Shannon threw away Stephen Morris’s redshirt when Jacory Harris got injured in the middle of the season, and Shannon was criticized for years, even after Golden took over.

Posted by: BigWindyCane1 | December 21, 2017 at 09:29 AM

Shannon didn't have a choice. Jacory got KO'd vs UVA, & Morris came in after Spencer Whipple & Highsmith (IIRC) stunk up the joint.

Morris actually almost brought us back in that game, threw a rocket across the field to Benjamin for His first Collegiate TD...I was like whoa.

Wofford upset UNC last night, feels great to be undefeated, now let's win this Diamond Head Classic and go into ACC play strong.

Outstanding 86. Love that the Canespace Family will be having a great function with Raize, KY, Native, and Old Skool.

His Royal Dudeness

I dont think its that crazy of an idea to burn Perry's redshirt, but only if you are 100% sure he's ready. None of us know how well he's practicing, if he's out there commanding the offense like Brady while Rosier is stinking it up, so be it. The problem with all the other scenarios you guys named, Kaaya, Morris, whoever, is that they never got another QB to challenge them. If Richt keeps getting a 4 star QB every year, then Perry's RS isnt that big of a deal, however it is a gamble and could be a problem for depth down the road. It all comes down to Perry, if he's clearly dominating, I think you can play him, but its got to be clear cut to everyone because Rosier QBed this team to its best season in years.

BigWindyCane1

CMR's first two recruiting classes were very good in terms of quality, but quantity was low. CMR didn't go for as many reaches and developmental projects. Instead, CMR pursued graduate transfers to fill depth needs. It turned out to be a great strategy. CMR and his staff have also done a great job of developing players and keeping them focused. The Canes have now gone 9-4 his first season, and 10-2, Coastal Division Champs and the Orange Bowl in his very special second season. Third season will be even more special with the returning players and new recruits.

CMR's third class and the inaugural early signing day brought us the best Canes recruiting class in terms of quality and quantity in over a decade, and the Canes still have NSD to look forward to. Even the three stars (kicker, fullback and Rosseau) will contribute. Looking forward to seeing these new Canes getting developed by these coaches and hitting the field.

Go Canes!!

I’m going to give CMR credit for looking well beyond this game.

He knows QBs make or break your program. Injuries, transfers, busts...they’re everywhere.

Great ones not so much...

There’s no way we should or would burn a year of eligibility of what could be a precious commodity down the road.

Love what Native Cane says. Flopping like a mullet on dry land. Laughed so hard reading that.
Seems like all of us are really pleased with the Storm 18 class. We have to do things right and prepare right, and prepare our Cane youngins for the task at hand. Take our time, and do it right, and the NC will be ours in short order.
Dem Canes for sure

Tonycane

CaneRock, I don’t think AJ Highsmith was still a QB during that game in 2010. It literally was Jacory and Spencer. When Spencer went in it was an absolute disaster. He was not a viable quarterback. So it was either run the ball or burn the redshirt for Morris.

But had Shannon kept Morris in the sideline, Brad Kayaa would likely have been our quarterback this season. And Ryan Williams would have been our starter in 2014.

BigWindyCane1

End the year right - Orange Bowl win.

Posted by: CGNC | December 21, 2017 at 01:00 PM

IMHO, an Orange Bowl win, the banner 2017 recruiting classes last February and the early-signing period 2018 recruiting class on Wednesday, would all make 2017 a great year for the Canes!

End the year right - Orange Bowl win.

His Royal Dudeness

Posted by: Go Canes!! | December 21, 2017 at 12:47 PM

If Mark Richt came out tomorrow and said, "N'kosi has really stepped up and is becoming the QB we thought he'd be. I think the key thing is that his teammates have complete confidence in him as he's really become the vocal leader in the locker room. QB is just like any other position on the field, we continually evaluate it and will start the best player for our team's chance at winning. Its because of that I think Perry has a great chance at starting the bowl game against Wisconsin." you'd be 90% on board and so would I. Sure, there's a little 10% in each of us that would be a bit worried, but if N'kosi threw for 322 with 4 TDs and no turnovers, we'd say its ballsy move and would praise Richt and call him a QB whisperer. All I'm saying is, its not insane to think Perry's RS could be burned for a bowl game.

His Royal Dudeness

Posted by: Tonycane | December 21, 2017 at 01:58 PM

Thats not the issue because Brad could have come back anyways. The issue is not having enough depth to play the best players. If you had Morris & Bridgewater & Geno Smith & whoever else, it wouldnt matter. You let the best guy play and then stack talent for the future. THATS the recipe at QB. You bring in quality talent every year, you let the best guy play. If a Sophmore wins over a Senior, you do your best to keep the Junior while you stack 2 Freshmen and then another one the year after.

CaneRock

AT ALL COST

Posted by: SinisterCane | December 21, 2017 at 01:59 PM

At all cost to who?

His Royal Dudeness

Cleveland Reed pending. Sitting at table with his mom? in Miami gear.

Tonycane

Oh I agree completely, Dude. Larry Coker’s biggest failure was an almost complete inability to recruit wide receivers, leaving him having to convert a corner and punter just to field an offense. He came nowhere close to replacing the talent that left for the NFL or simply graduated. But his second biggest failure was recruiting QBs, and it had ripple effects through Al Golden’s regime.

2006: Wright, Freeman
2007: Wright, Freeman, Maeve (injured and could not play)
2008: Marve, Harris, Cook, Smith
2009: Harris, Highsmith
2010: Harris, Whipple (walk-on), Morris
2011: Morris, Williams
2012: Morris, Williams, Crow, Dewey
2013: Morris, Williams, Crow
2014: Kayaa, Williams, Rozier
2015: Kayaa, Rozier, Olsen, Sheriff
2016: Kayaa, Rozier, Sherifs, Allison, Testaverde
2017: Rozier, Sheriff, Weldon, Perry

The complete lack of depth in 2007 led to overrecruiting by Shannon in 2008. That logjam hurt efforts to recruit in 2009. But then Only one person could win out, and three quarterbacks transferred before the season started.

His Royal Dudeness

Reed is in! 19/20.

Boom Boom Baby!

His Royal Dudeness

Our only unsigned commit is **** DT Nesta Silvera. Nesta wants to wait and sign with his teammates, a couple of which (***** CB Tyson Campbell & **** DE Andrew Chatfield) it seems are strong Miami targets. Hopefully we grab a few more commits before NSD so Nesta can know a few more guys are coming with him.

Whatever it takes

His Royal Dudeness

Besides Nesta, we dont have another DT commit and thats troubling. Probably the gem as of now would be **** DT Dennis Briggs out of Kissimmee, FL. If Briggs can add more power to his frame, he can be really good in a year or 2. Another recruit that our staff thinks could be really good is *** DT Daniel Carson out of Missouri. He can play DT or DE and could look a lot like McIntosh in a couple of years. I think if the staff can sign all 3 they will.

His Royal Dudeness

We could come away with this in our front 7

**** DT Nesta Silvera
**** DL Dennis Briggs
*** DL Daniel Carson
**** DE Andrew Chatfield
**** LB Gregory Rousseau
**** LB Patrick Joyner

And this in our 2ndary

***** CB Tyson Campbell
**** CB Gilbert Frierson
**** CB D.J. Ivey
**** DB Al Blades Jr.
**** S Gurvan Hall

and could add 1 of...

***** DB Patrick Surtain Jr.
**** CB Asante Samuel Jr.

Fantastic news. That position is the missing link for us.

His Royal Dudeness

The Wisconsin. game is really going to come down to good Malik or bad Malik. We also need a WR to step up and be the man for at least 1 night, and I'm looking squarely at Lawrence Cager. If he can grab the 7 or 8 he's capable of and move chains, Miami can stay on pace. Lastly the OL has got to be able to set blocks for the run. So much has to go right again. Here's hoping this staff is up to the challenge that Wisconsin brings. I know the D will be ready and will keep it close enough to win. They wont be bullied by Wisconsin unless the O hangs them out to dry again. Its really important that Miami's O gets rolling early. Let the D know you came to play, get the crowd rocking.

That is very good news! Perry was outstanding in high school, he looked great in camps and looked good in warmups before games. It’s good to know he is developing into the player that the coaches projected him to be. A good QB would have given the Canes another 14 points a game. A few close games could have been blowout wins and a win a Pitt could have put the Canes in the CFPlayoff. Next season can be special, even though the schedule is tougher

Hetbieibis

Speaking of burning red shirts that's what happened to Herndon. Walford got hurt and Herndon played maybe 3 games his freshman year, I believe.

I counted close to 78 or 79 players after the commitments yesterday so I think we have room for 5 or 6, in Feb.

Richt has got to feel fantastic about his coaches and their plan to get everyone locked in. Now they can be in full attack mode while only having to hang on to Nesta who's been 100% committed so far. I feel like we need to close real strong on the DL. Silvera, Briggs, Carson & Chatfield would perfect. If we do that I will be optimistic in landing Tyson Campbell. When your program lands three 4* OL, you can afford to bring in a 3* with a bunch of potential. That should finish the whole thing off completely.

CIS poster:

"I just heard some stuff from a buddy that is close to the kid. Nothing really groundbreaking though, just that he wasn't happy with the way their class fell apart and that he's not sure if FSU is where he really wants to be, thus he's leaning heavily towards Miami.

He couldn't tell me anything about Campbell though. Apparently he keeps everything close to the vest. He said Surtain likely LSU and Chatfield is Miami.

Again, nothing groundbreaking. Most people could probably come to these conclusions on their own with an educated guess. I was hoping for more definitive info but that's hard to get with these kids."

CaneRock

Posted by: CaneRock | December 22, 2017 at 04:20 AM

First paragraph was a response about Samuels.

Another poster who's apparently related to Campbell posted this..."But at the end of the day, I think Ty's wearing Orange & Green. Kid has NEVER been a front-runner and that goes back to Optimist days. Stayed loyal to West Miramar when he could've went to any other higher profiled team. Stayed loyal to AH and trusted the judgement of guys like, I don't know, Rumph, who turned him into a DB in the 1st place. Not to mention, stare right into the face of the wire-to-wire #1 rated CB in America and prove he's the more feared defender. I think he knows where he'd be most appreciated..."

CaneRock

Also, Campbell's Dad is 73 Y/O, seriously doubt He wants to be taking those long @$$ road trips to see His Son play at that age...not when He can drive right up the street and see Him play at HR 6 times a year.

Go Canes!!

Even though there's zero chance of it happening, here's one final reason for never burning Perry' redshirt for only one game.

What if you do and next year he loses the job to Williams and has to transfer. CMR doesnt seem like the kind of man who'd do that to a kid.

He'd be a junior the next time he'd be able to line up under center at another school.

Not predicting it, just a thought.

It's something to consider. Out here in Austin, the University of Texas has had depth problems at quarterback for at least seven years now. They were commenting on the radio yesterday that this feels like "the first time in I don't know how long that we have more than two quarterbacks"

For those of you with teenage kids or young adults, you know that some kids know what they want, while others change their mind every five minutes. Their career path, their favorite college, all change during their high school career. Heck, they even fall in love several times in one year.

Brennan Carroll and Al Golden should get credit for getting that into the modern era.

Terrance Sullivan

TonyCane Yes Sir. They get credit for that and they get credit for starting the Hurricane Walk. First one was against Ohio State in 2011. and pushing for things like a training table and infrastruture improvements but I give Blake James much of the credit. That guy has been a pit bull on facilities improvement since he became AD in October 2012.Now His Game Day coaching was abysmal. He gets credit for the other football related stuff.

Dawsey is obviously not the same coach or recruiter as Dugans, no doubt. They are in totally different categories. Dugans has definitely gotten the job done for the Canes on the recruiting trail, with his first recruiting classes having elite talent (players like Richards, Thomas and Pope), and developing players on the roster like Langham and Berrios.

FSU has money, but Taggert has other options at WR coach, including some coaches that he worked with at WKU, USF and Oregon. It will be interesting to see how this develops.

According to WWIN Mark Richt is 10-14 at Miami lol. We need to fly banners over the Rock to have him fired lol.

BigWindyCane1

Barry Jackson quoted Canes staff regarding Donaldson and Scaife, IMO, the best two OL recruits out of Miami-Dade the last two recruiting cycles:

• UM offensive coordinator Thomas Brown said the staff isn’t considering moving Navaughn Donaldson from guard to tackle next season.

“I would say right now with where he is weight wise he's definitely going to be a guard down the road,” Brown said.

• Delone Scaife, the most ballyhooed of UM’s incoming offensive linemen, can play guard or tackle, according to Canes people.

Terrance Sullivan

Correction Mark Richt is 10-15 at Miami lol since our Canes went 0-13 last year lol. Its a Miracle the Russell Athletic Bowl invited us despite being 0-12 lol. Thats a first and we rewarded them by getting blasted to West Virginia lol to finish 0-13. Thank God we went 10-2 this year hopefully we win the Orange Bowl and maybe Blake James will have mercy on Mark richt and dont fire him even though a 10-15 Coach should be fired. I should have asked Corn Elder and Adrian Colbert how did it feel to go winless 0-13 last year when I saw them for the Virginia Game. I should ask Corn Elder how did he and Jamal Carter and others felt losing at Duke 2 years ago. and going 0-13 that year as well. Or talked to Duke Johnson and Tracey Howard and asked them how it felt to go 0-13 in 2014 lol.

CaneRock
