Today I attended the mass and funeral of my father in law, Rene Vazquez, who recently passed away. He was a classic old school guy: tough man, tough love and a tough competitor at any thing he choose to do.
He was an early riser and a hard worker who worked as a self employed renovation specialist in the construction industry. The man was a living 305 legend; known by name from Hialeah to Westchester, he could literally build anything out of nothing, and often did.
Another thing he was for sure was a hard core sports fan. And, above all else, he was a huge Marlins fan. Born in Cuba, he loved the hardball. When the franchise started he couldn't believe there would be professional baseball in Miami. Braves, Mets, Pirates, Dodgers, Cubs and Phillies in Miami? He was there!
Soon he grew to love his home town Marlins, the teal and black, the ball park, the fish tank, the experience of major league ball. And low and behold, they would win the World Series sooner than any expansion club in histotry.
What was this? The Marlins, World Champions? Too good to be true! You bet. Then they would top it off by winning again, with a completely different team a few years later. This was the equivalent of baseball heaven for a man who lived and died with every pitch.
To pass the time and ease the tension, we would sit at the Marlins games and bet one dollar on whether or not a particular batter would get a hit or not. His favorite player, Luis Castillo, played second base. I would never refer to him by name, instead I just call him: "El hombre de segundo base".
We'd bet Luis every time he came up to bat but the first bet we ever made was on an obscure Marlin you have never heard of: Mario Diaz. I lost the bet, but Mario Diaz would live on in infamy.
Rene Vazquez was a good man, a huge Marlins fan and great friend. And he was my friend, maybe the best one I ever had...

Monty Cane:
I always thought the Habs had a sophisticated crowd..all the games I used to watch on tv they'd show these classy looking lady ushers in nice skirts, and all the people around the lower glass / bench area had suits and ties on.
That You Tube clip was awesome. I'm embarrassed to ask, but I will...are they still in the Forum or have they moved to some fancier arena?
Great hockey barn: the Aud in Buffalo. Went to a game there once and we sat so high up I thought I was going to fall all the way straight down to the ice...pure vertical drop!
LaFontaine went coast to coast and Sabres won 1-0...good memories of being at a game with my older brother and father...
Posted by: AlpharettaCane | April 25, 2008 at 09:47 PM
I am not sad because he died.
He was old and ill and it was his time. He knew it and accpeted it gracefully.
I am sad because he is no longer here.
He was a good guy, a really good guy. He also loved football and The U because I took him to some games but he didn't bleed orange and green.
But when it came to the Marlins he did bleed teal and black, and in then end, when nothing else matters, is there really any difference?

86...
Sorry bo... but try to look at it as Gods will and it will be done... we don't know the grand plan... and certainly don't know what tomorrow brings us, soooo try to accept the given and smile at the past... remembering the good times, the looks, the little jesters, the wisdom that he stood for... accept the fact that he is gone but always remember that you will see him again... with that said, celebrate his passing and look forward to the reunion... to the next time you should meet!
BTJMO... To friends!!!

I also want to express to you my heartfelt sympathy. You know, you get to know and love family, and sometimes you may not always understand them or their life, or the journey they went through. But man, when they are not their anymore, it hurts. I am sure your wife feels tremendous pain, and this post can not replace her loss. But we bloggers care about you very much, and by extension her. We really are sorry.
You put alot of time into what you do. But you also sacrifice something in doing it. Time spent blogging is time you could spend elsewhere. It is why, as much as I love the Space, I try to spend more time with my family. So I post late at night, and yes, I could be more coherent if I posted at 8 pm sometimes. But life is truly special, and I would rather meet the Lord when the time comes feeling less satisfied as a blogger and more satisfied that I spend the quality time with my family.
I know you have it far more difficult than any of us. You have the obligation of being the main man with your family obligations. But if family need ever occur that demand your attention, please feel free to attend to them. We will cover your back while you are away. God Bless You! And your family.
