The University of Miami Baseball team will head into Friday's first game of the Super Regional at Mark Light Stadium against the Arizona Wildcats with momentum and a rowdy home crowd on their side. After sweeping through the ACC tourney in Jacksonville and the Regional tournament last weekend at The Light, the Canes are feeling Super again.
All week long the Canez hardballers have been feeling a little like a mix between James Brown and Joe Cocker. The Canes have been heard in their dugout during practice alternating belting out "I feel good" and "Feelin' Alright" as they get ready to get past the next hurdle between them and Rosenblatt Stadium. The Canes have their sights set on a 2008 CWS ring to match the five rings won by their big brother that gets all the attention: the UM football team. But the rounders will have to take care of business in Coral Gables before they make their reservations for Omaha.
The first two games will be televised on ESPN (game 3 if required will be on The Duece) and Canespace will be blogging the action LIVE from The Light on Friday and Saturday nights. Games times are 7PM on Friday and 7:30 pm on Saturday. Canespacers OcalaCane and myself (86Cane) will be on hand for all the action before, during and after the games.
During the game we will be in "Canespace Corner" (top of the main stands, last row, in the corner, third base side). Before and immediately after the game we will be hosting Canespace parties at The Titanic on Ponce De Leon 1/2 block west of the Stadium. Pre-game action will run from 4:30 to 6:00 PM each day and we will be there after the game for our standard post game victory celebrations and LIVE music.
Look for us and the Canespace banner and signs and we will look for you at The Ti and at The Light!

Hey Cav,
"That 2005 defense was the same bloody defense that melted down against LSU. To me that proves the point about how much difference the HC makes."
Leading up to the Peach Bowl, it was the staff as a whole that did the melt down. Don't put that game on the players.
Or the defense.
It was truly the month that began the end of Cokers days. At that time I can tell you without question, his assistants quit on HIM. Not the team, but him. But that's the thing...if you quit on the head guy, what do you think your players are going to do?
The way they (the assistants) were acting all season was completely detrimental to the team. You have a job. You have a responsibility. And in this case, its to those 18-22 year old's that you promised the parents of that you would do what it took to make them quality men.
Well, how do make a quality man when you aren't even being a quality man yourself?
You ALL have had a boss that you just knew was a turd. But, you still had to do your job. Its you responibility. You don't get to undermine him or outwardly challenge him in front of the staff...if you do, you get fired. And you deserve it.
Well, those dudes, whether they are your favorite coaches or Canes or whatever, deserved the ax they got. They all preached "team" and yet they couldn't even keep it together as a staff and they let down an entire fanbase, and more improtantly a group of kids they brought into coach.
It wasn't all of them , obviously, but there were a couple there (I'm sure you can guess) that, at the time, along with their disdain for the HC forgot how to coach their own position. And it played oout on the recruiting trail too. It was ugly.
The result: 40-3 to a very talented and underrated LSU team that was ready to play against a Miami team that was LOST because there was zero leadership at the time.
Its just one game, so who cares, but it really did show us all the writing on the wall: Miami was falling and falling HARD. It starts with the coaches as leaders then trickles down from there: recruiting, coaching, mentoring, etc...that group of coaches just weren't getting it done.
And one more thing... I am not defending anyone. I KNOW cocker was too soft, too stubborn and NOT the right guy for the job at Miami. He was just so gosh darn happy to be there. BUT, he was the guy the University picked to be the face of the program. The lack of repect he got from the players started with the position coaches they were led by.
And last season was truly the culmination of events that started somewhere in the middle of the 2003 season over players Coker liked VS what the position coach (read: RB coach) didn't want as apart of the team.
Miami, boys and girls, still has a WAYS to go. Not because of coaching or recruiting this time, but because of mentality and talent. There are still some of those players out there that ARE "cokerized," and they can't play.
Coaching IS overrated, however the intangible of coaching that makes them the most important people on a football team (outside of the QB) is leadership. Those teams under coker had none and that wasn't all coker's fault. He had a lot of help losing his players and that's just dispicable coming from guys that supposedly bled orange and green. Good coaching leadership creats great on field leaders...who was a real leader on those Miami teams after Reid left?
The good news is, Randy doesn't have those issues. He is repected by his coaches and the players. He doesn't need to be a great coach as long as he has great players (think: Butch Davis). He's getting great players and Miami will be fine.
Anyway, that Peach Bowl was a dissaster. I can't lay that on the kids. Yes, they laid down but their leaders, the coaches, laid down forst. They Failed those kids and that is just unacceptable.
Of course, this is ALL my opinion! So what do I know...
Posted by: The Truth | June 06, 2008 at 09:14 AM
By the way, I think Randy is a great coach...I know some of you dissagree, but the man knows his sh*t...you'll see.

Oh, and Randy was ALWAYS the proffesional...he did his job no matter what. He never quit on his coach.
Posted by: The Truth | June 06, 2008 at 09:20 AM
Truth the lack of respect made me sick! Regardless Coker was not a good fit but he never demeaned those kids, never was disrespectful to them but in that louisville game(I think it was that one not sure), when Coker grabbed LLeggett and he turned away, I was disgusted with the behavior of lance and knew that that team was gone. One thing I have taught my children respect one another no matter what and sometimes this means YOU have to be the bigger person.
I think Shannon has a knack for weeding out LLeggett's from the team!!
GO CANES!!!!

good post Truth. I always bring up the RB issue. I remember it was just a little blurb in the story about the canes practice that day, but definitely was what stuck in my head. Wasn't a good sign of things to come.
Posted by: Esteban | June 06, 2008 at 09:25 AM
Este,
that little blurb in the paper was a HUGE factor in a lot of everything...
Posted by: The Truth | June 06, 2008 at 09:28 AM
Where does that RB play these days???
LOL
Not saying guys were right or wrong or whatever...just saying, you have a job, you do it. Period.

canechic,
Me too. It was bad and look at the players that were leading the charge of disrespect...well, I use players, VERY loosly....
Posted by: The Truth | June 06, 2008 at 09:31 AM
Truth, I think you mistook my post.
I laid Peach Bowl melt-down COMPLETELY ON MEDIOKER.
The VT game showed us what THE PLAYERS could do when properly motivated, prepared and focused.
But that's the HC's responsibility, first, middle and last.
After that VT game Coker said, and I quote almost verbatim because I'll never forget the idiocy,
"WE COULD NEVER EXPECT THESE KIDS TO PLAY AT THAT LEVEL WEEK IN AND WEEK OUT......"
That's why we slacked off against Wake the next week, and totally blew it on offense against GT the week after.
Then they limped out against UVA. LSU was simply the first real convincing indication that the players thought nothing of Coker, even though they liked him, and that he was in way over his head.
The disgraces of 2006 just confirmed everything.

Esteban that was an awesome read. I will be sending that article to many of my friends. Thanks!

Cav understand but leaders emerge even with bad leadership and those players gave up and that is a sign of weakness on their part.
Posted by: canechic | June 06, 2008 at 09:48 AM
Canechic, the kids didn't respect Medioker because he never earned their respect. He was exactly like so many American parents who don't want to say "NO" to their children because they don't want to hurt their child's feelings, or who want to "give" their child everything they didn't have.....
After a few years of that the kid is worthless, rotten.
Sun Tzu warned of this 2500 years ago in The Art of War.
"If the General is generous yet unable to lead.
If he is loving yet unable to give orders.
If he is chaotic and unable to bring order. His soldiers are like spoiled children. They cannot be deployed."

Truth - nice post. It all has a trickle down effect.
Canechic "leaders emerge even with bad leadership"??? Lost me there. Imagine a military unit without a solid commanding officer....
Posted by: CanesgirlNC | June 06, 2008 at 09:54 AM
Canechic, true, but when a 3rd year player crumbles like that, he's just reflecting what he's been taught, what's been expected of him, how he's been developed, molded and disciplined, just like children.
Other than the fact that a lot of those players on offense were never True U, I don't blame them for much.
Medioker did not have single player on offense IMPROVE over their time under his care. In fact, they all regressed, in one way or another.
That says it all.
Darnell Jenkins OTOH, flourished under one year of Shannon.
The verdict is still out on the remaining Cokerites, like Shields. He really has no excuse now, with the QBs, the position coach and Shannon in charge of the whole team.
Posted by: Cavaleer | June 06, 2008 at 09:57 AM
Este - good read. And Truth he was so "gosh darn happy to be there" - now THAT is funny!
Posted by: CanesgirlNC | June 06, 2008 at 10:02 AM
Esteban, that cat has a pair. lol
But I don't think he knows that the root of all this is well-constructed, consciously orchestrated fear and paranoia.
Or that there was no "white" or "black" when his people were scapegoated for anything and everything driven out of European countries or burned at the stake.
That's why "race" is so comically absurd. The second you step back a few hundred years it doesn't exist.
Then suddenly it does exist and so much is made of it. Just comically stupid.
I'll send you a mail on this.
Posted by: Cavaleer | June 06, 2008 at 10:07 AM
I'm going to go out on a limb here and talk about coaching, something of which I know nothing about. However, I will also use an example that sends those bad vibes...
Lou Holtz. Coaching intangibles, as mentioned by The Truth, is the most important thing. Miami beat Notre Dame 58-7 the year before Lou Holtz got there. 3 years later they closed the gap and unfairly beat us in 1988, winning the national championship, and then beat us again in 1990 - after we kicked their teeth in 1989, still to me the most dominating performance we've ever had against a number one team - because we thought it was a good idea to kick it to rocket. Holtz made players good. That is the key. Shannon needs to make players good. Jim "Penguin Pedofile" Tressel is another example. What was OSU's record against michigan before PP? And now what is it? UF and Oscar Meyer Weiner - what is their home record since he's been there? Belief in coaching is so important. It's not like Bobby Bowden called better plays than a lot of his opposing coaches to win 300 plus games...he just had more good players believe in him to sign at FSU, and then win.

Leadership is an intagible quality in some people. Some have to learn leadership and how to be a leader, and other just have it, they naturally move to the fore-front. they are the Randy Shannons who are drafted to coach. When leadership goes bad at the top, leaders will emerge and take over, leading the team simply because they have a need to fill the void of leadership. Not every leader has that quality, only those that are "natural-born leaders" do

And we can't say they haven't seen a lineup like ours yet, bc Arizona State has some serious power too.

Reggie Bush's Lawyers Want Case Moved to Arbitration
Depositions in a lawsuit brought by Reggie Bush's would-be agent have been postponed until after Aug. 1, while a judge considers Bush's motion to move the case to arbitration, according to media reports.
Lloyd Lake, who had sought to represent Bush as his agent, is suing the New Orleans Saints running back for about $300,000 in cash and goods he claims to have given the 2005 Heisman Trophy winner. He has alleged that Bush and his family accepted improper benefits while still a student at USC, and he has provided information about the allegations to the NCAA, which is investigating. Bush has denied the allegations.
Lake had sought to represent Bush as an agent when he turned pro, and Lake and another man, Michael Michaels, said they were partners in a start-up sports marketing company along with Bush's stepfather, LaMar Griffin.
Michaels, who has previously said Bush's parents lived in a home he owned without paying rent while Bush was a student at USC, settled with Bush last year. His settlement includes an agreement not to talk about the case and a payment of about $300,000, according to reports.
Bush's motion asserts that the settlement with Michaels also covers his partner Lake, and that the case should be handled in confidential arbitration, rather than in a lawsuit.
"Ultimately, our position is there are no claims now" if the case goes to arbitration, Bush's attorney, David Cornwell, said, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
But Lake's attorneys said they suspect Bush's side is pushing for private arbitration in order to prevent Michaels from corroborating Lake's claims in testimony -- and to keep the NCAA from obtaining that information in its investigation. If the NCAA finds Bush received improper benefits, USC could face sanctions, including forfeits of wins in which Bush played, and Bush could be stripped of his Heisman.
"It's frivolous," Lake's attorney, Brian Watkins, said of the motion, according to the Los Angeles Times. "It's just another delay tactic."
Bush's attorneys filed a copy of the settlement with Michaels in court on Wednesday, but financial details in the court copy are redacted, according to the Union-Tribune.
Michaels was to have been deposed in the case on Monday.
