Lol your numbers are off

31 former five-star prospects eligible to be picked this year, 23 were selected during the draft.

What’s particularly impressive about that group, though, is just how many of those formerly elite recruits were selected in the first 2 rounds.

So 80% of 5 stars are drafted, most in rounds one and 2.

He's a good recruiter, and he's selling hope. All new coaches do. Al Golden's first class was the anomaly (as it had completely evaporated when he took over) when he started with the 36th ranked class in 2011. Many first year head coaches have been able to scramble to put together Top 20 classes in the first few months of their tenure. Lane Kiffin was even able to get the Number 1 class when he began at USC.

Here's a few first year HC recruiting rankings:

Randy Shannon, 2007 (UM): 19th
Nick Saban, 2007 (Alabama): 10th
Lane Kiffin, 2009 (Tenn): 10th
Brian Kelly, 2010 (ND): 10th
Jimbo Fischer, 2010 (FSU): 10th
Urban Meyer, 2012 (Oh St): 4th
Charlie Strong, 2014 (UT): 20th
Lane Kiffin, 2010 (USC): 1st
Jim McElwain, 2015 (UF): 23rd
Mark Richt, 2016 (UM): 23rd
Tom Herman, 2017 (UT): 31st
Willie Taggart, 2017 (OU): 18th
Jimbo Fischer, 2018 (TAM): 16th

Tony how many were there that never got to the league?

Posted by: 1mg of Epi | February 07, 2018 at 11:27 PM

Two of the graduated five stars never got to a training camp. Two became stars in the NFL.

To go back to an earlier post though, these stats aside stars do matter. While 5 star and 4 star players can wash out, their potential is generally higher. There's a reason that Alabama is almost always in the NC tournament, and it's that they have a team of over 60 four and five star players. Ohio State is not far behind them, and FSU was also close to that a couple of years ago. They have greater margin for error - if a Willie Williams does not work out, they simply have a Willie Williams II and Willie Williams III backing him up that they can choose from.

1mg of Epi

Yea. The more stars, the fewer the players, the significantly larger % of them move on to NFL.

raizecane

You want to see a great kid in the way he approaches signing day, watch the announcement held by Nicholas Petit-Frere out of Berkeley Prep in Tampa who committed to Ohio State.....

Go Canes!!

Everyone has big time busts.

Difference between us and Bama or Ohio State is they have 25 5 Star guys on their roster compared to one or two on ours.

Think anyone at OSU has thought twice about the "All world" Heritage QB who busted out? Or the #1 WR in the nation two years ago from St Thomas who got injured and transfered to UF?

Read somewhere Bama has had TWENTY SEVEN 4 or 5 Star guys transfer in the last six years They could care less. Just reload and keep moving forward.

Historically we've seen few here as our program changer or savior.

Thankfully that looks to be changing. We lost 4 and 5 Star guys like DJ Johnson, Sam Bruce and Dionte Mullins the last two seasons and it finally looks like we have better guys here or on the way.

Depth is key. We're getting there.

Go Canes!!

After all, the Pittsburgh team that so easily ended the Hurricanes’ 10-0 run last year had recruiting classes ranked anywhere from 29th nationally to 65th in the past four cycles. Wisconsin, the team that hammered Miami in the Orange Bowl game, has consistently been ranked as a 30-something recruiting class in recent years."

"It’s more than restocking a roster each February with new talent. It’s refining and reevaluating what you’ve already got."

"Richt was shown the door at Georgia because, in large part, his bosses weren’t convinced they were getting enough in that area. According to the Rivals scouting website, the Bulldogs were outside the top 10 just three times in Richt’s 15 years as the Bulldogs head coach and yet it never added up to a spot in the national title game."

You are playing the last t24 hour result card.

What if Lingard, Pope, Jordan, Mallory and the rest had dragged this thing out to signing day and picked the UM hat in their ceremony/

Would we have hit on elite guys then?

About half our class is consensus Top 10 at their position nationally and most of thoses guys are already on campus busting their asses off.

We missed on some but hit absolute home runs at other positions of dire need.

It's an elite class offensively and very good defensively. Only thing missing on the D side is quantity.

Be Happy w/What We Have!

Mephistopheles

While it is difficult, we have to remember where we are. Miami has not been a major force to these kids for their entire cognizable life. 2017 is the first time UM has had headlines for how long?

In in spite of that, Miami performed well better than their national ranking, outpacing all Florida schools, not to mention programs like Oklahoma, ND, and LSU to name a few. How long has it been since that happened?

Focus on that, and not on the kids who went somewhere else. You can't blame those kids-they don't know what the Real U looks like because it hasn't existed in a long time.

This will take time. I think the competition in college ball is at its zenith. Becoming elite is difficult to say the least. Why?

Money-college football makes crazy money these days. This leads to . . .

Coaches who in the past had to go to the NFL for the big paycheck, now can get paid on campus, so the coaching quality is better than ever. That extends to coordinators & assistants.

The proliferation of 7 on 7 programs, and the like have dramatically improved the readiness of HS players to transition to college, so rosters are deeper.

Facilities across the country have never been better, as are strength and conditioning programs. Its an arms race these days.

Its a tall mountain to get to the top of college football at this time in history. UM is undeniably on a vertical track, and this class is indicative of a step in the right direction. We may still be a year or 2 away, but Miami has positioned itself to challenge that mountain.

In any of our past regimes, Pope goes to Bama, Lingard to FSU, Jordan to USC. We closed with an excellent class with lots of toppings. Well said.

Like I said yesterday, at this point continuing to whine about players we “didn’t get” is becoming an insult to the young men who quietly signed and have been bustling their asses with Coach Felder on campus for the last month.

We have multiple elite guys at multiple positions.

That’s all I care about going forward.

TonyCane

Good point...if Golden were still here I could easily see at least five of our elite level recruits going elsewhere. That’s being charitable...presuming this is Year 2 Golden. A Golden regime that never ended...we would not have won the ACC Coastal in 2017 and would have probably had 7 to 8 wind each season in 2016 and 2017....that regime probably snookers only 2 to 4 elite level players and is struggling to match recruiting with Va Tech.

RCCF

The Grad Transfer Tracker:

- Meanwhile, Sterling Johnson, a rotation defensive lineman at Clemson, is also looking to take a graduate transfer. Johnson appeared in eleven games for the Tigers this season, recording 14 tackles and two sacks in 2017. He was a high school All-American, so the talent is there. And Johnson still has time to make an impact - he's got two years of eligiblity remaining.

- Finally, Dylan Thompson, a reserve defensive lineman, is taking a graduate transfer from Ohio State. Thompson's career has been marred by injury and academic issues, and he was able to play his first game for the Buckeyes until 2017. He has one year of eligibility remaining.

His Royal Dudeness

I dont think its impossible that next years team could struggle to find itself early on, but towards the end of the year, and into 2019 I dont think anyone will want to play us. 2018 could look a lot like 2016 & and then 2019 could look like 2000. Just please, if anything, we dont need any banners, or sh*t talking to players or coaches. Keep it classy.

Game of the year IMO. Hopefully we both have great records and its a Manny Diaz vs Bud Foster kind of night up there, with us pulling through.

Also, Richt stated at the end of his Recruiting address the 10th coach is already picked.

Stated that he has great connections and is the reason Coburn was even thinking about flipping.

Is this official? I really hope not.

It is official. Wow what cheap uninspired waste of an opportunity. We just hired the guy who couldn’t pull out coburn.

Nothing says “yea kid, you should be concerned about the coaching you’ll get if u come here” like hiring another rookie coach w no track record.

Dudes bragging about getting a recruit to think about coming here? Oh wow that’s sad.

Soup has THEEE worst personality of anybody within 500 miles of coral gables, yet even he could get a recruit to think about coming here.

Matt Doherty, the Hurricanes’ director of player personnel, told WQAM’s Joe Rose and Zach Krantz on Thursday that Rumph shouldn’t be blamed for UM’s American Heritage misses.

“It’s completely unfair in my opinion,” Doherty said. “You can’t bully a kid going into a school because of a past relationship with an individual. Mike did phenomenal job maintaining job with those kids for two years. It just didn’t work out. We took our best shot. We don’t feel like we left anything undone. We did everything we could possibly do within the rules, within our power to woo those guys. It’s no one individual’s fault.”

Surtain — the American Heritage coach, former Dolphins cornerback and father of Surtain Sr. — told WQAM’s Rose and Krantz that fans bashing Rumph on social media, “need to sit down and shut their mouth. They’re not doing justice to the process and the players they have. Mike has done a great job getting players. He’s got good players in DJ Ivey, Al Blades and some other kids. Miami is going to be fine. Going on an official visit [to UM with his son] last week and spending time with those guys and coach [Mark] Richt, I was really impressed and have an affinity for those guys. They do it the right way.

“Coach Rumph is not going to get everybody. People are acting like these kids are going to the NFL. They are 17-year-old kids and making decisions that are best for themselves. I relayed that message to coach Rumph. He’s doing an excellent job for that secondary he had last year and the year before, look what he did with it. He has some terrific players in his ’18 class.”

It's ok to read an opinion contrary to yours without insulting the other person or telling them to shut up.

Really, it is.
