Loco...exactly! We need Erickson to come up BIG in game 2 if the Canes are going to stay in the winners bracket. Canes bats will be key in that game. Kiki has been solid also as the #3 guy.

Which would illicit the response: Don' worry gurl, ain't no thang. we all cane bredren

(my apologies if i've offended anybody) :-)

SOUP

Canechic...I will ask Brian Folery that question tonight or U can if you are going to be on the blog?

Cane Since 1982

Me,

Thank you. I saw all fo that stupid Sh@t against 86 the first time it was written and replied back to the idiot that posted it using some choice words for him.

86,

Its your blog its up to you in the end, but I dont think MH ment any harm by copy pasting that line of comments to the SS. They say much worse about you over there anyway. From what I gather I think MH was sticking up for you. I think you may have made an enemy out of a comrad. I know it probably doesnt mean much but I would like to see MH come back.

JC

It's not really a blog war if one person's angst is causing it all. That's a vendetta.

If he was serious about affecting change, he'd state a complaint then lead by example. But based on the strategy you may be dealing with an adolescent, so there might be little hope of that.

At any rate, Hernandez shut down UNC and FSU so on one hand I almost want Morris to save him, but that both assumes FSU will beat Stanford and that UGA isn't a real threat. But UGA is mashing right now, especially early in games, and Morris is right, you need to get off to a good start in Omaha.

Besides, if the Canes did start 2-0, I think their third game would be on Friday, so hypothetically Hernandez would be available again to get the Canes into the title series.

But 2-0 is no guarantee. Rice has started 2-0 in each of the past two years (in 2006 at the expense of the Canes) and never made it to the title series.

SOUP

1982...I am not going to discuss the issue here on the blog. Thanks for your input. Due to your comments and others on and off the blog I am re-considering my position.

Now back to Hurricane sports...

Loco

JC, also, if we do go 2-0, we will likely play FSU again, and need Hernandez sharp. I don't know too much about the other teams in our bracket, but I honestly believe that us, FSU, and UNC are the 3 best teams in the country, and that any one of us could win the title (though it WILL be us!)

JC

Canechic, no one in the CWS has pitching as good as Arizona's from starter to bullpen. UNC probably has better #1 and #2 starters than Arizona. But as Carlos has pointed out, we stick their #1 for a lot of runs. Their #2 did a good job against us though. Their bullpen isn't amazing like Arizona tho, just pretty good.

Cane Since 1982

86

understandable and im done with it as well. Just had to throw my 2 cents in.

Loco

Unfortunately the pitching for UGA is not the problem. They are probably the hottest-hitting team right now. THAT is a problem. Hernandez needs to be on top of his game, as does the defense and our hitters

JC

86, if the Canes go 2-0, I don't expect Kiki to pitch this week. But you are right, we need Erickson to be in top form, either against FSU or Stanford.

But Kiki does make me feel confident that if the Canes lose their second game, they can win the 1-1 game and then have Hernandez and Erickson ready again to try to win 2 straight against either FSU or Stanford.

The 3 deep starters and space of this tournament makes me feel good that the Canes can suffer a loss in their bracket and still advance.

The problem with pitching Hernandez next Friday though would be he'd be available only for Game 2 of the title series, and even then only on 3 days rest. You'd effectively be going Erickson then Garcia then Hernandez is a Game 3 was necessary.

But like I said, I'll take those odds.

And they also have David Gutierrez as a good #4 starter but the spacing of the days means he'd be available out of the bullpen. A real asset. He was ready to come in against Arizona until Erickson settled down.

Mephistopheles

Meffy's a little jet lagged, but we made it back from the boot-shaped insane asylum, and I'm ready for Series. Travelling overseas always helps me to appreciate how lucky we are to live in America, not to mention Florida.

Anyhow, off we go to Mark Light II, and is this team ever battle tested? These Canes have faced fierce pitching during the three post-season weekends-there is no better way to prepare for the CWS. Nothing has come easy to this team for a month, and its fixin' to get tougher. Some other teams will wilt under the pressure. UM may not win it all, but they will be tougher to kill than Rambo.

Its easy to think that this group was destined for the CWS, but they had arguably the toughest road to Omaha of anyone, and the act of making this tourney is already quite an accomplishment. Hopefully they will be rewarded with #5.

Beside our games, I'm really looking forward to the UNC/LSU matchup. That should be a whale of a game.

Quietly, Enrique Garcia has made 3 very nice postseason starts. (at least 7 innings and only 2 runs allowed per game) Obviously, we need Erickson to pitch well, but if Garcia keeps this up, he may be the x-factor for the Canes to actually win it all.

JC-I agree that Posey probably deserved the award, but he had more than 50 more AB's than Alonso. If you extrapolate the numbers for Alonso to add the additional AB's, he'd have 30 HR's and 90 RBI and would run away with the award.

I also agree with your analysis about defense. I've watched this series since around 1980, and defense (just like in football) is critical every year. I watched the super-regional games on DVR, and we do not advance but for great defense late in those games.

In case the players or coaches read the Space, let me thank them now for another great season no matter what happens.

GO CANES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

cubancane

I never post much on any blog but i do read them. 86, i know its none of my business but i do think you should reconsider your position on MH.

Loco

Posted by: JC | June 13, 2008 at 02:44 PM

That's a good point, I hadn't thought about that. But you can't just save Hernandez, because if you lose then you HAVE to pitch him, and you lose him for sure for the final series

JC

Loco, you can't assume anything in Omaha. Stanford has been there before too, at least their coach has. And UNC has LSU, who is also clearly hot, to deal with. Rice has some great pitchers too. All those teams are lucky ASU choked against Fresno, otherwise they'd wear each other out before the title series. But I like the UNC/LSU winner to advance to the title series.

Our side the bracket has hotter hitting teams (aside from missing LSU) so if our pitching does come through, that'll be huge.

86, just like I think it's best for blogs to ignore one another, I don't think anyone should offer to or be asked to liason btw two blog communities. Two wrongs don't make a right, so I'd also recommend just letting that other situation slide.

Loco

Sorry about the triple post guys

Cane Since 1982

I thought the triple post had something to do with the 3 lefts.

reggaebob

yes yes we get that three lefts make a right...

JC

Haha yeah they do Loco, but unless you do them all at once (then it's more like a left and a U turn) then you are farther behind where you started.

Baseball America's tidbits on each CWS team. Interesting note on UM offense, tho I think the Canes have faced some nasty pitching:

"No. 1 MIAMI

Season In A Nutshell: Miami won the ACC's regular-season and tournament titles and has spent more time at No. 1 in the rankings than any other team in 2008.

Who's Hot: Just one Miami regular is batting over .300 in the postseason (Jemile Weeks at .304), but outfielder Adan Severino has made the most of his limited playing time, going 4-for-10 in six games (just one start). Righthander Kyle Bellamy has been stellar in the bullpen, going 1-0, 2.16 with 14 strikeouts and three walks in eight innings over all six Miami postseason games.

HURRICANES IN
THE DRAFT
Rd. Player, Pos. Team
1 Yonder Alonso, 1b Reds
1 Jemile Weeks, 2b Athletics
1 Carlos Gutierrez, rhp Twins
2 Dennis Raben, of Mariners
3 Blake Tekotte, of Padres
4 Mark Sobolewski, 3b Blue Jays
24 Enrique Garcia, rhp Reds
26 Adam Severino, of Twins

Who's Not: The Hurricanes are batting just .258 as a team in the postseason, and junior outfielder Dennis Raben has struggled the most, batting .162. Still, all four of Raben's hits have gone for extra bases: two doubles and two homers.

Stat That Matters: Miami has premium defenders up the middle in center fielder Blake Tekotte, shortstop Ryan Jackson, second baseman Jemile Weeks and catcher Yasmani Grandal, and the team's .975 fielding percentage in 2008 leads all CWS teams.

Stat That Doesn't: Just six Miami pitchers have seen action in six postseason games. If all goes as planned, six is all the Hurricanes will need.

X-factor: Miami lacks pitching depth, so it needs sophomore lefthander Eric Erickson to pitch like he did in regionals against Mississippi (7 IP, 6 H, 2 ER), and not like he did in super-regionals against Arizona (3.1 IP, 5 H, 7 R, 3 ER).

Made-For-TV Story: Outfielder Dave DiNatale transferred from Central Florida as a sophomore last year but struggled through a deep bone bruise on his hand after being hit by a pitch early in the season. He got healthy in the summer but was hit by another pitch in the Cape Cod League—this time in the face, breaking eight bones. He has emerged as one of Miami's best clutch hitters as a junior this spring.

Winnability: 65 (graded on the 20-to-80 scouting scale). No team is stronger in every facet of the game than Miami, but if the Hurricanes fall into the loser's bracket they could be in serious trouble.
"

UNC tied the Canes on their "winnability" scale. After that, it's FSU, Rice, LSU, UGA, Stanford, and Fresno bringing up the rear.

JC why do they have stanford so low on their winnability scale? i really think they are a team that can surprise, and i didnt see any stats that jumped out at me, but they seem to be well rounded as a team.

Ray Chan - I never heard back from the alumni group - where did you wind up watching the game?

Loco

Some people never learn, do they CG?

reggaebob

anytime i read a headline saying marcus vick was arrested again, i cant help but think why a guy who had it all going for him let his emotions and attitude get the better of him. aside from one particular game on the 5th of november, 2005, that kid has a bright future as a qb. but i guess as loco says, some people never learn. (or forget 8/22, 2 INT, 6 sack, 4 fumbles. i didnt forget that.)

If only you were 10 again, you'd be watching a Bill Nye video. Or maybe school-house rock.

CGNC

Thanks for the link to all of the computer games. Although I cnt find that helicopter game anymore.

Cane Since 1982

R-Kelly was acquitted on all 7 counts of child porn. We put vick in jail for hurting dogs but let R-Kelly out for pissing on little girls. I dont know if im the confused individual or if it is them but i am not on the same wave length as our justice system.

CaneSawMassacre

Rkelley already paid that little girl a lot of money awhile back to shut her mouth. What could the police do? She said it wasn't her on the video, Rkelly said it wasn't him. The DA's star witness was a stripper who said she had engaged in a three way with the duo at or during the time the video was made. It is the SAD state of our judicial system. Where some money and a lawyer buys you better rights than those less fortunate.

CanesgirlNC

Loco - no, they don't. For some reason I enjoy when Marcus Vick gets arrested....

CS82 - no more helicopter game??? Will have to find something else - how are you douing with the cow tipping game I put on there? I always step in cow *ish!!!!

canechic

Yeah that whole RKelly story is sad! I agree some of our priorities are way out of whack!!

Loco if only I could watch Bill Nye I would probably understand this better. I have the 80's porn guy as my commentator and it is really bad!!! I can't keep straight which rock belongs to what!!!!! AHHHHHHH!!! I have a high "B" in this class and I have absolutely no idea HOW!!!

Yes canesgirlnc Marcus needs some kind of punishment. I think his big brother spoiled him and wanted to give him a better life but just became a brat. When he stepped on that player in the louisville game? He got too big for his britches and now he has to be brought back down to earth and is doing it all on his own accord. Pretty sad!

canechic

LOCO YES that is just how I feel, I pity geologist what a friggin horrible job????
