we approach the game,” he said. “I was talking to my family about this. We had the same situation like this against Florida State two years ago my sophomore year and the mindset was different.

“There was not once in this game where we sat there and said, “We might lose this game.’ We always sat there every time we came on the bench and said we’re going to be successful and win this game.”

Have coaches instilled this?

“It’s something that has been instilled not just by coaches but by players during summer conditioning,” McDermott said.

These teams also appeared better conditioned than former Canes teams, but that’s subjective.

Asked why his team has been very good after halftime and whether it’s because of great adjustments, Richt said:

“I don’t know if we make great adjustments. But I know we don’t panic at halftime. We don’t change everything at halftime. [The message is] relax and do what you’re supposed to do. I think the weather cooling down in the second half [of the past two games] has helped.”

BigWindyCane1

Christopher Stock made this point more eloquently than I did during the FSU game:

"Langham could challenge Cager for more opportunities. The two are Miami's tallest targets at receiver at 6-foot-4 and 6-foot-5.

Cager has been receiving more playing time than Langham, but struggled throughout the game catching just one pass for seven yards while being targeted seven times with many of the throws in the vicinity and Cager did not go after the ball including one on an interception into the end zone."

Yea well I don't really beleive it yet either. If we win Saturday, which we would NOT have over the last 10+ years, I'll beleive we are getting there.

His Royal Dudeness

The U will give GT more problems than GT can give The U. Our front 7 is too talented and fast for that offense to work against us if properly motivated. The only question seems to be offense. If Richards is healthy, we have a legitimate game changing WR that will keep a corner and safety occupied every time The U takes a snap. GT failing to do otherwise is a massive risk. The U should be able to get favorable matchups for its plethera of offensive weapons. Herndon has been very productive also. We just need Rosier to protect the ball, and throw well enough to hit open players. Unfortunately The U's line isnt outstanding yet. This isnt a line that dominant streches of the game. We need them, more than anyone else to pick up the slack of Walton going down. All in all, the only way we can lose this game is by beating ourselves. We are better than GT at more areas of the game so our focus is the only thing that can cost us this game.

WWIN

So worth it!

CoCane

The front 7 is talented but Pinkney, McCloud and Quarterman is the problem with the run defense. On almost every big run that Akers and Patrick had, the trio of LB's were out of position. The DL kept getting penetration but their RB would fake up the gut, our LB would bite even though there was no hole. Then, bounce outside and rip off big runs. They did it against BC, Toledo and Duke. They didn't have the talent take advantage. FSU did. If they do the same sh*t against GT it will be a long day...

1mg of Epi

Cocanr that's the truth. How many times did a lb lose contain and give up run? Too often

86Cane

Coke...I would say it was the LBs being out of their lanes. missing assignments and losing contain. But they were NOT alone, the safeties did the same things over and over again.

86Cane

Against GT you have to execute, know your assignment and have "Gap Discipline".

(Tees it up...)

His Royal Dudeness

Our staff knows how to prepare for the triple option. Even if we make a couple of mistakes, it wont matter if our DL is constantly in their backfield. Nothing disrupts the wishbone like a DT owning the interior and DEs in the backfield. We got this I think.

1mg of Epi

Go those are some pretty frightening stats right there.

VfB_Cane

Offensively, the key is to get the short passing game going with Homer and Herndon.
We're not going to beat GT at their own game, i.e. controlling time of possesion with the running game. To keep our D fresh we need long, time consuming drives, so getting 5 or 6 yards with short throws will be crucial. Mix that with deep passes and some trickery in the running game and we'll be OK.

raizecane

Tech rushed for 267 yards last year and passed for 94 yards. Stack the box, stay in your gaps, do not deviate from your assignment and we should win by 24.

Let's be honest... The narrative is fair, and it's fair because of our last 14 years as a team, specifically the last 6-8. We've been "back" so many times only to fall short and lose to teams we shouldn't.

Just keep winning and the narrative will die.

In the big scheme of things , yes I agree it is "fair" but somehow "fair" applies to Miami more than others who do not get the same "fair" treatment.

Seems funny (as in peculiar, not as in ha-ha) how the word "fair" has not applied to Notre Dame, UCLA, USC, Oregon, TAMU, Texas and at least half of the teams in the SEC, etc.

1mp, the key potential difference is our depth. When we were back in 2009, ranked in the Top 10 with a 5-1 record we also had the thinnest roster that we would have at any point until 2015. Injuries led us to lose that game to Clemson in 2009.

A weaker, depth challenged Miami squad was also "back" in 2013 at 7-0. FSU beat up our starters and knocked Duke out for the year. We went into a tailspin.

Likewise we entered FSU last year 4-0, got multiple injuries, but did not have the depth to immediately overcome in the next two games

Coaching, improved overall talent, and better depth are the differences in 2017.
