The University of Miami women's tennis team posted its first 7-0 win of the season Sunday, shutting out No. 25 Syracuse at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.

No. 18 Miami (12-6, 8-3 ACC) recorded its fourth top-25 win of the spring and tallied its fifth clean sheet of the spring in a stellar outing.

"We knew how big this was today. We knew that we just had to be tougher," Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. "[That means] playing great defense, but when the strike presents, stepping up and taking it. We were able to do that today against a team that, on courts one, two and three, was hitting absolute rockets. They were able to stay calm mentally and tough physically, which is where we need to be. We've been talking about [getting a 7-0 win against] a team for a while, so to finally do it is nice."

Hey clan! I know I’m behind on a lot. But can anyone enlighten me on y coach K really left for Alabama. We made him an assistant coach. And he was supposedly getting 1 million annually. Is Bama really paying him more than that?

Per The Score -

After wrapping up his team's initial spring scrimmages, Miami head coach Mark Richt confirmed redshirt senior Malik Rosier maintains a healthy lead in the quarterback competition.

"Malik is ahead of everybody as far as just knowing what to do and how to do it, there is no question," Richt said following the scrimmage, via Austin Pert of TheMiamiHurricane.com. "Even throughout the week, it was very evident that if we try to run our total system, he’s more than well equipped to do it."

The team's starter in 2017, Rosier is battling redshirt freshman - and former four-star recruit - N'Kosi Perry for the starting spot. Both quarterbacks received time with the first- and second-team offenses during spring practices.

Richt has been impressed with Perry's progress after redshirting his first collegiate season.

"N’Kosi is getting much better," Richt told reporters. "He’s getting it and he’s seeing where having (Rosier's) experience to get us in the right play can make all the difference in winning a game."

Rosier finished 8 of 17 for 109 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception, while Perry completed 6 of 13 passes for 33 yards, no touchdowns, and one interception in the team's first scrimmage.

Go Canes!!

I have the flu and feel like I may die st any second.’

But at least it’s better than that scrimmage report.

Lord Jesus help us all.

IMO, I usually don't read too much into those first closed scrimmage stats. The Legends of the Spring will have to carry it over into the Fall. Coaches will go over the film and analyze each play. Some players were playing against the first team, some against the second and third team and others against the scout team. Some were playing 7v7 because the Canes didn't have enough linemen suited up. Some starters probably didn't even play.

For example, I believe Rousseau can be a very good player, but just because his stats were better than Joe Jackson's, doesn't mean he will start and become a star in the Fall. Jackson, Quarterman, Pinkney, Jaquan, and MJ, will all be starters, and probably All ACC, but were largely absent in the scrimmage stat sheets. I wouldn't draw too many conclusions from the stats in a closed scrimmage.

Players will also have an opportunity to review their film and see what they can do better. I think the next open scrimmage and the spring game will also give us a better (but not perfect) picture of what to expect in the Fall.

UMike

One of these QB's has got to step up for us to take the next step. A slightly better QB and we are perhaps a 12-1 team last year. Better qb play and play calling will be key.

TonyCane

I get the vague sense from reading these reports that Williams might ultimately prove to be the best quarterback on the roster.

mark weaver

Rosier might have a better grasp of the offense but that doesn't mean he will be a better passer!

86Cane

Coaches are so wrapped up in their "system" that they can't see the talent through the trees.

Who cares if Malik get's them into the right play only to throw it to the wrong guy, or too late, or into the ground or 10 feet behind them or over their head? If you can't EXECUTE the play then you have lost before you have hiked the damn ball.

I'm just glad we don't have to play UCF.

That is all.

Shield your eyes 86.

Coaches are talking publicly about the prospect of Donaldson playing RT. Hmm...

His Royal Dudeness

I like this staff, theyre all a bunch of likeable dudes that know football. Theyve been together for a while too, I think we're gonna get a pay off. They need to recruit offensive tackles better though.

Posted by: His Royal Dudeness | April 10, 2018 at 02:37 PM

That is PERFECT! That means that they are moving him to RT, Malik will start game 1, get killed by Donaldson's man, and then Perry, Weldon or Williams can play the rest of the season.

I love it! Thank we sweet baby Jesus!!!

I told you specifically to shield your eyes, lol. Now the 86Cane household has to deal with you today, but its not my fault, I gave the disclaimer.

86Cane

I know you think you are being sly but you don't get it. As much as you might seem to like it to, his move out to T will not upset me.

The only reason that the coaches said they MAY move Donaldson out to T is out of sheer necessity. If it is necessary because the RT is getting abused by our DEs in practice, and we have another OL who can play guard better than the current RT can play tackle, and it makes the team better then I would be all for it.

Last year if you watched the games and film then you would know that Donaldson could never have played T. Now, if he loses weight, improves his balance and footwork to move better in space and increases his endurance then I'm fine with that.

I am not concerned about being "right", I am concerned about putting the best team out there to win games. All the other nonsense that you are inferring is just wrong and childish and ignorant. Nice try but weak effort.

Things will play out this summer.

CoCane

The next 2 seasons will reveal if the QB and OL coaches are the goods. By 2019 the OL and QB positions will be fully loaded with talent and experience. If they aren't playing at elite levels by then, changes need to be made.

If there isn't enough improvement this upcoming season, changes should at least be considered.

I'll patiently wait to see the proof in the pudding this fall though...

UMike

Bad news for hoops team.....

CoCane

I will be squaded up at the spring game with fam and friends. Hopefully we'll see some of you there this Saturday.

From 247...

Additional charges were filed in the FBI investigation into corruption and fraud in college basketball Tuesday, with the superseding indictment expanding the case to include “alleged payments to the families of six student athletes” in connection with their decisions to choose one of four schools represented by apparel company Adidas: Louisville, Miami, Kansas and NC State.

I also agree 100%. Donaldson has wanted to play tackle since he arrived, but he wasn’t ready. He lost a lot of weight last year, but needed to lose more. Donaldson has the natural gifts, but his conditioning was not where it should have been . And if Searels is wrong for moving Donaldson to RT, the Soup is also right that Rosier will get drilled and we will see his backups get playing time

TJL

Crow to Donaldson= 6 points

Terrance Sullivan

UMike that's not anything new on Miami or Louisville. The new stuff is on Kansas and NC State. Just a FYI!

UMike

Ok good TSully...247 posted today so I thought it was new

Yeah I can see how anyone could read it that way. Poor job on the journalist on reporting. SMH.

Interesting article about Donaldson from Insidetheu:

"Donaldson (6-6, 350) started ten games as a true freshman at right guard in 2017. Miami coach Mark Richt is now hoping that he can be UM’s answer at right tackle.

“We thought sooner or later he would move out to tackle, but he was doing so good at guard that we didn’t want to move him and we thought we might have some answers out there,” Richt told The Joe Rose on 560 WQAM on Wednesday.

The right tackle position is one of the question marks the offense must answer this offseason. The starting right tackle in 2017, Tyree St. Louis, is now the starting left tackle as he replaces departed senior Kc McDermott. Junior George Brown started the spring at right tackle, but he struggled to play with consistency on Saturday.

“Part of the reason why we had so many sacks is because we couldn’t get off the snap and those young, long, fast ends we getting around us,” Richt said.

Richt believes Donaldson does have the skillset to be a tackle at the college level. He compares him to former UGA standout and current Cincinnati Bengal Cordy Glenn who at 6-feet-6 and 345 pounds has played six years in the NFL.

“He played guard for a year or two, then he played right tackle his junior year and then he stuck around for his senior year and we moved him to left tackle,” Richt said. “It really helped him. He was the second or third pick in the second round and played a long time for the Bills. We think Navaughn is a lot like that.”

Donaldson’s move to right tackle elevated junior Hayden Mahoney from second team to first team at right guard."

His Royal Dudeness

If Donaldson HAS to move to tackle, then the right side is the best. I expect a good year out of him there. Miami has got to start landing tackles in recruiting, especially for 2019 or we will be unable to compete for the ACC title. It will take years to groom them, so not having them in 2018 will cost us in 2020.

mark weaver

Tackles in general, whether offense or defense, we need to land on a consistent basis!

86Cane

If Donaldson is not content with being slow and FAT, and willing to work hard enough to EARN the position, then I am all for him moving to tackle if Coach decides it is best. Whatever helps the teams WIN!

86Cane

If BIGGIE D plays well and Rosier becomes All-ACC at QB then I will GLADLY admit I was WRONG on both accounts. It will mean at a minimum that we face Clemson in the ACC title game once again.

IF we win the ACC title over Clemson then I think I am cool with that. Lets hope Coach Richt got this!

Terrance Sullivan

I second 86 sentiments.

I like it. The Canes LB playing the flat and slot in the Canes base defense last year got exploited against spread teams. I also think McCloud was often picked on by opponents, especially when he was in space. We will see. We want coaches who see what other teams are doing and adjust. I think Diaz is adjusting to something. It will make the Canes more effective against the short passing game that is an important part of college football today. As long as the Canes can still stop the run, this can be an improvement

Pretty much exactly what I was thinking also.

Go Canes!!

Have six passes to the spring game I won’t be using. I’ll f anyone is interested just post here and I’ll find a way to get them to you.

BigWindyCane1

Acccordng to JT Wilcox, the Canes need reinforcements at TE. Miami only has three tight ends on its roster – junior Michael Irvin II, redshirt freshman Brian Polendey and walk-on Nick Ducheine – as they anticipate the arrival of No. 1 overall tight end prospect Brevin Jordan and 4-star prospect Will Mallory.

I have a possible solution. According to Dugans, Darrell Langham, who is listed at 6’4” 225 pounds, is actually 245 pounds. If so, that is TE size, and Langham is experienced and capable of making plays. I don’t know what Langham’s blocking skills are, but if decent, Langham might see more playing time if he moves inside. Irvin was a horrible blocker last year, and two inexperienced freshmen are coming this summer. It seems Langham could add experience and depth at TE, and if he is a decent blocker, he could help the Canes tremendously at TE, because Richards, Thomas, Harley and the other WRs provide a lot of good depth and the very talented Langham will be receive limited playing time at WR l

AeroCane

Good morning
Canes baseball is terrible this year BUT you need to read about their W over Clemson last night. Down by 8, yes 8 in the 9th the came back and tied it, then won in the 12th! Classic (and at Clemson)
Let's hope the OL and NP have a great scrimmage today!

TJL

Windy- USF has a grad transfer TE that’s a free agent

Go Canes!!

We don’t need a TE.

Jordan and Mallory will be ready to make an immediate impact.
