The feature was written exclusively for Canespace by blogger JC...
As the Canes embark on the “drive for five” to match the illustrious football program yet again in national titles, let’s take a look back at the season that was and take a peek at what’s ahead.
The season began fraught with uncertainty. To accommodate northern schools and promote equality in the sport, the NCAA decided to condense its baseball schedule and mandate a uniform start date to the season for all competing teams. The result was a compact gauntlet of games, featuring many midweek contests and sure to challenge teams and their pitching staffs like never before.
The Canes traditionally had a spread out schedule loaded with home games and few, if any, midweek games. Morris fretted about an academic falloff among all his players and subpar results on the field as pitching was thinned out. What he got was anything but. The Canes stormed out of the gate to a 27-2 record, beating rival Florida in a series for the first time since 2005. The red hot bats of Jemilee Weeks and Alonso Yonder (both batted over .400 for a long time to start the season) buoyed an overall dominant offense which averaged nearly 10 runs a game. A stunning six players from this lineup were named to the all-ACC team. The defense was also stellar.
On the mound, Morris stuck with the trio of ace Eric Erickson, Chris Hernandez, and Enrique Garcia and was rewarded with a 12-1 record in weekend series. Erickson and Hernandez both started 7-0 before Erickson went down with an injury. Hernandez quickly seized the role of ace and finished undefeated as a starter and won ACC Freshman of the Year. But even more of a pleasant surprise was the depth of the
pitching winning most of the midweek games and filling in for Erickson for more than a month. Special props to David Gutierrez, who also pitched the clincher in the ACC Championship game. Only two of the Canes’ eight losses came midweek.
Even though early on most Canes games were double digits blowouts, there were lots of memorable games. From a stirring comeback at FAU prior to the incredible series at Florida State to Chris Hernandez stunning 1-0 win over Virginia in a wonderful pitchers duel.
But getting the ACC monkey off their back was perhaps the biggest accomplishment of this team so far, clinching the regular season title with a 12-2 win against defending champ UNC and winning the tournament title going undefeated and again beating Virginia in the title game.
The Canes have spent much of this season at #1, and enter the postseason as the #1 national seed in the NCAA tournament. Such is their reward: one of the hardest regional draws in the nation, featuring Missouri and Ole Miss as well as annual patsy Bethune Cookman. Aaron Crow is arguably the best pitcher in the nation and is 12-0. Ole Miss made it to the SEC title game, has an amazing pitching staff, and had an underachieving season given its tremendous talent. ESPN picked them as a #3 seed likely to pull an Oregon St and get to the CWS.
Miami beat Ole Miss in Oxford in a 2005 super regional to advance to the CWS, so revenge may well be on the Rebel’s minds. The only good news is the Canes won’t have to face Crow twice, but make no mistake: there is some serious pitching in this regional. The Canes offense has their legacy at stake. Can they be shut down at home?
Should Miami advance out of their regional, their reward in the super regional? That would be preseason #1 or #2 (depending on who you ask) Arizona, OR unproven but talented Big 10 Champion Michigan. The other two teams in the Ann Arbor regional don’t scare anyone. That’s why they won’t advance. This is the hardest road to the CWS the Canes have faced in a long time. But hey, ESPN says we’re gonna win!
The real season begins now ladies and gents. Like Morris said, the ACC championship is nice, but for a program decorated like ours at the U, Omaha is all that we care about. Morris may have been wrong about the ACC tournament being more challenging than any regional, but let’s hope he’s right about everything else and gets one for the thumb. Go Canes! On to Omaha!
bam!

Nice link Jack on the White House visit. That must be a thrill.
A few comments.
1) 3 of 5 coaches have direct ties in one form or another to Miami (Go Canes!)
2) It's the White House, Coach Shannon, you should really have worn a necktie.
3) Charlie Weiss is so large, that even though he had on a suit, he is to big to button it.

Chris Hernandez should be the starter for the first game on friday...9 days after his last start...last wednesday against Clemson...

"Randy Shannon and President Bush..."
They must have a lot to talk about, what with the way they both conquered personal adversity through indomitable will and hard work.

The White House stacked all the Hurricanes together behind Bush then let Jabba the Hut blabber on incoherently at the photo op. What gives? Let Mr. Preseason #1 in the Nation speak instead of the Leprechaun's coach, George.
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | May 26, 2008 at 09:27 PM
Loco it's important to make sure you win this first game and you cannot rest your star pitcher for too long...9 days is long enough...But Morris will make the best decision, i am sure...
Peace!
Posted by: Montreal-Cane | May 26, 2008 at 09:32 PM
Monty I know, but I think its better if he throws a sim game or something tomorrow and then holds off til saturday, because Mizzou (or Ole Miss for that matter) are both much better opponents than BCC
Posted by: Loco | May 26, 2008 at 09:33 PM
And that's true... When in doubt, Morris knows best!
Posted by: Loco | May 26, 2008 at 09:33 PM
Larry Templeton NCAA commissioner chair div.1 for college baseball= A real joke
Why don't you have the same system as in basketball...You are not even rewarded for finishing no.1 in the nation...Ridiculous...But
like Alonso said bring in the best teams...we like it this way!
And like solar said earlier:
If we are as good as we seem, who cares who we eliminate first second or third?
Let's go Canes! It's us against the world!
Posted by: Montreal-Cane | May 26, 2008 at 09:37 PM
Loco taking into consideration the last month of the regular season and the ACC
tournament should Garcia be our no.2 pitcher
in the rotation or you still go with Erickson???
Posted by: Montreal-Cane | May 26, 2008 at 09:46 PM
In baseball, often times you always start your best pitcher in game 2 or 3, in this case, game 2 is when you start your best pitcher. You don't want to loose game 1 with your best pitcher, and than have to go into game 2 hoping the next best one can pull it off.
Besides, the thinking is real simple, if you win the 1st game with your 2nd best pitcher, the second game should be a lil easier to almost automatic as automatic can be in baseball.
As far as shannon goes, it would have been good if he was wearing a white suit withgreen and orange pin stripes.
Posted by: Calvin | May 26, 2008 at 09:57 PM
I think I would say Garcia... But I think Erickson should go out against BCC to get his bearings, maybe get some confidence back. Game 3 will be just as hard as game 2, so we'll need Garcia then I think...

Solar, by no means do I think the Canes can or should lose, and I resent the accusation of Cokerization. You can accuse me of being a communist or a satan worshiper, but good lord man, a Cokerist??
In all seriousness, I don't have a problem with a tough schedule. I like it when the football team has a tough schedule and I want them to play the best team available in the bowl game.
That being said, the idea of a seeded tournament is to reward regular season results. Since it was a committee and not a computer that did that, I feel the Canes got hosed. Proper respect was NOT given to their stellar regular season.
But come one come all, I think the Canes can and will beat every team in this country. Regardless, it's all amazing competition in Omaha, so a tough road should have them battle hardened by then.
Mizzou isn't so great beyond Crow, tho they were #4 for a long while. Ole Miss definitely underachieved. I don't think you can look at their past results as a gauge of the challenge they pose for the Canes. There's talent there.

JC,
thanks, I respect everything you share baseball wise.
I realize you delve into it a lot more than the common fan, me included.
LMAO the Cokerist wasn't aimed at you bro.
It was a general blanket observation about how all of us find some reason to be uneasy since the rise and fall of Turf Face and Jitters.
I still twitch when I type their nicks.
