Q: What is the status of Robert Marve? Is he even close to being able to take some snaps in garbage time; if we get some. Do you think or know if he will be RedShirted or not? Go Canes!!!!! Posted by: RealCanesFan | September 25, 2007 at 02:23 PM

A: I answered a similar question last week. From what I’ve been told there is about a 15-20 percent chance Marve actually takes a live snap in a game this year. He still isn’t practicing and will likely be red-shirted.

Cavaleer

Manny, what unit or individual player do you think has benefitted most from Team, Shannon???

Cavaleer

Manny, what's the scoop of Taylor Cook? Is he as good as Harris and Marve or is he a more raw talent who'll need more work and polishing?

86Cane

Canespace LIVE hosts Manny Navarro from the Miami Herald! Please post your questions NOW!!!

Manny

Q: Whats the deal with D.Sharpton , Josh Holmes , & Glenn Sharpe??? Also any updates on recruiting? (whats with all of our commits taking trips) Are Sam Shields & Ryan Hill suspended for the Duke game...True or False??? Posted by: Bryan | September 25, 2007 at 02:05 PM

A: Shannon said after practice that Shields and Hill are not suspended. It was a bad rumor. Sharpton is playing. Josh Holmes is back. Sharpe could play this week. But I think he’s still some time away. No real updated in recruiting.

RT6

Manny, you know Jacory personally right? Any chance he jumps ship and if he does, will the other kids from the west follow their qb? How close of a group are they that they would all go to the same school or do you see some going separate ways?

pb

Manny, do you think Shannon is making a mistake playing guys like Chambers and Bailey sporadically, using up eligibility when they wont really see the field for real game time action.

Manny

Q: Manny, what unit or individual player do you think has benefitted most from Team, Shannon??? Posted by: Cavaleer | September 25, 2007 at 07:59 PM

A: Unit without question is the offensive line. Miami’s offensive line has been near perfect and has even picked up a bit of a mean streak – kind of like the defensive line has had for a long time. I ran this stat in my blog today. But I’ll use it again. They’ve only been penalized 6 times for 40 yards. Six times. Only one holding penalty if I’m not mistaken. Absolutely amazing. As for an individual, I’d say quarterback Kyle Wright. This guy wasn’t exactly a team favorite last year. Some guys thought he too self-centered. He’s earned their respect for winning the job back and being a team player. That’s only a result of what Shannon implemented with his changes.

4thQtr

Manny, also reading Shannon's statement about Cooper fumbling again then he sits, and in comes Shawnbrey McNeal. Does this mean that Derron Thomas is no longer behind Cooper?

Manny

Q: What was Romeo's injury? Was it an ACL? Posted by: Joel | September 25, 2007 at 02:44 PM

A: According to what we came to understand it was an ACL injury. Shannon said Tuesday “he’s a quick healer.”

YOUNGCHRIS757

Manny,

Do you know if Chaz Washington is in the D-Tackle rotation? If not, what the heck happen to him?

Esteban

Manny, where is Romeo practicing at? MLB/WLB/SLB?

Manny

Q: Manny, what is the deal with Tervaris Johnson? The kid was a stud safety a couple of years ago out of HS, is he even on the depth chart anymore? Posted by: SuperCooper | September 25, 2007 at 07:24 PM

A: Good question Super Cooper. Not sure what’s happened to Tervaris. A couple of guys on this team have virtually disappeared. Doug Wiggins anyone? Carlos Armour made a point today during the weekly press conference that may make some sense as to why we aren’t seeing certain players. When we asked him why he missed a few games earlier this season, he didn’t say it was because it was from injury. Rather, it was because he wasn’t in the top three among corners. It leads me to believe Shannon may have an underlying policy about the best in practice really are the only ones who play. Johnson was actually a tight end and safety in high school. He’s big and physical. I could potentially see him move to linebacker if needed. I just think right now he’s being outplayed.

Manny

Q: Manny, you know Jacory personally right? Any chance he jumps ship and if he does, will the other kids from the west follow their qb? How close of a group are they that they would all go to the same school or do you see some going separate ways? Posted by: RT6 | September 25, 2007 at 07:29 PM

A: I don’t know Jacory personally. But I know him well enough to know he’s trying to get a few free trips out of the recruiting process. He told me his first love was actually LSU in the recruiting process. But the Tigers backed away. He’s been all about The U since. He and his teammates were at Thursday’s game. Jacory was wearing a straw hat and having a great time on the sideline. He even started singing along with fans who were chanting for Tommy Streeter to commit to the Canes. Jacory is going to end up a Cane. I’d say there’s a 0.000001 chance he doesn’t. About the same chance as Randy Shannon has of getting fired after this season.

86Cane

How about Tavaris at FB or TE?

Manny...now that the Canes won BIG against TAMU, Have U changed your 9-3 season record prediction that U made pre-season?

Manny

Q: Manny, do you think Shannon is making a mistake playing guys like Chambers and Bailey sporadically, using up eligibility when they wont really see the field for real game time action. Posted by: pb | September 25, 2007 at 08:06 PM

A: PB this is a question that goes much deeper than just the right now. I think Shannon feels having guys like Chambers and Bailey play and not sit out the season goes a lot further than not playing at all. The only reason a redshirt is really beneficial is if the player is not learning anything at practice and the year is being wasted. But if that player is doing the right things in practice but just has better players ahead of him, what good does it do to not at least have him on the sidelines on Saturdays, being in the huddles and learning live and up close. Besides, both of those guys are just an injury away from being second string. When you have a guy at least playing on special teams and the occassional snap here and there, they're learning. I guarantee you the guys who are being redshirted aren't learning as much as the guys on the bench.

Montreal-Cane

Cook is rated about the same as Harris but some scouts have said that he is more polished than Harris...But like zakkee said
the stats are in favour of Jacory...But take into consideration that he is also playing with some of the best talented H.S.
players in the nation...This is not the case for Cook...For the films on Cook go on Rivals. One thing is for sure if Harris, Cook and Marve are all at the U...The QB position is looking good for years to come...

Any thoughts on that Manny???

Manny

Q: I got a question for Manny; Who is the toughest team left on the schedule this year? To me, it's a toss up between VT and BC. FSU might have more talent, but until the new coaches break through to the players, they look like a team of headless chickens running around. Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | September 25, 2007 at 07:33 PM

A: Hard to answer this question right now because most teams should improve in the next few weeks. But if you go on early results, its Boston College (despite the Flutie curse). BC can throw the ball (they rank 10th nationally) and have the best rushing defense in the conference (3rd in the nation). The Eagles also already have a big win on the road at Georgia Tech. Miami will be playing that game on the road in late November in cold weather conditions. Florida State doesn’t look good right now and neither does Virginia Tech, which over William & Mary, Ohio and East Carolina. Not exactly impressive.

86Cane

Crirteria for being redshirted under Shannon:

1. Injuries (Marve, McKenzie)

2. Academic issues or doesn't go to class.

3. Weight room or practice issues.

4. Can't learn the system.

Manny

Q: Manny, also reading Shannon's statement about Cooper fumbling again then he sits, and in comes Shawnbrey McNeal. Does this mean that Derron Thomas is no longer behind Cooper? Posted by: 4thQtr | September 25, 2007 at 08:07 PM

A: I've heard mixed things. I heard McNeal played a lot against A&M because it was the school that finished second to Miami for McNeal and Shannon wanted his Texas players to play in this showcase game. But I don't totally buy that as the only reason. Shannon mentioned McNeal again during his press conference when he mentioned the Cooper fumbling comment. McNeal obviously has some goods. Otherwise, Thomas would have more carries than him right now.

OCALACANE

Sup Manny?
Hope life has been good to U
Legion I have been of the blog for a while, workin.
Manny with our ACC run coming up even if FSU is unranked a victory @ Doak would be huge for this team. Do U see us coming out of Doak with a W?

Cavaleer

Great info Manny. You are definitely the best.

86 ain't so bad either. lol

Manny

Sorry I missed this one Cavaleer...
Q: Manny, what's the scoop of Taylor Cook? Is he as good as Harris and Marve or is he a more raw talent who'll need more work and polishing? Posted by: Cavaleer | September 25, 2007 at 08:02 PM

A: Cook isn't a bad quarterback from what I've seen on film. He has the type of ingredients you like. Big frame, strong arm, athleticism. But I think he'll probably need a little polish. I'm probably a little more bias toward Harris considering I've seen him more often. But Jacory to me is basically a young black Ken Dorsey. Same demeanor. Same leadership skills. Same winning attitude. I also like Marve a lot. He probably has the most accurate arm and cool presence I've ever seen in a high school quarterback. We're going to have quite the quarterback controversy next year on our hands. Trust me.

pb

For two days the draft status of Kyle Wright has been beaten to death.

Do you think Kyle can go on the first day of the draft, or even sneak into the first round with several more performances like the A & M game?

86Cane

McNeal and Chambers are pushing for P/T and will continue to do so. Shannon knows that when the Canes were at their best they had a STABLE of good RBs that would push each other. These guys will continue to do that!

Cavaleer

Manny, what's your feel on early departures and 1st round picks??

We're having a huge debabte about whether Kyle can improve to first round status or not?

T. Good has to be making waves as well.

What's your take

pb

Excellent question Cav!

Old Skool

Do you have any info on the five freshman who called Shannon looking to transfer?

Manny

Q: Manny, do you know if Chaz Washington is in the D-Tackle rotation? If not, what the heck happen to him? Posted by: YOUNGCHRIS757 | September 25, 2007 at 08:08 PM

A: Didn't miss your question this time Youngchris. Not sure where Chaz is. I know he's not in the rotation. I think he's suffering from a case of what 86 categorized a little while ago as a No. 4. He's also behind guys like Vegas Franklin and Dwayne Hendricks who have stepped up their game. He's only a redshirt freshman. Don't be too discouraged.

86Cane

Ocala...remember my call against TAMU? That I said I felt in my gut that we would win? That KW and SS would have career days? That Shannon and Nix would coach their butts off?

Trust me the Canes win at the Doak! I'll be there with Mrs. 86 and she told me that Sean Taylor whispered in her ear that the Canes win, Canes WIN!!! Score prediction coming later...

Manny

Q: Manny, where is Romeo practicing at? MLB/WLB/SLB? Posted by: Esteban | September 25, 2007 at 08:08 PM

A: I'd assume he's back at middle linebacker, but third on the depth chart. Shannon doesn't give anybody their starting spots back. Middle is what Romeo is best at. I don't think he'll play more than in spots.

miamimike01

Do you feel that after the offensive performances last Thursday, that this offense can duplicate it and become more consistent?

OCALACANE

86... U called it!!!
U agree it would be huge for us to come out of Doak with a W
Then The Noles beat Lizards!
Florida Cup again!!!

Q: How about Tavaris at FB or TE? Manny...now that the Canes won BIG against TAMU, Have U changed your 9-3 season record prediction that U made pre-season? Posted by: 86Cane | September 25, 2007 at 08:13 PM

A: Not a bad idea 86. But why not just move Kylan back to offense then? I think Tavaris is going to end up being the next Willie Coopoer. Someone who doesn't really start contributing until their junior or senior season. But he's one of those valuable utility weapons. Just watch. As for my preseason predicition. I'm still sticking too it. The win against A&M was impressive. But this team isn't completely out of the woods yet. They've got to do it on the road now. I think BC and Georgia Tech are two dangerous games... just as FSU and Virginia Tech are.

miamimike01

Manny,
per an article you posted last week, there were 5 Freshmen from other programs calling Randy Shannon. Can you shed some light on who they might be? (assuming one was Deonte Thompson)

Mike

Manny, are you surprised by what Gooden has done this year? Kid has become a monster at MLB

86Cane

Manny...just curious, I know U and Shandel are "friends" and all but I know U are also competitive by nature. It must feel good that your blog is smoking his, right?

As Green posted over at your blog, U worked until 3:45 AM to bring us the goods and the natives over there at the SS were getting restless when the Saluki failed to show for work for three or four days?

U don't have to answer if U don't want to but all I know is that Canespacers love Manny Navarro and support the Miami Herald!

Manny

Q: Manny, what's your feel on early departures and 1st round picks?? We're having a huge debabte about whether Kyle can improve to first round status or not? T. Good has to be making waves as well.
What's your take. Posted by: Cavaleer | September 25, 2007 at 08:25 PM

A: Wow. First round? You guys serious about Kyle. Look I know he played well on Thursday. But he's got a lot more to prove -- and even still, I'm not sure he smells the first day because of his body of work at Miami. Wright has the size, 6-4, 225 and arm to make it. But he'll have to basically finish the season as the ACC Offensive Player of the Year to make his way into the first three rounds. And that's a long shot considering how far back he's started to get rolling.

Tavares Gooden on the other hand could do what Jon Beason did this past season. Gooden has always been a guy with the physical gifts -- 6-2, 238, 4.5-speed, amazing body and tremendous strength. He could make it into the first round. But my take on who ends up in the first round has stayed the same since before the start of this season.

Both Calais Campbell and Kenny Phillips will likely be gone after this season. Their physical gifts and talents are going to land them big pay days. I think Calais could even sneak into the top five overall.

Darnell Jenkins is a guy who is definitely helping his draft status. With each tough catch he's making, he's moving up the draft. I think Nuke will get into the first day by the time its all said and done.

Montreal-Cane

86 the ss is a joke this year...The Herald
is among the best newspaper in America...

Manny

Q: Do you have any info on the five freshman who called Shannon looking to transfer? Posted by: Old Skool | September 25, 2007 at 08:27 PM
A: I don't have a list of names. This is what Shannon basically told us. But if you do the math, one had to be Deonte Thompson. I have several sources in the office who called me to discuss the rumors and say that none of it was going to happen. We didn't talk particular names. But he said all of the phone calls came from players who were recruited heavily by Miami last year and signed elsewhere in the last year.

Eh, I like Shandal. Dude brings some very good info. Don't know what the hatin is all about

BOSSBANWAGON

Last time I remember 86 posted on the SS asking for the blog wars to stop. Now you guys are starting this **** up again.

YOUNGCHRIS757

Manny,

I might be the only one, but I have yet to see Michael Barrow since the season started (and, yes, i was actually looking for him). Is he up in the booth or something, or is he hiding on the sidelines? If he is on the field during the games, have you seen him get animated on the sidelines at any point, ala Coach Hurtt (godly leap) and coach Shannon (Epps knife-edge chop)?

TICAL

Wow, Manny seemed more surpised than me when he heard the talk about Kyle being a first round pick

242 Cane

THANK YOU MANNY!!!!!! SHUT UP NOW AQUA AND ZAKKEE!!! LOL Kyle in the first round my @#$%

miamimike01

Super and BOSS,

settle down guys. He didn't say anything about Shandel. Nobody's looking for a fight or to start it all over again.

86Cane

Super and Boss...the blog wars have passed, I was just curious that's all. Let it go and let's focus on the the Canes!

Manny

Q: Do you feel that after the offensive performances last Thursday, that this offense can duplicate it and become more consistent? Posted by: miamimike01 | September 25, 2007 at 08:33 PM

A: I definitely think Miami is capable of duplicating its offensive performance and become more consistent. This team has struggled on offense for various reasons the last three years, but the biggest were the questions at quarterback, the lack of talent at receiver, the injuries to the offensive line and the guy calling the plays. This team is better in all of those categories -- especially the offensive line. It was just a matter of the quarterback and receivers finally falling into sync. Patrick Nix is a better offensive coordinator than the previous two guys who were here. It's going to result in more wins and more offense this year. But what Canes fans need to stop doing is comparing it to the distant past and instead to the recent past. Little by little, this offense will once again become one of the best in the country when Nix has more talent to work with and players grow up. You think UM's offensive line is good now? Can you imagine next season when Jason Fox, Chris Rutledge, Orlando Franklin and Reggie Youngblood become second and third-year starters? How about when Robert Marve or Jacory Harris is leading this offense with Sam Shields, a junior, split wide with guys like Leonard Hankerson, Aldarius Johnson, Davon Johnson and others racing downfield. Oh, and guys like Javarris James and Graig Cooper breaking guys ankles as a sophomore and junior. Trust me. This offense is going to be amazing in the next few years.

Esteban

Manny, what's up with Kylan Robinson? haven't seen him touch the field even on special teams.

E K

Hey Manny, what are the chances that we get quality time for our second team?
