The University of Arizona, fresh off their opening game victory over the University of Miami and feeling all confident, made the mistake of coming back to the Hurricanes' house for game two of the Super Regional on Saturday night. Well, you just don't come into the 305 and especially Mark Light Stadium and expect to get a way without a serious beating being dealt out to your team (literally) and sometimes their fans (figuratively).
The Hurricanes appeared to have reformed over the warm, open waters of nearby Biscayne Bay and came ashore once again, storming back from their opening game loss to pound and pound and pound the stubborn and scrappy Wildcats into submission 14-10. Forecasters had predicted an active and dangerous 2008 Hurricane season and the fans in South Florida were there to witness the damage.
Canes RB Javaris James scored from 5 yards out in the first quarter and QB Robert Marve connected with the Canes leading receiver in 2008 Aldarius Johnson for a 27 yard score on the second half to propel the Canes. The Wildcats could manage only a 33 yard FG in the first half before adding a late and meaningless TD with only 14 seconds to go in the game against the Canes third string defense. Coach Randy Shannon said after the game that...oops, that's looking ahead just a little too far for many Canes fans who may not be fans of the hardballers and yet are desperate for football season to start.
In reality, Jim Morris and his merry band of ball mashers belted out four (count 'em four) home runs in a brutal exhibition of long ball. The Canes battery officially broke out their slump and proceeded to pound to ball into the gap and over the stadium outfield fence. While Weeks and Raben (who set a NCAA record for walks in one game at six) were walking their way on base, Alonso, Grandal and Sobolewski were happy enough to rip the cover off the ball and what was left of it over the fence for some serious run producing at bats.
The Light was absolutely LIT UP not only by the efforts of the Canes players but by the festivities of the Canes fans on hand to witness a party like no other this year in Coral Gables. The fans who showed up to witness the destruction of the Wildcats were led by the Canespacers in the stands in chanting:
"Let's Go Cane", C-A-N-E-S...CANES", "It's Great, to be, a Miami Hurricane", Got Some Canes Over Here, Whoosh, Whoosh and the ever present RAG ARM by some guy wearing an orange Canespace T-shirt. We never found out who this fan was, except that his first name was "Greg" and he was seen sitting next to 86Cane on several occasions. Hmmmm...
The Canes face the same Wildcat team tonight at 7 PM on the duece (ESPN2) for a trip to the CWS in Omaha. We will be blogging the game LIVE so join us. This party is BYOB: Bring Your Own Blogging!
We need to crush FSU so we can shut their fans up... we need to crush everybody though. There should be no questions which team is the best.

Loco...there is a LOT of animosity left between FSU-UM players, coaches and fans.
Hope nothing happens that they regret...

Jeremy Shockey Breaks Silence
Jeremy Shockey broke his post-Super Bowl silence yesterday.
"Everybody said that I agreed to get traded and that I would welcome a trade or that I'm unhappy. . . . But you can't find one article that had my direct quote, except from an anonymous source or from this person or from that person, OK?" Shockey was saying yesterday at the POWERade Pro Challenge for children and heat-stricken media at Flushing Meadows Corona Park.
It doesn't mean Shockey and the Giants don't desperately need to sit down and clear the air.
His broken leg isn't 100 percent yet and his broken relationship with some member or members of the front office requires immediate healing.
To wit: why was he watching the Giants shock the Patriots from a skybox?
"And the truth is, I went to the Super Bowl game to go watch my team play; the Giants wouldn't let me sit on the sidelines with my teammates - I was forced to sit up in a box," Shockey said.
I said to Shockey: "And that ticked you off."
"Words can't explain," he said.
I asked him: "What is your relationship with the front office right now?"
"That's between the management and myself," Shockey said.
I asked him: "Do you want to and expect to play for the Giants this year?"
"Tough questions," he began. "I'm not the Giants front office, because they feel like they have to tell the world about things that happened . . . when it's a situation like this that's so severe, you don't leak it in the media. I'm not ever going to be a leak, its a team. But they feel like they're obligated to put their feelings in the media, which really hurt my family and myself, with the things I've done for them."
Shockey said he had texted yesterday morning with co-owner Steve Tisch.
"I consider him a father figure to me - and he would never betray me, like some other people that are there," Shockey said.
I asked him: "Would you welcome a trade?"
"I'm not saying that - no comment," Shockey said. "Whatever's happened between the Giants and myself is gonna stick between the Giants and myself."
I asked him: "Will you be at minicamp?"
"I plan on fulfilling my contractual obligation but the No. 1 thing that I'm going there for is to be with my teammates (who) I miss so much," he said.
When he arrived, wearing a black POWERade T-shirt and shorts, he had offered a statement: "I'm here for POWERade, fellas, and the statement I would like to make about the Giants and the speculation in the offseason is that whatever happens between the upper management, the lower management, the owners, any management, is gonna stay between my representation and them. Unlike the Giants, I'm gonna be quiet. They've released multiple things about myself and if you look back into the media, there's always a source. Well I'd like to know who the source is, and we'll go over here and we'll deal it out ourselves because I haven't said one negative thing towards the Giants."
At the event, he instructed youngsters how to catch a football. "Concentrate . . . it's all in your eyes!" He eagerly helped a young child off with the Jets jersey he was wearing: "Take your shirt off, take your shirt off!" He stopped and posed for pictures and signed a football for Jake Weingarten, my seven-year-old nephew.
Antonio Pierce reiterated yesterday that the Giants would be fools to trade Shockey. Yes they would. They need to make him wanted again. It was hell for him watching that magical run on crutches from afar. Their best chance to repeat is with a happy, healthy Shockey. They are a better team with him. Time for a group hug.

calvin,
I ranned him off with this statement. He got ahead of himself like the SHHHH guy from Zona who thought he will shut up the CANE fans at home.. They were a tough team no doubt but like Alonso said he want to win the championship regardless of the hard scheduling. Miami want to play the best and beat the BEST......IT'S OUR DESTINY TO WIN IT ALL JUST LIKE THE 99 SEASON.
here's what i wrote a few days ago....
As LEE CORSO would say NOT SO FAST MY FRIEND. DON'T COUNT ALL YOUR CHICKENS BEFORE THEY HATCH. ONLY ONE WIN DUDE! We'll be back to even things up and then snatch the prize away from ZONA!!!

By the way Ive follwed the baseball team all season. I am VERY PROUD of these guys. If they win the World Series they completely deserved it. They played some of the hardest teams out there. No cupcake games for them!!!

Congrats to the UM baseball team on making it to the CWS. I've never really followed baseball, but after going to the game @ ML on Saturday I'm now a fan. :)
I don't have an insidetheu account, but according to a different "S" - although this is not UM official LaRon Byrd is saying he has 47, Brandon Harris #1 & Vaughn Telemaque #7.
LOL 86, I guess it is good to be the king.

I'm sure you've added another member to the roster of the "86 86Cane" club. Oh wait, he DESERVED WHAT HE GOT by talking too much sh!t before actually winning anything. Can you blame the guy? His women's softball team goes down this year (so to speak) and he has to watch ASU celebrate their first national title, now he has to bow down to the almighty U. And they still have the defiecient Stoops brother as their head football coach. Yeah, Arizona is screwed. At least Lute has some gas left in the tank on the hardwood. Oops, spoke too soon. Well, there's always McCain to cheer on out in the desert when sports fail.

First off, a HUGE congratulations to the Canes on a great regional and for sacking up against a very good Arizona team! It was great to see the guys dealing with adversity and coming out on top. While Miami was battling Arizona, I was battling my girlfriend to watch the game but even she was holding her breath last night in the 8th and 9th innings and she even shrieked when Jax fired from deep short to Yonder for the big out. I won't be in Omaha, but I'll be glued starting next weekend.
Also - I thought you'd like the following quote from The Miami Hurricane, "President Shalala says she has seen the university change tremendously as the rankings indicate. It has moved from 66 to 52 since she has been president. "We don't admit thugs anymore. We do admit people that like to suntan, but those students are usually in the sun with a book in hand, and I think that's a difference people overlook," Shalala said. Right now UM is ranked at 52 and the University of Florida is ranked at 50, according to U.S. News & World Report. One of Shalala's goals is to not only get into the top 50, but to do so before the football game in fall, so "UM can beat UF twice." http://media.www.thehurricaneonline.com/media/storage/paper479/news/2008/04/28/News/Thoughts.On.The.University.Of.Miamis.Changing.Reputation-3353082.shtml
I may not agree with everything "The Donna" has done, but you've gotta love that kind of smack.
Go Canes!!!

I sat to the right of the press box (when facing the field) so I had a clear view of the Cansepace corner.... I just didn't have an opportunity to get over there. I had thoughts of going over to the Titanic before the game, but since I'd never been ML before I chose to go to in and find a seat instead. Thank goodness I did because it filled up quickly! I figured I would stop by after the game but the two teens I was with were exhausted.

Thanks KLCanefan and cubancane for the info!! Laron Byrd better be the truth if he is indeed wearing #47

"Canespace Corner"...gotta love the ring to that, huh? I wonder why the bloggers at ITU, The Miami Herald and the Sun Sentinel don't have a designated location at The Light?
I wonder if a single blogger from any of those sites was actually AT THE GAME? None of those sites has that posted? Hmmmm...
Posted by: SOUP | June 09, 2008 at 02:44 PM
SOUP,
It's been a while since I've been here (I usually only come here during football season). Are we at Canespace no longer friends with the folks at those sites (Herald, SS)? Oh well. Go Canes!
