When U think about school spirit at the University of Miami, the first thought that obviously comes to mind is football. With five football national championships in our beloved Canes' trophy case and an immeasurable amount of former UM players in the NFL it is easy to understand how students, alumni and fans of the U obviously have reasons to be in the football spirit year round. NFLU still dominates the news and the headlines.
-
After football season ends, some students just shut down their fanaticism until it picks back up for the spring game. That needs to change. There are some of us who bleed orange and green year round no matter the weather, the particular sport or the particular teams record. Those few students who happen to follow our beloved Canes year round, through good times and bad, seem to be growing in numbers, and effort and enthusiasm. The momentum appears unstoppable.
-
The recent success of our basketball team, which in case U weren't paying attention to has started the 2008 season with a 14-2 record, has added to the great tradition the Canes have established with multiple national championships in baseball and football. Jim Morris and the Canes are poised for another run at another National title in 2008.
-
Just as there was a West End Zone Crew once in the Beautiful Old Lady, there is now a developing clique in the Bank United Center. Starting with the students, and hopefully a group which will one day include others who love the Hurricanes, we are starting to build a fan base for UM basketball that will rival those fans at football games.
-
I am, of course, referring to a small but growing legion known as "Haith's Faithful". Essentially, Coach Haith's Faithful is a group of students who have promised to attend any UM home basketball game that they can conceivably get to. Hard core Cane fanatics intent on causing havoc and chaos on the court.
-
If this idea could possibly grow to include season ticket holders and general admission fans, the BUC would start looking like Cameron Indoor Stadium. And if U thought home field advantage was important for football, it is safe to say that home court es mas importante for basketball!
-
So join us won't you at the BUC for Canes basketball. It could be the best thing you have done in a long, long time!

Nice one RT6-I still have hope...after the N.C. game.

RT6 is a student insider on campus at UM who reports exclusively for Canespace.
He attends UM basketball games with the Canespace banner, wrote this blog and has more features planned as the EEs are seen on and around campus...

Lerentee McCray says he didn't come to UM because we kept recruiting LBs after he committed...LOL!
Spoken like a true Turd. He admittedly fears competition and feels he's the only LB a team would ever need. Shannon has ways of getting the kids that fit our mentality. All the kids that think they're better than they really are, are all going elsewhere. Coming off a 5-7 season...we're getting true Canes!
Posted by: Zakkee | January 17, 2008 at 07:42 PM
llrm, not just this last season. I'm meant since he's been DC for Kansas overall (6 seasons). How have his defenses fared against our upcoming opponents TAMU '08 and OU in 2009.
Posted by: Zakkee | January 17, 2008 at 07:47 PM
Zakkee...I'm on the research on the new DC from KU. Give me a day or two and I will have all the stats and comparisons U need to make your head spin!

Thanks..I had a feeling you were on it.

Guys like barrow, and hurt can learn alot from a guy who's last name is young but he's 61.
Plus you know shannon is not trying to hire a guy that has a big ego and the fact that bill doesn't mind working under shannon says alot about him. Also, irregardless, we got a defensive coordinator that the players won't be second guessing. This guy is no fool, he's worked on the west coast, now he gets to work at like bobby bowden said, "The way we play defense, you'd think we evented it".
If tim walton thought shannon was going to sit around and watch that shat again he must be smoking. SO far, shannon has gotten rid of guys he didn't actually hire to UM, shannon has weeded out most of the none UM type players, so it is now with the coaching staff. We know the aggression will be here to stay and once bill gets more accustomed to the players at UM, that's when the fun begans.
I like hurt, with all the d-lineman coming in, it can only help that he has a proven guy with d-lineman as the dc, so we know shannon and barrow will tighten up the linebackers, mcgriff, you got the secondary. moncur should improve, big dix, ojomo, phuck it, start the games now.

zak- good question. no idea. but i'm having my secretary 86 look that up for you and she'll have a response for you in a day or 2.

Zakkee- Our recruits want to rebuild, while Fla's recruits want instant gratification. We are getting character..
Posted by: M.H. | January 17, 2008 at 07:53 PM
LOL llrm!
MH, We need to seriously F@#* them up next year! I'm sick of the Gaytors...they want our swag...bad.
Posted by: Zakkee | January 17, 2008 at 07:58 PM
lol, zak, what did lerentree say, lol, did he think he was suppose to be the only linebacker in the class or something. Most guys are not being realistic, but the guys shannon's recruiting, guys like joe wylie and spence have said exactly what a lot of the new guys coming in need to realize, they both pretty much said they have to get they're bodies stronger so they can compete at the college level.
Ask kp, although he did played pretty go against lsu, joseph addai showed kp that at the college level, they finish off runs by going forward, kp made the tackle and got up with that true Hurricane spirit, but bo pelini was over their tryingto give kp the business after that play. The difference was, kp was a freshman, addai was a senior and of course 1st round pick.

#1 reason we're better of without larentee mcgay:
he didnt do sh-- during the US Army AA game. in fact, i remember not even knowing he was in the damn thing until after PB&J's announcement, when he went up and congratulated PB&J on the sidelines. kid didnt't make 1 single play.
on the other hand- Brown and Forston were all over the place.
good riddance.
Posted by: long live ron mexico! | January 17, 2008 at 08:02 PM
Zakk, I had a similar question.
They didn't play OU or TT in the last two years.
In '06 they gave up
37 to Toledo
39 to Neb.
42 to OKSt.
42 to Mizzou
I don't know the stats from the games, turnovers, field position...
'07
36 to Mizzou. Everything else was shut down.
Now they didn't play anyone serious...Colorado, A&M and Iowa St.
So we have to take with talent into consideration....

What's the latest on the MNW boys and Futch???
It would be a real shame if they get screwed over something that was out of their control....
Posted by: Cavaleer | January 17, 2008 at 08:09 PM
i didn't even know he was on a the team. he is afraid of king athur!
Posted by: masscanefan | January 17, 2008 at 08:09 PM
Cav, Futch is already enrolled. MNW boys should be by Monday
Posted by: SuperCooper | January 17, 2008 at 08:11 PM
Calvin, Young has his eyes on the prize....National Champions.
He knows that KU season was a damm lucky one.
They didn't play OU, TT or TX.
Now, with some real deep talent, he'll be able to do all the things he dreamt of doing in college.
Shannon's doing a mini-Michigan to the state of Kansas...swiping their best player ever, and their best coach. Michigan swiped WVU's FB and BB coaches in consecutive years.
Posted by: Cavaleer | January 17, 2008 at 08:12 PM
Super,
I have my fingers crossed!
Posted by: NavyCane4Life | January 17, 2008 at 08:14 PM
Allllriggggghhthtttt!!!
Super to the rescue.
Speaking of Cooper, did you post that about him wanting to be 205-210 by August???
If he's that size and hitting the holes the same way, JJ better step it up.
Any word on my man Harper??? I think he's a Tiger. No loss though. I want to see McNeal and Chambers add some muscle and blow up.
Posted by: Cavaleer | January 17, 2008 at 08:14 PM
This shows that Shannon doesn't care about controlling the D. The Cover 2 is no more. Thank goodness, it is worthless against the elite teams IMO
Young likes to play man to man and have the CB's play press coverage. That is why we need to get 3 CB in this class. Harris, Bryant, and Baker/Telemaque/Hester
Posted by: SuperCooper | January 17, 2008 at 08:15 PM
Who's the kid who just signed with UF?? Another WR?? Nooo, Oscar's not that stupid is he??
Posted by: Cavaleer | January 17, 2008 at 08:16 PM
Cavaleer,
Yeah I think Harper is definitely a Tiger now, that James Davis is gone. They will probably use him with CJ Spiller because they love the 2 back system.
Posted by: MinnesotaCane4Life | January 17, 2008 at 08:16 PM
anyone have any U recruiting news?
Posted by: masscanefan | January 17, 2008 at 08:17 PM
Super, why not all five of them?? We have the need there more than anywhere at this point.
Posted by: Cavaleer | January 17, 2008 at 08:17 PM
Yea I did, dude is running track too. Which is good. Coop just needs to make sure that he doesn't gain too much weight
Even though I really like Coop, IMO McNeal can win the job next year. Out of all of our RB, he is the most complete.
Baby J really needs to step up his game. He could get passed over by Chambers, McNeal, and Cooper if he doesn't get motivated and rebounds from last year
As for Harper, I'm holding out hope. People are saying that the coaches feel pretty confident about him. If he was going to Clemson with his buddy he would have commited last weekend. Coaches are going to roll out the red carpet for him in two weeks
Posted by: SuperCooper | January 17, 2008 at 08:19 PM
If Eric Smith commits to Clemson, our chances get better. Or so the people in the know say...
Posted by: SuperCooper | January 17, 2008 at 08:21 PM
How's this for a recruit? Chip off the old block. Like father like son? Hope he can play....

Some stats on Mr. Young's D:
"Overall Defense
2003 85
2004 41
2005 11
2006 94
2007 12
Scoring Defense
2003 84
2004 34
2005 28
2006 81
2007 4
Rushing Defense
2003 96
2004 23
2005 3
2006 28
2007 8
Passing Defense
2003 56
2004 76
2005 59
2006 119
2007 49
The trend is obvious here. He turned one of the worst defenses into one of the best with the obvious exception being 2006. That year would worry me more if he hadn't bounced back the very next year with a stellar defense making 06 an outlier or aberration. I'm sure 06 has a valid excuse like the graduated everyone or were decimated by injuries. At a school like Kansas, I imagine you don't have all the depth in the world to survive the injury bug, if that's what happened.
The other thing that I like is that he fields a very stout run defense. Two top ten run defenses in the past 3 years and even in 06 when the defense as a whole stunk, the run defense was 28.
Edit - For reference, here are the stats for 2002, the year before he took over:
Overall Defense: 112
Scoring Defense: 115
Rushing Defense: 114
Passing Defense: 60"

Zak-Turd have not heard that in awhile, very funny!!
Wow some excitement, good B Ball read! Who was the author? Or was it there and I overlooked? Anyway my question is how can we beat a team that almost beat NC and lose to a soso team? That totally makes me crazy. Youth? Flat? Overconfident?
Good to see the cane soldiers/sailors/marines/airman are blogging from Iraq!
Go Canes!
Posted by: canechic | January 17, 2008 at 08:22 PM
Oh I forget, Xavier, the son of Shannon to play for his father.
Posted by: rubcatcane | January 17, 2008 at 08:23 PM
cav that's adrian bushell, good CB, formerly of pace high school, teamate of dvd until he moved to texas last season. supposedly he's a huge miami fan and he was going to visit this weekend or next and he was ours to lose.
apparently not.

rub, thanks for the link. I remember ITU mentiond this a week ago. But I thought we don't accept transfers?
Posted by: SuperCooper | January 17, 2008 at 08:26 PM
It’s interesting how many players from last year’s team with much game playing experience. Especially at the key positions that we are recruiting (LBs and WRs), what would it mean for the U if players like (LB’s) Sharpton, Adkins, R. Davis, G. Cook, McCarthy, A. Bailey and (WR’s) Hankerton, R. Hill, S. Shields, Kayne Farquharson, K. Jones & even J. Mckenzie all raise their game to the next level. In an ideal situation that’s probably exactly what you would want as a coach and only play the freshmen that will contribute. Just my thoughts.
Posted by: Alex D | January 17, 2008 at 08:27 PM
he probably will walk-on or gets free tution because his dad is an employee of the U. anyone know who is visiting this weekend?
Posted by: masscanefan | January 17, 2008 at 08:29 PM
Supercoop, this is the mother of all transfers! Besides, I don't know if we sacrifice any ships for his boy. Sounds like a smart one and is going in on academic scholi.
Anyway, I feel fot the boy Shannon. The dad probably will be ten times harder on him. LOL
Posted by: rubcatcane | January 17, 2008 at 08:31 PM
last i heqard you have to be working at the U for 15 years before your kids get free tuition. i could have heard wrong tho
Posted by: long live ron mexico! | January 17, 2008 at 08:33 PM
lots of schools have free tution for children not sure how many years you have to be working there. good for the kid to want to transfer and play for his dad. this recruiting years seems to be dragging on. its time to sign them and get ready for spring ball
Posted by: masscanefan | January 17, 2008 at 08:36 PM
long live as dedicated as Randy is to the U, his son should go for free. Lets call Donna!
Posted by: canechic | January 17, 2008 at 08:37 PM
he probably will walk-on or gets free tution because his dad is an employee of the U. anyone know who is visiting this weekend?
Posted by: masscanefan | January 17, 2008 at 08:29 PM
That is correct on both accounts. Tuition remission for UM employee dependents allows them to attend not exactly, but next to FREE. I know from experience...
Posted by: 86Cane | January 17, 2008 at 08:40 PM
LLRM...that is NOT accurate.
Posted by: 86Cane | January 17, 2008 at 08:40 PM
Canechic...U missed it at the top of the article, it was RT6 from campus reporting...
Posted by: 86Cane | January 17, 2008 at 08:41 PM
hence my disclaimer 86- "i could have heard wrong tho"
Posted by: long live ron mexico! | January 17, 2008 at 08:43 PM
His dad makes $1M a year coaching. I think he can afford one year tuition at the "U"
Posted by: MDCane | January 17, 2008 at 08:44 PM
...also the kid might just want to be around his dad.
Posted by: MDCane | January 17, 2008 at 08:46 PM
LLRM...hey I'm just your secretary so I'm just trying to do my job over here!
SuperCooper already did some MAJOR research on the new DC (posted above) so we are on our way...
Posted by: 86Cane | January 17, 2008 at 08:47 PM
yep that is what I thought 86 - good job I would love to go to more Basket Ball games. I hope they step it up on Weds. and beat the tarheels.
Posted by: canechic | January 17, 2008 at 08:49 PM
86- be a good secretary and find the correct info for me
Posted by: long live ron mexico! | January 17, 2008 at 08:53 PM
On his son, Xavier Shannon, who plays center at Florida International, and
SS Shandel interviewed Shannon regarding coaching son. I guess the son wore down his dad. This Dad, contrary to being perceived as rigid and unaccomodating, can change. Interview was around March of 07. Very glad for them.
""whether he could see himself coaching his son:"
"No...I'll never coach my son, no matter what the circumstances. He could be the #1 draft pick in the NFL and if I was on the team, I would never coach my son. He needs the opportunity to grow and prosper and be himself and not have me watching over him 24 hours a day.""
