Miami football is a family and Hurricanes football players are members of a unique brotherhood that spans decades.

But for seniors Jaquan Johnson and Sheldrick Redwine, the bond runs much deeper than most. Growing up in the Richmond Heights area of Miami, Johnson and Redwine were two of the brightest stars shining for their local park football program.

"Me and Redwine, we played at the same park for the Richmond Giants and we grew up in the same neighborhood," Johnson said. "We just didn't go to the same middle school, but we've known each other from a while back. Redwine was on a lighter pound than I was, but you knew all the best players in the park. I heard Redwine's name after every game about being one of the hardest hitters at the park. I knew Redwine from growing up."

The duo finally paired up as teammates in high school, sparking the start of a long-lasting friendship while starring for Miami Killian High School.

"You never have to worry when we are with each other," Johnson said. "Even just growing up, it's the same type of thing. We weren't as close as we are now, but we always had each other's back. It takes a village to raise someone and he was part of that village for me just like I was for him."

Johnson was a four-time all county selection at safety for the Cougars and was selected to play in the US Army All-American Bowl before heading to Miami to further his education and football career.

Redwine starred at cornerback for Killian and appeared to be headed to Louisville after his senior year, but a visit to Miami just before National Signing Day ended with a scholarship offer to join Johnson and the Hurricanes in Coral Gables.

"God puts people in your life and we actually took the same path to get where we are," Johnson said. "We had to overcome the same type of circumstances, go to the same high school and same coaching and we both made it to the University of Miami and we are going through it now. He's my roommate now at the college level. Everything is meant for a reason."

I will be on my way to Texas at 6:05am tomorrow
to watch one of the most important games the Miami Hurricanes have had in a long time. This could be the start of really big year, which I believe it will be. Rosier needs to come up big and take care of the ball. He has a lot of play makers to work with and I am believing he is ready this year if what I am hearing is true.

Looking forward to seeing all of my Canespace friends. Canes 31 LSU 13

BigWindyCane1

Interesting quote from CMR about Rosier:

“The greatest improvement he has made is with his deep ball throws,” Richt said on the Joe Rose Show on 560 WQAM. “We have to be able to do that. So many people play man coverage now that you have to take some shots. I think the run-pass option that people run now forces people to play man coverage. If you play a zone, you get a linebacker that is halfway in between a running play and a passing play and you get eaten up.”

BigWindyCane1

Rosier needs to be accurate and consistent. 54% completion rate Rosier had last season is unacceptable, and among the worst in college football. Rosier's 37% on deep balls isn't as bad, but Rosier also had a lot of open receivers at that range.

If Rosier has indeed improved his reads and accuracy like CMR says, the Canes can expect a completion rate of 60-65%. With a completion rate at that level, the Canes will have a prolific offense that will be among the best in the ACC with this roster full of playmakers. Choc and the fullback along with a healthy Richards and Cager, should improve third down and red zone coversions, which were also abismal.

The chart said or so they are really 2 and 2A. Neither separated above the other but I think Weldon’s smooth style will win out eventually.

I have seen it a million times. An athletic black qb with athleticism and a big arm gets all the raves coming in but they often have trouble settling into the nuances of preparation and pocket passing. Too many years playing hero ball is hard for these guys to give up.The white kid who is not as electric just gets lost in the background until one day, all of a sudden, he is the starter.

Weldon is CALM and SMOOTH. It will be VERY difficult for N’Kosi and JW to defeat him moving forward. I just hope we can keep him if he doesn’t win the job next year. He is the type of qb I always want at least one of one the roster.

Shireffs had no poise. He did not have the physical tools to overcome the jitters. Weldon is WAAAAAAYYYYYY more talented. He is a good athlete, just not the slasher like N’Kosi is or the big strong body like JW.

Weldon is sliding under the radar and even with N’Kosi. They both have lots of room to grow. I like them both. But there is something about the way Weldon plays.

Reminds me a lot of the Kenny Kelly /Ken Dorsey situation.

How I see the game going...

LSU will try to establish the run, testing the new tackles Willis and Bethel, my guess is they will have some success there as neither is a run stopper like Willis. The question becomes the second level guys, can SQ55 & MP51 take their RB down soon enough to get LSU into long throwing situations so Garvin Willis & Jackson can do work? LSU's offense hasnt been creative, (outside of Matt Canada) and Im not expecting much out of their new guy. Running north and south is a must for LSU, as east west will get you a whole lot of DE & LBs making plays. For Miami the key is throwing. Forget thinking about establishing a run against front 7's with that kind of talent. Nick Saban's masterclass coaching in 2012 vs LSU taught everyone, you must throw to win. Thats not to say we wont run at all, but that timely draws, and coming uo big on a 3rd and 2, or in the redzone will matter way more than big stats from any which RB, p.s. Dallas at 220 is our best RB for this game, I'm disappointed that Homer couldnt make it to 210. Miami should be aiming to get a couple of TDs as fast as possible (no easy task) and get under very easily rattled Ed O's skin. Ed O would very likely scrap the plan, get desperate and throw, feeding right into The U's strength, pressuring the QB and putting a gold chain on. If LSU is able to manage the sticks with the run game, Miami must bring in one of the bigger DTs to create a road block, I really wish Norton had come back, he'd be the key to this game.

His Majesty The Dude on High

23-20, could go either way, plenty of FGs in a game were both teams turn it over but fail to score TDs.

AfriCane

It’s not LSU, it’s LS. There is only one U!

AfriCane

Soup, what happened to my last post.
It was within guide lines. Did u delete?

Go Canes!!

LSU will not score 20 points on us with that stone age offense.

24-9 Canes with two TDs coming on explosive plays.

BigWindyCane1

LSU defense is tough, and they will be committed to stop the run. They will probably load the box to stop the run. The players and coaches all say that Rosier worked hard in the off-season, and has improved his accuracy and knowledge of the offense and defenses. The QB is the most important decision-maker in running the RPO successfully.

With the way LSU plays defense, I think we are going to find out real soon whether Rosier's accuracy and acumen have improved. If so, with the playmakers that the Canes have on offense and defense this season, this will be a special year.

His Majesty The Dude on High

Posted by: Go Canes!! | August 29, 2018 at 08:02 AM

They will if our O gives them lots of opportunities to be in the redzone. I think it will be a sloppy offensive game, 2 teams with great defenses, poor offenses with 1st game jitters.

His Majesty The Dude on High

Posted by: BigWindyCane1 | August 29, 2018 at 10:35 AM

Thats what we need/want them to do imo. Thomas in the slot should then become pitch and catch, assuming Malik's accuracy can get it done.

His Majesty The Dude on High

Posted by: His Majesty The Dude on High | August 29, 2018 at 01:25 AM

I meant neither is a run stopper like Norton.

His Majesty The Dude on High

A major advantage I can think of for Miami is preparation. I fully expect Mark Richt to have the more prepared team in comparison to Ed Orgeron.

If Miami can complete the shorter passes to Thomas, Harley & Jordan, LSU LBs will have to spread out, and perhaps go into nickel coverage. If that happens Homer, Dallas & Rosier should find some space to make some runs.

Terrance Sullivan

Miami 24 LSU 20. God I hope I am right. This is what I have been thinking alone. Miami Covers the spread and take the under. Go Canes! This will be a Heavyweight Championship Match. With 2 teams extremely similar. Whoever wins the turnover and rushing game wins this Game period.

His Majesty The Dude on High

Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | August 29, 2018 at 11:41 AM

I hope you are right, I just dont see the running game mattering so much as both teams have really athletic front 7s. Beating LSU would be a great statement, but I want to say it now before the fallout should we lose, its a game that doesnt really matter. We have all season to climb up in the rankings should we lose, and winning the national title is not yet a reasonable expectation imo. Winning the Coastal and stacking blue chip players is the floor. I want to beat FSU again more than beating LSU anyways. If we can stack up another deep recruiting class, I think then we can say we are on par with everyone outside of Bama, Clemson & possibly Ohio State, then it will come down to who's got the best QB and defense.

His Majesty The Dude on High

9-3 is the floor, 12-0 is a realistic possibility. My biggest worry is OT should a starter go down. 2019 class needs a minimum of 3 legit OTs, and I would take as many as 5.
