The Miami Hurricanes beat the Arizona Wildcats 4-2 in another nail-biter of a game to advance to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. The NCAA college baseball championship runs June 14-25 at Rosenblatt Stadium. The Canes will face Georgia in their first game next weekend.
Some quick facts from the Super Regional (from www.hurricanesports.com):
CORAL GABLES SUPER REGIONAL | GAME 3: No. 1 MIAMI 4, No. 12 ARIZONA 2
SUNDAY, JUNE 8, 2008 | NOTES
Winning the Coral Gables Super Regional series 2-1 over Arizona, Miami is advancing to the College World Series for the 23rd time in its storied history.
Both teams won the last Super Regional they competed in, with the Hurricanes advancing to Omaha after defeating Ole Miss in three games on the road in 2006 and the Wildcats advancing after downing Long Beach State in three games on the road in 2004.
Miami is the 2008 Coral Gables Regional champion and is now 5-1 in 2008 postseason play, while Arizona – the 2008 Ann Arbor Regional champions – closes its postseason with a 4-2 record.
Miami leads the all-time series versus Arizona, 6-3.
(1) MIAMI (52-9)
Miami has never lost a Super Regional in Coral Gables, winning five Super Regional titles at home in 1999, 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2008.
The Hurricanes have advanced to the College World Series in 11 of 15 seasons under head coach Jim Morris.
Miami is now 10-1 in Super Regional games in Coral Gables, 14-8 overall in the Super Regional and 170-77 in the postseason.
Yonder Alonso’s two-run home run in the first inning was his team-leading 23rd of the season and marked the 100th homer for Miami this season. His 23 home runs this season ties for second-most in a season with Pat Burrell (1996).
Miami has hit 100 home runs this season – third most in school history — and has at least one home run in 20 of its last 22 games. The Hurricanes last hit 100 homers in a season in 1999 (104).
LHP Chris Hernandez (11-0), a 2008 All-American, Collegiate Baseball Freshman Pitcher of the Year and the first freshman finalist for the Clemens Award, made his first relief appearance tonight, coming in for the Hurricanes with two on and two outs in the seventh inning.
Jemile Weeks’ RBI double in the first inning was his 17th of the year (extending his team-long hitting streak to five games), while Mark Sobolewski added his 16th double of the year in the eighth inning and Jason Hagerty hit his eighth double of the year in the ninth, as the Hurricanes have recorded 14 doubles in the postseason – including eight in the Super Regional series.
Working 6.0 innings tonight and picking up the win, RHP Enrique Garcia (7-2) has gone at least five innings in eight of his last nine starts and has allowed three runs or less in nine of 15 starts this season.
Dave DiNatale stole his 12th base of the year in the seventh inning, moving Miami to 7-7 in stolen bases during the postseason.

Interesting number assignment Regis a DT gets a LB number and Marti a LB gets a DT number
54 Micanor Regis, DT
95 Brandon Marti, LB

Tough to close out those teams on the road in the Supers. Makes what Miami did at Ole Miss in 2006 that much more impressive.
Poor Irvine really blew it against LSU. And Fresno sure made it look tough in the 9th against ASU. I'm shocked ASU went down. Misery in Arizona!

After hearing about Luqman leaving I looked up the 2005 class. Here are the players from that class:
Kenny Phillips 5 star
DajLeon Farr 5 star
Reggie Youngblood 5 star
Spencer Adkins
Richard Gordon
Randy Phillips
Bruce Johnson
Antonio Dixon
Courtney Harris
A.J. Trump
Chris Barney
Jerrell Mabry
Luqman Abdallah
Ricky Hope
Eric Houston
Matt Pipho
Darryl Sharpton
Demetri Stewart
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
Just one playmaker from the entire class? Just KP???!!!!
There are a few starters and part time starters. This class should have been the strength of the program right now as they enter their senior or redshirt Jr year, instead it's like we lost an entire class.
Unbelievable how all but one guy (KP) were disappointments. It's true they still have 1 more year to prove themselves and I hope they do but I remember thinking the same thing about Lance "DUCK!" Leggett last year.
There is nowhere to go but up after this class leaves.

Which recruiting class was worse 2005 or 2004!
Posted by: Calvin | June 10, 2008 at 12:13 AM
Great question Calvin!
That's like asking if you'd rather F%$# Roseanne Barr or Bea Arthur!
I wanna say 2005 but I think 2004 had more high profile failures like LL and the new back-up QB at Baylor. It's such a hard decision...
It's like we're playing with half a team right now.

The Canes were 52-9 this year... wasn't that Jimmy Johnson's record as coach of the U?

And how about Fresno State knocking ASU out of the tourney? Who woulda thunk it?
Arizona is 0-2 in the tourney!
Posted by: SOUP | June 10, 2008 at 12:56 AM
Fresno State has taken on the Ewing theory where you are without your best player and continue to win. I really like what they have done being a four seed and going to ASU and getting smoked in Game 1 and then coming back to win the final two games.

Alonso on returning to Omaha: "A lot of work goes through it, in the fall and the summer. All you think about is Omaha. Once you get there it's nice but now we need to take care of business. It's not just a vacation over there."
No offense Mitch, but... who would go to Omaha for a vacation?? lol

By the way, Mike and Mike were discussing who gets into the hall of fame this year now that strahan has retired and there are 6 HOF eligible players 5 years from now but only 5 can get in, and they were discussing Sapp, and how he was possibly the best defensive tackle during his time. Then Golic, who played in philly for a while said "Sapp is a great guy, he reminds me a lot of Jerome Brown".. And in comparison to find somebody who might even be close to as good as Sapp they said "well Cortez Kennedy made a lot of pro bowls"... All they mentioned were Canes baby!

Hey, I just checked out the new pics you put up... I LOVE that elephant man! ICE COLD BEER!!! He was my hero at the OB. :)
Posted by: KLCaneFan | June 10, 2008 at 10:17 AM
Loco, that's classic.
CVS, I like the attitude of Byrd and Lewis if they consciously chose those numbers, which I believe they did, especially Byrd. It's a good sign. Confidence and hunger.
Cal and SF, I'd say 2004 was worse because the '05 class still has a year to prove itself. Dix, Sharpton, Randy Phillips and Bruce Johnson should all excel this year. I expect one of them to sneak into the 1st, probably Johnson. Gordon should step up as well. Moncur will be the lone baller from the '04 class. Amazing.
SF, Oscar Meyer has lost a ton of players for different reasons since he's been there. That's why their defense is so "young", and why their depth is thin. T-Bone and Harvin really carried the whole damm team, except for a few standouts on defense.
Now don't get me wrong. I'm not saying Oscar recruited Cokerites. He may be sleazy but he's not an idiot, incompetent. lol

Can someone compile a list of canes that has transferred in the past two years?
Posted by: O-L Cane | June 10, 2008 at 10:37 AM
Anyone got any nuggets of info from the offensive depth chart at insidetheu?
What did the defensive one say? Did I miss it or just forget about talking about it?

Neither DZ8. That stuff can wait a couple weeks til after Omaha!! lol
Posted by: Loco | June 10, 2008 at 11:50 AM
the depth charts are no surprise. Marve is 1st. Jacory close second. Shannon first at center. JoJo first at FS. Harris second at CB.
Posted by: miamimike01 | June 10, 2008 at 11:58 AM
JoJo first at FS IS a bit of a surprise. Esp with Phillips, Reddick AND Ponder all up there
Posted by: Loco | June 10, 2008 at 12:06 PM
I would go on vacation to Omaha if it got me financial advice from Warren Buffet.
Posted by: Old Skool | June 10, 2008 at 12:30 PM
After Omaha eh Loco?
JoJo is a surprise. Whats up with Harland Gunn or Tyler Horn. I dont mind Shannon starting, it is a great story, but I want to see some young studs on the O line.
We are weak at tackles next year especially if Fox leaves.

There's plenty to do in Omaha if you like animal husbandry ... or wifery depending on your inclination.

Yes. Finally evidence I really am working and not just standing in line for milkshakes at the Light! Thanks for the photo 86. For those of you who haven't seen it, I wrote a story on Columbus DL Antwan Lowery. I told UM coaches yesterday its going to come down to them and the Gators for this big boy. Miami could definitely use him. He's a run-stopping defensive plug in the middle of the defense. And according to my friend Larry Blustein, he's better than the other kid Miami currently has -- Luther Robinson. http://www.miamiherald.com/604/story/564353.html
