STARS MATTER

SOUP,

I think we've all known that we didnt have the recruits to play with the big dogs, the question was how do we get to that level again? See our biggest problem was not beating the teams we indeed had more stars than, which held us back from stacking the stars we needed to play with the big dogs. In the Coastal, no one can recruit with us, we need to dominate it and build up. 3 more years of this and we will be in real playoff contention.

His Royal Dudeness

Outstanding perspective though in this blog article.

His Royal Dudeness

Wow, Alabama has 79/85 five or four star recruits, 22 five star. Thats insane.

Terrance Sullivan

Just keep in mind we had 71 scholarship players by the Mid November. the other schools have 85 thats a big difference now we only lose like 10 scholarship seniors. that gets us to 61 scholarship players. I guess we lose 3 guys leaving early so thats now 58. So we can now sign anywhere from 24-27 guysin this 2018 class. My guess is 17 sign early this week. and come February 7th on we will sign anywhere between 7-10 guys to finish off this class. now if we lose a couple extra guys to dismissals or transfers we could sign a couple guys to make up the difference.

4-Star defensive tackle Tayland Humphrey chooses FIU over Alabama

If you ever doubted Butch Davis’ ability to recruit shame on you. Earlier this week the FIU Panthers picked up perhaps the highest-rated commit in school history, as one of the best Junior College defensive tackles in the country has decided to take his talents to Miami.

I don't know what y'all where watching. The difference between us and Clemson was QB, OL, big game experience and depth. If we add the right pieces to storm '18, we'll be on par with anybody talent wise next year.

Don't believe me?

I bet we'll be in the top 5 schools with players in NFL camps next season.

If you rank those players the offense, aside from Herendon, pretty much brings up the rear. Also, imo the difference between us and the final four teams is we couldn’t afford to lose anyone to injury without a drop off in talent and/or experience.

Those programs have been at full capacity for this entire decade, reloading depth, developing players, weeding out busts and playing in big games. We’re still operating a dozen players below the scholly limit.

Those teams can lose a Walton, Richards and Herndon for part or all of the season. We can’t yet.

Those who firmly believe in the argument that "It isn't the Xs and Os but the Jimmys and the Joes" that matter most will take refuge in this fact.

However the full answer to the question is much more complicated and complex than that.

Just looked at the list of the top 50 recruiting classes for the last five years. Oklahoma is 13th, Miami is 15th on the rivals list, but 17th on the SB Nation list. FSU is third, and UF is 10th. USF and UCF are conspicuously absent. The list suggests success, but doesn't guarantee it.

Attrition is the biggest difference between Clemson and us. It was also a big difference between Clemson & UGA. I remember reading an article comparing Clemson & UGA's class from a certain year...while Clemson had very little attrition, UGA lost something like half their class that year. And IIRC, that Clemson class was the core of the teams that went to 2 straight NCs.

Bama has also had huge a huge numbers of guys leave. I think 2-3 years ago they had more 4-5 Star guys bail than we had on our roster. They are just so deep the guy who stays is just as good as the kid who left, just more patient.

Read Clemson only has six seniors starting on this team. Will be interesting to see how transfers look for them going forward.

Go Canes!!!

Just found it.

Bama had 27 guys transfer over a 6 year period. The incredible part is the 2014 class had none.

So 26 guys over the other 5 classes, including about a half dozen 5 Star guys, and they didn’t miss a beat.

That’s a loaded roster.

Hetbieibis

Been saying this since I came on this blog about stars mattering but of course their were several who says the opposite is true. Yes coaching does matter but as Bama is proof that to stay on top u go and get the 4 and 5 star players. They have close to 3 deep 5 star players. Player evaluation is also crucial. Now Miami has never been a 5 star haven but until we started being cheap and got less than qualified guys to be the head coach did we start to slide doew the slope of irrelevance. Richt has us trending back in the right direction. Another problem in the past is ignoring certain positions. In the early 2000's it was qb's and wr's and then it was lb's and dt's. The one area that I bitched about was the DT position which to The Herb this is the area we can least afford to ignore and as u can see we finally have 2 good ones and it's no small coincedance that are defense is much better.
I will say this Richt should have brought in a couple more cb's last year. It's lucky we made it through the year with only 5. We are not ready for Norton and McIntosh to leave early. Bringing in one DT a year ain't getting it either.
Good assistants are a must. I'm not sold on Duggins as our route running leaves a little to be desired. If we can get between 15 to 18 four star players s cycle per 25 and maybe 1 or 2 five stars, in 2 years we should be loaded. Lastly we need a QB who can throw the football but can move in the pocket and add depth of talent at LB.

Go Canes!!

Don't think anyone on here said stars don't matter. Think a lot of people said they'd take a hard core 3 Star kid from the 305 over a 4 Star from most parts of the country.

Also think Dugans has been awesome since he got here. Losing him would be a major blow for us. Made a player out of underachieveing Langham and helped turn Berrios into a major weapon and Richards into an All American.

UM buzz...
Courtesy of Barry Jackson @ the Herald:

A six-pack of UM football nuggets as the Hurricanes returned to practice on Tuesday to prepare for the Orange Bowl against Wisconsin:

• We’re told the UM staff remains very high on freshman quarterback N’Kosi Perry, and offensive coordinator Thomas Brown said Perry has been receiving substantial second-team snaps, along with backup Evan Sherriffs.

“He’s done a great job,” Brown said. “He’s taken more second-team reps, kind of splitting those with Evan Sherriffs. He has made a step in the right direction and we’ll see what happens in the future.”

Where specifically has Perry improved since August?

“Just reps,” Brown said. “Being able to understand the offense better and know where to throw the ball and make the throws. He can do that anywhere on the field. Just being more comfortable with the offense.”

Brown said Perry will benefit from bowl practice snaps.

“Nothing like going against a Manny Diaz defense every day in practice,” Brown said. “Those reps will be good for him.”

Mark Richt has said all jobs are open in the spring, and Perry is expected to challenge Malik Rosier for the starting job, with Sherriffs and perhaps incoming Jarren Williams also being given a chance to compete. Cade Weldon remains on scholarship, too.

• Junior defensive tackle Kendrick Norton declined to say if he’s likely NFL-bound, and Mark Richt said no junior (beyond Mark Walton) has informed him he’s turning pro.

From what we’re hearing, I would be surprised if Norton and junior defensive tackle Richard McIntosh Jr. return for their senior season. Both know they have NFL futures. But I have no independent knowledge of a final decision by either.

Norton and McIntosh are roommates and close friends.

One person in contact with junior cornerback Michael Jackson said he also has been mulling whether to turn pro.

Junior safety Jaquan Johnson is expected to return for his senior season, according to a UM source.

• Brown said tight end Michael Irvin Jr. played well against Clemson.

“Replacing Chris Herndon is tough for everybody; he made our offense go run game wise, protection wise, route running,” Brown said. “Big shoes to fill. He did a really good job for the most part overall. We tried to limit his reps. He fought his butt off and played hard.”

• Richt said he has received no indication that he will lose any coach to another school. There has been speculation on social media that receivers coach Ron Dugans might join new FSU coach Willie Taggert with the Seminoles. But Dugans was at UM practice on Tuesday.

• Brown, asked to assess the seasons of freshman receivers Jeff Thomas and Mike Harley: “You never know until they get here. Those guys have progressed well. Phenomenal talents and will continue to get better for us.”

By the way, Darrell Langham - who helped save UM in the FSU game - said he has been getting fewer than a dozen snaps per game and he hopes to play more.

Langham said he has spoken to Ahmmon Richards in the wake of Richards’ knee injury before the Clemson game and Richards expects to be ready to go for the start of next season.

• More than a dozen of UM’s 20 oral commitments are expected to sign in the new three-day early signing period that starts Wednesday. Most of the UM commits were on campus last weekend.

Brown likes the new signing period.

“From Miami’s sake, I think we’re in good shape,” he said. “I like it. What I know is if you don’t have players, I can be the best coach in the world. I can stay in the office all day every day. But it doesn’t matter. We had a bunch of players on campus that will make us better in a hurry the minute they step foot on campus. I’m good with it.”

Guy had zero catches for his career going into his Jr year, looked to have work ethic issues and seemed ripe to transfer.

What I've read is Dugans got him to work hard and it paid off for him and the team.

11 for 207 and 2 TDs. Not too bad for a guy that had done nothing going into this season.

Until someone gets hurt.

Then not so much.

Imo we still have a lot of work to do before we can say we are as good as they are.

CoCane

I'll say it again. The biggest difference between us and Clemson was QB play.

After that, I would say big game experience.
Then overall depth and OL play.

That can all be redeemed this off season. IF Perry or Williams take over.

I think St. Louis, Gauthier, Donaldson and Gaynor will be ready. Whoever emerges from the competiton of Herbert, Brown and Hillary will be solid.

Irvin JR and Jordan will be a nice tandem to replace Herndon.

Richards, Thomas, Cager, Harris, Langham, Harley, Pope and Washington. WR is loaded!

Homer, Dallas, Lingard and George at FB.

LET'S RIDE!

CoCane

My biggest concern is only 4 seniors on offense. Still very young...

Go Canes!!

Clemson is 40-3 over the last three years and is only starting six seniors on offense and defense combined.

Imo we need a full, experienced roster thats got a mix of can't miss studs and guys like Micheal Jackson and McIntosh, lesser known players we develop.

We still have zero room for error at too many positions. Got to get deeper and more experienced across the board.

Hetbieibis

The biggest difference besides QB play is Clemson has learned how to win the big games.

The 2010 and 2012 classes had heavy amounts of churn. If you think about it, going into the 2013 season we had recruited 99 total players between 2010 and 2013. By the time that season started, THIRTY THREE of them were gone, leaving the Canes with 65 players on roster (not including transfers in and walk ons).

Let's break this down a little further, and look at what the Canes lost out on paper from the 2013 - 2016 classes:

Quarterback:
4 Stars: Jack Allison, Kevin Olsen

Wide Receiver:
4 Stars: Sam Bruce*, Dionte Mullins, Derrick Griffin*
3 Stars: Tyre Brady

Tight End:
4 Stars: Jerome Washington, Beau Sandland
3 Stars: Rhyeem Lockley*

Defensive Line
3 Stars: Calvin Heurtelou, Michael Wyche

Linebacker
3 Stars: Marques Gayot, Juwon Young, Devante Bond*

Defensive Back:
4 Stars: Kiy Hester*
2 Stars: Jeff James

If we isolate to just players who did not play at all, there is a bit that was left on the table over the last nine years:

2008:
4 Star: -
3 Star: -
2 Star: CJ Odom (DB)

2009:

The thing about the bagman... coaches tell the bagman who to go after. Coaches make evaluation and give bag man subtle hints or just tell them they really want a kid. Here is how the early signing day effect things. It gives school to who reply on "closing late" aka most SEC schools/bag game less time to make evaluations after the senior year to make sure a recruit is bag worthy. Schools who actually evaluate talent early will benefit from this rule the most not just Miami.

It benefit us because our classes even under Al Golden usually looked like this by December but the difference is we can actually sign them in December.

Another thing how the early signing day helps is some kids use school to negotiate money if the kid is wised up to the game. If a school thinks your not really commit they will have a back-up plan. No more wasting a spot for a kid who is just using your school as leverage and getting burned on Feb. NSD.

Don't be surprised if SEC schools start pushing for this rule to be gone.

NativeCane

No wonder Saban had a cow over ESD.

Hetbieibis

No more having rerecruit players until Feb. Get them signed and now u can narrow down what position is left that u need help, also those want to play the waiting game it gives us time to have a back up plan. Saban hates it because he usually is still playing until the second week of Jan. What worries me is Silvera who is waiting and at the present time once again the DT position is left hanging in the balance.
