Insurance companies often refer to natural disasters, such as mammoth hurricanes like Hurricane Andrew pictured at left, as “acts of God” when explaining liability. Those who live in South Florida can attest to how devastating these events are.
As Canes fans we’ve been privileged to see many of God’s finest acts, among them the 2001 national champion Hurricanes football team being perhaps the most devastating of them all.
But slowly and surely, we’re witnessing the birth of another cataclysm, one defined not by the sounds of bodies crunching but by the deafening *tink* of an aluminum bat connecting on a 450 foot home run.
Ironically it seems to take acts of God to beat this particular team. Most recently torrential rain forced a rainout, negating a win. Before that the rotation of the earth caused time to elapse and forced the Canes to board a plane and suffer a loss after only 8 innings. And, back when the season was young, the head coach of the Gators sold his soul to buy a single win against the behemoth that is the 2008 Hurricanes baseball team.
So perhaps the last item was more an act of the devil, but you get the idea. These Canes are seemingly unbeatable, with superior pitching featuring young lefty aces Eric Erickson and Chris Hernandez and an absolutely breath-taking lineup highlighted by Yonder Alonso and Jemile Weeks hitting above .400 and really not a weakness at the plate from positions 1 through 9.
The competition has hardly been weak, with strong ACC opponents and a ranked Florida team already among the vanquished. They’ve scored over 10 runs in 7 of their last 9 games, and average over 9.5 per outing. Only a 2-1 win vs. NC State qualifies as a pitchers duel, but it at least shows the Canes are up to the task.
In the months ahead the Canes play top 5 ranked teams FSU on the road and UNC at home while playing a largely challenging schedule. We’ll even see our good friends from St. Mary’s (Ca) on the diamond after eliminating them on the hardwood in the first round of the NCAA tourney.
At the end of all this is the ACC tournament in Jacksonville, and the long road to Omaha. If they can maintain this clip, we will be able to say we saw the baseball equivalent of that monster 2001 UM football team.

I must say we needed a game like this to come back to reality and don't take NO TEAM LIGHTLY. I don't care how bad their record is Miami have to play every game like we are playing in the WORLD SERIES. Every team is looking to knock us down. Morris should keep all his starters in to start every game. NO Exceptions.

Posted by: True Cane | March 25, 2008 at 10:20 PM
it is true, this baseball team is something special. im sitting here in richter 'studying' for chem, but as you all can guess i had gametracker up keeping watch. hopefully ill be able to make it out next week :-( anyway, 2008 seems a lot like 1999, when we won a baseball championship and our football team was built into perfection.
Posted by: reggaebob | March 25, 2008 at 10:28 PM
football team was starting to be built into perfection***
the 1999 football season didnt happen, i dont know what all these people say when some old guy named 'bobby' had a perfect team.....

reggae, you're doing a great job studying. Just as good as one as I'm doing studying for my sports injuries test tomorrow. The office is a fairly funny show though...

LOL @ Bobby Bowden's program. Look at one of their alumnus, Antonio Cromartie, had to say about the state of affairs at Free Shoes University:
"Personally that's one reason why I don't come back to Florida State. What goes on here, how they treat former players, alumni that's played here. How they treat us, that's one reason. The only reason I'm here (today at Pro Day) is because of my God brother.

Another 10 run performance. GO CANES!

Some links and info to go along with my article:
Baseball America pegs the ACC the country's second best baseball conference behind the SEC
http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/college/08ABCA.pdf
Baseball America writer says Canes are ACC best but Florida isn't meant to last:
"arty from Wilmington asks:
Aaron, Of the current top 25, in your opinion, based on remaining schedule, who is most likely to fade down the stretch? Conversely, which team outside the top 25 do you see making a run at some point to join the poll? Thanks
A:
Aaron Fitt: Florida's schedule down the stretch is brutal: at Kentucky, Georgia, at South Carolina, at Alabama, Vanderbilt. If the Gators survive that, they will be a regional team for sure, but it's going to be tough. As for other teams, I expect Tulane to make a run to get back into the rankings."
"Q: Raymond Linares from Miami asks:
What do you think are Miami's cahnces to making it to the world series? Arw they the best team in the ACC?
A:
Aaron Fitt: I think the Hurricanes have a very good shot to get back to Omaha. For me, they are easily the best team in the ACC. UNC has more pitching depth, but Miami's frontline pitching has been more consistent, Miami's better defensively, and its lineup is much more dangerous. Florida State's pitching is suspect, in my mind."
It also seems most of our competition for the title will come from outside the ACC this year. Arizona State is loaded and Arizona was highly regarded but they are swooning (they lost tonight also). Missouri apparently has the best pitching in the country.
But overall, Miami was voted the #2 program since baseball switched to a 64 team tournament (behind Texas, though apparently Rice has since surpassed Miami and UT in this poll, making us #3)

I went to the game today, couple of things...
Kyle Bellamy is a stud. He's got some money pitches.
Looks like Swasey got this baseball team juiced up. 6 straight games w/10+ runs, that's a record.
football players in attendance: JMcKenzie(big fan of the survey), OFranklin, Kayne, Cook, R.Gordon, and Lamar Thomas. OFrank said to watch out for Gunn and that the center position isn't an issue.
