GERALD WILLIS NOTE
by Peter Ariz

Quick update here because I've seen some people ask about Willis' status for next season. After asking around over the past two days, there is a ton of confidence in where he is at right now. Obviously Willis has had an up-and-down Miami career, but people within the program are very encouraged with the steps he took this season on-and-off the field, while he was still able to practice and workout with the team.

The expectation right now within the team is that at least one, if not both starting DTs in Norton and McIntosh, are leaning towards turning pro -- this would make Willis' return of the utmost importance. As we are in the midst of recruiting season, just remember that Coach Kuligowski's most important addition this offseason is arguably Willis.

MLAlumni1970

I'm not sure if I met Native Cane years ago, when I flew down for a game with
Soup, Keoki, CGNC etc.
Age has made my brain a bit foggy. Don't remember the year. But I do remember that I made some good Cane friends.
Maybe one of you can remember what year it was for me????
Speedy recovery NativeCane.

Told you. He's really not better than Hall and he's not athletic enough to play CB over the guys we have committed. If we get Campbell, we are fine. Surtain Jr would be outstanding at safety.

Two names to watch

FOUR-STAR QB WILLIAMS COMMITS TO MIAMI
by Peter Ariz

Mark Richt added a major piece to Miamis Storm 18 recruiting class this afternoon as four-star QB Jarren Williams from Central Gwinnett High School announced his commitment to the Hurricanes.

The former Kentucky commit has been Richts primary focus at quarterback since the Canes and Art Sitkowski parted ways. Williams rose up the rankings after an incredible senior season. Rivals lists him as their #106 player in the County overall. The 6-3, 210-pound signal caller threw for over 3,000 yards, 28 TDs, and 4 INT this season, and over 500 yards and 10 TDs rushing.

Sources told CanesInSight that Williams has been committed to the Canes since his official visit weekend for the Notre Dame game. Miami is expected to go in-home with him tonight as his decision is now public. He is an early enrollee who will be added to the quarterback mix of Malik Rosier, Evan Shirreffs, NKosi Perry, and Cade Weldon.

He can get 50% passing from any QB on this roster. Perry or Williams will be more dynamic runners so I see about a 1% chance of Rosier being the starter next year.

Awesome news. Barry's article makes it seems like some planning on leaving early, especially Jackson, would be making a big mistake.

Hope someone cam make them listen.

Old Skool

Native. What's the latest? Are you going home today?

BigWindyCane1

Great news on the recruiting front. CMR's first two recruiting classes were lacked quantity, but had pretty good quality. But the 2018 and 2019 classes are shaping up to be the best recruiting classes in over the last two decades.

BigWindyCane1

Good news about Jaquan Johnson coming back. JJ not only brings the ability to make plays like no safety we have had in years, but he is a leader of that defense and he is also a teacher. Young players like Amari Carter should study JJ and learn how to make plays.

I posted earlier that Norton and McIntosh were 50/50, and it appears that Barry Jackson's article is in agreement. Again, I think it is the NFL Advisory Committee that will determine if they go pro. Their performance the last two games didn't go well. I think had the Canes won and made the CFB Playoff, both DTs would have been more likely to turn pro. Being roommates, I just have a feeling that they both will make the same decision. I hope that decision is to stay.

As for Michael Jackson, I disagree with the Barry J. article in that I think he will get drafted and play in the NFL, but I just don't think he will get drafted high. Another productive season in college will improve his draft stock.

If both DTs return next season, the Canes defense should be THE TOP defense in college football next season barring significant injury.

BigWindyCane1

This line from the Barry J. article sums up my feelings about this team going into next season (although he might simply be the master of stating the obvious):

• That AFC executive said the two areas where UM particularly needs to improve to be on Clemson’s level are quarterback and offensive line.

He said the line simply isn’t physically talented enough and UM must hope either Malik Rosier improves substantially or N’Kosi Perry wins the job next spring. “Rosier is just a guy; he needs to work on a lot of things,” the executive said.

Ohio_Cane

Mike Jackson trying to strike while the iron is hot.

He had a great year, and sees the ridiculous talent we're bringing in at DB. If his reps go down next year because of them, his value in the NFLU goes down, too.

JaxCane

Those comments from the NFL executives really put some perspective on where our guys are from a talent standpoint. Sounds like most of those guys are not viewed to be as good as some of us think. Not one consensus first or second round talent?? Interesting, maybe the Clemson beat down was what it should have been.

Go Canes!!

Posted by: JaxCane | December 07, 2017 at 11:00 AM

We can’t lose our three best skill position players, have “A guy” at QB and compete with Clemson. Plain and simple.

Here’s more perspective:

Clemson is 10-0 vs the current FPI top 40. UCF is only other team w/multiple games vs FPI40 without a loss. They’re 2-0. No other team has more than 6 wins. Clemson’s avg margin of victory is 19 points in those games, best in FBS. #ButSyracuse

While that might be his thinking....if he is worried about incoming freshman, how is he supposed to compete with grown men?

RCCF

At this rate Michael Jackson is starring at Damn if You Do Damn if You Don't:

He Stays- Competition is thick and he may lose his spot to a youngn
He Goes- NFL says well he had a great year but he ran from competition on a lower level, what makes us think he will step up to competition on a higher level?

sorry if a kid is worried about really losing his spot on a college team to a kid fresh out of HS no matter how talented that kid is, it says a lot about how well the college kid performs and how he feels about his performance personally. He Ain't Ready!

CaneRock

These kids thinking about leaving early, is exactly why they need a combine like the NBA does it without losing eligibility.

Terrance Sullivan

Keep bringing the Funk Go Canes!

CaneRock

Can't knock Jackson for leaving early, kid had a good year. IIRC, I don't remember too many teams going to His side of the field that often...Young & Delaney seemed to be the most picked on DBs.

BigWindyCane1

Michael Jackson is 6'2", 195 lbs. If he runs a sub-4.5 40, he will definitely get drafted. No doubt. If you look at the NFL draft over the last 5 years, you will see that any CBs with those measureables always get drafted. Jackson also happened to have six ints, with a few of those showing he has fluid hips and can move. CBs are at a premium in every NFL draft.

BigWindyCane1

Delaney gets picked over Jackson? I seriously doubt it.

I agree 100% with Cane Rock.

BigWindyCane1

Although Jackson may be a candidate to leave early, I still hope Jackson returns.

Exactly BigWindy, MJ definitely has the size. And His action figure hips is the main thing that stood out to me when He was coming outta HS.

Makes The Herb wary when kids have a chance to sign early but choose to wait until Feb. what would u be waiting for, if u are truly committed to us.

As for those with aspirations of turning pro early have only to look at our last 3 games and u have answered any questions u may have. We flopped when it counted most. Consistency is what they all lack. Have to play until the whistle. Been criticizing Thomas for awhile and apparently was right according to a scout. Good player who disappears during games. Should have been a sacking machine. 5 star rating coming out of H.S. but played more like a 3.5 to a sometime 4 star. Will probably be another, in a long line of ex Canes players who were better pros than college players.

These kids are leaving early because they want to get to that second contract asap. With the new rookie cap they're better off going lower up front and collecting the extra year on the back end
