The University of Miami baseball team entered the 2008 season with great hope, promise and potential. The Canes exceeded all expectations, spending most of the season ranked #1 in the nation before dropping the final series of the season at home against then #2 ranked UNC. The Canes success was fueled by dominant pitching, timely hitting and solid coaching by head man Jim Morris.
Miami won the ACC Coastal Division for the first time and now looks to control it's own destiny by winning the ACC Tournament in Jacksonville this week. The Canes first game is at 1 PM on Wednesday and they play again on Thursday at 5 PM. Canespace will have daily updates from Jacksonville on Wednesday and Thursday nights after each Miami game.
So stay tuned to The Space for baseball updates and the sites and sounds from the games. Here's a local joke/trivia question I heard today at a neighborhood sports bar. See if you know the answer:
Why is the St. Johns River one of only a few that flow North?

M.H...help me understand this:
Even if your not a huge baseball fan in general, but you are a Canes fan, how can you NOT watch, support and care about this team (this is not directed at you but some others at TOS)?
The Canes baseballerz have given us reason to cheer all year long, games are a blast and Mark Light is an awesome venue to catch a real up-close and exciting college baseball game in a great atmosphere! I love this stuff!!!

I been out of town for around four years, is "Young" Ron Brewer still above ground?

For a DL that is a bad injury. They use so much upper body strength in wrestling for position with the OL that it makes it tough. And easy to reinjure if not completely healed. Gotta be careful here.
Posted by: SOUP | May 20, 2008 at 08:57 PM
Solar...yes, Paul and Young Ron are still doing there thing on South Florida radio in the AM.

soup,
baseball isn't everyones cup of tea.
I personaly think it takes an hour or two too long, but I DO support the Canes.

Yeah, they are on Big 106 (105.9 FM) if you're in the southern half of south florida, and they recently took over the gater (98.7 FM) from Bob and Tom for the Northern half.

Im real depressed about this allen bailey injury. he was my guy to have a great year. Why was he doing fly's anyway? There is no strength increase from fly's, just definition. Hard to imagine he will be able to go full speed at all this year. Well someone needs to step up now, they just got a starting job

86..the younger guys, just aren't into baseball, as much...imo

Vince - Florida Southern is no doubt traditionally a powerhouse in baseball. I know all about them b/c they're our biggest rivals and hate them with a passion .. they're on par with as much as I hate Oklahoma, the Crocs and the Yankees.
Florida Southern has won the title 9 times ('71, '72, '75, '78, '81, '85, '88, '95, '05) and has been in the Title game 13 times .. the last time before 2005 was in '95. They dominated the 1970's no doubt just like the USC Trojans did in baseball, but after that - not so much. The 9 titles are damn impressive, they've won back to back titles once ... University of Tampa has done it twice, is the only team to do it twice and is going for history by trying for a 3 peat. Florida Southern isn't even in the tournament this year.
Those assclowns were founded in 1883 and University of Tampa in 1933 ... UT has done well in the 75 years as opposed to the 125 Florida Southern has been around.
Some Florida Southern guys: Brett Tomko, Lance Niekro, Carlos Reyes, John Hudek and Rob Dibble (he went there for about 15 minutes - kind of like how Mike Piazza went to Miami).
Some University of Tampa guys: Six (that's right), Lou Piniella, Tino Martinez, Ozzie Timmons, John Matuszak, Freddie Solomon
Gotta get back to the FHSAA game

They may not give strength to your pecs, but they give strength to all of the stablizing muscles around them. They are very important to prevent injuries. Like anything else though, they can cause them as well

I think that young people do not like baseball because it is slow and too many games.(MLB) But college baseball is a blast! I was a batgirl in High School and dated a center fielder who played at Miami-Dade south for 4yrs (he played their 2yrs) so I am a bit partial!
Go Canes!!

Loco, email me at cavvaleer@gmail.com
Seriously. I'll explain. It's about Bailey's injury.
Posted by: Cavaleer | May 20, 2008 at 10:04 PM
Canestruck, Loco's right. Fly's use a lot of secondary muscles that help stabilize and strengthen the big ones.
Posted by: Cavaleer | May 20, 2008 at 10:05 PM
Bailey and the Florida game
This sucks a big one and even if he can play, he'll be at 80% of what he was before the injury and that's providing he doesn't reinjured it.... Maybe it's better to let him heel and bring him in for the 5th game against FSU and the heavy part of the season remaining.
The bottom line... Our other guys will just have to man-up and kick ass... but it's an Interesting thought to bring up M.Robinson or even J.Calhoun 6/3,250... Hummmmmm... until Bailey heels... interesting?

Pweeww, just got power back!
We had a tornado roll threw this area and take out alot of power lines and do alot of damage. Just turned on the Weather Channel and watched some Weather Channel guy, Jim Cantore, who is live from right down the street from me.

Loco, you have mail.

Flies are a great way to stretch out your chest at the end of workout and yes they can build size to your chest. A torn pec is not the end of the world anymore. My friend tore his and within 3 months he was back lifting heavy weights. Plus, if any of the freshmen being a standout end, I think it could be Benjamin Jones. I have seen him in person and he looks more like a DE right now than a tackle. Narrow frame and lean.
Posted by: FLCanes04 | May 20, 2008 at 11:03 PM
Caniac, the weight used on flys is usually small compared to what you use for straight bench presses.
However, he may have been doing compund sets or doing some ridiculous number of repetitions. Or he could have simply overworked the muscles over the last few days.
With super-strong 18 year olds it's difficult to tell them enough is enough. They usually don't learn until they have an injury.
Hopefully this injury will show everyone else to listen to your muscles when they say they've had enough.
The key to weightlifting is recovery, NOT stimulus. That's the mistake a lot of young lifters make.
I didn't seriously understand it until I was 32 or so. When I started lifting less often and eat better, I started growing like a weed. Now it's to the point where I only lift once a week because I grow too fast and I'm tiring of not fitting my clothes. lol

Soup and Cav... U have mail
Posted by: Cat5 Cane | May 20, 2008 at 11:07 PM
I disagree Cav. Tearing a pec is usually the result of heavy weights and growing to quickly. It is not uncommon for someone as strong as him to be doing 80 or 100 lbs flyes.
