Good article SOUP. We are building, but as I said on the last blog...

The man that implements one of the nation's better spread attacks at Miami will win at least 2 national championships. I seriously hope our number 1 recruit is an OC like Mark Helfrich. Oregon's offense, with Miami defense and elite talent would blow teams off the field like a Hurricane. Not to mention exciting offense sells!

Terrance Sullivan

Outstanding article Soup. Total agreement next game is the Orange Bowl we have already accepted the invitation.

This isn't coaching. This is a lack of depth in some spots and talent in others.

This is all the above.

The talent gap ain't as big as you think, stars be damned.

I got homered into ignoring the most important factor going into the game: Clemson's championship pedigree.

You saw the defending national champion completely prepared and a green horned upstart completely unprepared for the stakes at hand.

We are better than that but our coordinators need to be better going forward. We should have lost, but not like that.

Oh well, we will get better hopefully, but we know what problems we will have moving forward. Hopefully we get enough talent to cover our coaching deficiencies and win it all.

Herbieib

Have to have qb who can throw, period! That was pathetic. Watched Memphis and UCF put up almost 120 pts. We make passing look like a lost art. We can't get anyone open and yet The Cuse qb torched Clemson. Got to get rid of the antiquated offense Richt runs. Depth of talent has to get better across the board. We have pieces to be good but consistancy haunts us. The defense didn't bring it the last three games or should I say Manny has been found out.

If the OLine is retained then I'm done CorchMR a nd Manny can kicks rock too

Agreed! Talk about how bad the OC is (richt) but the D really sucked the last 3 games. Remember it was the D that gave up 21 points on 3 consecutive drives to start the game last night. Changes NEED to be made or were destined to be 10-2 or so with richt - similar to his 15 yr history at GA

The talent gap is magnified when the area most lacking is QB.

As far as coaching goes.. the D was handled in zone. Why be in it? Richt did use motion and different formations. There were some big chunk plays there. Rosier couldn't hit em. When he went to the wildcat, Dallas ran a couple times followed by a toss to rosier... that was beautiful and shoulda been a score.

Go Canes!!

We staggered to the finish line and got beat a deeper, more experienced, more talented team that’s very well coached.

As I said last night, we’ve got a lot of work still left to do. It starts with this loaded class which as a bonus also has quality FSU commits looking for a homel

HillViewCane

I just want to say I am sorry guys. There were two games I didn't watch from the comfort of my sofa. The Pitt game and the game last night. It's obviously my fault. I am sorry...

HillViewCane

At least Manny got his guys to play with some heart and get a few stops. They just got nothing from the O tonight. Sidenote we can beat Bama if we play them. They play to our strengths.

Tonycane

Yes, it was fun to think three weeks ago that we were already all the way back. We’re not, not yet. Talent wise (especially with Walton, Herndon, and Richards out) we are no better than the last time we played Clemson. Our strength does not begin to go up until next season.

Time ran out on Rosier. I suspect we will find out that his shoulder is a bit more damaged than we thought. Also, we need to keep this in mind about him. While his performance was great this year, he was never intended to be the starter. Malik played last night because Kevin Olsen and Jack Allison were not here. Had either been what was projected, Malik would have had the headset. And had Kayaa not gone pro early, while we may not have gotten to this game he certainly would have played better than Rosier the last two weeks. Basically what we are seeing is the cost of severe QB recruiting failures by Golden.

Not to gloss over what happened last night but playing 11 straight weeks without a bye had them running on fumes

Just like that 58-0 loss, there might be something that is cleansing or cathartic with this 38-3 loss. First, it magnified the Canes weaknesses and made it clear that certain things must change. Canes need to reassess their starters and coaching.

On defense - Jackson, Johnson, Norton and McIntosh will consider staying another year to improve their NFL stock. Incoming DBs will also play and contribute. The Canes desperately need to build more DB depth. I like how Derrick Smith and Amari Carter are developing, and I love the current recruiting class a lot, and Tyson Campbell would be a great addition to this class.

LBs need more quality depth. The young players are progressing, but McCloud needs to improve as a junior or his reps need to be reduced. Picking up Joyner from homestead would be great.

On Offense - Richards will take care of his body and stay healthy next season. Irvin II needs to work on his strength as a blocker. Jeff Thomas needs to show us he can hold onto the ball, and Cager needs to step up all the way around.

Perry or Weldon need to step up and take the starting QB position.

The Canes need more incoming talent at different positions. I like Homer and Dallas, but the loss of Mark Walton this season was huge. Walton was a game-changing RB when healthy. Fortunately, we have two incoming recruits who are two of the best RBs in the country. Both RB recruits, Lingard and Davis, will play next season if they can pick up the playbook. I have seen them play in high school, and both are more talented RBs than Homer and Dallas. Pope is a real playmaker. There is no one on our current roster quite like him in terms of what he brings. Pope is the full package. Hightower and WIGGINS also have a chance to play and contribute next season.

roachcane77

I agree with 99% of what's been stated about the game, EXCEPT that our player's weren't trying.

I did NOT see evidence of lack of effort. (Like I saw under AG teams.)

Also, it was definitely NOT a good night to be named Malik or Malek. (And wear #12 on either side of the ball.) Ouch... BOTH M's struggled mightily last night.

By the way, the under thrown bomb to Thomas at 9:32 of the first quarter when we were only trailing 7-0 was DEFINITELY pass interference... (NOT called, of course). A "proper" call there, and who knows? We tie it up early and the whole energy of the game might have changed. NOTHING seemed to go our way last night momentum-wise.

Bandy going out early hurt a bunch too...

IMHO, FIRST AND FOREMOST, we need a new OC and Offensive philosophy, period. (Even with better recruits, our offense is too predictable and easy to shut down... Especially, if the QB is having an "off" day, and the OLine is struggling.) Running some spread formations out of different alignments can "hide" those issues.

We got this Canes fans! The U is on the rise!

roachcane77

Also, probably our BIGGEST set back for the ENTIRE SEASON was losing Mark Walton. GAME CHANGER!

He was headed for a Heisman type season... Good luck in the NFL Mark.

Just saw that we are projected to play Alabama in the Orange Bowl, thoughts...

Ive had a few people up here in TN tell me this is what to expect from CMR. And these people love him, they just think this is what you get. One guy said, "he will always get you 8, and some seasons he will whip some teams, but he will also always lose a game or two he shouldn't"

While I can see the truth in that, my hope is with south Florida talent and a typically weak coastal it will be different for him here

mi@mic@ne

FSU was very close to beating Clemson. I believe that this championship game should include a bye week. The Canes played 11 straight games. We were not the same team last night as the one who beat FSU.

Also it is not fair to have the championship game in the town or area where one of the teams has a home field advantage. If we played the championship game in Hard Rock it might have been much closer. The SEC championship was played in the Georgia Dome and it amounted to Georgia having the home field advantage. These SEC and ACC should give the teams who are in the divisions the same representation in discussion in the rules committee and bring in referees who represent the teams that are playing. There should be a committee that studies the calls made on the field and holds the referees accountable. EQUAL REPRESENTATION NOT OLD BOY NETWORK

His Royal Dudeness

I am proud of this team. They took the 1st step on a long road back to championships. Time will tell if Richt is up to the task but at least we know the pantry will be loaded for the next guy if need be. In the meantime I'm rolling with my team and am hoping we implement the spread offense.

At times it was. He added scrambling ability that Brad Kayaa could never achieve, and that put the VA Tech and Notre Dame defenses off guard.

The last few weeks have exposed the following problems

QB: Held together with tape and cardboard. Kayaa going pro early and misses with Kevin Olsen (had he not had his various off the field issues, he could have been the starter this year) and Jack Allison left Rozier the front runner by default.
We really needed Perry to be ready to compete next season.

TE: With Herndon down, we're left with the little used Michael Irvin II.

HB: Losing Yearby and Edwards killed our running back depth, and that was the fear that prevalent on this blog in the offseason. Again, after Travis Hommer all that was left was a converted wide receiver. Shades of 2013.

The good news is that help will be coming. We add three running backs in 2018 (5 star Lorenzo Lingard, 4 star Camron Davis, and 3 star FB Realus George). At tight end we add two 4 star tight ends (Brevin Jordan and Will Malory). Depth will be restored, and these areas fortified in 2018 and beyond.

But the key to next season will be Perry's development.

SEC money at work again. The committee just set the table for a possible all SEC final (Bama vs Georgia)

His Royal Dudeness

We can beat Wisconsin but the OL has to give us something we can hang our hat on. Also Rosier MUST hit the shots that are there. Build some kind of lead for our defense. Let them know early that they arent going alone and they will shut Wisconsin down.

Bama or Ohio State was left to chance. I have no pity for a team that lost by 31 points to Iowa.

His Royal Dudeness

I think our O against Wisconsin needs to be 75% read option. Its all we got with all of our players out. Malik is dangerous enough on the move.

His Royal Dudeness

Also crisp bubble screen plays are going to be key, Rosier needs to hit those throws clean & Cager needs to just grab a few, Cager needs a dominant game.

86 and Roach - this seems to be a yin to yang situation- a good QB can hide those issues. We need better QB and O-line play. YES, I agree, we have to roll with our team and hope that new, more and better talent wins games. Without our top three offensive players in Walton, Herndon and Richards we simply did not have the play makers to win games.

However, if Richt does not change the offense you will be saying the same thing you said about Golden and D'No for the last few years.

86Cane

CGNC...in most cases it is not either or, or one or the other, but ALL the above.

1. We need more talent and depth on offense.

2. We need a MUCH better QB.

3. We need better OL play.

4. We need a new offensive scheme.

Any ONE of those will make us better.

ALL of those will make us National Champions!

When do OrangeBowl tickets go on sale?

TruCane81

I agree 100%.

No matter what the tricky tacticians say or the people who want to simply execute say football maybe more than ANY other sport is a game of MOMENTUM. After a turnover the inability to score has such a negative momentum impact that it cannot be measured.

Because the offense cannot score ti build on the momentum caused by the defensive turnover, eventually the defense loses it's desire and tires after being worn down byt eh other team's offense being on the filed all day long.

Look at the TOP in the first half. Go, look it up.

Posted by: 86Cane | December 03, 2017 at 01:24 PM

Right On Soup.

That is what how you call me your it strategically is so important. We underestimate the role of emotion and confidence in overall performance.

Outside of the true studs that are just naturally head and shoulders above our peers, there is not much that separates the players. Getting guys comfortable and confident letting them did what they do best goes a LONG WAY to determining a players development.

Small lapses create big disappointments.

As critical as I am of our coordinators, I must acknowledge that they are improving the team and I don't see a lot of losses like the last two weeks in our future.

CMR can get receivers open downfield if nothing's my else so if Perry is ahead of his time, we will be where we want to be.

I would assume we are going to get a different offense based simply on the current and incoming dual-threat QB's.
I had Miami going 10-2 and winning the Coastal. I got greedy and wanted more, but in hindsight Richt is a "Mark-ed" (pun intended) improvement over the last staff and the trajectory is still moving upward.
And I'm grateful we are playing Wisconsin (I think) in the OB. I would put their offense on par with ND in that it relies on power that we can counter with speed. By no means am I "eating the W" yet, but I'm pretty sure we can all agree that Bama or Auburn would've wiped the floor with us on par with what we witnessed last night.

Don't sleep on Malik yet though.

First year starter. Hurricane delays. No bye weeks. Got hurt. dad had a stroke. Lost his best weapons. Found out the perils of being a power 5 starter.

He may get a serious fire lit under him and make a big jump in the off season.

If not, Perry and Weldon will be in the mix.

Posted by: TonyCane | December 03, 2017 at 12:40 PM

Olsen was never gonna play at UM, He wasn't even a starter at UNCC.

But if Ryan Williams didn't get hurt prior to the 14' season, Kaaya would've red-shirted, and come back this year.

CaneRock

Richt needs to step up His QB recruiting.

Perry was mostly Coley's guy.

He needed a UVA transfer to salvage the QB position His last year at UGA.

He would've been leaning a true frosh in Eason had He remained at UGA.

Sitkowski wasn't worthy of an offer.

And so far He doesn't have one top rated recruit for 18'.

86Cane

Sorry but Malik would have to make some VERY major and serious improvements to even be considered next year and i do not see that happening. It is not just his poor throwing and mechanics (that the QB coach never fixed) that made him inaccurate it is his decision making. From watching his performance I would say that he does not read defenses well and his decision making is too slow (that the QB/OC never fixed).

Sarasota 'cane

Obviously we haven't seen Perry in a game yet, but I find it hard to believe that Rossier will be able to compete for the QB job next season. His mobility won some big games for us this year and for that I'm grateful, but Perry should give us that and a more accurate passing game.
If it's not Perry then be afraid, be very afraid.

On a side note this is what depth begins to look like as we move into 2019-2020.

https://www.courier-journal.com/story/sports/college/kentucky/2017/11/12/kentucky-football-jarren-williams-uk-wildcats-recruiting/856365001/

Across the board UM will have top rated recruits to help the team build depth at almost every position. That ,more than anything, prevented UM from competing against Clemson last night.

All true, but his deep ball accuracy has got to get soooo much better, that roll out throw to Jeff Thomas was wide TF open! I would think that if we hired Helfrich, Rosier might see more success, if nothing else because he'd run the ball a whole heck of a lot more.

Sarasota 'cane

I don't want Eason. It's time to move on to a pure dual-threat QB. We need to spread the field and play fast like the "Big Boys" in the Atlantic Division. I want to develop one of the kids coming in and not disrupt the Chi that's building on this team. No knee-jerk reactions. Learn from the mistakes and grow as a team. That's the formula.

That formation creates WRs 1 on 1 with safeties, its so damned easy for the QB to see quickly and throw with confidence. Then if the defense takes out LBs, you can run easily. The safties cant really load up into the box either because you'll hit 'em with play action. Clemson was very successful with that against a good Miami defense.

Canerock, the butterflies go back further.

If Robert Marve had not transferred (or had Randy Shannon recruited a QB in 2009) we would have redshirted Stephen Morris in 2010. He would have thus been starting in 2014, and Kayaa would still be here today.

It makes me nervous that we're not recruitany a QB this year. What happens if we fail to do so in 2019 as well? Keep it up and CM Richt becomes Larry Coker.

One thing that sticks in my memory. I recall a night back in 2013. I was at a friends house watching a UFC PPV. Before the fight, Clemson was facing FSU at home. Clemson was coming off of an 11-2 season, and were facing the Seminoles at home. This time they felt that they had finally gotten to the point where they were ready to dethrone FSU. Clemson was facing FSU at home, and they were psyched up. They made a very dramatic entrance to their stadium.

And then FSU beat them at home, 14-51.

Did this mean that Dabo was doomed to failure...forever? No. The next year they went to FSU and lost by three. And beginning in 2015, they never lost to FSU again.

Obviously FSU regressed, but Clemson also got better. Talent levels are not constant.

In terms of talent, Miami will be on the ascent starting next season. That talent gap that we saw last night - as well as the depth gap - will be gone. As hopeful as we were two weeks ago, and as frustrating as last night was, we need a bit more patience.

Miamis been on the ascent for a year.

U mention Clemson ran into their stadium all hyped up. That was Miami yesterday. Clemson was not. They were all business. Miami needs more big game experience... better to be business like than working off a 10 minute adrenaline high. That point was made last night by someone on air I believe.

Richt is a Cane through and through..he is brash and will not accept the player who slacks in offseason preparation. He never fit in with the Bulldogs..butted heads with the President who was micro managing the team. Georgia would never have allowed the turn over chain. When we were healthy we made a great run even tho we had talent holes on both sides of the ball. Richt did a great job coaching up Rosier....when we lost our playmakers to injury Rosiers weaknesses were exposed. With a proven qb who is accurate and the top ten recruiting Richt will fit right in with the South Fla player

Richt came to Georgia as rookie head coach and never got out of that relationship with the President. He came to Miami as an experience coach who was respected. These are his assistants and he is in full control of the program..big difference

I posted Dabo's record to put things in perspective because I recall when Clemson wanted Dabo gone. I remember when West Virginia put up 50+ against them in a bowl game, and even Randy Shannon beat them pretty soundly at Clemson when he was coaching the Canes. But Dabo was smart enough to figure things out and make adjustments. So will CMR.

CMR was the overwhelming choice for ACC coach of the year, voted by coaches and writers. That speaks volumes.

The Canes had a first team all ACC kicker that didn't play well last night, and no canes player can no longer complain that they were left off of the First Team All ACC team after last night's performance.

Hopefully, the remaining underclassmen will return next season so the Canes can make another run.

BigWindyCane1

Canes are at #10 in the coaches poll and #11 in the AP. A win over Wisconsin in the Orange Bowl will mean a top ten finish, a top ten recruiting class and momentum going into the offseason.

Not happy with the performance over the last three weeks, but happy overall. I think it has been a very good season.

BigWindyCane1

I meant the Canes are #10 in the CFB rankings

BigWindyCane1

Gore is now in fifth place all time as a rusher. Sure first ballot HOF

His Royal Dudeness

We just need to pack Hard Rock against Wisconsin and the Canes will do the rest. I'm proud of my team. Lets go to 11 wins in our 2nd season, recruit our asses off and take the Coastal more convincingly next year. We need to let Clemson know we arent going away. Next year's ACC CG, we'll be more ready for them and might knock them off. Also, the next 2 games are Wisconsin & LSU. We owe them and we can beat them.

CoCane

Rosier is garbage. The team won in spite of, not because of him. If he can't hit wide open WR as a rs JR, he won't all of a sudden do it as a SR. N'Kosi needs to take over this off season. If he can't, this team won't sh*t other then the coastal.

All of the questions we have about CMR and his staff will be answered next year.

Last night's slaughter was about Rosier's garbageness. Not having Walton, Herndon and Richards. You need your thoroughbreds in the big games. Overall talent and depth still isn't there yet but closer then some think. Most importantly, inexperience. This team had no idea the type of focus and intensity needed for that environment. Now they do. I appreciate *ss whipping like these because they show you exactly where your flaws are. Hopefully this staff will develop the team accordingly.

Now, let's bludgeon Wisconsin and finish in the top 10.

Oh yeah...

Where is Rosier's cheerleader? WILLIE!!!

Don't stop defending him now. Justify this abomination of a QB one last time...

Their defense became scary good when they hired Venables in 2012.

His Royal Dudeness

The only way Rosier is effective is running the ball. Next game he needs like 15+ carries. Maybe then he force a LB down on him so Homer can break one or finally hit a WR 1 on 1 with a safety.

Yeah them boys was ready to play at a level we were not ready for at all.

Looking at what this team is, it reminded me of how Florida lost to Nebraska in 95.

You all know what happened in 96.

That could be us with tighter coordinating. We will lose some guys but there will be another big jump in production from unheralded guys.

We are so close. Just put the pedal to the metal and get the ball out of the qbs hand.

Diaz will learn to let Coach Cool's guys eat and we will be hell to beat.

That was not just 50+. Clemson ate a 70 burger that new gut and I watched it.

Comparing Dabo to Richt is off to me because Dabo had way less big time hc experience at home that time.

Nobody knew who Dabo was.

This was Richt's 17th season in the power 5 as hc.

There was s no comparison to me but I can ride this out a few more seasons.

If he can't get it done, he will still probably leave us in great shape.
