i think BC beats VT thursday. VT's offense was already really weak this season and now Ore and Tyrod Taylor are banged up. I don't think they'll be able to score enough to beat BC with their starting qb and rb hurt unless they get big time special teams play.

A little update from Canes 305. I posted on this yesterday. Everyone keep praying for not only our Canes Family on the West Coast but everyone out there right now.
http://www.allcanes.com/blog/
Thanks, U Family...
To my Canes brethren who dropped a line today, thanks. Still hanging tough. No idea what kind of coverage this is getting back east, but I can't imagine it's too much as I'm still getting stupid joke emails from long-time pals all day who obviously have no clue I've been displaced. A few old school buds did shoot me a text and that was appreciated.
Holed up in Dana Point at a hotel riding out the disaster. Part of being married as I trekked north with the wife and in laws while my folks, brother, etc. are holed up at a friend's place on the coast.
My brother attempted to negotiate the terrain a bit to check out the homes, but was turned around halfway there. Seems no matter if you're in Dana Point or coastal San Diego, attempting to get a little bit inland is simply brutal.
Got some updates from neighbors and it's hit or miss. For now, my neighborhood is out of the woods. That said, they say you can see the flames miles away and there's a lot of dry brush between there and where our place. With Santa Ana winds in full force again tomorrow and the next few days, this is far from over. The evacuation was lifted in my 'hood but everyone was basically told to sleep with one eye open and ready to go again, hence my staying 40 miles north.
My folks and brother/sister in law (Escondido) and my in laws (Rancho Santa Fe) are still in danger regarding their homes. I'm glued to the news and have been online all night checking local media sites, blogs, etc. and it's nervewracking as things change on a dime. At least when it was hurricane season, I knew I could grab a few hours of shut eye when the storm was on the move. With this firestorm, leave for dinner, come back and it's a brand new day. Friggin scary.
Beyond surreal, my friends. I've done hurricanes. Now it's full on firestorms. I feel like I've lived through two Biblical plagues and this is hell. San Diego is going up in flames. I'm stunned with every news clip that flashes on the screen.
Weather-wise, we're f'ed again for Tuesday. 8% humidity and 44 mph gusts and climbing. Santa Ana winds remain in full force. Started Sunday and will roll through Wednesday night. Great timing, nature.
Obviously I didn't get to my post Canes/Noles blog. I apologize. I've had nothing but time, but I couldn't get my head straight. I'm in 'natural disaster mode' right now - reading, watching, praying, questioning, hoping.
Keep the thoughts and prayers coming. They're beyond appreciated.

I watched the MNF game last trying to watch peyton to see how he plays the qb position and man does he stare down his wrs. I think he stares them down more than KW. I couldnt believe that the Jaguars couldnt stop them. They got their hands on a number of passes but I think he only looked at wayne and clark or dumped it off. i thought he was supposed to be the master of looking off defenders
Posted by: tyrone | October 23, 2007 at 09:31 AM
People keep ragging him about it....
Yep, I imagine people like LSU2007CHUMPS in his face all day during his visit. He probably told them yeah I loved LSU and had his fingers, legs and b@lls crossed.

I know this isn't football related but it is Canes related since some of our own are going through this. Especially hits home for me. My wifes uncle is pretty close to where all this is going down. Please say a pray for everyone caught up in these fires.

tyrone;
Manning stares them to folow the route and all of a sudden changes to his other options. This is how he was getting Wayne all the passes. Even Wayne told the reporter that Harrison can have the spotlight, that way he can get the passes.

ptf,
I didnt notice that last night. Harrison was a non factor last night and manning rarely ever looked his way. The only time I noticed him look off was on the last TD but even that was a busted coverage. He was staring wayne and clark down the whole night.
Posted by: tyrone | October 23, 2007 at 09:39 AM
Yeah I agree with you. I do believe that he does it with intention to set-up the DB later on.
Posted by: PLAY THE FRESHMEN!! | October 23, 2007 at 09:41 AM
I dont follow recruiting too much but does anyone know of the SFL recruits that we have missed out on the last few years because coker was the HC? I always hear people say he neglected sfl but I was always curious on who these guys are
Posted by: tyrone | October 23, 2007 at 09:41 AM
Anyone have the article from canestime regarding recruits "PODCAST"............
Posted by: PLAY THE FRESHMEN!! | October 23, 2007 at 09:42 AM
Santonio Holmes, Thaddeus Lewis, Ali Highsmith Jr, Antwan Barnes,
Posted by: PLAY THE FRESHMEN!! | October 23, 2007 at 09:43 AM
i noticed manning staring guys down last night but defenses know that he does that a lot to set them up so they have to stay true to their coverage in case he switches it up on them. so he can decide on plays to say forget it i'm staring him down and get away with it. plus you know how it goes - as long as it works.
Posted by: Esteban | October 23, 2007 at 09:47 AM
ali highsmith wasn't because of coker - was because of admissions.
Posted by: Esteban | October 23, 2007 at 09:48 AM
DWAYNE BOWE, JR Bryant, D. MOnroe..
Heck, If you check Florida and FSU roster most of their secondary is from the tri-county area.
Posted by: PLAY THE FRESHMEN!! | October 23, 2007 at 09:49 AM
Yeah, nonetheless we lost him to another NCAA team. If we cannot have him, show some love have him go to prep school with our help.
If you turn your back on him, it eventually hurts you with other borderline Qualifiers (perfect example Preston Parker and Patrick Robinson)

Like Cooper, Randy stayed on him and visited himself and reassured that he was welcome and Miami still wanted him. I think LC perhaps did not follow up on them.

Thoughts & love out to the West Coast...
I know all too well about the SoCal Fire Season; went through it almost every year that I lived out there. Luckily living in the middle of the San Fernando Valley, all I had to deal with was the ashes that would blow down from the hills covering everything.
My oldest brother whom was in the Cali Air Gaurd used to work on the C-130's out of Van Nuys that would drop water on the flames... Used to see 'em all over the sky; I'm sure they're logging in major flight hours now.

Having an offensive line and a RB that can pick up a blitz or chip the DE makes a world of difference. It can give you an extra 3 to 4 seconds and in football, that is the difference between a completion and a sack. The TAM game is a classic example, if Kyle has time, he looks great, if they're in on him as soon as the ball is snap, and he doesn't stand a chance. The quick roll out passes to the RB and TE fits Kyle's playing style, but unfortunately we can't do that all day if we expect to win. People are constantly ragging on Kyle, but if we pay close attention we would see that the line doesn't give him a chance (SOMETIMES!)Then go back to when Ken Dorsey was playing, He could sit in the pocket and fix himself a sandwich before throwing the ball to Andre Johnson. Not making any excuses for him because unfortunately he is still a 5yr work in progress, like someone said yesterday, he will make a great 3rd string backup in the NFL someday. But we should distribute the blame evenly when it comes to analyzing the offense.

Aybody know how many tackles T. Goody had vs FSU. I've been looking for a site with accurate defensive stats but not much luck.
Posted by: slim32 | October 23, 2007 at 10:05 AM
Nova;
We (mostly) all agree with your opinion. However, KW needs to check off which he does not do very well and it kills us. I personally would love for KW and KF to be the best out there. I wondered why RS does not bring in KF in certain situations. (other team blitzing too much) etc...
Posted by: PLAY THE FRESHMEN!! | October 23, 2007 at 10:05 AM
slim32;
He had 10, 2 Recovered Fumbles.
C. McCARTHY had 10.
T. McCray had 8-10.
I am not 100%, but like you said diff sited have diff stats.
Posted by: PLAY THE FRESHMEN!! | October 23, 2007 at 10:08 AM
NovaCane, an extra 3 or 4 seconds to add to the first 3 or 4 seconds? or 3 or 4 seconds total?
Posted by: Esteban | October 23, 2007 at 10:09 AM
i truly believe that mannings wrs are so good that it doesnt matter because you still dont know what the route is going to be. They sell the out when running an inroute and vice versa. I think staring down the wr is only costly when going over the middle or when the qb is late with the ball.
Posted by: jimmy | October 23, 2007 at 10:09 AM
DWAYNE BOWE, JR Bryant, D. MOnroe,Santonio Holmes, Thaddeus Lewis, Ali Highsmith Jr, Antwan Barnes
so this is it. all I ever hear is how RS has sofla on lock and how wwe missed out on all of these players under coker. Thaddeus lewis is at Duke so that tells you something. I understand that he has turned out to be solid player but I dont think he was a must get at the time. JR bryant stinks in tally so I dont see where he helps much. we could have used dwayne bowe and santonio holmes at receiver though.
Posted by: tyrone | October 23, 2007 at 10:15 AM
Este, IMO...If you give any QB with decent WR and 6 sec he "SHOULD" be able to complete the pass! (if) there is some sort of seperation from the DB.
Posted by: NovaCane | October 23, 2007 at 10:22 AM
What happen with Antwan Barnes, grades?
Posted by: NovaCane | October 23, 2007 at 10:30 AM
KW, can do just about everything as a QB except read a zone. Its like Krytonite to him. He struggles with picking up the dropping LB, hence most of his Ints are by LBs. He stuggles with finding the windows in them. Although I think the routes that are called are part of the problem. Everything seems to be a crossing route vs. slants, post, seems.
Posted by: IN_Cane | October 23, 2007 at 10:37 AM
KW has time. Lots of it most of the time this year and still he is dazed and confused. There are no excuses for his play. He looks good at times more often this season than in the past and lets hope that trend continues through the rest of the season. He's a senior and should be better than he is, but if he gets better each game than that is all we can hope for.
Better late than never.

I am not asking this to sound like I am pro-coker I just want a better understanding of what people are complaining about. Those players dont sound like enough to have put us over the top.
Posted by: tyrone | October 23, 2007 at 10:42 AM
Larry's problem was just the players he brought in or didn't bring in, it was the culture he created with his program.
He was comfortable and happy to be a Cane and his players became that way and that is NOT Miami football.
You get hurt, you lose your job. You miss an assignment and someone else takes your spot till you win it back.
Larry thought a pat on the head was enough to get kids on track and obviously that didn't work.
Posted by: The Truth | October 23, 2007 at 10:46 AM
I think two of Cokers biggest failuers was the fact that ST. Thomas had two offensive linemen who where D1 prospects last year and neither one was actively recruited by the U until near the end. With the problems we had on the OL how in the hell could you not recruit two kids located in your back yard who had no academic issues? One of the kids started as a freshman for ND last season.
Posted by: vince | October 23, 2007 at 10:48 AM
Truth, I agree with that but I read alot where people say that we recruited horribly the last few years coker was here and that we neglected sofla. this being the main reason why we have struggled. I just wanted to know who those supposed players were?
Posted by: tyrone | October 23, 2007 at 10:54 AM
Larry couldn't command the respect that is needed to run any football program. He lost most of his coaches (Sol, Kehoe etc...)and almost every single player on that team.
Posted by: The Truth | October 23, 2007 at 10:55 AM
The last thing I am is a Coker apologist but it was well known that many of the top athletes in Dade and Broward had academic issues which would have made it difficult to get into UM. The thing RS is doing early in the process is discussing academics with all recruits and emphasizing the importance of grades. Whenever you read about a recruit having contact with the current coaches they all mention how the discussions centered around academics and things going on in their lifes.
Posted by: vince | October 23, 2007 at 10:56 AM
A safety from Dade county who we lost to FSU last year (his cousin played for UM)told me the difference in speaking to Coker and Bowden was like driving a ford compared to a BMW. He said Coker was not good in selling the program and it was as if his pitch was forced where Bowden was like sitting in the living room speaking to your grandfather.
Posted by: vince | October 23, 2007 at 11:00 AM
I'm not really going to get into the whole recruiting side of it. Obviously, the players he wanted, pegged and signed aren't good enough, right? A lot of that has to do with getting the right fit for what you do. He didn't exactly have a bead on what he wanted to do.
Posted by: The Truth | October 23, 2007 at 11:04 AM
Vince, those are great points...
Posted by: The Truth | October 23, 2007 at 11:04 AM
Mostly its about competition every single day on every single play in practice. Larry could never instil that idea. He was soft and the players became that under him.
They were all just happy to trot out in their shiny new helmets showing off the pretty littel orange green U they just got.
Posted by: The Truth | October 23, 2007 at 11:06 AM
Look around the country and every game you see a kid from south florida making a big play for someone else...not all of those kids have grade issues. I do agree academics was a part of the problem and may still be with Randy (we won't know till that faitful Wed in Feb), but this team moving forward will get the most of each kid they bring. That couldn't be said under Coker because he just didn't have what it took to lead.
That goes back to my example about coaching vs supierior talent. 2001 he was the same guy as he was in 2006. In 2001 he had the horses, not so much last season.

"KW has time. Lots of it most of the time this year and still he is dazed and confused."
Truth, please tell which games, other than TAMU, he had "lots of time" so I can go back and look at the replays, maybe I missed something.
