The Miami Hurricanes run in the 2008 NCAA basketball tournament was a sweet yet short one. Unfortunately, the Canes tourney experience was limited to "one and done".
After beating the Gaels of St. Mary's in the first round, the Canes fell to the Texas Longhorns in their second round game 75-72 today at the Alltel Arena in Little Rock, Arkansas.
The game was not as close as the final score sounds as again the Canes came out cold, started slowly and never really matched the Horns talent and tenacity.
Truth be told Texas dominated throughout and led the game by as many as 12 points with five minutes to go. Their eight point lead with 2 minutes left was cut into by two late three pointers by UM Senior Dwight Hicks.
Canes leading scorer Jack "McMoney" McClinton was short-changed with only 18 points against a tough Texas defense. The Jack Attack never got his momentum going and simply couldn't carry the load for the team on this day.
The Canes were exposed again for having too few scoring options, no dominant inside presence and no real point guard to control the game.
Still, Canes fans maintained their "Faith in Haith" until the very end of the game when Miami trailed by three and actually had a final possession with just under two seconds to go. But, the long inbounds pass was intercepted by Texas and that was that.
However, Haith and his team earned some major respect and some degree of redemption for even getting the team tournament eligible this year. Now he is hoping for BIG dividends when roundball recruiting season roles around.
Now that basketball season has dawn to a close, Canes fans will shift their focus to the absolutely dominant baseball team, who in case you haven't heard, is just beating the jorts (thanks to M.H.) off of their opponents.
Today the UM Diamond Dogs unleashed 23 runs on Wake Forest in the first of a two game doubleheader. That's right, it's not a typo, TWENTY THREE runs!
The Canes football team, now deep into Spring practice, would be happy to average that many points when the season starts in this Fall. Jim Morris has his team on an early roll and this team appears to be set for yet another trip the the CWS in Omaha. Now that sounds sweet!

Congratulations 'Canes ballers on a very exciting season. You made basketball noteworthy in South Florida this years.
This is a great foundation year for the team and for Haith.
Additionally, our old friend Omar needs a little credit for telling us all last year that this team was going to be exciting.
Omar, the prophet, you certainly delivered on that one.

Just looking over the basketball team roster because it is time to start thinking about next year already.
We lose:
Anthony King
Raymond Hicks
Jonathan Stratton
Fabio Nass
Landon Glover
One starter. One role player. Both giving some inside presence.
With McClinon (unless lured to pro ball), Dews, and Hurdle, we ahve some slashers.
We still need a solid point guard (look how good we were when Eddie Rios played well) and a shot blocker, post threat in the middle.
Cheers

From www.hurricanesports.com:
Series Notes
-Freshman lefty Chris Hernandez won his fourth game in game one of the doubleheader. He matched a career-high with eight strikeouts and one-hit the Demon Deacons through six innings.
-Miami finished with 10 home runs in the series despite hitting five in the first three innings of game three, which would have brought the total to 15. Juniors second baseman Jemile Weeks and right fielder Dennis Raben each hit two in the series. Junior first baseman Yonder Alonso and freshman designated hitter each homered twice in the first three innings of the series finale and junior center fielder Blake Tekotte hit a three-run home run, but all five do not count due to the game not being an official game.
- The Hurricanes tied a school record in game two of the series. The 23-2 win was the fifth straight game that Miami scored 10 or more runs. The last time a Miami team scored at least 10 runs in five consecutive games was the 1998 team (L, 14-10 to Florida; defeated Lynn, 18-3, defeated, Notre Dame, 18-3, defeated Notre Dame, 27-2, defeated Notre Dame, 17-3.
-The 40 runs scored was the second most in an Atlantic Coast Conference series by the Hurricanes. Miami scored 42 runs in a series win over North Carolina in 2005. UM won 17-7 and 18-9 before tying 7-7.
-Jemile Weeks and Blake Tekotte each collected four hits in the Wake Forest series. Weeks drove in a team-high six runs which included two home runs.
-Miami hit .352 on 25 hits in the series. UM had three doubles and 10 home runs. The Hurricanes walked 24 times in the series.
-UM's pitching staff posted a 2.50 team ERA in the series and Wake Forest hit just .172 in the series. The Demon Deacons finished with 11 total team hits and struck out 20 times.

Hats off to Haith and the boys for a great season; let's not forget where the "experts" were picking us to finish. Also, congrats to the boys of summer for rolling Wake this weekend. I'm still hyped for the scrimage this Saturday!
On another note, don't know if this has been posted before, but this shyt is funny!

GO CANES!
Posted by: Keoki | March 24, 2008 at 12:01 AM
For a team picked to finish last again in the conference, 2007-2008 goes down as an unqualified success for Haith's squad. They'll be better next year and they really aren't too far off from becoming a player year in and year out in one of the elite conferences in the nation. As an added treat UM hoops now stands for an up-tempo, exciting style of play that's a treat to watch as a fan. Plus, for every cloud there's a silver lining, or in this case, an orange and green one. Most definitely plus a billion for the upper left corner picture 86. Also, if you listen carefully, you can hear Deadeye, even now, zeroing in on his target for '09 already. He'll be coming back with a vengeance, the great ones always do.
